Re:Going back to the Build Engine days ...
You can still buy it from the 3DRealms Web site, apparently. Only ten bucks. But you'll have to set up a DOS system (or maybe Linux under DOSEMU, I don't know.) Alternatively, you could try one of the better Windows ports available. Both his Duke Nukem and Shadow Warrior ports play just like the original, only with substantially better graphics. You will, however, have to have the original games around for it to extract the graphics data, since he can't legally make the copyrighted WAD files available for download.

Re:this is good!
This is a bit off-topic, but if you're into Duke Nukem 3D as I am, you might want to check out Jonof's JFDuke3D port. It's a remarkable Windows port of Duke
... you need access to the original game data but if you have that it works great, adds a lot of visual enhancements using modern video cards. Even supports multiplayer, and the game plays just like the original.

Re:Good to hear this
Speaking of DOS games, would you happen to know if Build Engine games such as Duke Nukem 3D, Shadow Warrior, Blood and so forth work under FreeDOS?
Duke 3D and SW are available in native Linux versions using OpenGL and 32-bit textures. See http://jonof.edgenetwork.org/ for details. -
Re:About time then
I kind of like the charm of the old low-res video (and play it that way quite often!), but JonoF's port is the absolute best. OpenGL + hi-res textures = "whoa". I believe it builds under Linux, but have never tried it; the Windows binaries work perfectly.

Re:Duke 3D and 2D artwork
Duke3d has been prettied up with OpenGL by JonoF at http://jonof.edgenetwork.org/index.php?p=jfduke3d

Try the Build engine ...
there's a great Windows port of Duke Nukem available, and it includes all the tools you need to create your own levels. It would be a great start. You can get it here

The Build Engine - the engine behind Duke Nukem 3D
One suggestion: Why not wander over to Jonathan Fowler's games web site http://jonof.edgenetwork.org/ and take a look?
The engine behind Duke Nukem 3D (and Shadow Warrior) was written by Ken Silverman, and was called the "Build Engine." Ken released the source code for the engine in 2000, then 3D Realms released the code for Duke in 2003 and for Shadow Warrior in 2005.
Jonathan Fowler (JonoF) has ported all of these from Win95/Win98 to WinXP, with Ken Silverman's help.
At the very least, give the games a try - JonoF and Ken did some very fine work, and it's a lot of fun to play with Duke and Lo Wang once more.
And, you never know - the work they already did may be useful to you as a springboard for the project you have in mind.
As the person above said - do plan to put some time into this.
Good luck, and enjoy! -
Re:Relevant?
Well, just for old time's sake try this, if you still have your original game disc handy to get the
.GRP file from. Phenomenal Duke 3D port (he's working on Shadow Warrior now) and the network support is now UDP-based, rather than IPX like the original, and works great over broadband. It's remarkable playing Duke Nukem 3D at 1600x1200 resolution with shading and a lot of other modern OpenGL effects, not to mention several other players. Runs flawlessly in Win2K and XP ... haven't tried it under Wine yet. I guess the developer is a good friend of Ken Silverman, author of the original Build engine. Whoever he is, he's one sharp cookie. -
Re:Expectations aren't that high
Maybe this is exactly 3DRealms' strategy to solve this embarassing delay: they only bring it out after everyone who remembered the original has died.
Don't forget, you can always relive the glory.
Groovy.

JonoF's Duke Nukem 3D Port (JFDuke3D)
This is the home of my port of 3D Realms Entertainment's Duke Nukem 3D to Windows using my port of Ken Silverman's Build game engine. It is work in progress so that means it might crash and burn and be unstable.

The Best Ever game ending is missing
Duke Nukem 3D
http://www.mobygames.com/game/dos/duke-nukem-3d/sc reenshots/gameShotId,5640/
Sadly the best bit isn't there, where Duke rips off the head of the Overlord and shits down his neck !!
Ending to end all endings.
Time ticks away until I can play it again :

Why Bother
Why wait for the new game when you can play the classic duke3d on Linux, Windows or Mac. Since the source code was released, many moons ago, there have been updates that use your 3d accelerator, your gigs of RAM and your Internet connection for multi-player matches. There is also a slew of third-party maps and levels available. All free, of course.

Re:What about duke nukem
Check this out. It's an OpenGL Build engine port for DN3D (works with Duke it out in DC, Caribbean, Nuclear winter, etc). Seems to support resolutions up to 1280x1024. There's also a high-res texture pack (abot 60 megs) availible as a torrent dl.
