You want this
JSPager. It used to be located here:
http://hem.fyristorg.com/jspage/
Unfortunately, it's gone. It was the best windows virtual desktop pager I've found. Very simple and lightweight, and none of the fluffy bloated options on any of the other ones. Completely configurable too. If you manage to find it, post the link here, I've been looking for it. -
Re:smash's world: I'm almost slashdotted right nowI just tested Google Talk with Coccinella and it worked. Here are the instructions for people interested in it:
- Jabber ID: youremail@gmail.com
- Password: password_from_your_gmail_account
- Disable the option "scramble password"
- IP Address: talk.google.com
- Port: 5223
- Enable the SSL option, but disable the SASL option.
- After this you can log in on Google Talk!
-
Nifty one
Coccinella
This is a Jabber client with integrated whiteboard, all built in TCL/Tk so it builds and runs on Windows, Linux and OS X. -
Re:Jabber anyone? (whiteboard)
Apparently yes, with The Coccinella jabber client.
-
Re:Been There
This was the first link after I put "jabber whiteboard" into google
... -
Re:why?
Because there is a major advantage to switching to an open IM protocol.
For one, you can write your own client to work with the service(s). Secondly, the service(s) are not dependant on a specific client so the IM network as a whole is substantially more secure.
I love jabber. Checkout Coccinella.
There are multitudes of other clients available, widely, for just about any platform you can think of.
Just like other open source projects, open source IM protocol(s) bring 'choice' back into the users hands. Sure, you can download Trillian or whatever and get on multiple IM services - but it's messy and the proprietary protocols (particularly Yahoo) are constantly being changed to prevent other messenger apps from working on their networks.
Just love it. Man, hope Google does do this. *Laughs* Like I needed another reason to love Google. :) -
Re:Not really.
They have so many clients that it must be difficult to add a new feature everywhere. Furthermore it must take a lot of work
to keep the transports running. If this work had been invested better then Jabber would have been more succesful.
If you want to see Jabber with features, have a look at Cococinella, a Jabber based whiteboard. Sadly Coccinella is a standalone client, so you can only use it's features if your friends are also using coccinella. It is fun to use such a client once or twice, but in the end you give up on starting the client each morning. -
Personalize and Extend Re:3Dtop one ...
My use of a desktop, and esp. the 3D Desktop is very personal, and I use a lot of tools to achieve what I want. It would take a long time to convey what I do, but let me try to start by answering your specific questions
...Most people's desktops just seem to be a rather disorganised collection of shortcuts and temporary documents
This is true as M$ could never really communicate what they were trying to do with the Desktop Metaphor. And their tendency to define "special folders" and then hide them in the Windows subfolder was not very helpful
... And I think in their Win XP version they have tried to retrace their steps - emphasizing a clean desktop, automatically removing unused icons etc ... Personally I believe, M$ screwed by taking this approach and have wasted the whole paradigm of Desktop ..It would help if Windows didn't forget where your desktop icons were when you do things like change res, but even so it just seems like a dumping ground.
I use a program called Iconlock which gives me the option os saving in the Right-Click Context Menu of the Desktop. Looks now it is hard to get a free copy but I have an older and free version of it. Let me know and I can upload it somewhere for you. Otherwise you might find better substitutes that achieve the same goal. Iconlock lets you save the various arrangements of the icons
... The saving mechanism is quite extensive, and more you use it the more powerful it becomes esp when you redefine the Desktop folders. You could use TweakUI to redefine your Desktop. Use the program to define ANY folder (not just c:\win\desktop) to become your desktop. It does make you Log On/Off but it is a minor irritant. That way you can get whatever icons you want on your Desktop using TweakUI, and then resort to the saved Icon arrangement using Iconlock.
The apps I use everyday go on the quick launch bar.
QuickLaunch is my place of choice for Icons. Notwithstanding the fact that people say too many icons there make it load slow- I have about 130 icons, and I am doing just Fine. It is nice because no matter where you are, you can always hit the Windows button on the Keyboard, and all your shortcuts are immediately there
...As it stands I find an incontinuity between the spatial desktop and the list based files/folders in a file manager.
This is the crux of the problem, and there is no complete solution to it. In fact you have to balance the flow of information from 1D listing, to 2D X-Y plane, (and extending it with Virtual Desktop Manager like JS Pager using the Natural Skin) to the 3D using 3Dtop. Actually the 3Dtop window is just a window and you can make it just one of the virtual windows on the JS Pager
..... In each of the 1D, 2D, and 3D, there are nestings and recursions of information, and also there are pseudo layers, i.e.1.5 D, 2.5D, and you also have to look at the temporal aspect. So, it does take a little while to be able to make a packet of information move from one type of dispaly to another, and as you can't preserve all the information tradeoff's have to be made. It is these tradeoff's that make it hard to describe my system. Then I use programs like Peepshowlite to be able to cut thru layers, and the Peepshow Full program lets you make multiple incisions
...To control which windows stay on the top, and to control their transparency I use the program PowerMenu
...Anyway, I know you must be thoroughly confused by now, but all of these and many more utilities come

