Tough Visa Laws in Japan but its Engineers are OKThe belief that the USA somehow needs foreign students in order to be competitive in science and engineering is simply wrong. Look at Japan. It has extremely restrictive laws on visas, and the overwhelming majority of engineers are natives. Yet, the ability of Japanese engineers is equal to the ability of their American peers.
The USA, infested with foreign students, may be slightly ahead of Japan in certain areas of high technology, but is the USA 20 years ahead of Japan? No. The temporal difference is closer to 3 years. Reducing the number of foreign students by 99% in the USA in exchange for the USA "falling behind" by about 3 years in scientific development is acceptable for most Americans. The USA of 2000 is almost as good a place to live as the USA of 2003.
Please read "USA is Right: Security before Science".
... from the desk of the reporter" -
USA isRight: Security before ScienceThe article "Science Suffers Security Complex" that sparked this discussions has two key quotes.
To start, consider the first quote.
Some of the estimated 550,000 foreign graduate students and postdoctoral researchers who help staff the nation's laboratories may take their brainpower to countries where visa hurdles are less rigorous. "They're now better off looking for jobs outside the United States," said William Greenough, a professor of international medicine at Johns Hopkins University's Bloomberg School of Public Health. "This will set us back 20 years."
These particular foreign students are identified with a group of immigrants who are relatively wealthy (compared to their peers overseas), relatively well educated (compared to their peers overseas), and extremely opposed to assimilating into Western culture. If they do not come to the United States of America (USA), their absence is no loss for the USA. It is better off without them. (reference: "Immigrants: Traitors Among Us")
One characteristic of these foreign students is their strong pride in their own capabilities. They believe that the American hi-tech industry -- indeed, the entire American economy -- would grind to a halt if the American government did not allow them to come en masse into the USA. Their attitude and behavior have brainwashed respected professors (at, for example, John Hopkins University) into believing the same rubbish.
The USA will work fine without these foreign students. If there is a demand for new technologies, then the capitalistic economy of the USA will produce those technologies without those foreign students. "It" really is that simple. Salaries will rise, and the high salaries will attract more people into science and engineering.
One distinction between the West and the non-Western countries like China is the following. In the West, people discover the truth. In non-Western countries, people manufacture the truth (via deception). The foreign students want Americans to believe that the USA needs the immigrants much more than the immigrants need the USA. The foreign students deliberately manufacture this lie, and it has become an accepted "truth" among academicians. Yet, what is the truth? The truth is that foreign students desperately want to escape the ignorant, barbaric overseas societies in which they were born. They all want to flee to the West -- usually, the USA. In order to guarantee that the USA will always accept them, they trick Americans into believing that the USA actually needs them. Baloney.
Americans owe nothing to foreign students and certainly do not depend on them. Americans simply, out of their own generosity and compassion, allow foreign students to enter the USA to study to improve themselves. Of course, Americans allow immigrants to enter the USA to enjoy the economic and social freedoms that do not exist in ignorant, barbaric overseas countries.
Americans are fully entitled to deny entry to foreign students who come from hostile states. Those states are listed in the second quote.
Researchers from Syria, Iran, Iraq, Libya, Cuba, North Korea and Sudan -- countries considered terrorism supporters -- are forbidden by law from working with any of 82 "select agents" classified as potential bioweapon agents by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The agents include human killers like anthrax and the plague as well as things that harm animals, like the agent that causes mad cow disease.
This list of hostile states omits 3 important political states: Hong Kong, mainland China, and Taiwan province. The Chinese support

Re:Lorentzian Relativity
One of the alternate theories to General Relativity is Lorentzian Relativity. It doesn't require (or indeed, perhaps, allow) time to run backwards, or time to stop, which also doesn't leave us in the lurch the same way trying to imagine what a 0 or -n result from General Relativity means.
Tom Van Flandern uses it to postulate FTL behavior of gravity and electromagnetic effects. Electromagnetic effects include the deflection of particles based on the other particle's "actual location" (as would be based on a much faster than light propagation) as opposed to their "apparent location" (which would be based on a propagation of the field at the speed of light). He proposes something similar for gravity.
Far-flung, perhaps, but objecting to it solely on the grounds that GR is "right" would fly in the face of the whole research process.

Re:A different view...
I frequenly take my truck off road, so a small 2wd car isn't for me. Well, not as my only vehicle that is. Up here in UPstate NY, we get way too much snow for me to risk my life in a small vehicle. I prefer to be the large one on the road, with loads of traction and weight to make the goings easier. I'll pay the fuel costs. I usually spend about $200-250 a month in gas. Maybe I'll get a car for non-winter driving, with better fuel economy, but I gotta find something rear-wheel drive, V8. I know my dad's 96 Caprice gets high 20's on the highway (my truck gets about 12mpg city or highway) and high teens/low 20's city, so they CAN do decent mileage and lotsa power in a fullsize car.

