Re:why does your phone need software running on yo
No guarantees (may not work with all releases of iWhatever firmware), but there's Floola.
In my past experience it's been much better than iTunes (in terms of not breaking stuff and being a PITA) for connecting to my iPod Nano. -
Re:On the plus side...
I dunno. I guess he was just trying to floola you or something.

Re:If they'd stop putting a bad taste in my mouth.
2. Stupid itunes making it a hassle to give my wife a copy of something WE own legally (or often was free in the first place).
Ever tried Floola? It works great for me. Never had a need to use itunes since.

Re:Well, if Apple is any indication...
If you really like the hardware, get floola or something like it:

They explain how to add songs to the ipod, and how to copy songs off of the ipod, in the help.

Re:The new "better" driver model sucks.
There are apps that take the place of iTunes (I don't own an iPod, but I imagine that they work just fine). I think they usually just use usb mass storage to transfer data and then build the music database. Floola looks pretty nifty, it will run directly from the iPod on several different platforms:

Options?
Possible options...
1. Upgrade to XP.
2. Wait for iTunes 8.1 fix.
3. Use Floola (or something similar) instead of iTunes.
4. ???
5. Profit! -
Re:Stop being an insightful troll
Breaking it down even further.
Having the iPod be recognized as a USB mass storage device while still requiring custom software to load music onto it is a good design. The iPod works by reading a custom database that points to the actual music files on the device. The remaining space can be used for storage of files like a normal USB drive. I personally keep various utilities on mine including Floola.
I'm sure by looking at the box that you can see this it's not big enough to fit a normal CD in it. Also note that mini-CDs are not an option because most (if not all) slot loading Macintosh computers cannot use mini-CDs. I believe on the box it does say "Internet Connection Required" and you are posting to
/. so this shouldn't be an issue.Windows 98 is not supported. From the specification page: Windows Vista or Windows XP Home or Professional with Service Pack 2 or later For that matter, Windows XP running SP1 isn't even supported.
The iPod Shuffle manual (located with very minimal searching here (warning: PDF)) explains what those blinking LED messages mean. You have to READ the manual to know what the magic is.
I will admit that this post sounds defensive of Apple products, especially because I also admit to being a Mac and iPod owner. I personally have encountered many more jagged edges with Apple products than you have but I am not a "fanboy", I'm simply an educated user and I have done my research and found this solution better than the alternatives.
Your wife clearly did not even read the packaging, let alone perform any outside research before buying the product and now you are bitter for having to support it. Maybe you should just be happy that she didn't buy a Zune. Not only does the Zune have the same limitations that the iPod has but it halts writes to the device until handshaking is complete. I'm not trying to bash the device, just point out that problems exist elsewhere.
Perhaps the best solution is to educate yourself and your wife so that you know what you're getting into.

Re:They exist.
Consider Floola, it runs pretty well on linux. (Ubuntu at least)

Re:iTunesAll I want is iTunes compatibility. Sure, I can sync my ipod with Amarok or RythmBox, but I haven't found anything that works well for syncing video and I can't purchase music from the store.
This is probably the single biggest thing holding us back from going all-Linux at home. I have mostly been pretty happy with the performance and capabilities of Floola (it's pretty good at managing videos, and allows you to update podcasts directly on the iPod, instead of updating the library on the PC, then syncing to the iPod), but it's not quite as smooth as iTunes, and sometimes, after I've synced my iPod with a new version of iTunes, anytime I copy something to my iPod in Floola, or delete something, it messes up the database on the iPod. Floola's updated very regularly, but it still makes me nervous. I would probably still go all Linux, but my wife doesn't want to let go of iTunes. -
Re:What about non PC charging?

Try Floola?
I for one am keeping iTunes on my mac only for buying songs, otherwise I use Floola on both the mac and office PC, with the same iPod.
Floola GUI is compact, simple, and quite feature-packed though, and most of all it doesn't lock your iPod on a single machine.
You can also listen complete tunes from the ipod through the PC or mac loudspeakers.

Re:Slashdot wants to know
Indeed there are some very good ipod managers out there now, some that even run from your ipod itself as long as the OS you plug it into can access your ipod as a removable drive.
Floola is a free distribution, and my favourite of the ones I've tried atm. 15mb or so installed on your ipod is not a worry even on some of the smaller models, or if you don't mind losing about three times that you could have the win, osx, and linux versions all on, and manage from any system you come across.

Re:the bin should say
Did you like your iPod?
Three platform gizmo that runs directly from the iPod with no install:

Re:Why
There are other apps that can transfer music and video to the iPod. I like Floola which can run on Windows, Mac and Linux, and you can keep the binaries on the iPod itself in disk mode, so I can easily copy whatever I want to and from my iPod, from any computer. It will also update the podcasts on the iPod directly (as opposed to iTunes, which updates the podcasts in your library on the computer, then syncs with the iPod to update it).

Re:Why
Why does making it work with iTunes preclude it showing up as a storage volume?
It doesn't. You can have your iPod show up as a storage volume. That's an option. You still can't copy songs to it and have them play on the iPod, but you can get other files on and off the iPod, and you can copy your whole library back off of your iPod.
Some applications, like Floola let you copy songs and videos to and from your iPod without using iTunes (under Win/Mac/Linux), so you're really only tied into iTunes if you want to buy and transfer songs and videos from the iTunes store. -
Re:Why
Sort of. I would describe that as the empty part of the storage inside the ipod showing up, not the ipod. And I understand that iTunes writes file information to a database so that the ipod doesn't have to work as hard, but I'm not real convinced it was for purely technical reasons(go ahead and call me a cynic).
I guess there is this thing:
