Re:Diversity
Don't worry, you can always go look at the nominees for the Dragon Awards and find some actual decent Science Fiction. The "Hugh" awards are basically dead, more an indicator of what not to read now, at least if you're an SF fan, rather than a literary SJW.

Re: Holy Shit! this is opposite world!
I'm a Sad Puppy too, and have been since it all started. What's amusing, is that, last year, Vox Day and his alt-right people decided to leverage the "Sad Puppies" with their own "Rabid Puppies" slate. And, of course, both have been conflated, despite the fact that they come from VERY different places.
Besides, the Hugo Awards, and Worldcon, have been dying for years. The announcement of the Dragon Award by DragonCon in Atlanta is just another nail in the coffin. When the "WorldCon" got 5,171 attendees last year, while DragonCon got over 70K attendees. . . the argument than the WorldCon is representative of Fandom tends to fail. . . similar attendance is seen consistently at the San Diego Comic Con, the Salt Lake City Comic Con, and the New York ComicCon.
That would suggest that perhaps the Hugos and the WorldCon are NOT representative of SF and Fantasy fandom. . .

DragonCon is on the East Coast
While not as large as ComicCon, it is one of the largest multi-genre conventions in the US. Last years attendance was 40,000+ and it keeps growing.
Plus, unlike a lot of conventions, DragonCon counts their multi-day passes as ONE person and not 2 or 3 or more (for example, if I buy a 4 day pass for DragonCon that counts as 1 person at the convention but some conventions would count that as 4 people and thus inflate their overall numbers).
There are many other conventions on the East Coast that do very well. Why don't you check out DragonCon though? If you live on the East Coast come on down to Atlanta for 4 days of fun, freaks, fans, and foolishness (did I mention hot young women in little or nothing?)!!

Re:Who is this marathon for?Well, I for one _would_ watch the entire marathon except for one thing - it is on a FRIGGIN' MONDAY! You know, when the majority of people have to work. WTF is up with that asinine programming choice? How about making it a marathon on Sunday when the majority of people are off? Now I either have to use up a vacation day as I'm out of sick days and comp time, or get "sick" over the weekend and miss a day of work. This is piss poor scheduling on Sci-Fi's part - and they know it.
I met both Alan Tudyk and Summer Glau (yummy!) in person at DragonCon this past weekend and they were down to earth, glad to talk to the fans people. They mentioned a possible movie #2 but would not say "Yes, there will be" (of course) and Alan specifically stated that if there was one, everyone would be in it. Possible prequel movies is what he said. Now, that being said, even if I liked the show and the cast and wanted to support them by watching the marathon is it worth risking my job or using up what little vacation time we Americans get? The risk job? No. Using vacation? Maybe.
Oh, the poster above missed a third option: Those who haven't seen the show (due to time and/or money contraints) but really want to.

Nice of them to dovetail with DragonCon
Nice of them to schedule it after DragonCon, another geek-fest, Sept 1-4, 2006. http://www.dragoncon.org/

Re:Disappointing
I don't usually air personal material on the 'net (well, not much) but I met Harlan Ellison at DragonCon two years ago and he IS a big fucking prick. One of my best friends not only had lunch with that cocksucker but used her own personal car to drive Harlan and his friends to lunch (at Harlan's own request) and THEN, later that day, he treated her like total shit when all she asked for was a picture of Harlan and his wife. Man, I'll be honest, if I had had a bat or other weapon of personal destruction I'd be in jail because I would have beat the shit out of that asshat. He treated my friend with THAT much disrespect, disdain, and total disregard for her as a human being. Harlan's wife on the other hand was super nice. She deserves an award for putting up with that little peckerwood all these years.