Chinese Threat Spurs Americans to Explore SpaceThe Space Exploration Act of 2003 was likely strongly motivated by ominous developments in the Chinese space program. In "China space programme makes US anxious", "The Straits Times" reports that the Chinese are accelerating development of their space program and plan to put Chinese astronauts in orbit around the earth. Both " nationalism and economic growth" drive the space program in China. Unlike the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) in the United States of America, the Chinese space program is tied directly into the Chinese military and is developing technologies to obliterate American reconnaisance satellites.

Looking Back at Microsoft and Netscape: SighIn "Netscape usage down to 3.4 percent, Infoworld reports that Netscape and Microsoft have 3.4% and 96%, respectively, of the market for Web browsers in 2002. Back in 1994, Netscape had a 94% share of the market for Web browsers. Gosh. Times sure have changed.

Re:I wonder what a structured classroom approach..
I did a project a while back using TIGA and the associated chips. You might want to take a look at , FPGA and User Interface Guide.
It's all obsolete and legacy now. But it gives you a good idea about how a current day graphics card is designed. Back then, the various components had to be implemented on separate chips (eg. RAMDAC's, clock oscillators, memory decoding, graphics).
TI also had the TMS34082 vector processor. You could have up to four of those in a slave/master configuration (a bit like the PS2 VU0 processor). The TMS34020 supported 1/2/4/8/16/24/32 bit pixel sizes and had a parallogram rendering instruction (Two of those allow you to render a triangle). If they had kept the product range going and allowed Moore's law to keep going, they would probably have been able to keep up with 3Dfx.
Intel also has the i860 which combined the floating point and graphics processing onto a single chip. The Intel XEON chip still supports this instruction set.
If you can access the IEEE and ACM archives, you'll find out about dozens more such processors.
Presently, you should have a look at the OpenGL extension a href="http://oss.sgi.com/projects/ogl-sample/regis try/ARB/vertex_program.txt">ARB_vertex_program and "a href="http://oss.sgi.com/projects/ogl-sample/regis try/ARB/fragment_program.txt">ARB_fragment_program .

Re:Oh boy here we go again.

That's right, every Jew thinks the idea of Israel being for Jews only is immoral, everyone in Israel shall have the same rights, regardless of nationality, religion or sex, etc. Oh wait, something's wrong with these links' titles ...
> "Isreal doesn't even have oil! ... "
" ... , but they do have matches", huh? Oh man, thanks, you just hit the right quote (by Ariel Sharon, I believe).
> So you admit they are stupid.
Yes they are, they didn't had a possibility nor money for a good european college, not even for a good school. The Jews aren't much brighter though.
> You shouldn't kill people because they are stupid.
Yes, you shall exploit them, am I right?
> You kill them because they are trying to kill you.
Do you realize, that this quote justifies Ukrainian nationalists who helped German Army to exterminate some thousands of Jews during Ukraine's occupation in WW2 ? And .. that's right, I wasn't talking about Palestinians, I was talking about millions of people, mostly in Ukraine and Rusiia who were killed, let starve, expelled, put in concentration camps during 20's - 40's, by orders of Jewish Communist Government. And then forgotten. I won't say these people were stupid, even if many of them couldn't read, knew no math and didn't play piano. They just weren't able to understand the principe "kill or be killed", ... before, and many of them also not after.
> The Israelis are very successful in hunting down and removing terrorists,
Which is not that hard, if you have well-trained forces and a couple of Apaches. Just bomb the approximate region and wait until the mob calms down. Dead civilians are not important.
> whereas the only thing mad palestinians is killing children in nightclubs and pizza restaurants.
You see, it's kinda hard to infiltrate a military base if you only have a bicycle, a pack of TNT on yourself and look like retarded arab. Nevertheless, whenever possible, Palestinians also attack military. If Isreal wants them to stop attacks against civilians, then just give the Palestinians enough money for proper weapons and training.
> How does this make Israel more likely to talk and sort out the whole mess, and less likely to kill terrorists (with some collatoral damage along the way)?
What would make Israel want to talk and sort out the whole mess anyway? Too bad they can't just collect them all and put them in a gas chamber - it's kind of 21st century and stuff...
> > will you be able to maintain your pride before God's face?

