Re:Never
Yes, which is the reason why it has to be reflected upon before it reaches the commercial level.
BEcause of the Internet, we don't need a comemrcial circuit, we need communication aver what is being made.
That's why I created GNUArt: To give creators a possibility to get their stuff circulating with no restrictions other than ensuring their contribution would remain known as theirs.
Now, if the gallery gained popularity it would help benevolents distributing their creations. -
Re:details
I'm sorry for you.
I don't want to advocate your sister but having been through that I'd say that I felt really alone.
I felt I needed some change.
The most obvious one would have been to die.
At the last minute, after 2 weeks of starvation (didn't it but drank a lot... Champagne and Vodka/Martini were a bargain because of the approaching end of year) I decided to make it an Ad Absurdum Reductio.
If I were to meet your sister at the time she needed it, I'd sugegst she'd do it, but not as at a psychiatrist : you don't want to make it whle resting on a sofa, with some prozac to alter your perception. You want it to be painful, you want it to be like vomit.
Tell the things you don't mean, tell the things that hurt (but warn the people that'll hear you before that you tell things you don't especially mean but that you have to throw up).
At ther end of the day, you'l feel more indulgent.
I can't believe I write this song. -

Given the replies and personal email I got, I wanted to specify something
:
I wrote "I had" becase it's over.
I'm cured.
I was having a bad time: I lost a job which I actually hated, and I also considered changing my life.
I then had the following strategy : Waiting until the temperature would fall below -10C and sleep naked in my balcony.
The cold came... but too late.
I did not want to end it abruptly because I am married with a delicious woman and I wanted it to look like an accident.
Finally, I decided to perform my auto-therapy.
I am creative, you might not lik what I do but I have fun doin it.
I recorded a rock album which is described here and available (for free) here.
My advice ?
Spit the anger and the fear. You'll end fearless, stronger and alive !
God bless you. -
Re:It hurdsThe Hurd Project was started in 1983 (it's an instrumental featuring the speech where Stallman explained the origin of the GNU project).
Now, 22 years later, a definitve breakthrough has been performed.
I see this as an excitement :
- They kept working on it THAT long despite slandering and scepticism such as yours
- The rest of the software library (glib, bash, etc.) is already ready
- With Linux, Hurd and BSD amongst others, we are slowly getting back to the same variety we had 20 years ago, when we had to exchange basic listings and to port these onto various platforms (Sinclair, Commodore, Amstrad, Sharp...)
Now, we will see it emerge and, why not, get sufficient audience to become unavoidable. In 20 years from now, it'll be like it's an opportunity as weel as any other so it's not missed, it just took time to emerge, like my favourite whisky. - They kept working on it THAT long despite slandering and scepticism such as yours

GNUArt
Good, I hope it's available for OSX so that I might use it to broadcast all the contents of the http://gnuart.net/data/musique/ directory

Royalties to whom ?
All of the GNUArt music is royalty-free ! -

Magnifique! Those photos were absolutly fantastic! Bravo. How long did it take to climb to the top of the mountain in this photo? Myself, I've climbed the volcano Masaya and another volcano on the island of Omatepe in Nicaragua; the one at Omatepe was almost 2km high, and that took me almost 2 hours to climb. The other one, at Masaya, was easier to climb; we were in a truck most of the way. but the last 100m were on foot, and I was quite scared at the summet. But, like you say, the vista is wonderful. At the summet of Masaya, I could see the capital of the country, Managaua, which is more than 50km away.
An attempt at French, for the hell of it:

L'autre, a Masaya, etait plus facil de escaladez; j'etait dans un camion, sauf que les dernier cent metre etait sur pied (j'etait assez efferayez au sommet)! Strange
It is ratehr when I go hiking in the Swiss Mountains, I suddenly feel empowered...
I guess they should not just disconnect these "users" but rather offer them to practise some intensive sport activities instead.
Hiking in the mountains is a good candidate because it is also rewarding : you get to see some magnificent landscape when you reach the top. -
While you're at it...
There's also Photoplane which consists of putting a camera on a radio-guided plane.

Re:DRM
- Yes, does this make me a terrorist, then ?
- Your point would be valid if we discussed something practical. Here we discuss something artistical and people really want to explore before beginning the eventual commercial agreement. This is also a reason I created GNUArt, to help people gather creations that otherwise would never have emerged and would have shamelessly been lost.