Aging fanbase?I've seen both Trekkies and Trekkies 2 (thanks Dragon Con) and I've been to science fiction and genre conventions in the 70's and 80's and most recently the last 4 years at Dragon Con in Atlanta.
It seems to me that the Star Trek fanbase is aging, and there aren't really a lot of new fans getting into it. I first became a serious Star Trek fan years after the show was cancelled, and continued to varying degrees throughout the years. Back in the 70's it seemed like there were some science fiction conventions (and conferences) and lots of Star Trek conventions.
But with the popularity of so many other genre shows out there now, including Buffy/Angel, Farscape, Babylon 5, Stargate and others it seems that a lot of people who in the past would have gravitated towards Trek and many other shows to get fanatical about.
The success of Star Trek in its many forms has helped to lay the groundwork for a lot of the fandom centered around other shows, but the Star Trek franchise itself might be suffering a bit because of this.
My specific question is, during the filming of Trekkies 1 and 2, did you notice large numbers of younger fans, and did there seem to be around the same number when you filmed the sequel - or did you notice any decline in the numbers of younger fans?

Goths and Geeks.Actuallly a lot of Goths ARE geeks.
Geeks come in many stripes. Check out Dragon*Con in Atlanta and their new Gothic Journeys programming track for confirmation.
At D*C 2004 acoustic Goth musician, artist, writer and filmmaker Voltaire mistakenly claimed that Goth was NOT really a 'geek thing'. The other members of the panel, and most of the audience immediately disagreed and Voltaire (who has an EP of Star Trek parody songs, btw) immediately conceded the point.

Re:It just won't be the same if not...And while they're at it they better get the same people for C3P0....
Yeah, I would say they need to considering Anothony Daniels is THE reason C3PO is as fucking funny as he is. I have met Anthony in real life (at DragonCon in 1998 and 2000 or 2001) and he is just as funny in person as he is while performing. So, yeah, the original actors would be best to have back. Don't you agree?

I love Sega and all, but seriously..
The time for this lawsuit was over a year ago. You know, before the game went Greatest Hits on PS2 and Platinum Hits on Xbox. Before the sequel came out!
It reminds me of Sega being sued by a lady who claims that Sega used her likeness (instead of Apollo Smile, who did the voice work on the NA releases) in Space Channel 5. There's no reason for this frivolous lawsuit. -
Re:DC in September (SPX 2003)As someone new to comic books in general, I wholeheartedly second the recommendation of coming to the Small Press Expo. Besides the absurdly large San Diego Comic Con (which just came and went), this is probably one of the best conventions as it's quite cozy and gives you lots of chances to talk with creators as well as find books that you aren't likely to find at your comicbook shop.
If you're able to come at the end of August and you want to hit a large gaming convention, DragonCon might be for you. Though i've never been to it, I've been told that it's one of the largest gaming conventions on the US East Coast. -
what would be cool ...
is to let you transfer from one camera to another. For example last week I was at Dragon*Con and there were plenty of times when I would miss a photo op where it would have been kick-ass to have been able to just go up to someone and say "hey, I see you got a pic of that crazy costume, mind if i get a copy?" and voila! I'd have it.

Then I guess you never saw "Very Bad Things"
VBT has the dubious distinction of being the only film that I have walked out on. Started as a potentially delicious black comedy with the death of the hooker and the frantic insanity of what to do with the body, but the cold-blooded murder of the security officer just made the film plain sick and evil.
There was one other film whose title I (thankfully) refuse to remember, but it was so bad and left such a horrid taste in my mouth and brain that I taped over the tape in 2, then 4, then 6 hour mode before throwing it away. I felt its evil was counter-balanced by the taping: I only used programs like Oprah and Jerry Springer.
And which Travolta movie are you talking about, Battlefield Earth?
I have a story for you about that movie. This year I was fortunate to attend DragonCon in Atlanta (very major SF con). There was a table for BFE, in fact, it was 2 or 3 booths wide. It was avoided like the plague. You could actually watch people moving to the other side of the aisle to avoid contamination from it.
Same thing happened at San Diego ComicCon: smaller booth, no one going near it.

Re:the first thing that comes to mind
If you're in Tenessee, you might be able to get to DragonCon for Robot Battles. This year's was the best we've had so far. Although I was a little disappointed that our robot, Stingray, didn't fare better.