What kind of proof would you require anyway? A big face in the sky? Or maybe a wonder or two? For easter bunny, go to supermarket and buy yourself one. The only evidence of God you can realize in this world is the faith in Him, which creates stable religion, which in turn creates stable moral norms, when it affects people over generations. People who lose the faith, begin to lose their moral and some of them begin to kill each other, because "it's normal".

Re:MySQL Replication
sorry, maybe it is just me, but the whole "ARRGG IT AIN'T ACID" is a lot of hype to me. ACID boils down to transactions. plain and simple.
Perhaps you need a deeper understanding.
ACID tends to be a knee jerk reaction, and most people realyl need to be askign themselves what it ACTUALLY buys them.
It buys them a database that you they can expect to still be there, sound and consistent, after the machine blows a fuse in the middle of 200 simultaneous updates. It buys them a database that doesn't accumulate rot over time because somebody deleted a customer at the same time somebody in another city entered an invoice. It buys them queries that give the right answer, because of only ever seeing the database in a consistent state, even while other queries running at the same time are only partially completed.
Basically, it gives them a database capable of completely correct operation, not just mostly correct. Of course that may not matter to you, in that case I have a faulty pacemaker to sell you. -
Outsourcing is better than H-1B/L-1 programs.
It is natural for jobs to go to the person who can do the job who asks the least pay for it. People bitch about it when they are trying to get a job, but no one bitches about it when they hire someone to wash their car. We have four choices: A) let people come to America and work, B) let the jobs go to places where people work cheaper, C) work for cheaper than the other people, or D) wait for our economy to go so far into the crapper that no one would ever come here to work.
Choice B is the best choice. Outsourcing is superior to both the H-1B program and the L-1 program. Please read "Oppose H-1Bs but Support Outsourcing".
Anyhow, we must do more than just terminate both the H-1B program and the L-1 program.
Fax a letter to your local Congressional representative and tell her that you want the immediate termination of the L-1 and H-1B programs. Do not wait for someone else to carry out your civic responsibility. Move your ass. Do the job.

Apparent Labor "Shortages" do not Require H-1Bs
During the economic boom, and even before that, the US has always needed employees. The high job to population ratio meant less qualified people to fill up job vacancies. That's how the H1 visa program came into being, and was greatly appreciated during the 1990's boom.
Well, no, most American workers did not "greatly appreciate" the H-1B visa program. It provided the perfect excuse for unethical companies like Intel to avoid training American workers.
Economies normally grow and shrink. There will always be periods of temporary shortage. However, over time, the shortage will disappear. All shortages are self-fixing; read any book on economics. In the particular case of labor shortage, wages will rise; higher wages will attract more labor. The shortage will disappear.
During periods of apparent shortage, there is no need to "fix" the problem by importing foreign H-1B workers like Indians or Chinese. Anyhow, we should immediately terminate both the H-1B program and the L-1 program.
Please read "Oppose H-1Bs but Support Outsourcing".

Re:Oppose H-1Bs and L-1s but Support Outsourcing
That's ludicrous. H-1B and L-1 Visa immigrants at least contribute to our economy. They buy cars, houses, etc
You overlook the obvious. If unethical American companies outsource to India, the new jobs in India give Indians more money. They can then buy more cars, computers, ethernet cars, and other products imported from the USA.Anyhow, we in the Slashdot community need to stop this nonsense called the "H-1B program" and the "L-1" program immediately. Let us petition the American government, today, to terminate both programs.

H1-B Visa program is very badThe CNN story describes a report about H-1B workers. Over the past 5 years, more than 500,000 H-1B workers have been employeed in the United States of America (USA). Those 500,000 H-1B workers may not have impacted the salaries of their employed American peers. However, the 500,000 American workers displaced by the 500,000 H-1B workers felt a serious impact.

H-1B Program: Don't get Angry; Get Justice
But if Americans can't work in India, then let's kick the damn H1B's out of this country. I had NO IDEA that Americans couldn't get an Indian job. We in the West often make the innocent but stupid mistake of extrapolating our experiences in the West to other societies. The morals of people in non-Western societies like India are radically different from the morals of people in the West. To us, allowing an H-1B worker to be employed in the United States of America (USA) but preventing an American worker from working in India is wrong and unfair. To the Indians, such a situation is fair. Radically different sense of right and wrong.

