Re:Misinformation
No, no you can't. Blu-Ray movies with ICT activated will ONLY display in full HD over HDMI. Anything else and it'll degrade it down to DVD quality[1], making the extra cost for the PS3 completely worthless. It's not worth cheaping out on $100 (which won't even buy you two PS3 games anyway) when all you'll accomplish is making your PS3 become worthless in a few years. See the Wikipedia article on Blu-ray and a HDTV Canada article on the ICT itself.
There's no reason to criple your PS3 by getting the cheap version that's guaranteed not to support all Blu-ray content.
[1] Actually ever-so-slightly-higher than DVD quality. But not full HD quality in any case.

A few months old now, but likely indicative of trends:

Re:the listening's the issue
Radio Shack
is gone in Canada... They changed to "The Source/La Source"... The only store in Montreal that still sells anything close to Ham stuff is Active...
So the idea of buying a scanner, while a good idea, is almost impossible here... I haven't seen any in my entire life (except in auctions or HAM conventions) -

Re:Multilateral disarmament my ass
IMHO, Firefox addins like Adblock have as much to do with taming of ads on the web. HOWEVER, I have come across sites that now forces you to disable Adblock to view their sites with the site operator claiming they need to show ads so their sites wouldn't go belly-up. The problem is most of the time the ads they display are those annoying Macromedia Flash based ads that sometimes are just buggy and suck up system resources. In any case, I just steer clear of those sites.
Here is one such site which forces you to disable Adblock when using Firefox or asks you to use Internet Explorer instead: www.digitalhomecanada.com

Re:Hypocrisy in action.
I vaguelly recall some edict made by the CRTC that they don't regulate the internet. http://www.media-awareness.ca/english/resources/a ...a nice, tidy, cut-and-dry violation of the Canadian telecommunications regulations act.r ticles/internet/crtc_report_regulation.cfm?RenderF orPrint=1They do regulate telecommunications companies and there was a recent kerfuffle over the fact that telcos offering VoIP were regulated while cable companies and pure internet companies are not. http://digitalhomecanada.com/index.php?option=com
_ content&task=view&id=531&Itemid=51Cira regulates the ".ca" DNS registration. http://www.cira.ca/ but I don't think they regulate any other part of the internet in Canada.
SFAIK there isn't any internet regulations in Canada. Various laws like copyright and libel still apply but there's nothing specific covering the internet. Please correct my ignorance if I am mistaken.

Re:I've been waiting for this to happen
PDA sales have increased substantially, with Blackberry well in the lead, but the MS OS predominates.

Re:Blu-Ray wins!
Well, crap.
I see VC-9 is also required in the BD-ROM format too.
Well played, Microsoft. I'm going to live in the woods. -

Re:Don't count on it
Firefox growth is declining Some people I know that switched to firefox switched back to IE mainly because firefox is somewhat unstable and a memory hog. I still use firefox because of tabbed browsing, and if IE gets tabbed browsing I'll probably switch back. Having my web browser use 200 megs of ram is just insane.

30 skip is "hidden" Re:Motorola 6xxx HDDVR is bestIt does have a 30 second skip...there is a remote control hack or two if you google around for it--although some people claim that comcast has disabled it on some boxes....it works on mine.

Motorola DCT6208 and DCT6400 can helpIn my area, the cable company is selling the Motorola DCT6208 at a loss ($500 Cdn = $400 US, even before rebates for first-time subscribers).
Presumably they are happy to take a loss because the buyers can't then jump to satellite easily...
Anyway, the 6208 (and presumably it's higher-end brother, the 6400 both allow direct recording to a firewire port, al though one reviewer said it just wouldn't work for PC, only Mac). of the post-decryption bitstream.

Re:I wish I could get this but...
Rogers cable is coming out with a Scientific Atlanta PVR by the end of the year.
You could also build a PVR yourself as mentioned in an earlier post.
