Re:Blu-ray??

"Universal Studios Home Entertainment has completely stopped producing UMD movies, according to executives who asked not to be identified by name. Said one high-ranking exec: "It's awful. Sales are near zilch. It's another Sony bomb -- like Blu-ray.""
Would say a lot more if Universal were backing BD-ROM at all but having a real executive state an opinion is good. -
Re:Gamecloud server statsThank you for making me take the time to "read" this article.
;-)I found the fourth picture rather enlightening; it reminded me of the difference between ludes (left) and coke (right).
(Who would have thought Sandra Bullock's sister was a coke head?)

Re:Gamecloud server stats
I agree. The fact I spent more time looking at those pics than reading the article.....erm, nevermind. Of special note, I LOVE the name tag hanging off the exposed cleavage in this picture; http://www.gamecloud.com/img/orig/00/31/89/003.jp

Re:you mean like these ones?
Informative? This should have been rated redundant. All he did was post links to pictures in TFA. Now I hit "Post Anonymously" as this comment of course is going to go "offtopic." Oh well, how about a link to the picture that most represents the girls I would like to see if I actually cared enough about gaming to go. You can still see that they have bodies, but they aren't dressed overly slutty (You'd see far worse at most concerts) and the smile of the girl on the right alsmost looks natural (The one on the left does look a little forced, almost to the point of condescending. I think I just ignored her.) Although these girls do look kinda like they're having some fun with the whole thing too.

Re:Realism.
Well, I'm guessing most Kirov class ships don't have these.

Re:Bizarre commentary on typical beaten-up geeks
Rockstar is already working on it.
What's that? The sound of a million nerd voices screaming out in terror and then suddenly silenced... -
Re:Omegathon? So the moderators have no idea that the Omegathon is a huge part of PAX either. Very well then. Let me sum up by quoting from an interview on the subject:
(There's) the Omegathon. Twenty Omeganauts were selected from the pool of pre-registrants to take part in this three-day multi-genre duel. Starting Friday they work their way through single-elimination matches in tabletop, console, PC, and arcade games until only two remain. They'll be set on the stage in front of 2,000 of their peers for a final showdown on the big screens. The game? It's a secret. The prize: a Light Side or Dark Side Alienware Star Wars gaming rig (winner's choice), every NES product ever made, and eternal glory.
Yes, it's a big part of PAX. Last year's final secret showdown game was...PONG. Yes, a lot of people were excited about it. No, I haven't even heard anything about it save for the victor's name, "Coreside" (and mad props to Coreside for winning).
No, it's not off-topic. Yes, it was an attempt at a humorous but serious demand for information. No, I still don't know what the final game was.

Stuff
First, there's some good info on this link (thanks to another
/. post in this thread):
http://www.gamecloud.com/article.php?article_id=10 68
Like "Barring things like getting the GPL license all squared away, Carmack told the crowd the Q3A source code could be released as early as next week."
So for all the people asking about GPL, yes it will be GPL, just like all the past id ones.
Second, id deserves major props for doing this. Sure Q3 is a bit old but you know what? Its still played.
http://archive.gamespy.com/stats/
The 5th most played multiplayer online FPS in the world right now is Wolfenstein: Enemy Territory. Which is based on the Q3 engine. Probably its that popular because its also a free standalone expansion :)
Some other titles:
Medal of Honor Allied Assault, Star Trek: Elite Force.
Medal of honor holds position #9, Q3A holds #10 and expansion to MOH holds #11.
So with Q3 and its liscened games holding 4 out of the top 11 most played online FPS slots (and it could be more, I dont know if any of those other top games are based on quake 3, I know that half life is based on q1 stuff and it and its mods are still #1), I'd say its still dang popular. So all those comments about "this is old and wont matter" I dont think thats true.
I love the model of getting the majority of money from a game/engine and a few years later releasing it as GPL. AND they continue to sell liscenses to people for engines they have GPLed in case a company doesn't want to release as GPL a game they make based on it. I wish more companies would do this. Anyway, again, major props to id. -
And if you actually want to read the comments...
And if you actually want to read Carmack's comments it's helpful to have a link to them rather than the Planet Quake homepage:

Re:Here's my reality...
Didn't you hear? All three consoles are going to have wireless controllers--oh, and now all consoles are promising proper online play, just five years after the Xbox and ten years after PC!
A lacklustre joke, I know, but that's all this so-called next generation deserves. I'm as tired as the parent. I think the response to this sort of thing so far has been: "You already have Katamari Damacy--did you want more?" Well, yes please, actually. "New" doesn't constitue gravity guns, instances, squad commands, or new vehicles, believe it or not. But so long as incremental improvements are accepted as innovations or revolutions, and the actual innovations regarded as singular oddities, dismissing their revolutionary potential, that'll remain the case.
Move units blah, big business blah. This post-E3 industry-wide excitement/guilt trip has got me too worn to be much more critical. Although I am very interested in those "Emerald Pods".