counter example: Permanent Residents in the USA
That's common in many countries all around the world. As long as you aren't a citizien it is rather hard to get a job - not just because of possible prejudices but also simply because you are not allowed to!
However, there are varying degrees of "not allowed to". Permanent residents in the United States of America (USA) have almost the same privileges as citizens. Even IBM treats permanent residents (i.e. folks with just a "green card") identically to citizens. Permanent residents can get a job just as easily as citizens in the USA.
Of course, a person who has neither permanent residence nor American citizenship has a relative easy time looking for work in the USA. A person of the same status would have a mucher harder time in Japan, for example. This ease is the source of abuse in the H-1B laws. Folks, we in the Slashdot community must wake up! Silicon Valley now has 8% engineering unemployment, yet unethical American companies like Intel insist that they cannot find American workers to hire. Oppose H-1Bs but Support OutsourcingDavid Soong is learning what many Americans already know. Countries like India do not have the same sense of fairness that the United States of America (USA) has. The American government allows hundreds of thousands of H-1B workers to work in the USA, but the Indian government does not allow American workers to work in India.
What can we in the West do about this injustice?
Here are the facts.
- Unethical American companies like Intel demand that the American government allow
them to hire H-1B workers. They claim that they cannot meet their labor
needs without H-1B employees even during a period of 8% unemployment in
Silicon Valley. ( clincher

They then pressure the American government to allow even more Indian and Chinese immigrants into the USA via H-1B laws or other immigration loopholes. ( clincher : In these particular communities, most parents teach their kids (1) that Western culture is only for "White" people and (2) that they should not assimilate into American culture. These communities produce people like David Yang and Eugene Hsu who attempt to destroy the security of the USA via giving American military technology to Beijing, etc. By contrast, communities, like the Vietnamese community, that did not grow from H-1B laws tend to assimilate much better into American society.)
What we, along with David Soong, should do is the following.
- Petition the American government to shutdown the H-1B program.
- Tell unethical companies like Intel that they can handle their supposed labor shortage by outsourcing (i. e. hiring only folks living in foreign countries).
In the short term, both "outsourcing" and "H-1B" employment will deprive Americans of jobs to the same degree. However, in the long term, "outsourcing" has many benefits. It will stop the growth of ethnic communities that do not wish to assimilate. Further, "outsourcing" will actually increase the number of jobs in the long term. How? The American nation is a huge market, and there are many economic advantages to building a company within the market in which you wish to target. First, the company employees and the customers of the company speak the same language: English. Second, the design time of the product is reduced because the time for the path of consumer_needs->marketing_department->engineering_ department is reduced. This reason is the prime reason that many Japanese companies like Toyota have set up shop in the USA. When the market share of a company exceeds a critical threshold, the company will be compelled to setup operations in the country where the market is located.

The Greatest Killer in American History?
Since someone already made the obligatory Dr Strangelove comment (since we all know that Dr Strangelove was based on Teller), I'll make the equally obvious comment regarding a song by the American band "Bad Religion", where Teller is presumably being referred to as the "greatest killer in American history." There was also some liberal sampling of Ghost in the Shell and Serial Experiments Lain (still to be determined how much of that one) from the anime world. There were tributes to GiTS (supposedly) in there too, as shown in this site. Also a brief one for Lain here. Plus a smattering of Deism and other religions, as shown on the official site.
What the Matrix really did nicely was take some of those more fringe works and put them in a package that the average action movie fan could enjoy. Personally I think that's a good thing, especially if it gets people into sci-fi or anime or whatever as a result. -

Japan: "Cultural Bias Against Foreigners"Japan is not a multicultural society, but Japan is a multi-ethnic society. Several politicians in the ruling Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) have grandparents who came from Korea to Japan. The most famous such politician is Shokei Arai. He committed suicide in a recent financial scandal, according to "Suicide clouds Japan probe". If you want to find the kind of racism that existed in Japan in 1895, then you must go to China (which includes Taiwan province and Hong Kong).
Japan does not have that kind of brutal racism any more. Japan is a modern Western nation, but it is a 2nd-class Western nation. Japan has many problems that currently prevent it from becoming a 1st-class Western nation like the United States of America (USA). An example of a problem is the fact that the government of Japan lacks the will to expel 300,000 North Koreans out of the country. These North Koreans refuse Japanese citizenship and smuggle money and military technology from Japan into North Korea. According to "Japan keeps N. Korea ferry at port", hundreds of North Korean residents in Japan recently stood at a ferry terminal and shouted, "Long live the glorious fatherland, the Democratic People's Republic of Korea."
The Japanese government needs to find in itself the spirit of American determination and justice to expel all North Korean residents from Japan. Further, the Japanese government should seek technical assistance from the American Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) to send a commando force into North Korea to rescue the children of the Japanese who had been kidnapped and forcibly brought to North Korea more than a decade a go.
Westerners -- especially, Americans -- do not tolerate crap like that. A case in point is the assassination of Henry Liu. In 1984, the Taiwanese hired agents in the USA to murder an American citizen, Henry Liu. The Taiwanese government is the only foreign government to successfully murder an American citizen on American soil. The American government warned the Taiwanese government that Americans were prepared to retaliate against the Taiwanese unless the Taiwanese government arrested the mastermind behind the crime and sent him to prison. The Taiwanese government immediately obeyed the demands of the American government.
The Japanese government must deal with nonsense -- especially, dangerous nonsense -- in the American way. A good first step in this direction is building an impenetrable missile defense system and ignoring any complaints from the militaristic Chinese (which includes the Taiwanese and the Hong Kongers). A good second step is deporting the 300,000 North Koreans back to their fatherland, North Korea.

