Re:This is a pointless invention.
http://www.freshdirect.com/ already does this in the NY area, it's only a matter of time before it expands or similar services are available in other parts of the country/world. I use them for all the standard boxed groceries and meat that I order every week, and hit the local bodega/grocery for most produce or one-off snacks. I will say that the produce from FD is usually pretty good just overpriced.

In New York City...
...we already have FreshDirect http://www.freshdirect.com/ Their model is to streamline the delivery from growers to consumers. The model works well in a highly urbanized area like NYC; especially when the competition is WholeFoods and their overpriced, crowded, inconvenient ilk.

Re:produce and meats? no thanks
When I lived in NY City, I used Fresh Direct . The prices were just about the same as neighborhood supermarkets, there was much bigger variety ( many items were not available locally) and the meats were of the highest quality and cut exactly to my specifications.

So?
I already routinely order groceries from Fresh Direct http://www.freshdirect.com/ . Its huge in the NYC area, the selection is broad (far broader than what Amazon is offering), the service is excellent, and the overall experience is excellent.

In New York City, we already have that.
It's called Fresh Direct.

Re:Also
me of when I could order groceries online, but that was cancelled due to the lack of popularity. I suppose America isn't ready to take the final step to pure laziness.
Well I live just outside New York and have been using online grocery delivery for several years. All the local supermarkets offer the service, plus there are independent operators like FreshDirect. And it's not laziness, it's convenience. I have better things to do with my extremely limited spare time than stand in line at the supermarket. -
Re:So it goes...
Ask yourself: how many people in the world still have milk delivered to their front doors?
Pffft, front door. The FreshDirect guy brings the boxes into my kitchen.
How many people still have their gas pumped by an attendant?
Well, everyone in New Jersey...
How many people in the world will continue to pay for TiVo?
I will. It beats the pants of the cable company provided DVRs. And if you consider time spent working on it as a cost, then TiVo is way cheaper than a MythTV box. Admittedly, many people will just get the DVR from their cable company, thinking (as so many do) that they're crafty consumers who have found the same product for a much lower price, since they haven't used a real TiVo and don't know what they're missing. But TiVo was always a luxury item. Hopefully their business model doesn't depend on every home in America paying for their service... -
Re:Density
Chances are you won't have to buy groceries from the store like a sucker for all too long. You'll order over the internet and the food will be delivered the next day. It's already taken off in Manhattan - the FreshDirect trucks are everywhere.

I love it.
I use FreshDirect in New York and it rocks. The produce is generally better than if I picked it out at the store. Things are fresher, and I can get a better selection of brands. Oh, and including delivery charge, ($3) it ranges 8 - 10% less than the ghetto-style grocery store at my corner! No lines, no cramped aisles, no moody checkout clerks, no overcharging...
The delivery times are really good and it is next-day service. I will never go back to regular shopping again. This is like when I got my Tivo; completely revolutionizes everyday tasks. -
Re:Yeah, I'll pick you some NICE tomatoes ;-)
Actually, that has been the centre of Fresh Direct's business model. As a busy cybersecurity consultant, my wife (a high-powered lawyer) and I (a busy cybersecurity consultant and freedom fighter) rarely have time to go to the supermarket. I don't think the Internet would like it very much if I started waiting in line behind Freddy Food-Stamp and Clara Coupon all day.
I ordered two kilogrammes of tomatoes from Fresh Direct. My personal chef claimed that they were without exception the freshest and most juicy that she's ever used. The bruschetta she baked using them was exquisite and pleased our guests mightily.
In short, I highly recommend FreshDirect.
