I had initial troubles with the .au uLaw version, but got it to go with a little work in an old version of goldwave.

Thus I've converted Bowie's .au file to 8KHz 32bit MP3. The full 1.2 MB file (4+ minutes) as well as a quarter meg 60 second snippet are available here.

Hmmm, shouldn't have called the page filename 'Moog' I guess. Oh, 15KB/s maximum bandwidth, from my home ADSL box. Be gentle :)

There are, in fact, at least -3- Mac clones of Napster.

My personal favorite (at the moment) is Rapster, since it gives you the choice of connecting directly to any of the known Napster servers, as well, as the OpenNap servers. Btw, the MacStar page doesn't appear to be working at the moment.

Running services from a dynamic IP works fine. I have Pacific Bell DSL and I got it just after they stopped doing single static IPs, so I got stuck with a dynamic.

I use qmail for mail and apache with mod_ssl for web service. (Yes, that's really my domain name.) I have several NameVirtualHosts defined for apache (my home page is the same machine), so I have to restart apache whenever I get a new IP. No big deal. I have my domain name pointing to a friends nameserver. The nameserver is updated whenever I get a new IP using Bind 8's dynamic updating features and public key authentication. I havn't had any problems so far.

If you don't have a friend that runs a nameserver, I also have it update my dyndns.org entry and that doesn't seem to have any problems either. All in all, I'm happy with it, and with Bind 8's dynamic updating, having a static IP isn't so crucial any more.

As one of the geniuses behind reverse engineering the protocol, I'd like to commend the Nullsoft folks. A Delphi drop-in component is in the works so every app can get on the gnutellnet. Ther are clone clients in the works for Linux CLI, perl, tcl, Java, C++ classes, and more I'm sure I'm forgetting. The script kiddies start to flood the network around 5 pm (+500) but network traffic shaping of the next version should help that. Ah yes, thank you. I knew that the Dynamic DNS services did not provide DNS hosting or aliasing (i.e. can't use your own domain name), but I hadn't thought about using a combination of the two.

For slashdot readers wondering how, here's the way to do it:

Sign up for Granite Canyon DNS hosting service (if you haven't already).
Sign up for a DynDNS.org hostname, yourhost.dyndns.org.
Set up an alias (via a CNAME record) that maps your domain name to your DynDNS hostname.

You don't do that. What you do is use a dynamic hosting service like DynDns.org and then refer your granite canyon domain to that address. I haven't got this working yet, nor have I tried, but it is my plan.

Section 48 of this request states that we supposedly "have received notice through the MPA and refused to remove the information at issue". This is absolutely false! We have never received any such request (from the MPA or anybody else for that matter) and we obviously were not given the opportunity to refuse! Either Jared Bobrow needs to go back to law school or the DVD CCA needs to get a new firm. This is the kind of sloppy work that could get an important document thrown out.

Explanation on legality of this information

The software (source as well as binaries) offered on this site can be freely redistributed because it was published under the GNU General Public License. The purpose of this software is not illegal copying of DVD disks. It is meant to provide information necessary to be able to program a DVD player for Linux. To do this, the CSS system needs to be incorporated in the player. Recently the (very weak) DVD content scrambling system was deciphered, freeing the way for a Linux DVD player. The CSS system is not a copy protection system, since it does not prevent copying of the disk. Writing information about the way an encryption scheme functions is completely legal. The source code and binaries on this site are completely legal too, since they contain no code from the DVD consortium or its members. The sources and programs on this site were written by third parties using clean-room reverse engineering methods which are (ready?) completly legal.

With that said, there is a possibility that I may have to remove this site in the near future because like everyone else, I can't afford to go to court to fight it. Luckly, it seems fairly unlikely that any law firm will ever be able to get rid of all these mirrors at this point (there are currently 41 in 8 different countries and this list is growing every day). However, I have only seen very few mirror _lists_ like this one anyplace. If anyone has the resources, it might be wise to mirror this list of mirrors as well so that the right people will still know that these mirrors exist.

All these issues are why my friends and I have "procured" some server space from our school and gotten our own subdomains from dyndns.org. If there is ever a problem with the server, we fix it ourselves. The only problem is that one has trouble convincing their school to spring for a decent machine; case in point, right now the server is down (damn cable connection/AMD K6-2/lack of RAM) and it's the weekend so we can't fix it...so I guess I just accidentally convinced everybody to get a proffesional hosting service when that was not my intention at all. Oh well, I guess you live and learn. Now to put up that Tribes server (duct-taped to the bottom of the table of course).

The Mining Co. (apparently now called "About.com") is the wave of the future, IMO--using intelligent people to try and distill down the data.

I find it telling how recently this post and the one on saving /. from Natalie Portman/Trolls have come up together--both are the result of Too Much Information needing to be distilled down. /. turned to moderators. About.com is all about that, too.

I first learned the term "reintermediation" from an article by Nicholas Negroponte in WIRED magazine. In another article by him (which I can't find right now) he says that while some people believe that librarians will be out of jobs, he predicts that there will be a new form of librarian. The old librarian could help you find what book you were looking for in the library. The new librarian will help you find the content you need from the 'net.

As a personal aside, I'm shocked and dismayed that search engines don't index database queries--I *just* finished rolling out my new personal web site which is totally database-driven, and thorhoughly meant to be indexed. Now you're telling me that because all my URLs look like this "content.asp?nodeid=dejavu" that search engines won't find all the delicious content I'm creating? Botheration!

I suppose *a* workaround here is to create an application which traverses the site and builds some mirrored heirarchy of it in static pages for the search engine to index, which uses JavaScript to bounce the user to the *right* page once they get there.

The software (source as well as binaries) offered on this site can be freely redistributed because it was published under the GNU General Public License. The purpose of this software is not illegal copying of DVD disks. It is meant to provide information necessary to be able to program a DVD player for Linux. To do this, the CSS system needs to be incorporated in the player. Recently the (very weak) DVD content scrambling system was deciphered, freeing the way for a Linux DVD player. The CSS system is not a copy protection system, since it does not prevent copying of the disk. Writing information about the way an encryption scheme functions is completely legal. The source code and binaries on this site are completely legal too, since they contain no code from the DVD consortium or its members. The sources and programs on this site were written by third parties using clean-room reverse engineering methods which are (ready?) completly legal.

With that said, there is a possibility that I may have to remove this site in the near future because like everyone else, I can't afford to go to court to fight it. Luckly, it seems fairly unlikely that any law firm will ever be able to get rid of all these mirrors at this point (there are currently 41 in 8 different countries and this list is growing every day). However, I have only seen very few mirror _lists_ like this one anyplace.