O.J. Simpson Trial was Short by ComparisonDoes anyone remember the trial of O.J. Simpson in 1991? It ran for nine months, drew on a small army of experts, and cost millions of dollars to conduct. Compared to the upcoming trial of SCO versus IBM, the Simpson trial will be considered brief and financially cheap .
UNIX has been in existance for 30+ years, and chunks of the code are very old. SCO will need to subpoena the hundreds of people who had worked on the original code in order to prove that the code originally appeared in UNIX. IBM, of course, will subpoena other writers of other chunks of the code. You will see bearded 55-year-old geeks sitting in a courtroom and waxing nostalgic about their coding experience with UNIX. This trial will last for more than a year and cost hundreds of millions of dollars.
Does SCO have the money to fight this fight?

MIT is Right on the Issue of Intellectual PropertyThe Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) acted appropriately. As an institution that has one of the largest and most profitable patent portfolios, MIT firmly opposes the theft of intellectual property (IP). Making illegal copies of music is clearly an act of theft that deprives both the artist and legitimate businesses of profits that they are due.
When MIT initially opposed the court subpoena requested by the lawyers of the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA), the RIAA had not followed proper legal procedures. MIT's opposition was unrelated to whether MIT supports the theft of IP. Of course, MIT does not support such theft.
Some Americans side with the file sharers because they appear like "Robin Hoods" who steal from the rich music companies to give to the poor plain folks who must cough up $15 for a compact disc (CD) that contains only 1 desirable song. But come on, folks! Theft is theft regardless of how you color the matter.
Yes. There are nations where theft of intellectual property is rampant. Consider the rate of software piracy in China (which includes Taiwan province and Hong Kong). Its rate of theft is about 90%. Do we really want the United States of America to resemble China? Can't we in the West live by a higher and better standard than China?

Weapons and Military Research are NecessaryThe key quote from the article mentioned in the header of this discussion is the following.
Clearly much of the military research is geared toward weapon making. But is that categorically wrong? Many people would be hard-pressed to draw moral equivalence between U.S. troops and some of their foes--the bombers of the UN HQ in Baghdad, or the Taliban.
In blunt terms, the anonymous submitter who began this discussion is dreadfully wrong when he implies that the United States of America (USA) is equivalent to totalitarian states like China (which includes Taiwan and Hong Kong) that emphasize military spending. Military spending in the USA is geared towards protecting lives. For example, in the Serbian military conflict (in which the Chinese supported the Serbians committing gross human-rights atrocities against the Kosovars in Kosovo), the Americans went out of their way to use precision military technology to destroy only military targets and to avoid hitting civilian targets like hospitals and schools .
We all can agree that merely needing weapons suggests the dreadful state of human affairs. Weapons are a necessary evil. Someone must develop them. That "someone" might as well be Westerners because we need them to safeguard the finest civilization known to human history.
Even the Japanese have awoken to this reality. Unlike the militaristic Chinese (which includes Taiwanese and Hong Kongers), the Japanese are extreme pacifists and have a constitution that forbids the use of force to settle overseas conflicts. However, after (1) the recent launching of nuclear-capable missiles by the North Koreans and (2) the recent confirmation of North Koreans kidnapping Japanese, Japanese policy makers are realizing the importance of developing state-of-the-art weapons systems. For the first time in recent memory, the Japanese are initiating discussions with the Americans on researching and building an impenetrable missile shield as soon as possible.

