Re:Provide the iPod
It would probably be more convient if they provided a button by the paintings you could press and listen to the information.

I just wouldn't buy a Dell in the first place. Cheap hardware at not so cheap prices. I prefer a computer that doesn't break all the time.

Most multiplayer games in general reqire a fast connection if you don't want to lag out all of the time. Online games and streaming content are the biggest things where a faster broadband connection is needed.

Yes, that is ~876 mil per year. I don't even think Microsoft would be able to afford almost a billion a year very long.

Just dumb
This is just dumb, they shouldn't have to force microsoft to pay fines. If they don't like the fact that they don't provide the documentation that they want, they should not buy their software in the first place. Microsoft never said (that I know of) that they were required to use Windows.

Re:bigger fear
I guess I am really clueless, but don't banks use a security certificate so that a user like myself won't be misled into thinking that a spoofed site is really the bank? For example, I am a customer of bankX.com and I let my browser verify the site, if it's the right site I get the right response, if it's the wrong site I don't get the proper response.
I do this with my machine at work too, I use ssh with a public/private key set-up. If someone highjacks my machine I will be informed when I log on --- actually happened on to me on a university managed UNIX machine.
Am I safe, or am I clueless?

Re:solar system warming?
Yes, I'm confused too. However, it stands to reason that we humans are doing some really bad things to the earth, and predicting outcomes resulting from our behavior may be beyond our intellectual reach.

The demonstration only executes calc.exe (if it actually works on your machine). So unless you consider calc.exe a harmful executable, then you have nothing to worry about.

A lot of publicity
They are getting a lot of attention on this. I, personally, had never heard of Pajamas Media before this. I'm sure they are soaking up the aftermath of this debate with a lot of free advertising.

Re:Think different...
Yes, I agree, but why do so many simple application installs ask for a admin password?
So far inserting a CD has not asked me for a password, but that day may come and I'm afraid most Mac users, at least the ones who install software, will think nothing of typing in a password.
Apple needs to be proactive and start developing a utility that checks a user's drive for malware.

I'm running www.nfsnet.org's client on my dual G5 under Mac OS X, two clients in fact, and even though it saturates processor usage,
PID COMMAND %CPU TIME #TH #PRTS #MREGS RPRVT RSHRD RSIZE VSIZE

Re:Startup School
Yes, I too have a five-year plus iBook that is still amazingly agile, and it's running the latest Mac OS X. The only bad thing about my iBook is the measly 10 MB HD, which was huge when I first bought it (Mac OS 9 days). I'll buy a new machine in a couple of years, and I can only hope that Mac OS X continues to hold the lead.

Depend on speed
It would also depend on the speed of the download they host, the file size, and picture quality if it would be worth it. Otherwise a DVD would far outweigh the slight extra cost. -- Get your Free MacMini's here

Re:vivisection?
Why Do people complain it's an IPOD + VIDEO? On the 3hr train to bolton when i see my GF once a month this is going to rock! anyway i'm a jammy sod. I got my video ipod free today! useing one of those dodgy free ipod popups. they actually work tho it takes a bit of effort and it cost me about £10 in the end but it was well worth it!
http://ipods.freepay.com/?r=22415138/ -
Will start different use of video
If it takes off at all I think what this is going to do is usher in a new form of video that is suited to small hand-held devices. No one is going to want to sit and watch a 40 minute TV show on one of these, your arm would fall off and your eyes would permanently cross. It's too small, its just wrong. However, for short music videos, that go with a song, and short independent video podcasts, this is going to be a somewhat new medium. Creative people adapt to the canvas that is available; TV shows are not what this is going to be about. Even with normal DSL it takes too long to download, it destroys the impulse buying part of the equation. Who in their right mind wants to spend 20 minutes downloading an episode of DESPERATE HOUSEWIVES?! However, songs with good or clever videos to go along with would probably sell better. However, I want one so I can listen to Glenn Gould play Bach on the piano. Who cares about the video?

Re:One more damn thing to carry around
1. You carry around credit cards don't you? What about car and door keys? How cumbersome can this be?
2. Would you rather they took biometric information? It is digital info that someone could HACK and reuse, that is referrenced irretrievably to YOU. I would rather carry the something around.

Re:Yahoo!
"yet another bandwagon: http://ipodnanos.freepay.com/?r=2213429 [freepay.com]" Oh, never mind the long explanation, then -- you know all about scams. The joke going around is that the "r" variable passed in your URL stands for "retard." I got an iPod from them already, so I'm fairly sure they're legitimate...

Re:Yahoo!
"but what're they selling to make up for said loss?"
Subscriptions, my dear boy. They get $BIGNUM people signed up at the low price, then raise the price, and begin making money on the subset of $BIGNUM who remain subscribed. You see, dropping your subscription to these music sites makes your music go away. If you're paying $5 a month and you've downloaded 10,000 songs, you just might be tempted to keep paying when it goes to $5 or $10 a month.

Re:Where's the FM tuner???Two reasons:
- People who are wanting to listen to 50 Cent's new single will just flip their ipod over to "FM" and listen to one of the top 20 stations, where the song is played every 5th song. This cuts into iTunes store purchases.
- Apple is a stickler for quality. They do not want one of their products outputting FM quality sounding crap.

Uh.. battery life? What good is a portable MP3 player review without a battery life test? I guess these guys were too anxious to destroy the little bugger...
