That's a strange way of saying someone bought them. You can't sell something unless it's any good. Have you ever sold anything APK? LOL!
These are real businesses: Sun Microsystems, DEC, Sinclair Research, CA, BellSouth. Know what they have in common? People wanted to buy them and paid big $$$. Some other businesses? Enron. The Dumont Network. APKWare LLC. Anyone bought them? No, because those businesses weren't worth buying.

And you admit CA's security department was good enough that it was BOUGHT by other companies, like a long line of VALUABLE corporations like Sun Microsystems, Sinclair Research, BellSouth, DEC, etc, etc. Has anyone tried to buy APKWare LLC? P.S => Visual BASIC 3? ROFL!!
P.P.S => For the "trolls" Big O is a measure of complexity, whereby the length of time, measured in cycles, of a looped operation is compared to the amount of data being processed. For example, a hash lookup is O(1), a search through a list is O(N) (because the number of operations is proportional, on average, to the number of items), and a bubblesort is O(n!) (I think, I can't remember, it's been a while since I did this.) The reason it's relevant to a hosts file generator is that if you use the wrong algorithms, you'll find that the length of time it takes to process your initial hosts list will increase exponentially, or worse, as you add more hosts.
P.P.P.S => That wasn't really for the "trolls", that was for you APK. I thought you might need it explaining to you.

Why isn't "ping" listed thus? It could issue a "ping of death".
No, it can't. Do you even know what the "ping of death" is?
Why isn't Spybot Search & Destroy?? It alters a HOSTS file.
Because there's nothing wrong with software modifying the HOSTS file per-se, especially in the context of actually trying to remove malware.
Your app got blacklisted because it hid running applications. And who blacklisted it? Amongst others:
CA - listed as "Any tool that might be used in planning an attack on a system, developing tools for such an attack, or performing it."

APK 24/7
It may be that the reason for APK's existence is to serve as a warning to others.
Ever done anything bad, completely unintentionally? Alexander Peter Kowalski fits the bill. He's the author of a tool, apkapp2backgrounddaemonprocessengine, considered malware by a large number of anti-malware companies and organizations. He probably wrote it in good faith, but the reality is that it's a product that can be used easily and effectively to hide spyware on a computer. So many anti-malware organizations have flagged it as majorly dangerous.

See here for an example of Kowalski going about dealing with negative material on the Internets in entirely the wrong way.
So if you read material by APK, just remember that while he apparently has a lot of degrees in computer something or other, he's not terribly smart when it comes to the whole forward thinking thing.

For those new to this, the troll is someone claiming to be a defender of a certain Alexander Peter Kowalski, the author of a tool, apkapp2backgrounddaemonprocessengine, generally considered malware by a large number of anti-malware companies and organizations.

Spyware No-More [spynomore.com] ("Threat risk: High risk", "Advice: Remove This is a very high risk threat and should be removed immediately as to prevent harm to your computer and / or to protect your privacy")There is one person involved in this conversation who has written software identified as "malware" by the security community. That person is the one promoting the idea of using a HOSTS file to block malware. That same person says that even after using HOSTS the way they claim, they're getting hit by two viruses a month, two more than the vast majority of Windows users.
Your gall is astonishing.

Re:tomhudson = malscripted site owner?
No, a good reason for putting down HOSTS as a solution to anything is when the person proposing it as a "solution" admits it doesn't work by admitting that using the scheme they get two viruses a month, which is two more than the vast majority of Windows users.
I suspect the real reason why you're proposing HOSTS is because you're desperate to prevent people giving money to the anti-malware companies. And why would that be?

Very good news.
Was considering starting off a project like this a week or so ago.
Will be good to contribute to an open source project like this.
Though when http://freedom.net/ tried this years ago they suddenly stopped it.. Was not sure if this was due to legal issues or server strain.