Linux is GayIt has come to my attention that the entire Linux community is a hotbed of so called 'alternative sexuality,' which includes anything from hedonistic orgies to homosexuality to pedophilia.
What better way of demonstrating this than by looking at the hidden messages contained within the names of some of Linux's most outspoken advocates:
- Linus Torvalds [microsoft.com] is an anagram of slit anus or VD 'L,' clearly referring to himself by the first initial.
- Richard M. Stallman [geocities.com], spokespervert for the Gaysex's Not Unusual 'movement' is an anagram of mans cram thrill ad.
- Alan Cox [microsoft.com] is barely an anagram of anal cox which is just so filthy and unchristian it unnerves me.
I'm sure that Eric S. Raymond, composer of the satanic homosexual [goatse.cx] propaganda diatribe The Cathedral and the Bizarre, is probably an anagram of something queer, but we don't need to look that far as we know he's always shoving a gun up some poor little boy's rectum. Update: Eric S. Raymond is actually an anagram for secondary rim and cord in my arse. It just goes to show you that he is indeed queer.
Update the Second: It is also documented that Evil Sicko Gaymond is responsible for a nauseating piece of code called Fetchmail [microsoft.com], which is obviously sinister sodomite slang for 'Felch Male' -- a disgusting practise. For those not in the know, 'felching' is the act performed by two perverts wherein one sucks their own post-coital ejaculate out of the other's rectum. In fact, it appears that the dirty Linux faggots set out to undermine the good Republican institution of e-mail, turning it into 'e-male.'
As far as Richard 'Master' Stallman goes, that filthy fudge-packer was actually quoted [salon.com] on leftist commie propaganda site Salon.com as saying the following: 'I've been resistant to the pressure to conform in any circumstance,' he says. 'It's about being able to question conventional wisdom,' he asserts. 'I believe in love, but not monogamy,' he says plainly.
And this isn't a made up troll bullshit either! He actually stated this tripe, which makes it obvious that he is trying to politely say that he's a flaming homo [comp-u-geek.net] slut [rotten.com]!
Speaking about 'flaming,' who better to point out as a filthy chutney ferret than Slashdot's very own self-confessed pederast Jon Katz. Although an obvious deviant anagram cannot be found from his name, he has already confessed, nay boasted of the homosexual [goatse.cx] perversion of corrupting the innocence of young children [slashdot.org]. To quote from the article linked:
'I've got a rare kidney disease,' I told her. 'I have to go to the bathroom a lot. You can come with me if you want, but it takes a while. Is that okay with you? Do you want a note from my doctor?'
Is this why you were touching your penis [rotten.com] in the cinema, Jon? And letting the other boys touch it too?
We should also point out that Jon Katz refers to himself as 'Slashdot's resident Gasbag.' Is there any more doubt? For those fortunate few who aren't aware of the list of homosexual [goatse.cx] terminology found inside the Linux 'Sauce Code,' a 'Gasbag' is a pervert who gains sexual gratification from having a thin straw inserted into his urethra (or to use the common parlance, 'piss-pipe'), then his

UNFAIR COMPARSION of space capsule & space shuThe current comparison between (1) the space capsule and (2) the space shuttle is not fair. In case #1, we have a new space capsule and a new rocket at each launch. In case #2, we have the old space shuttle and the old boosters. The phrase "old space shuttle" means that the vehicle has been used before, so the vehicle has suffered wear and tear.
To strengthen the analog, consider the automobile. Suppose that each time you drive to work, you enter a brand new car. This situation corresponds to case #1. Case #2 is where you enter the same car that you used previously. It is a used car. Clearly, in case #2, your car is much more likely to breakdown due to wear and tear. It is normal. An old car is simply more likely to breakdown than a brand new car even if we closely adhere to the recommended maintenance schedule.
So, of course, the space shuttle is more likely to suffer a breakdown than the space capsule. The space shuttle suffers normal wear and tear, but the space capsule is always brand new. Also, the space shuttle suffering a breakdown is vastly more horrific than your car suffering a breakdown. When the space shuttle is hurtling down to earth at thousands of miles per hour and suffers a breakdown, there is no nearby "gas station" to quickly patch things up.
In conclusion, switching from the space shuttle to the space capsule will definitely reduce the number of fatal mishaps in space but will not solve the central problem. It is "How do we eliminate fatal mishaps in re-usable space vehicles?" If we truly commercialize space and have manned space colonies, we cannot afford to build a brand space vehicle for every single trip to and from, say, Mars. Economics requires us to use re-usable space vehicles, but we must develop a way to maintain them so that they never breakdown.

