Stay away from Vancouver CanadaIn British Columbia Canada there are lots of tech jobs, but overall the pay is crap. Add to that a total of 14% sales tax on most goods and anywhere from 17 to 53% income tax, and you might as well Take a job at McDonalds in any other city. As well, the provincial gov't has taken away rights to overtime pay, time off, etc. ONLY for high tech workers. For more info click here.
So...if anyone's looking for a Linux sysadmin/Technical Manager, drop me a line. Seriously.

Your politics are repugnant, but I agreeFirst of all, a big merry "Fuck you" to all this shit about corporations. This country was built by working men, who have been ripped off since the beginning of time, until they got smart and formed the union.
Technology patents keep the world honest, and stop The Man from selling good American jobs down the river to Mexican and Indian monkeys (this is not a racist term) who will work for peanuts. Putting us right back where we were before we even formed the union.
Geeks and programmers get the bad end of the stick because they have no union. Sure we all know some story about a guy with a hundred million of stock options in his back pocket, but for every one of him there's a hundred poor slumps of sysadmins, bleary eyed from lack of sleep, forgotten what a weekend used to be, making barely enough to keep him in rent. And praying to hell that APple don't export his job to the freakin' Chinese.
I've got my card for the Computer Engineers Unions (Local 3-10, not affiliated with the CIO or AFL). HOw about you? Gonna join now, or after your job goes to India?
--AC because, officially, this is a non-union shop.

Re:A big -1 to taco (Off Topic)Agreed.
The real thing is, after a discussion I had in private email with CmdrTaco...he really is a complete egotistical ass. Slashdot has evidently gone to his head, or else he just never was very good at dealing with other humans. Now he bitches about too many sites with the word "Geek" in their title. Wah. You run Slashdot, get used to the word. Even more so...you with on Geeks in Space...so it's awful and horrible when others use it, but you...you're an original.

Re:But why?Oh hell yeah, I'd do it.
And you know, it wouldn't be terribly hard either...I know a local organic produce place allows you to order over the web, a couple pizza places allow you to do the same. God knows you could buy clothing, software, amusements, whatever over the net...though if you run out of something, expect a few days or weeks before it arrives.
One thing though...it order to make this really fair they should take away his phone line and give him cable access...that way he really is restricted to using the net for everything instead of just ordering take-out all year. And he should not be allowed to talk to his friends or neighbours and ask them to bring things over for him. Otherwise this would be a pointless effort (though, temptingly lazy).

BorisToo bad, he's gone! Resigned, and you've got to deal with Psycho-Putin now (which sounds kinda like Poutine, and Putin kinda looks like frenchfries soaked in cheese and gravy)
I resolve to:
- Spend some time with nature and away from linux (sacrilege!)
- Stop installing one piece of software a day from freshmeat.
- Make some money this year (maybe move out of Canada)
- Really know the Curses.pm perl module
- Give up on 8 hours of work + 6 hours of contracting + 4 hours of trying to learn more + 4 hours of scanning for better jobs + 1.5 hours of a movie +
.5 hours of bathroom activities = 24 hours days with no sleep whatsoever.

CmdrTaco hates geeksCompletely honest here, I still have the emails from Rob.
At one point I posted a submission to Slashdot about my site: Geekrights.org, and since I heard nothing after a couple weeks I decided I'd find out what it takes to get listed on Slashdot. My intention was not to get Slashdotted, I think that's an idiots game. But when you've got a website you believe in, you try to promote it.
So...I emailed CmdrTaco (Rob Limo) and asked in a very nice way..."what does it take to get listed on Slashdot?".
I got this frigging major nasty email from him, telling me my site was pointless, overdone, ignorant, and pretty much sucked the sweat of Jar Jar's privates (I'm prolly gonna lose any chance of a moderators liking this post because of the last phrase). Well, I can't say I was crushed, but it wasn't the nicest feeling. Heck, I even stopped reading Slashdot for a while because of it.
About a week later CmdrTaco announced "Your rights online", and I felt anger, disappointment, annoyance. The similarity is not small.
So I wrote Rob another letter, this time asking him why he would do this, when Geekrights.org wasn't likeable enough. His response was "I'm sick and tired of the word GEEK, it's overused, trendy, and I'm sorry I named my radio show "Geeks in Space". And more, Your Rights Online is nothing like Geekrights.org" Effectively..."Blow me, jerk", or at least that was the impression I got.
So anyway, my impression as unbiased as I try to be, yet biased I am, is that Rob is kind of a jerk, Slashdot is still a good read, but I definitely wouldn't want to be affiliated with it without some major turnaround in their policies.

Re:3d VR game that didn't have a vehicleYou don't have to go to that extent...
Get a giant beachball, put the person inside it, deflate it slightly enough that the bottom flattens out, and place this and the person inside on a rack of ball-bearing sensors. The person will be able to walk in any direction, and if the ball bearings are slightly stiff, the person won't keep falling flat on their ass.

