Re:If you demand all your supporters be flawless..
> He's gay and claims to be a Christian. Pretty hypocritical if you ask me (or Moses or Jesus or the Apostle Paul).
That's like saying anyone eats shellfish can't be a real christian.
Religion is not a computer program. It isn't simply a list of statements to be executed without the application of human judgment.

Re:First blacks,
Maybe I got a little carried away by telling religious groups to suck it up but it makes so unhappy to hear about people who oppose gay marriage and homosexuality in general
....Your solution is elegant and simple and you did not get carried away. Never apologize to bigots who are willing to apply one part of the bible out of hate, but not others. We don't see non-virgin women who get married, being stoned to death do we? We don't see divorcees getting stoned to death either. And you don't see Christians turning up their nose at shellfish out of some type of moral indignation? Shellfish are an abomination: http://www.godhatesshrimp.com/
So please. Don't apologize to selective reading bigoted assholes. Ever. They have a right to their opinion, but they have no right to your respect.

Re:Religion
What about the other major religions?
There are some pretty explicit food laws in the Hebrew Bible/Old Testament, in Leviticus and Deuteronomy. Chapter 14 of Deuteronomy gives a good list. 14:19 says, "And every creeping thing that flieth is unclean unto you: they shall not be eaten." This is presumably referring to insects, so they're out. Also out are pigs, camels, rabbits, anything from the water that doesn't have scales and fins (God hates shrimp!), any animal that "dies of itself" (i.e., carrion), and a smattering of other animals -- no eating bats, people.
Anyone who is actually keeping kosher will follow these laws, which means most Orthodox Jews and many other Jews. Not many Christians follow these dietary laws, but some do. -

Re:Athiests update world domination time-table.
No. It sounds good.
Christians are notoriously scary people, who want to kill gays, Jews, witches, people who eat shell fish 1, 2, blacks (that's why he burned 'em), atheists etc. If there was a Christian around my neighbourhood, I would surely want to string 'em up too, just in case that damn god botherer started attacking me (a queer, drug using, shell fish eating, atheist hooker) first!
So yeah, fuck off with the damn Christians. (Also, I never claimed to be tolerant. I hate religion, it has caused far more problems then atheism ever did. Hitler was religious for example. Stalin went to a seminary before he joined the attacks on the Tsar, and when he got into power, he supported the Orthodox Church. It wasn't until after he died that the Church started getting put down again.)
Oh, I'm not afraid of karma. Mod me down and I shall become more powerful then you can imagine (or something...).

Re:theologically correct, not historically accurat
I have always loved the self-legitimizing process of collecting a few decades of writings, and then picking the ones which legitimize your organization. And then, as you pointed out, destroying anything which might threaten you, and persecuting any who believe in those works. I always thought that Leviticus was darn silly. I would love to see a collection of ALL the writings which were excluded from the bible. That must be a fun read.

Re:yes, well...
No, it's not.
Homophobia is a choice, not an immutable trait like homosexuality.
Even within whatever mouthbreathing sect of Christianity you observe, you still have a choice.
If you choose to discriminate against people because of something they can't help, you (and the Boy Scouts) can sod right off.
p.s. God hates shrimp. -
Re:Three levels of truth (maybe more...)When religion doesn't get it right, people abandon it completely. No they don't. They just reinterpret the primary tenets of the religion to suit their current desired conclusions. Religious works and religious beliefs are interpreted in the light of the present society and its prejudices. Rather than being taken at face value, they are used to justify what people want to believe. For example, there is no real prohibition against abortion in the Christian Bible. For another example, the selective interpretation of Leviticus as condemnation of homosexuality while ignoring the condemnation of poly-cotton blends and Red Lobster.
Well, unless you are someone who strictly interprets the OT: http://www.godhatesshrimp.com/ -
Re:Thou shalt not kill?
In any case, anybody who cites Leviticus as proof that homosexuality or Wicca is an abomination will have a difficult time proving that they really consider the commandments of Leviticus binding.
To wit: God hates shrimp. :) -
Re:Because I'm a Roman Catholic...
The difference is that the Bible and the teachings of the Apostles (and natural law, in many cases) explicitly tell us that extramarital sex, homosexual acts, etc. are wrong
Not to mention shellfish! -

Re:homosexualityI found last night the most interesting thing I have ever read in the Bible. I'm not sure if that should be a testament to the uselessness and ridiculousness of the Bible, of of myself.
I was raised Christian, though I no longer hold faith in any religion. But I was, of course, well aware of the animosity towards homosexuality; despite the rare mention of it in the Bible, and the regular mention of a dozen other things that Christians should be far more concerned with.
All that being said, I have recently realized that God Hates Shrimp
He hates them so much, that he calls them an "abomination" just as when referring to homosexuals.
If you didn't think the Bible was ridiculous before, please think again. Shellfish are an abomination. This also provides me another answer when my father asks why I no longer go to church: I like shrimp, dad, and God hates them.

What about the kosher laws?
God hates shrimp.
Leviticus 11:9-12 says:
9 These shall ye eat of all that are in the waters: whatsoever hath fins and scales in the waters, in the seas, and in the rivers, them shall ye eat.
10 And all that have not fins and scales in the seas, and in the rivers, of all that move in the waters, and of any living thing which is in the waters, they shall be an abomination unto you:
11 They shall be even an abomination unto you; ye shall not eat of their flesh, but ye shall have their carcases in abomination.
12 Whatsoever hath no fins nor scales in the waters, that shall be an abomination unto you.
Deuteronomy 14:9-10 says:
9 These ye shall eat of all that are in the waters: all that have fins and scales shall ye eat:
10 And whatsoever hath not fins and scales ye may not eat; it is unclean unto you.
The order is given in relation to eating, but YHWH seems pretty unequivocal about the acceptability of scaleless and finless water beasties what with using words like "unclean" and "abomination".
