Re:Duke Nukem Fore.. eh..
I'm not affiliated with the project, but someone was motivated enough to take that classic memory and update it (somewhat) for the modern world.
No, you won't mistake it for a recent game release, but it is a great way to experience the classic again without as much of the dated graphics.
Highly recommend Duke Nukem 3D HRP (High-Resolution Pack)!

Re:no substitute for the real thing
http://eduke32.com/ + http://hrp.duke4.net/ = DN3D on any current system. Its ridiculous amounts of fun with VERY pretty visuals.

Re:Oh hell yeah
Like others here I can verify it works well in DOSBox. For multiplayer in windows xDuke + YANG seems to have online players whenever I check. For the single player experience I recommend eduke32 (which can be further extended with the High Resolution Pack and Polymer 3d engine)
YANG - http://yang-online.com/

Re:Controls
Duke3D has an updated media pack and engine that is mostly modern. Full, proper controls at least, as well as much better graphics.

Dukeworld - Realistic Disneyland TC for Duke3d!
They should "hire" the individual or persons behind the Duke Nukem 3d Total Conversion called, "DukeWorld". It was one of the best Total Conversions, mapping out with sound and vision parts of Disneyland. You could ride some of the rides (Star Tours, Pirates ride, Haunted Mansion with stretching room, more!) complete with the sounds from the theme park. If you have Duke3d, try DukeWorld TC, you may download it here:
http://dukeworld.duke4.net/classic%20dukeworld/tc/disney/
and read the ReadMe File before you download it. I would love to see this TC remade, it's worth buying Duke3D just to play this TC. Yes, it even has People Mover!
Someone please post this to the Gearbox site forums so they can have a look at it. -

In the meantime
You can enjoy an updated DN3D with the help of EDuke32 and the High Resolution Pack. Be sure to grab the HRP preview for the new Polymer renderer if you want all of the latest visual goodies.

Re: Serious Sam
Speaking of which, Serious Sam HD (the updated version of Serious Sam 1) is on massive sale this weekend only until Monday on Steam! Down to $6.79 from $20! Man, Steam game sales are awesome. I now have more games than I can possibly play because of the recent Steam Holiday Sale which had games at prices where you shouldn't even bother with pirating
:P
That being said, the Duke Nukem 3D Atomic Edition can be gotten from Good Old Games for only $5.99. The nice thing about GOG is that you can download any of the games you purchase from them again anytime (just log in to your account), and these classic games have absolutely no DRM (unlike Steam where Steam has to be running for your games to run).
Also, if you're going to give old Duke3D a spin, don't forget to grab the fan-made Duke Nukem High Resolution Pack which will give you high resolution textures, actual 3D models and a windows-native 3D hardware acceleration!
Cheers! -
Re:Duke Nukem 3D: High Resolution Pack
Adding 3-D Models to a classic game does not make it better.
http://hrp.duke4.net/screens/hrp_screen04.jpg
That 3-D lizard looks like Hi-Res crap IMO, and don't get me started on the Pigs.
I'm not sure how you can even argue that the movements would be similar. Going from 2-D animations, frame by frame, to 3-D models that must move around?
This is a Duke Knock-off, quit calling it what it aint. -
Duke Nukem 3D: High Resolution Pack
Well, meanwhile, you can relive Duke Nukem 3D in hi-res 3D glory with the Duke Nukem 3D: High Resolution Pack. All the sprites have been replaced with 3D models and the textures replaced with hi-res textures - you get to play it in a modern Windows environment with hardware OpenGL acceleration too.
Enjoy! :) -
Re:Windows 7 makes me excited
I suppose it depends how you count. They released a 4.0 that wasn't ready. They knew precisely what message they were sending, and are to this day trying to talk their way out of it.
They have, at the 4.0 launch, declared it was a developper release. The base was stable, however the rest wasn't. They did this because devs could then start porting apps. They also wanted to release (too, arguably) soon, but that was in order to not let the development go Enlightenment style.
Are you in denial? They fired the DNF team.
No: http://www.duke4.net/news.php
Why the hell didn't they delay the release?
Why the hell didn't Microsoft delay Windows 95 when it wasn't finnished? Because sometimes, you have to. Better always ship then don't. However it is not a LTS release, so it's bleeding edgy stuff.

The Refused
A post on Duke4 suggests they pitched it to both id and Valve
Obviously they both refused

some quotes
From Cubeblue:
"That scene with the big alien in the football field? That's the first level, it's Duke playing an arcade version of Duke 3D inside his huge Duke mansion. [...] So you start the game playing with this moderate level of tech and play for a few minutes and it's cool, then you zoom out of the arcade screen entirely and you're Duke and everything looks a little shinier and nicer, now you're in the actual game world and it's even more impressive. It's a really cool effect."From Mark Skelton:
"I took the job because if any company on the planet needed help finishing a game, 3d realms did, and we ALMOST pulled it off. In 2 years of being there, we were able to take this convoluted mess and make it into a badass game."Source: http://www.duke4.net/news.php (this too)

Re:12 Years
http://hrp.duke4.net/
Have fun. If you have your original or Atomic Edition disc, or can find a copy, I can guarantee you that it works perfectly fine running natively under XP (Duke3D plays decently on a X300 mobile at 1400x1050, it plays good at 1024x768). -
Re:It's not even funny anymore
Ummm.... they have. It's Duke Nukem 3D for modern computers. Just an upgraded engine, not a new game.
-
Re:On Purpose?
So use new hardware to play the classic game. It's still more fun than a lot of FPS's.
-
Re:On Purpose?
Why use DOS? You can play the game at modern resolutions. It's fun

5 years, 3 months, 5 days... Yet still...
...manage to beat Duke Nukem Forever.
According to this page, DNF has been in (in)active development for over 8 years...
