Re:Stirling Engines
I believe that knowledgepublications has book on stirling engines and I ordered a book that has plans and showed the construction of a 5HP stirling engine that used rice husk to burn and power it. they used the output with a belt to power a rice husking machine. Merrick Lockwood built a 5 Hp (3.7kW) Stirling Engine here is the book http://www.discoverthis.com/how-to-build-stirling.html here is one pumping water... as a test. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=URXaFGldGVo&feature=related http://www.knowledgepublications.com/books_by_title.htm

Capsela
>Capsela! http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Capsella http://www.discoverthis.com/capsela.html
I think this http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Capsela is what you meant, unless theres really something relevant about the Capsella plant. -

Re:OK, I've gotta ask
Here's the basic flow chart for the fuel cell process http://cfci.ccmr.cornell.edu/Fuelcell.html. Dr. DiSalvo also gave an interview a while ago explaining the fuel cell process for non-techies http://www.discoverthis.com/article-fuel-cells.html

Re:A TERRIBLE article
There actually was an article like this in Wired magazine last year: http://www.wired.com/wired/archive/14.06/chemistry.html that talks about some of the terrorism issues. Yeah, I think it's true that chemistry sets have become less dangerous, but there are also a lot of them available now for younger kids than were available years ago. Here's a kit designed for ages 4 and up http://www.discoverthis.com/first-chemistry-kit.html Couldn't find that 20 years ago.
-
Uhm... what about this chemistry set?
While I don't truly doubt most of the claims of the article, in the link to "embarrassing" sets available now, there is one example which does seem to include the things he complains are missing (e.g. alcohol burner, sulfur): http://www.discoverthis.com/chem-c3000.html
Of course, it's also the most expensive item there, and the others do look pretty smarmy and pathetic. Still, while it looks like there is a "war on science" here, it doesn't seem to be completely lost yet.

Yes, you're absolutely right! Alaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaah!

I'm so sick of china pumping out shit they swear up and down they invented.
Not like fuel cell toy cars haven't been around for a while.

Re:Internal Combustion
When I first saw the headline, I assumed somebody had used carbon-fibre paper for the conductive parts, ceramic-fibre paper for the parts exposed to moving hot gas, and some very low-boom combustion mixture - maybe really-lean methane/air, at zero-compression, to make something that could actually turn itself with internal combustion, however inefficiently. It could certainly be done, though that in itself is the only reason to do it. I was disappointed to see the body of the post.
How about a new post, headlined "Functional thermoplastic V8 engine, in production since the 1960s"? -
A model... a year... WHAT WAS THE POINT!
A model... a year... WHAT WAS THE POINT!
So you can mold paper fiber into shapes and let it dry and harden! ...its been done!

So you can mold some material into the shape of a V8 to see how it works! ...its been done!
http://www.discoverthis.com/visible-v8.html
So you want to waste a year of your life! ...its been done!

and me reading this! http://slashdot.org/
I would have been more impressed if they mashed tomatoes and cast them into fluid-functioning V8!
OH WAIT... that's been done!

Capsella
I remember this fun toy... a geek's dream
http://www.discoverthis.com/capsela.html
They were a lot of fun, came with motors, gears, wheels, fan blades, all sorts of cool stuff. They weren't cheap though, but I sure enjoyed them. Looking at this site, either the price has come down, or I was really poor as a child.
I'd say I had this in the mid to late 80's. -
Snap Circuits are great fun
I recently sent a Snap Circuits set to a friend's child for his 11th birthday. He's been having great fun with it. I liked it so much i got the Pro set for myself for Xmas. My 3.5 year old daughter has been surprisingly interested in how it works. She loves to make the lights flash and the fan spin, and she's very curious about how it all works.
Snap Circuits are the equivalent of those old 100-in-1 electronics sets with the springs and wire, but with a much nicer design.
Not exactly software, but still a great way to introduce kids to computing concepts. Projects include basic gates, LED's, timer circuits, and other fun stuff. -
capsula?
When I was little I had a capsula ( http://www.discoverthis.com/capsula.html ) set that could walk on water... didn't anyone else?
Oh -- it looks like they're still being made... I guess it's time to find out my Visa's credit limit. -
Shrimp Farm? Big Deal
I had a "Shrimp Farm" almost three decades ago. But it had a much cooler name, This was truly a great gift.

Re:Science kit
Well, this one is $139, but sounds like the sort of thing you're talking about...