Re:"This is no way to run a culture."
Music is a part of our culture.
Yep, but not only Britney's.
That's the reason why I created GNUArt.net, in order to give most artistss i know the opportunity to share music or Art they once created instead of dumping their old tapes or photos...
Of course, this may die if noone helps but I'll have at leat made these last a little more, and eventuallly given these the opportunity to be reworked by others... -
Re:Apple compote
Start your own site and stop visiting this one.
this is quite manichean..
If I am here, it's obviously for some reason, be it some interesting stuff, or for the happy "trolling" (I read at -1 and most posts are hilarious, due to the context, of course).
Now, I also direct many other communities whose members I may direct here as well as whose members'comments I could forward here.
Now, there's no "love it or live it". From my point of view (the beautiful Swiss mountains), I am not in America.
So, my concept is : if you do not like it and you cannot destroy it, then help making it better.
I guess this is more constructive than your plotless rethorical speeches, Mrs Anny Nomous. -
Invention ?
Making some digital media available online is not new.
I remember having the possibility to purchase media online long before this.
Now, if, of course, having these integrated in iTunes is cool, I somehow doubt it is that "cutting edge" (even though I am a Mac enthusiast and I love OSX). -

Photoplane takes aerial pictures using a small remote-controlled plane.

Is it an allusion to Richard Stallman's speech ?

Free Software SongAfter recently hearing a few different versions of RMS's legendary Free Software Song, I decided to do my own version, considerably heavier
There also the Tompox mix.
BTW, here are other contributions to RMS art by Tompox :

GNUArt
Something I really appreciate about this move from Apple is that they are actually offering the only decent point of comparison with GNUArt
:
Besides p2p which is illicit, they are indeed selling professional stuff whereas GNUArtists are sharing their own amateurish but "Open-sourced" stuff ; once people will realize they have to pay 7425$ to fill their new iPod, they'll also want to visit Free galleries such as ours.
So, we can only benefit from this "competition".
Thanks, Herr Jobs ! -
Re:Nice to seeWell, you're a "hoarder", according to the Free Software Song
:
Hoarders may get piles of money,
That is true, hackers, that is true.
But they cannot help their neighbors;
That's not good, hackers, that's not good.
So, why not buying slower hardware and less wine (I like it too so I won't advise you to buy bad wine) and help them ? :-) -

not the first but still pleasing...
GNUArt opened a GPL'ed Art Gallery in January 2001.
I am however pleased to see that other people begin in the same direction which will make this way of thinking more and more popular until the merchants begin to think differently about what copyright protection should mean for the artists. -
why am i to blame ?
I download loads of music but only songs that I already have on vinyl records.
(or also GPL'ed music)
I spent a lot of money on these records years ago so I don't accept being called a pirate.
Am I wrong ? -
GNUArt !!!
The problems with open music, however, haven't put people off trying open source methods elsewhere.
They actually forgot to mention GNUArt which is my attempt to apply the GNU General Public License to Art.
We also opened a Gallery which we slowly fill with whatever quality stuff (mostly music and photographs but, hey, the one who criticize are supposed to help too ;-) we get from unselfish artists.
That's it, hope it'll raise some interest. -
As usual...
...They didn't explicitely mention Free Music mouvements, such as GNUArt.
Doing it for the pleasure instead of doing it for a living doesn't mean it's bad.
BTW, we have professional who gave us some of their songs (not all) which helped their fame propagate. -
OK, if...
I'd accept to subscribe to some sites (which is actually what this idea consists of) if in return they'd guarantee me the quality and relevance of the info I could fetch from them.
But such info should be concurrential, IE not taken from existing books... if it is Free, then I should not been billed, etc. etc.
Well, actually what I mean is what I originally meant 10 years ago: the Internet is the Great Library, it belongs to the mankind patrimony and as such one can't force people to pay to benefit from it.
The only decent retribution to such a service which spreads culture among the world would just be to require people to spontaneously accept to contribute to make it a place where we can getr even more knowledge.
So, well.... no, thanks. You may open paying sites (wasn't Slashdot supposed to become a fee-based service, anyway ?) but you won't see me there, then... And if you look for me, I am webmastering the GNUArt websites... -
April fool or juridical bug bite ?
- I write all of my MP3 on CDRs so that I can listen too it on my Expanium while biking, guess it'll take them a long time to just realise my laptop is not the right place to search
- broomstick, is temporarily under Linux (I am developping somethin else)...Hope they can just "see" it if they want to hack it
- the MP3 I collect are the digital versions of songs I buy as second-hand LP's so they might find it even harder to prove that I infringed their shit
- Last but not least: when I don't listen too these good'ole times songs, I listen to GNUArt GPL'ed music which makes it definitely a bad day for their "hackers".