Re:It would be nice if....
Try The Coccinella for whiteboard stuff. Works great, peer to peer or Jabber modes, lots of cool features. The developer just added chess to it, too. Fun little app that works on all Windows, Macs, and Linux.

Real Home Audio Improvements
I just wish some of the simpler features on pro audio equipment would work it's way down to consumer level stuff. Companies have no real incentive to clean up the sound since they can sell snake oil fixes for audio quality problems *cough*monster cable*cough*. Simply using balanced audio connections on all pre-amp connections would reduce a lot of noise coming from the usual mess of cables behind most peoples home theater systems. Moving the power supplies for the components away from any audio proccessing circutry and shielding them, Further reducing noise. Many suround sound systems would also benifit GREATLY from a simple user adjustable delay on each channel to help compensate for an odd speaker placement. Home and car audio has to be the biggest snake oil industry today. I know I'm glad I've worked with pro level equipment running concerts and such. Really opens your eyes to what needs to be there for a good clear sound.

Re: best one for windows (JS Pager, anyone?)
I'll have to try that, too. I found JS Pager and it works 90% just the way I'd want in XP. Not as nice as enlightenment...but it's very useful.
Wow, choices in windows freeware. Hard to believe.

Re:Linux efficiency
I used to work quite a bit in Windowmaker at my old job and this functionality was quite a wonderful eye-opener. Luckily there's a few windows versions of this for us poor saps who have to use 2k at work.
This one is my favorite and I've used it for a few years now. -
JS Pager Virtual Desktop
I'm totally shocked that no one has mentioned this yet! Check JS Pager Virtual Desktop
This falls under the category of win32 only software, but it will pass the physical tests.
This is a great transition tool from windows to linux, as most window managers under X have a concept of virtual desktops.
This is one of those things I really missed on a windows machine (yes I have ONE of the four machines on my desktop at work. Necessary for testing, Lotus Notes, network printing (NO FLAME), and a few other things). I am one of those people that has 30+ applications running (between putty sessions, wait, there's another good app...) and I don't like to be minimizing and maximizing every five seconds. I found JS Pager while searching for a virtual desktop on windows and fell in love with it. I've got everyone else here at work hooked and it's helped people to get use to gnome and KDE desktop environments.

Re:PostModern CasseroleNot to troll,
I'm used to posting on the OpenBSD mailing lists, so my first response is do your homework!
(j/k)how can putting living creatures (yeast) into a dish allow it to stay vegan?
vegan is "someone who eats no animal products at all", yeast is part of the fungus kingdom, not the animal kingdom. it would be the same as plucking fruit from a tree and eating it (in terms of being vegan, but if you really wanna get strict with your eating habits check out fruitarianism)
With regards to this site, i figured it would be relevant to point out the vegan aspect of that dish since it means there is no cholesterol in it, which might be of importance to those whose stereotypical meal consists of big macs[3,3] and pizza (well, the typical pizza. i really like Amy's vegetable pizza).
My recipe is also quite low fat and very high protein, by the way. -

