Once you strip away the official MS hype, Bill Gates is anything but self-made. Yes, he's a very shrewd businessman who understands software, but he got two helpful head-starts:
1. His parents were millionaires. He wasn't some ordinary middle-class geek kid. His parents were able to send him to private school and buy him computer hardware that (back then) cost thousands of dollars.
2. Microsoft got the DOS contract through nepotism. Bill's mother was a friend of IBM's CEO, on many of the same charity and corporate boards. That's why IBM bought the OS from Microsoft, not the company that actually developed it. -

Misleading, not "overpromising"
Just as an example, look at Anno 1503 published by Sunflowers and distributed by EA. To this day they failed to provide multiplayer, mistreated customers who inquired about the status of the "patch" that never came, yet even now the demo available online still has a nice outtro screen screaming about the best "multiplayer" experience ever. Only after I had a bout with them and created a Website http://home.fuse.net/slipstreamscapes/ in order to institute a class-action lawsuit, as well as after exposure here on Slashdot http://slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=04/02/13/21352
4 5, did they finally announce that no patch would ever be released. Ironically, they had plenty of time to create a single-player add-on in the meantime. Now they are supposedly working on a new sequel, again promising mountains and valleys...
This trend is more of a rule than exception nowadays (I can think of at least dozen games in no time where I got burned in a similar fashion but never did anything about it) and we as investors in their products should finally stand-up and fight for our rights as consumers. In this case, there is enough of evidence to institute at least a lawsuit in a small claims court demanding money back for a product that did not deliver (especially in my case where I bought the game solely for the multiplayer experience).
I used to buy at least 2 games per month, nowadays (partially because I am not so much interested in gaming any more) I do not buy games any more, mainly because I am sick and tired of the lies and misleading politics by the game publishers.
It's about time to show these corporate bullies that we will not take this any more. -

Since when is twice as much "only a few bucks more"? Hint: AOL doesn't count as one of "the local dialup providers".
The main local dialup provider in Cincinnati is Fuse, run by Cincinnati Bell, who also provide broadband service (sure, laugh at the name, but I've been happy with my 6+ years of very good service).
Last I checked, Fuse dial-up costs about $17/month, or $12/month when combined in certain ways with other phone services. So the parent poster has a point - $30/month is not exactly "only a few bucks more." -

You are referring to the Nyquist criterion, which states that in order to guarantee you are not losing analog signal information you must sample your source at twice the frequency of the source.

I don't believe it has anything to do with Fourier, or more likely, it can be understood very simply without any knowledge of advanced mathematics (see the link)
I both agree and disagree with you on your above points... it seems unlikely that the average person can hear about 20khz, but that doesn't necessarily mean that sampling at a higher frequency is pointless. It seems somewhat intuitive that the lower ranges would be that much more "correct". I.E. it can't hurt to sample faster, but it probably doesn't help so much.

Bill Gates happened to know something about computers, happened to get his hands on a lucrative contract and most importantly, knew to throw everything into it, and how to milk it for all it was worth.

For what it's worth, my ISP has done exactly what you say for their dynamic IP customers. (Blocked outbound port 25 connections to all IPs but their mailservers.) It bugged me at first, but I set up my company's mailserver to listen on port 26 as well as 25, and now I can still relay my outbound mail. (No, we're not an open relay, don't bother trying.)
Static IP accounts can still make outbound port 25 connections, as it should be. All in all it makes sense. -
