Re:How are we covering the shortfall/defecit?
According to this EU Report from 1997, there was at that point in time a 1,250,000 tonne reserve of cocoa (50% of production), and the estimated consumption deficit for 1996-7 was 225,000 tonnes.
It looks to me like cocoa deficits are not new, and that the industry already uses large reserves to ensure continued supply until such time as higher prices increase production. Unless they are suggesting some other change, such as climate, will prevent new supply I can't see a long-term issue other than price fluctuations that the market has routinely encountered in the past.

https://www.wikipedia.org/ if wiki fails you or has too many acronyms on one page then ask the author if they can be reached.oh no, sdxc chips all use exfat and are limited to 4 gb for a single file, meaning a dvd iso won't fit. the sdhc was 2 gb files so it went up but not enough and according to wikipedia "SDXC adopts Microsoft's exFAT file system as a mandatory feature." i have xc cards already but if the hardware itself won't let you format to say zfs then there isn't much i can do about it...

Re:don't worry about it
This sort of test may not detect all fakes.. really you need to write a test pattern and read it back, as the writes may appear to succeed.
Programs exist to do this for you, e.g. https://sites.google.com/a/int...
When I had one of these fake cards, it seemed to me that the firmware had been designed to allow a filesystem to be created on the device, by remapping the blocks that the filesystem would use for its metadata.
Formatting utilities should really check for bad SD cards...

Re:Not Sharing
Yes, please.
Lyft's use of the term "Rideshare" is a knowing and willing deception. Lyft's creator, John Zimmer, actually made a Ridesharing webapp that is still in use by many Universities (Zimride). Zimride facilitates the creation of carpools and vanpools-- not rides on a confederated taxi service. Of course, Zimmer saw the big money in a taxi service and with his history in actual Rideshare and has tried to re-write the definition so that (hopefully) he could side-step taxi regulations.
By the way, "Rideshare" is a federally recognized term that describes an entire industry whose job it is to reduce the number of automobiles on the road by convincing people to take transit, carpool, vanpool, bike, and walk instead of driving. (Check it out: https://www.google.com/?gws_rd...)

No, it leaves Google Wallet is a valid payment option everywhere that there's an NFC-enabled POS terminal, and, frankly, everywhere that takes a regular old swipe card, since you can get a physical Google card too.

It's been done, sort of
Google tried (is still trying?) to track the spread of influenza, by watching the trends in searches for information about the disease. It's a very interesting bit of work, but as I recall, failed to be meaningfully predictive. The trouble is, there are lots of prosaic reasons why someone might search out information about the flu (or any other disease) other than actually having it. Separating that noise (general interest in the flu) from the genuine signal (particular interest from people who are infected). Doesn't mean it can't work, just that it hasn't been made to work yet.

Re:THIS is the kind of thing that GamerGate is abo
Ooo, ooo, another easy one. OK, so a bunch of the results are about this, but others are about Aliens: Colonial Marines and you can find articles defending the practice from even earlier than that. But here, have a bonus link from 2009 of a Slashdotter condemning embargoed reviews.
I mean, most of the complaints #GamerGate has aren't exactly new (have an article from 2006 complaining about corruption in game reviews), what's new this time is the vitriol and viciousness of the counter-attack that the video game journalism industry is waging against their own customers.

Re:Comcast tried to steal $50 from me
Yep, TWC did this too with the offered cards. Many people, including my king ant, never got them -- http://www.google.com/search?q..."time+warner+cable"+"gift+card"
... TWC kept blaming people for not following instructions like in the fine prints. However, my king ant, with my help/assistance, did all these correctly. We kept all the proofs, followed up after the estimated times to expect, etc. Eventually, we won and TWC gave us credits for the next month bill instead of sending him the card. It is so annoying when greedy companies do this!! They make it so difficult/hard to get these offers. :( -

I don't know, you'll have to ask the Docker authors. You could start at http://www.slideshare.net/jpet... .

Re:Put the SMART stats to the test
Google did this about seven years ago. Of the stats, a drive with a non-zero scan error count has a 70% chance of surviving eight months, one with a non-zero reallocated sector count has a 85% chance of survival, and one with a non-zero pending sector count has a 75% chance of survival. For comparison, a drive with no error indications has a better than 99% chance of surviving eight months.
Overall, 44% of failures can be predicted with a low false-positive rate, while 64% can be predicted with an unacceptably high false-positive rate. 36% of drive failures occur with no SMART failure indications at all.
-
Re:Top #1 Indicator That Correlates To Drive Failu
If you go by Google's definition of failing (the raw value of any of Reallocated_Sector_Ct, Current_Pending_Sector, or Offline_Uncorrectable goes non-zero) rather than the SMART definition of failing (any scaled value goes below the "failure threshold" value defined in the drive's firmware), about 40% of drive failures can be predicted with an acceptably low false-positive rate. You're correct, though, that the "SMART health assessment" is useless as a predictor of failure.
They did a study on this a few years back. It comes to about the same conclusions that Backblaze's study does, but with more numbers (and a larger data set).
-
Since the paper is about fish...