Re:Show me the source, not the PR
Here's a link to the page of the guy who reverse-engineered the dxr3 card (same as hollywood+ from Sigma Designs, using Sigma's em8300 chipset).
SD has numerous times declared that there will never be any support from them for the em8300. Instead, they want everyone to buy their new overpriced card, the ns2000, for which they will provide binary-only drivers (still vaporware, however, since noone has seen them yet). -

Mirrors part 1Visit Humpin! (No, it's not what you think!)
Temporary restraining order DENIED!
Thanks to the efforts of the Electronic Frontier Foundation and the organization and support provided by a few of our fellow defendants we are still here! Another hearing is scheduled for January 14th.
We would like to point out to all of the mirror sites with things like "fuck the lawyers" on them that it is because of a generous group of lawyers that we are still here. These lawyers are working for free (or much less than they could get by going over to the Dark Side) and don't deserve this kind of abuse.
Here is the EFF's stance on this case.
Save a copy of this web page now!
We have just been informed that the DVD Copy Control Association is seeking a restraining order against us (named as "Doe 28") for distributing DeCSS and linking to pages that distribute it and linking to pages that link to pages that distribute it.
Section 48 of this request states that we supposedly "have received notice through the MPA and refused to remove the information at issue". This is absolutely false! We have never received any such request (from the MPA or anybody else for that matter) and we obviously were not given the opportunity to refuse! Either Jared Bobrow needs to go back to law school or the DVD CCA needs to get a new firm. This is the kind of sloppy work that could get an important document thrown out.
Here is a 2600 story on this.
Explanation on legality of this information
The software (source as well as binaries) offered on this site can be freely redistributed because it was published under the GNU General Public License. The purpose of this software is not illegal copying of DVD disks. It is meant to provide information necessary to be able to program a DVD player for Linux. To do this, the CSS system needs to be incorporated in the player. Recently the (very weak) DVD content scrambling system was deciphered, freeing the way for a Linux DVD player. The CSS system is not a copy protection system, since it does not prevent copying of the disk. Writing information about the way an encryption scheme functions is completely legal. The source code and binaries on this site are completely legal too, since they contain no code from the DVD consortium or its members. The sources and programs on this site were written by third parties using clean-room reverse engineering methods which are (ready?) completly legal.
Attention www.rhythm.cx was hosting a list of mirrors for these files. That list of mirrors has been replaced with a page reading "This site has been taken down for legal reasons." Here's what the maintainer put on the site the day it was shut down:
NOTE (Thu, Nov 11, 12:17pm EST): I've recently been informed that a law firm which is likely to be one that would try get these mirrors taken down has been visiting this mirror site as well as others. With that said, there is a possibility that I may have to remove this site in the near future because like everyone else, I can't afford to go to court to fight it. Luckly, it seems fairly unlikely that any law firm will ever be able to get rid of all these mirrors at this point (there are currently 41 in 8 different countries and this list is growing every day). However, I have only seen very few mirror _lists_ like this one anyplace. If anyone has the resources, it might be wise to mirror this list of mirrors as well so that the right people will still know that these mirrors exist.
Here is a 2600 story with more details on how rhythm.cx was shut down.

Numbers are only for the maintainer's convenienceWe apologize for the length of time between updates. This list has gotten quite large and thus more difficult to maintain.
Much thanks to this site for listing mirrors of the mirror lists.

OOPS - Trying Humpin list againYou have one bat and there are 100 million holes Visit Humpin!
If you need a REAL reason to host these files, try reading this. Truth has never been more purely distilled.Save a copy of this web page now!
Current Mirrors Last updated: Thu, Dec 30, 2:55am EST
Numbers are only for the maintainer's convenienceMuch thanks to this site for listing mirrors of the mirror lists.

MirrorsYou have one bat and there are 100 million holes Visit Humpin! (No, it's not what you think!)