Re:Can't see it happeningI can definitely see it happening. Here's the point I'm trying to make:
I LOVE linux, both in principle, in $ savings, and in utility. But do you think M$ could develop a better OS if they put money into it? Oh hell yeah, and I bet they are already doing so in some deep lab at Redmond (that's my conspiracy theory for today anyhow).
Look, pretend for a second you are Bill G. You've got a ton of cash up the wazoo, you -really- like computers and spend all your time thinking up ways for technology to advance in forms like wearable computers, worldwide internet technology, etc. Do you think he is dumb enough to just let Linux win? Not a chance. He's going to go balls to the wall developing and OS that takes things to a new level, learning from Linux and the thousands of developers that work on it for free and stealing the ideas behind them all without the slightest repercussion (how do YOU enjoy working for Microsoft?). He's not going to make huge mistakes in buggy software anymore, he'll soon stop developing exclusively for the AOLuddites and other technophobes and work on an OS that everyone can use, one that doesn't crash, is cheap, is portable, and can win.
All the way through this he's going to look at the world that he is helping to create with the entire thought that he is doing us all a big big favour. And he's right. As much as Windows needs competition, Linux needs it more. In order to develop something that can compete, we're going to have to capture the workstation market.
Now think about that...Windows has the workstation market by the balls. Linux is making very minor headroads in this, but is not yet a real competitor. Linux has the ability as it is to have the server market by the balls in the same way. Yet we're moving to a situation where Linux developers are just barely starting to move to the workstation market. Tie the two together, mix and meld, and you've got our Buddy Bill using Linux principles to develop a great operating system capable of taking over both the server and workstation markets.
Will I use this new mix of OS? Damned rights. After seeing just how difficult it is comparative to get a Linux workstation up and running (setting up X anyhow) to the same level as a Win98 system, I'd have a huge temptation to use and OS that was completely usable in a 1/2 hour of installation without worrying too terribly much about hardware compatibility, that was stable for extended periods, and didn't have a learning curve that could stun a goat.

On a VERY related topic...I run a site called Geekrights.org, which covers many of the same topics and more. I hope that CmdrTaco doesn't put me out of business, but I definitely know (after the interviews, emails, phone calls) that this is a growing topic. Certainly all the work I've put into doing this site has been worth it in the realizations I've had on my own.
Some of the most amazing things that I'm seeing throughout this are the things that high-tech workers are putting up with in the workplace. We're talking outright abuse in some cases. Others are finally working out what they really make for their time (wages divided by hours) and realizing that they aren't that far ahead of working at the 7-11.
But hey, saving money in the bank is easy when you never have time between sleep and work to spend it!

For that matter, it's just a 'movie'. It's not an 'epic'. Pauly Shore makes 'movies', Anna Nicole Smith makes 'movies', and this should be lumped in with them.
The real point of this is, why in the world should Alec Guinness be given any sort of grief for disliking this media-vehicle, over-blown piece of kiddie-oriented tripe? I'd be embarassed myself if I acted in it. I'd be a whole lot more embarassed if I'd written it.

Re:3D engine as _first_ project?!So now we're going to have a bunch of high schoolers (or whatever) running around claiming that they've written games better than quake in a language written for newbies, without even understanding the inner nuts and bolts of the process which goes on.
You don't perhaps think that when they attempt to build a 3D engine using Python they are going to run into some difficulties and very quickly learn that Python is not the best language for this? I suspect that no 3D Python engine is going to come out of this. This will be a stepping stone for them to learn something much nicer and more effective.

Languages change and evolve on their own, and making changes to technical terms that have already made it into common household usage is ridiculous and implausible. Just another waste of time, money and effort. They probably been working on this plan since we had 32 "kibibytes" of RAM.

Unbelievable. The whole situation has been an indescribable nightmare, bounded by travesties of justice, vindictive corporations and over zealous prosecution. The stupid thing is, a very few outside of the high-tech community are screaming about this, when everyone that believes in a democratic legal process should be fighting this in the streets.
It could have been many people dealt with in this matter. None of us are pure. Kevin was unlucky enough to be the first in line. Yes, he did some stupid thing, and yes, he's a criminal - both in the eyes of the law and the general concensus. But in no way does any human deserve to be taken outside the rules decided upon by our lawmakers. This just shows us that real justice has a long way to come before we can all feel safe.
What I hope is that they call it "time-served" and let his go, êbut I may just be wishful thinking. This battle isn't over.
Even if he was allowed to go free, what then? Will be fight the government for unlawful prosecution and the removal of his constitutional rights? Segmented news -the death of a full-minded person?
I'm also noticing a huge trend toward segmented news pages on the internet...no longer is it normal to have one "newspaper" to have 15 or 20 different section, everything from Arts & Lifestyles to Workplace. Rather, places like Slashdot (and self-promotionally, GeekRights are picking a specfic segment of newsworthy items under a single broad (and not-so-broad) topic and delivering all the news they can find regarding it.
On one hand it allows those interested to really have all the news they can on this one topic, on the other, it tends to specialize people, which can be a deathwish in conversations and situations outside of the topic.
Haven't we all seen those people who will talk of nothing other than their one favorite thing?