Not quite a dup...
I hope I'm not the only person who instantly thought of a study on the exact same topic by Google. This would be rather more interesting news to see a similar topic done with SSDs, or perhaps news about MRAM or PCRAM being made in sufficient quantity to takeover from Flash for SSDs.

US is producing 0.31kg per $1 GDP, or $3220/ton - about 3x the efficiency. So fuck China, and fuck the Leftist/Eco narrative that the US is the bad guy, and China the 'poor struggling industrializing country'. *yes, I'm well aware that some of this comes from US firms abandoning mfg in favor of buying Chinese industrial products, thus relocating US industry, effectively, to China. That's a separate discussion. -

Irrational hatred is just the start. If we don't see a lengthy exposition on how this is somehow part of an evil conspiracy - also involving the NSA, of course - then I'll be sorely disappointed. Presumably, it will involve a nefarious plot by Gates and NSA to embrace, extend, and extinguish Mono. Only Richard Stallman himself will be able to save us from yet another evil attempt to enslave us via software. We can only hope that RMS has been producing enough toe jam to sustain himself lately.

Specifically:"Do not be surprised if we place smaller bets in areas that seem very speculative or even strange when compared to our current businesses."

Bug fix announcement please
All very nice to hear about shiny new features, but I would be even happier to hear Mozilla foundatation announce that they plan to fix the longstanding bug where 200 open tabs causes firefox to crash every two days or so.
Oh, also announce that the bug where keystrokes go to the wrong window will be fixed. Thxbai.

Re: Can't wait for this!
Or it could be that their competition is the most used advertising/search engine in the entire world, Google.
Every time you go to Google it suggests that you should switch to chrome. Maybe that eventually gets to people and they click willingly. Maybe one day they accidentally click somewhere on the page and get it. Maybe they download adobe acrobat or flash and get it installed by drive-by. Maybe a malware site does the drive-by.
A DIVX codec pack causes IE to use Chrome inside IE
Avast antivirus installs chrome if you miss the tiny checkbox Adobe installs chrome with if you miss the checkbox while installing flash player or reader. Maybe you just wanted to install Google Earth and play with maps. Boom. You've now got chrome If you install any well known popular application, chances are it bundles a chrome install.Hey that's a great idea! what if we just make everyone run chrome if they decide to click yes to a popup box IChrome evangelists are taking a cue from malware writers.
It should be noted that Google is now ceasing this drive-by install method of chrome
Clearly, Firefox needs to invent a superior search engine to regain market share, then push people people to install Firefox. Or just convince everyone of their devoted followers to script "install firefox" into applications and web pages where it is completely unnecessary. That's how Google got their market-share.

Re:Great! More hipster hate.
or you could, you know, not be a 15-year-old with an existential social identity crisis at age 35. You could also stop defining yourself around your consumption habbits. the real problem with hipsters, is beneath the beard, beneath the "ironic" whatever, or whatever knickknacks, and chockskies, are still empty soulless yuppie shitheads.
I'm a pretty good speller but I have trouble with that one.

Statistical timed analysis
As I understand the Tor process, every tine I fire up Tor it randomly chooses an exit node(*).
Suppose I am running some exit nodes (as the NSA is suspected of doing). If I want to find the location of a hidden service I just fire up Tor and access an onion website with a specific tempo. If one of my exit nodes shows traffic with that tempo, then I know that's the exit node for this onion connection and I can trace the exit connection(**).
If you access the site many times, eventually the statistical nature of the tempo (in your own exit node) will be apparent among the random noise of other traffic. If you do the process many times, eventually you'll find a strong statistical evidence for the target IP address.
How many Tor exit nodes does the FBI run? How much time can they put into discovering each site? Can tempo-based access be automated?
See here for more info. From a paper published in 2011 comes the quote:
In this thesis we tested three correlation algorithms. [...] We found that while the two previously-existing algorithms we tested both have problems that prevent them being used in certain cases, our algorithm works reliably on all types of data.
This would be my guess.
(*) For the onion protocol it's listed as a rendezvous point and there's some protocol negotiation, but it's essentially an exit node.
(**) Actually it's even simpler. Tor reports the IP address of your exit node - just keep starting Tor until the exit node is a system you control.
