Handheld Gaming Device Runs linux
-
Re:This reply would be longer...
There is plenty of stuff coming out of the DS homebrew community too - and of course DS users may also be eyeing up a certain OS port from afar...
I agree that both systems really do need more games - but the DS does already have some fun titles: Electroplankton, Zookeeper, Warioware.
Admittedly they aren't quite up to the grandeur of Rockstar's opus, but not all games need to be in that vein, especially on a handheld device.

Seems to have quite the audience.Judging by the posts at dslinux.org, more people over the age of 18 need to get a NintendoDS and start hacking..
My answer: Yes, the DS becomes an unstoppable workhorse once Linux is running on it. It has the ability to run ~60 applications at one time with limitless RAM. Your GBA Flash cart becomes a 300 Terrabyte Hard drive and the internal WiFi is boosted by 60,000% giving you the ability to browse the web at all times, anywhere in the world. Once implemented, it will be able to read your mind.

That's incredible... ohmy.gif

They have made *major* progess in the last 6-8 months. I remember looking when it was just a sketch of a webpage with no logo, and the declaration of the intent to port. Go, guys, go. -
Re:DS resolution vs. Warcraft 1 resolutionHeh, that "Samurai: Total Warrior" thing sounds appropriate, since it's a smaller scale than "Total War." And that's my point: I just don't see how a full-sized RTS could fit comfortably on this device.
The fact that AOE2 will be turn-based makes it more similar to DopeWars (as per my example a few posts ago) than to Warcraft, which I admit will work well on the DS. But it's also not a RTS anymore.
Incidentally, I did some googling, and I found this:Age of Empire II port and Advance Wars are turn based, not real-time...
This confirms what you said about AOE2, and what I suspected about Samurai. It seems to me that the game makers have realized the same thing I have; otherwise, why wouldn't they leave the things as RTSs instead of turning them into something else?
And Namco's Shogun Warrior will be a pure action RTS; no resources...
Don't get me wrong, I agree that the stylus would work well for RTS, but you need the stylus and a screen big enough to show a decent chunk of the map to have a good game.
As for GoldenEye, well, I hated trying to play that with the N64 controller too. For FPSs I like using a mouse -- not a joystick, not a thumb joystick, not a trackball, and probably also not a stylus! -

Re:Gameboy emulator widens appeal
That's funny...I'm gonna buy a DS to play Gameboy Advance games
;P
Plus it'll make a neat little pocket PC once the DS Linux project goes a little further. Too bad the touch screen's not pressure sensitive for Gimp use... -
Re:Mobile Gaming
Linux anybody?
A working build of DSlinux is now available from www.dslinux.org. -
Read the thread
The comments thread on the page in interesting. Can the PSP read a mini CD? I don't advocate stealing games, but the prospect of running linux on the harware is cool. They are booting Linux on the Nintendo DS.

Before anyone asks
Yes, it does run Linux http://dslinux.org/

Nintendo is fading
I love RPGs. Super Nintendo was, and still is (in my opinion), the best console for RPGs. Final Fantasy 4-6, Secret of Mana 1 and 2, Tales of Phantasia, Star Ocean, Chrono Trigger, Secret of Evermore, Earthbound, and Super Mario RPG, among others, were some of the best video games I'd ever played.
When the N64 came out, I naturally expected the same quality and hurriedly bought it. And guess what? There is not, to my knowledge, a single traditional RPG for it. Quest 64? A joke. Paper Mario came close, but no cigar. Zelda? Good game, but still not an RPG in the traditional sense.
The Gamecube was a little better, but still not quite hitting it. Tales of Symphonia, Skies of Arcadia, and Phantasy Star Online were all pretty good; but Arcadia and PSO were just Dreamcast ports, and Symphonia is being ported to the PS2 with added features.
But my complaint isn't limited just to RPGs. My gaming has shifted heavily to the PC, because, owning only Nintendo console (foolishly), there's just not enough quality gaming coming out consistently. At best, it's a decently fun game every few months.
Oh, and let's not forget the DS now. Every game that has come out so far is--let's face it--pretty bland. The two most entertaining games are Mario 64 DS and Zoo Keeper, but both are ports of existing games (Mario 64 and Bejeweled, respectively). They've all just used the touch screen as a mere gimmick, too; where's the innovation?
Whereas the PSP not only has several great games (Lumines, anyone?), but also vast homebrew capability. Skimming Slashdot every day, I've seen probably half a dozen or so articles about neat homebrew PSP projects; the only one for the DS is DSLinux, which is barely even out of its infancy.
Will I choose the Revolution over the other next-gen consoles when it comes out? Maybe. Will it disappoint? I wouldn't doubt it. How I choose my next console doesn't alter my point, though: after the SNES, Nintendo has failed to impress me time and time again. -
Re:Force?
If they ever get Linux running well on the DS I might be interested, it'd be really cool as a pocket pc/gameboy.
;) -
Good for the PSP, but it's not the only one. It's great any time a device pulls a following like this and shows some unintended utility, but the PSP is hardly alone.
The DS also has a growing development community, and most likely, it'll be the more fruitful, at least in the short term. For one, we can already run our own code on the DS - and who knows when that'll be possible on the PSP?
I hope cool things do turn up on the PSP, but if you're interested in DS hacking, check out these:

Not when...
Not when the DS runs Linux.
Well, it might someday. -
The coup-de-grace
Does Cowboyneal hate these guys or what?
I clicked the DS Linux link, and the first thing I read is:
Server Problems (Started at March 8 2005, 05:56 PM)
We are currently experiencing server difficulties, please remain calm as they are being resolved.
I'm guessing a sick server won't handle slashdotting very well... -
Re:Linux
*snicker* There's always some group of idiots out there with a bunch of pie-in-the-sky ideas an no technical ability who decide to jump on a domain like that. See the equivalent DS site for an example (and before you ask, all that stuff on their front page... that would be them reporting *other* people's work... though, to their credit, they've refrained from claiming it's theirs). Thus, seeing is believing, and I have yet to see one of these "groups" actually achieve something...