Re:Windows users
ok here are some examples though some cost a little.
Most IRC servers support ssl. in BitchX do:-
BitchX -SSL irc.foo.com 7000 (could be .com:7000) most servers tell you what the correct port is for ssl.
Xchat has the ssl libraries static so you can use it in windows aswell. /server -SSL irc.foo.com 7000
both clients suffer on openbsd though so just setup stunnel if required I think they are both ok on freebsd now but not checked.
Newsgroups - well this is not a free option www.easynews.com offer secure connections and ssl downloads https://secure.members.easynews.com but can be a bit expensive.. or just use the ssl port on the easynews nntp server.
www
Again only free if you look hard enough but http://dmoz.org/Computers/Internet/Proxying_and_Fi ltering/Hosted_Proxy_Services/ supply some good subscription based proxy services which just setup a vpn through your browser so no need to install a client.
http://red-library.com/ have a proxy section if you don't care about encryption for normal browsing though.
years ago they was a very cool client from http://www.freedom.net/ I have not tried it recently due to staying with linux and openbsd. But it would encrypt any of your traffic through its servers, encrypted in layers which was rather hard to trace...
here is a small writeup on onion routing. http://zoo.cs.yale.edu/classes/cs490/00-01b/oh.jas on.jeo8/section5.html
they are alternatives some odd p2p implementations floating around ect.
As always things can be used for bad aswell as good.. does not mean such services should seise to exist :)
hope this helps

Anonymity and EntropyYep, anonymity is a favourite topic of conversation of me and my colleagues. Frankly, I do not understand the concerns of the "Entropy" project leader. Here is why:
- Theoretically, it is impossible to have anonymous communication on the Internet.
- In practice it is a balance of resources. The trick is that it is much cheaper to publish contents anonymously, than to trace the origin of an information. Therefore projects like Hacktivismo - Six/Four, Crowds, Freedom-Net, Tarzan, Onion-Routing, etc. make sense.
Furthermore, it is often the content which speaks more about the authorship, than the chain of technical events that leads to the publishing of the information. In Slashdot, for example, I have chosen not to show my e-mail, etc., but by reading my comments even a 10-years old kid can make a deduction about my real identity. Does it make sense for me to use IP-tunneling then?
Finally, I do not understand the author. He just seems pissed. Maybe he will reconsider his opinion and revive the project. Is he sick from the lies (?) about the crypto-protocols used in the software which is written? IMHO the theory proves quite stable and if there is a room for attacks it is more in the implementations than in the protocols themselves. How many broken cryptosystems do you recollect (I know, I know "the knapsack", but it got broken on the conference on which it was presented).
Still, even with this project retreating, the subject remains interesting.

Re:I've Quit Worrying (some)
I use something called an EZ-Pass,...Yeah. I know they could use it to track me. They could somehow link it back to my bank account.
As a general rule I don't worry as much about the government. If the government is out to get me, I'm boned.
However, consider the ramifications of an individual out to get you. If the government has the information, you have to consider that a dirty government agent might sell it
Of course, who might attack you? Now, maybe you live the boring life and have no potential enemies. Good for you, everyone should be so lucky. But many people do have to worry. Get into a messy divorce? Your ex-spouse may be interested in whatever dirt they can dig up on you. Perhaps your religious views are unpopular where you live, but you can't afford to move. Someone who hates your religion might notice that the times and locations of your trips correspond to visiting a religious site.
jeeze, remember standing in line at the bank to get a check cashed?
Not really. I only started banking after ATMs were moderately common. Thanks to people using ATMs, my bank usually has no lines. I find it funny to occasionally pass busy ATMs to arrive at my line-free bank.
He has no spare or leisure time because the very housekeeping of life takes him twice or three times as long as it does the rest of us.
I find that surprising. I do most (but not all) of the same things he does and I find it has little to no impact on my life. It really doesn't take any longer. I'm a bit baffled as to how not using an affinity card takes more time.
That said, maybe those remaining things he does make the difference...
He no longer uses his home computer because he's convinced that his ISP (Verizon) has nothing better to do than to track his every move online.
... doesn't visit ATM'sI suspect your brother is getting a bit unhinged. Part of making decisions like these is seriously considering what the risk is. There aren't any real privacy implications of using an ATM provided you consistently use a small set in locations already associated with you. Using the ATM in your grocery store links you to the grocery store. But using the ATM nearest to your home or office just links you to using convient ATMs. Not using his computer? At all? Or just online? There are solutions, and if you're completely unwilling to trust anyone, well, he needs some help.
For some reason, I place sneaky library books squarely in the "don't sweat this" category. At least for now.
Freedom to read is an essential element for democracy. To ensure that everyone has this freedom, we have public libraries to help ensure that everyone, no matter how poor, can learn on their own. To really have freedom to read, you need freedom to read anonymously. If you're afraid of the ramifications of reading something, you are effectively censoring it. Another wave of McCarthyism might drum up another irrational wave of hatred of communism. Suddenly a list of who has checked out and read Karl Marx's books would be very useful for tracking down people deemed to be unamerican. Perhaps the list was gained from library records (a reason many libraries do not maintain records longer than necessary), or through hidden RFID monitors on the sidewalk by the library scanning your books and your RFID library card (or one of the many other RFID items purchased on your credit card). As a friend pointed out, "Once you've burned the books, you have to track down everyone who read the books and burn them too."
It's highly unlikely, but government must be held to the highest standards.