Concerts/Expo, and other points...> "If you were a full time artist, it would
> be very hard to live if you licensed all your

GNUArt protect art, not the artist, this means that if -for example- Britney Spears put one of her songs under the GNU GPL License, she is not obliged to do so with all the rest (Thanks God ;-) but we will fight to preserve her rights on what she accepted to share,...
A full time artist may also live by GPL'ing his stuff, as if he gets enough recognition, he then may earn money with either concerts, expositions or whatever else, which doesn't forbid any other to do so with *his* creations, but just gives *him* a chance to get more recognition with fewer risks as either- being the prisoner of a contract signed with a major company
- just giving away stuff that may be "patented by somebody else"
I think GNUArt is the missing link and I'll translate it ASAP. Please, use the Fish, till then.
A former famous hardcore band from France also "gave" us the responsability of putting all their stuff under the GNU GPL License: Garlic Frog Diet...
Also, Tompox, in my .sig is the first band to ever have GPL'ed its stuff (including the now famous Free Software Song Remix and Debugging, by RMS.)
And BTW, there no License called the GNU art License, we only use the GNU GPL License itself. -

GNUArt !> But is a license intended for software a
good starting point for a license for music?
Yes.
We, at GNUArt, directly use the GPL to protect Art.
After discussing it with RMS, we agreed it would be possible:
- The art to be protected is considered in a virtual, infinitely copiable form
- The source code of art is clearly defined as "whichever information needed by another artist to modify the original"
Lots of artists trust us, just browse our gallery for free "GNU" Art... -
GNUArt !
FYI, the GNUArt Project which consists of GPL'ing Art has become reality on http://gnuart.org (charter) and http://gnuart.net (gallery) on January 1st, 2001.
The advantage of GNUArt is obvious as, instead of having yet another license, we just exploit a valid existing one.
It is still being translated to english at the moment but you have the fish until then.
The charter was co-written with Richard Stallman.

This only goes for future downloadsPrerequisites:
- Napster will tag downloaded files on the fly...
- Any file, even Public Domain or "GNUArt'ed"
- Most Napster user download less and less stuff as they usually look for what they want, not "anything available"
I also think this is the same with most people, so, statistically, who can say that:- It won't be the same for current Napster addicts who have plenty of MP3 they can still share?
- There won't be somebody to just add some filtering on Napster client in order to just ignore "tagged" files?
Now, I just wonder whether somebody actually tracked a Napster song in order to evaluates how many times it is actually downloaded? Maybe this information would just show the Napster people how useless (or useful ?) this is going to be...
Or maybe their forthcoming "tagging" will be a way for them to perform such statistics as their model is centralized.
Until then, I'll switch to GNUtella. ;-)

This is not a computer science related problem
This is an ethical problem and RMS does an outstanding job defending our rights.
Though inhabitual, his position concerning Open Source is right and coherent: You *can't* fight for Freedom if you accept concessions with what you describe as *bad*.
Now, if RMS'positions often regard computer science, it is because he is working in this area now, the real question is "can we have our innovation and creativity biaised by financial interests ?"
How can we doubtlessly agree when we see a company patenting something not because it is revolutionary but because it is common sense?
In such case, we all know "they" patent it because of the money they get out of it, they patent it as marketers, not as scientists nor artists.
So, when will they patent laws?
They actually started, it is called the ISO standard and we all know how much royalties we have to pay to grant this "honour" to an organization. ISO9xxx standards are hinderences to evolution.
The GPL can actually be applied to many domains such as Art (try this too). If we want to progress, we have to share, if we want to share, we need to renounce to any mark of property. Or to share the discovery's rights with any person who directly or not contributed to it, which is equivalent to sharing it with the whole universe and is reflected by the GPL.
I say "Go on, Richard, I am standing with you".
