Would OSS have to be writen entirely by licensed developers to be considered secure?

I'm sure glad the DHS steps in and prevents all those 1ee7 uncontrolled hackers from creating evil unlicensed, software that aren't secure.

Yes. There are a number of port catalogue systems for FreeBSD too...

"why doesn't BSD do this by default?"

Well, I screwed it up a bit :( Putting 'device pcm' in the kernel just saves you the trouble of having to reconfigure your system when you put in a new card. Well, some linuces do what you claim they do, others don't. I used Mandrake 9.0, and 9.1 later, and hw detectin worked fine. On the other hand, with the motherboard I'm currently using, onboard sound wasn't detected properly in either of them. I had to write to asrock (well, I know its a cheap mb) and they pointed me to a via site from where I had to downlaod the driver and install it manually.

But this is not the point. My point really was that any moderately experienced linux user (those who use slackware or debian on the desktop for instance) wouldn't have any trouble with FreeBSD, in fact, they might find configuring the system easier (or in case of Slackware, very similar, for it uses the BSD init system) Of course, I can't convince anyone of this, unless someone tries both. And as another poster has written, one good thing about FSBD is that they care a great deal about their documentation. Check out their handbook to see what I'm talking about, so no hunting for howtos scattered over the net. And its always up to date - wherever things differ in the 'new technology release' branch, those changes are noted in the handbook - and it is free (as opposed to SuSE documentation, that some people mentioned as coming close in quality to freebsd documentation).

Also, you don't have to recompile to get sound to work. You can use 'kldload pcm' and there you have it - as I said, 'device pcm' is good if you change sound cards or something. Essentially FreeBSD works similar to linux, but there are little differences. For instance, during boot time, my hardware (soundcard) is properly detected, and device nodes created automatically in /dev/. Want sound to start at boottime? Its a one liner in /boot/loader.conf:
snd_via8233_load="YES"
(every modul you might need that it is not in the kernel works like that). You want linux compatibility. ls /boot/kernel, and you'll see a file: linux.ko So what you need is:
linux_load="YES" These are just examples of 'easy' configurability, as opposed to /etc/modules.conf (or was it conf.modules) or was it something different (modules.autoload on gentoo perhaps?) - see what I meant?

Use a REAL operating system like Microsoft Windows or Sun Solaris or FreeBSD, Linux fags.

trust that Linux support alone will be enough to push this thing into the low-end 64bit market.

Not just Linux. Solaris, FreeBSD, and NetBSD have working ports already.

On FreeBSD, the AMD64 architecture is a "Tier 1" platform, which means fully supported. See here.

On NetBSD, the port seems to be basically functional and mostly done and is expected to be included as part of the next release. See here

Sun has announced amd64 support along with amd64 hardware products as well (Opteron entry-level servers). See here and here. Solaris 10 (which isn't out yet, but which does have "early access" releases available to the public) supports it too. Sun is rumored to be working hard right now on tuning its own compiler to generate good amd64 code. And, significantly, Sun has been selling 64-bit machines for nearly 10 years, so they have pretty much solved the issues of integration, making it easy to manage the combination of 32-bit and 64-bit applications. (Older Sun machines can run either a 32-bit or 64-bit kernel and will automatically select 32-bit apps on the 32-bit kernel but 64-bit (unless unavailable) on the 64-bit kernel with the same OS install image.)

All of which is good, because the x86 market tends to procastinate, and the 32-bit to 64-bit transition is IMHO a bit overdue. (And because it is possible that it will make Intel pee its pants if this really takes off.)

FreeBSD/amd64 is a pure 64 bit OS. There is no 32 bit code at all. The kernel, userland, ports/packages etc are all 64 bit. None of this hybrid 64/32 stuff. :-)

Actually, this is probably our greatest liability. While we can run 32 bit binary applications (can you say perforce?), it isn't perfect. Much more work is still going to be done in this regard.

If anybody is interested in giving FreeBSD/amd64 a whirl on one of these machines, we'd appreciate folks trying out the 5.2-RC1 ISO images. See the ftp link on the story above. Since RC1, lots of bugs have been found and fixed. Most notably for support of KDE and gnome environments. If you do try it out, do be aware that its still a little green in this area.

I personally, have been running a FreeBSD/amd64 desktop for about 2 months. I do subscribe to the 'eat my own dogfood' mantra. I do not have any x86 unix machines left except for my 486 firewall and a laptop. That goes for both home and work. My work desktop is FreeBSD/amd64 too.

Anyway, it's nice to see a FreeBSD reference here for a change.

On the other hand, NetBSD has had amd64 support since 2001.

OpenBSD is reportedly working on it, but I haven't seen anything hit the tree as yet.

2) Help/Guides: Handbook.

3)Patches/Updates: Security advisories..

Application availability: 9800+ in the ports tree (FreeBSD) - and its absolutely FREE. Can you say the same of Solaris x86? (KDE 3.1.4, GNOME 2.4.1, the latest and greatest of almost every apps running rock solid on 5.1 - a "technology preview" version of FreeBSD)

If that is Marcelo Tosatti's attitude, I have one word for you - FreeBSD. For a Linux/Unix enthusiast who knows how to fix things and can grok the source enough to pick out as few obvious pitfalls, then maybe running bleeding edge everything is fun. But for commercial users its just crazy. The FreeBSD developers seems to appreciate this point a lot more, and I would trust FreeBSD 4.9 over Linux 2.4 anyday for production grade work, precisely because of this attitude. If the Linux 2.4 mainainters want people to move over to 2.6 now, then checking out FreeBSD makes a lot of sense. I did after Linux 2.4.11 (the "Do not use" kernel) and I've never looked back.

That's what you get for not using a real server Operating System.