One more data point and questionIt truly pales in comparison to the old freedom.net, which securely tunneled http, telnet, and IRC (but died in the post-9/11 hysteria for "lack of market"), but ZKS also sells an (IE only) anonymizing proxy, WebSecure. Note well, though, that ZKS are not who they once were: with the old freedom.net, they couldn't give you up if they wanted to, provided you chose a route with servers not under their control. Now, their privacy policy says (in usual flowery legalese) that they pretty much give themselves carte blanche to log, monitor, and report:
To securely browse the Internet, Freedom WebSecure customers must login with their usernames and passwords. This is always done in a secure manner, e.g. using encrypted SSL connections, to prevent unauthorized interception.
nice
To ensure the fastest service and minimal performance degradation, Zero-Knowledge does not collect or store any information about WebSecure customers' online browsing activities.
the above paragraph giveth
Please note that, in some exceptional instances, we may need to log certain traffic data, for example, in order to detect and diagnose technical problems, prevent network abuse, or if compelled to do so by law
while that one taketh away--emphasis mine
"Compelled to do so by law" could mean anything from an airtight subpoena to some random LEO flashing a badge and asking nicely. Thus, this service is only useful for protecting against casual snooping. It's strong point is that it uses an ActiveX control and can easily be used on (non-locked down) public machines.

Hahahahahahahahaha. That's the funnyest thing I heard in a long time. I wish it were true though, that way I would have a cool car with switching lincence plates and machine guns. On a more serious note, check out WebSecure. anonymous ZK employee

How it might work (absolute requirements)Well, first of all, "truly secure" is impossible. All we can do is aproach secure and hope.
It's difficult to tell what will be the attributes of any method that will exist, but it's not hard to give requirements. I'll use the word "spyee" to mean the person whose data is being stored.
* First of all, it cannot be done without people's permission. Every single piece of info that is stored MUST be there with the spyee's knowledge and consent. If someone wants to store their sexual preference or medical records, etc. etc. let them, but don't reqiure me to tell you my SSN / Credit Card info.
* Second: It MUST be distributed. This is because it can work iff (if and only if) the spyee retains ownership and complete rights to his data. Nobody else can even think for a minute that they own it. Even if they store it. It's paramount that each spyee's info be broken up and different chunks stored on different computers. In this sence, it would work like The Eternity Service (here's even more info) or (my favorite), Freenet.
*Third, Every piece of info must be stored encrypted. Let the user's browser have a session keys. Let the user have a few keys. That way, the user can access his data (with the help of front-end programs) and he can have a stupid form filler, but the company or Skriptkidd1e can't use it.
*This MUST be a subscription service. I believe that it would be far too expensive for advertising to be the source of driving revenue. The storer MUST NOT be able to sell the data, thus depriving him of that form of revenue as well.
*The user can pay the same way as payment worked in ZKS FREEDOM - The user bought an activation number and used it to buy the service - but the end user name _cannot_ be traced to the person who bought it (Hence "zeroknowledge"). It was awesome!
This can be accomplished quite easily, and built in to any UI so that working it requires minimal gray matter. I think that the best way would be to store it on freenet. It takes care of all the above problems, but introduces one of its own: data expiration.
Reply and tell me what you think, this topic is fascinating. -

Or borrowing the Perl TMTOWTDI, you could also use any number of Ad Filters out on the market. I personally like the Freedom Privacy client [freedom.net].
