Two words
Missed Opportunity.
For both BlackBerry and their "professional grade" but too-small PlayBook tablet, and for E-Ink and their lack of color devices on the market. To be fair, there is the jetBook Color which is targeted at the educational market... but it's the only one and I doubt anyone has made any additional aviation apps for it. Too bad they couldn't have leveraged their branding for the aviation market.

Re:One Way Tool? And what's really stupid is that there are commercial devices available which are bidirectional for under US$600. Sounds like great US military spending.
An even cheaper "bi-directional" alternative is to use the Hercules C-130s the US military already has and get the heck outta there already. -
Re:One Way Tool?
The model you mention looks a bit too flimsy, but they also do this one which really does look a lot more something that you could easily carry around and use on the move.

Actual translators already exist
That sounds like just a point-and-click set of canned questions and multiple choice responses. There are better things.
Speech-to-speech translators and universal dictionaries are getting pretty good these days. These guys make one. -
Re:Excellent book!bits of info (no pun intended)
Well the pun would be Tukey's, I suppose.
(I take it you didn't mean this problem of the French with bits and bytes...)

already available in handheld unitsA St. Petersburg, Russia company called Ectaco has been selling bidirectional handheld speech recognition-based translation systems called Universal Translators.
They have them in English-Russian and English-German at present, but apparently plan to add more languages all the time. Their unidirectional models ("UT-103") handle about eight languages currently.

Why do the Russians have the best communications?
The real masters of man-powered accessories were definitely the red flag guys.
As an A.C. posted, the Russians have the Universal Translator

low-power handhelds for literacyThis reminds me of the project to make a solar powered reading education handheld.
The former Soviets are very advanced in this kind of thing; check out the "universal translator" speech-to-speech translation handheld.

also, the game needs a universal translator
Another patch that's needed is to have internet-wide messaging capabilities with the Bablefish or Google-API translations, which would naturally be represented in the game with a handheld universal translator
-
*uniTransl(char *languages[])Ectaco makes similar products, but as they are based in St. Petersburg, Russia, I don't think they have Unicode pages for the East Pacific Rim ready.
Best wishes,

okay, here's how to give a UT to HoshiHow to give Hoshi a Universal Translator:
Step one: purchase a UT-203 from Ectaco
Step two: find out which SF convention(s) Linda Park is booked at.
Step three: get a friend with a video camera.
Step four: hope you're the first in the autograph line to pull this stunt, but try to be gracious if she already has more than she can use.
Step five: Suggest ThinkGeek carry these things, if she likes it.
Best wishes,
James -
already been done for Russian <=> English
A St. Petersberg company called Ectaco has already done this for bidirectional English-Russian handheld speech-to-speech translation. They call their stuff "Universal Translators" too.

CERN? Nope - Bolt, Beranek and NewmanThe WWW is simply an application of TCP/IP.
Lessig makes some good points. Since there is now commercial handheld speech-to-speech translation, the whole idea of derivative works is going to have to be re-thought.
Judge Patel is paying for so quickly siding with corporate hoarder-whores.

Integration with a Speech-to-Speech Translator?Could this technology be integrated well with bidirectional speech-to-speech translation devices?
If so, I suppose it would have to still have a visual feedback component to remove ambiguities, just like the Ectaco product.

Re:Integrating protheses in the neural loop
Agreed; we might someday even be able to plug in to a Universal Translator

Re:take away the mouseFrankly, I won't be satisfied until they wire the monkey's brain to the Universal Translator
From the Universal Translator site:New topic added - Housekeeper.
The phrases are selected with special purpose of covering about 95% of the communication needs of the property owners or tenants dealing with foreign speaking housekeepers.
Now, UT-103 recognizes, translates into Spanish, Russian or French, and pronounces over 200 phrases on the subject.
Tell me that is a joke page. It is, right? I mean...can this be for real? -

take away the mouseStep 1: Condition monkey to point mouse cursor at picture of food, to receive food reward.
Step 2: Record neural signature before and during actions of Step 1.
Step 3: Remove mouse from monkey.
Step 4: Show picture of food along with picture of mouse cursor, at a random relative angle.
Step 5: Reward monkey if and only if detecting neural signature of monkey making correct mouse vector movement.
Step 6: Repeat steps 4 and 5.
Step 7: Publish statistics.
Frankly, I won't be satisfied until they wire the monkey's brain to the Universal Translator