One Notable Failure Among Joy's AchievementsBill Joy contributed magnificently to the development of UNIX.
However, Dr. Joy has 1 notable failure. When Sun Microsystems was developing the first SPARC processor and had planned to migrate all its software and tools to the new chip, the engineers designing SPARC came to a critical juncture in their work. That juncture can be summarized in one question: "Should we build register windows into SPARC?".
At the time, Professor Patterson at Berkeley was championing the incorporation of register windows into microprocessors. According to his flawed studies, register windows supposedly give a significant performance boost to C-language code. Patterson was an inspiration for young Dr. Joy.
The SPARC engineers did their own studies but went far beyond what Patterson did. They actually looked at how to build register windows into high-performance circuits, and they concluded that building register windows would be too difficult. They also questioned the supposed performance benefits of register windows. Unfortunately, Dr. Joy overruled them and forced them to incorporate register windows into the first SPARC chip.
The rest is history. It proved that register windows give SPARC no significant performance advantage over other microprocessors. Indeed, register windows appears to reduce performance. Look at the results at the SPEC web site. Power4, Power5, Pentium 4, Athlon, etc. all crush the SPARC chip in performance. When the 80486 became the first 80x86 chip to exceed the performance of the SPARC chip on SPECint, Sun Microsystems should have gotten a clue and dropped register windows. On the contrary, Sun Microsystem stubbornly stuck with register windows. You might say that register windows killed the performance of the SPARC processors.
To this very day, SPARC processors are about 2 generations behind their peers in performance.

Re:Smooth move.I'm replying AC as we're OT, but...
I like your choice of musical acts - almost a "spectrum of timelessness." I intentionally set my timeframe to 20 years rather than 40 to avoid the Beatles, but 30 years may have sufficed.
A better touchstone for "good music" is to avoid music that triggers personal nostalgia. For example, I'm a sucker for anything released in the 80's, and a little bit of the early 90's. Even the stuff that I'll admit was pretty bad, I will still crank when I'm alone.
But, if you move back to music that you DON'T have a personal interest in, then you can start to get a better feel for how long it will last. That's why I'm now mentally checking out music that WAS released in the past 20 years that I didn't listen to when it was new. This Geocities (ugh) site has a list of top 1000 songs of the 90's, assembled by various top international sources, and I'm now aware that I probably hadn't heard of half of the top twenty before today.
Time to crank up the old eBay or Amazon account and check out some bands. I live in the Chicago area, and even though every other FM channel is taken, I can still drive 40 minutes to work with the radio on scan the whole way and not hear anything good.
Thanks for the good discussion!

Apple Outshines Dell on EthicsEven if Apple computers were to cost slightly more than Dell computers, we should consistly buy the former instead of the latter. Price is only 1 aspect of any product. There are also ethical considerations. They do not matter much outside of Western society, but they matter a great deal in Western society.
As an American company, Dell is a huge disgrace. Please read the "Environmental Report Card" produced by the Silicon Valley Toxics Coalition. Dell received a failing grade and is little better than Taiwanese companies, which are notorious for destroying the environment and the health of workers. Cold Fusion"and Neural Networks: Similar FatesWhat is happening to the research in the cold fusion also happened to the research in neural newtorks. Please read the following.
To briefly summarize the tale of woe, Frank Rosenblatt invented the perceptron in 1957. It had one layer of artificial neurons and sparked an entire field of research in artificial learning. In 1969, Marvin Minsky at MIT wrote a book called "Perceptrons: An Introduction to Computational Geometry"; in it, he mathematically proved that the perceptron could not solve certain classes of problems. This book essentially decimated funding for neural-network research for about 15 years.
In 1982, John Hopfield at Caltech revived the field with the invention of the Hopfield Networks. Further, several researchers invented backpropagation as a way to train neural networks with 2 or more layers or artificial neurons and overcame the limitations that Minsky indicated. Now, the field of neural networks has plenty of money to do research.
So, there is a possibility that research into cold fusion will grow hot again.

Google and SEs: Positive Force for Western SocietyGoogle and other search engines (SEs) have ensured that people can have timely access to key items of news. Merely having an Internet is not enough. The Internet is huge, and you can become lost in the jungles of useless information. SEs provide a roadmap through the jungle and show you the way to the information that you want.
Do you remember the "bad old days" before SEs and the Internet? We often recall an article of news that may be relevant to a discussion with friends and colleagues. We want to retrieve the article, but we have already forgotten the title (or worse) the source of the article. With a SE, you can now find the article via the Internet. Many of the relevant articles shall remain on the Internet for a long time.
In general, any reasonably educated person (i. e. a person who distinguishes reputable news sources from unreputable news sources) can now have ready access to high-quality information about almost any subject of interest. Just go to the SE and do a search. In this way, SEs and the Internet benefit society greatly. Now, we can more intelligently make decisions about the actions of governments and whole societies since we can easily retrieve and review the previously read information that is necessary for those decisions. Agents of deception seeking to manipulate, for example, American society and American government will be defeated. With the power of the SEs and the Internet, we can more easily distinguish lies from truths.
A case in point is "Reality of Taiwan". I was able to retrieve key information that might have been lost in the "bad old days" before the SEs and the Internet. Using the retrieved information (which comes from reputable Western sources), I constructed an accurate image of Taiwan. This image is the same one that senior government officials have contructed in the highest echelons of the American government. The image is quite shocking to the general American public, which Taiwanese agents (including paid lobbyists, Taiwanese politicians, etc.) have long manipulated.

Boycott Products Made in Taiwan
Personally, while not be wealthy in the least, I'd rather pay a little more for things NOT made in China. [...] The whole thing's very sad. The public has such a short memory. Fuck Tiananman Square, eh? We simply should suck up and not do business with these people.
When we boycott products made in China, we should and must boycott products made in Taiwan as well. The Taiwanese have invested more than $50 billion into more than 50,000 businesses in mainland China. Shortly after the Tienamen Square incident in 1989, Westerners reduced or froze investments into China. The Taiwanese seized this window of opportunity and poured money and technology into China. Since 1989, the Taiwanese investments in China have accelerated to their present enormous level. Please read "Reality of Taiwan".
As for a specific example, the Chinese son of the chairman of a powerful conglomerate in Taiwan has joined with the son of Jiang Zemin, the butcher of Tibet, to build an advanced silicon-wafer factory in Shanghai, according to "Sons of prominent Chinese team up on chip venture".
Taiwanese support for China does not merely stop there. The Taiwanese support all the geopolitical objectives of mainland China. Specifically, the Taiwanese constitution says that Tibet is an integral part of China. While the Taiwanese demand that Americans sell them weapons, the Taiwanese insist on integrating Tibet into China. This hypocrisy is disgusting.
In conclusion, boycott products made anywhere in China. Specifically, boycott products made in Taiwan. Let us in the Slashdot community petition the American government to terminate the Taiwan Relations Act (TRA) and to stop sales of all weapons to Taiwan. In exchange for the termination of the TRA, Beijing should reciprocate by granting autonomy to Tibet.

Taiwanese Support Beijing
You would sell out the democratic people of Taiwan to the murderers in Beijing. You would allow to happen to Taiwan the same thing that happens in Tibet.
The Taiwanese people support the "murderers in Beijing". The Taiwanese constitution states explicitly that Tibet belongs to China. Even though the Chinese People's Liberation Army have beaten, tortured, and killed scores of Tibetan women and children, the Taiwanese still insist that Tibet is an integral part of China.
Look back at the Tienanmen Square incident in 1989. Americans were shocked at the bloodshed and immediately curtailed or froze investments into mainland China in an attempt to punish the Beijing government. The Taiwanese people exploited this situation and rapidly provided, to the Beijing government, any money or technology that the Americans refused to provide. From 1989, Taiwanese investment into mainland China skyrocketed to the present level of $50 billion in more than 50,000 businesses in mainland China. In short, the Taiwanese completely thwarted the Western economic sanctions against China.
Please read "Reality of Taiwan".
The Chinese have been grateful to the Taiwanese and give them preferential treatment when they conduct business in China. Americans do not enjoy such preferential treatment. Indeed, the Chinese government punishes American business and destroys thousands of potential American jobs whenever the American government sells weapons to Taiwan. While the Taiwanese demand that the American government sell weapons to them, those same Taiwanese (1) thwart American economic sanctions promoting human rights in China and (2) support the integration of Tibet into China. This behavior is absolutely disgusting.
Let us call an end to this nonsense known as Taiwan. The American government should immediately terminate the Taiwan Relations Act (TRA) and stop selling weapons to Taiwan. Every Taiwanese should be required to produce a Beijing passport when they are applying for a visa to the United States of America.

Taiwanese HypocrisyEveryone knows that the Chinese commit gross human-rights violations in China. Amnesty International and Tibet Online have documented these violations well.
However, there is something that very few people know. Namely, the Taiwanese constitution, the highest law of the land in Taiwan, supports the geopolitical objectives of mainland China. Specifically, the constitution states that Tibet is part of China. The Taiwanese education system teaches children that Tibet is part of China.
While the Chinese army regularly beats, tortures, and kills Tibetan nuns, the Taiwanese insist that Tibet should be integrated into China. Meanwhile, the Taiwanese demand that the United States of America (USA) sells weapons to them. This hypocrisy is disgusting.
Furthermore, after the Tiananmen Square incident in 1989, the USA and other Western countries immediately curtailed or froze investments into mainland China.
