Re:Russians
But I've seen the ads, so I know you're a paid liar. Let's just get that out up front so you can absorb this next part unfiltered:
I see no evidence of the figure $50,000. That appears to have been pulled out of your ass just as clearly as you claim all the other real evidence was. Literally only you Russian trolls are harping over and over on this nonsensical figure. What do you think that tells me about your entire statement here, and in fact your entire chain of statements going back to well before the election?
I'll give you a hint; It doesn't make you look very smart.
Wow, I would not discuss "smart" if I were you. An extremely easy Google search reveals the $50,000 figure.

Uhm, Hello McFly! Aren't you paying ANY attention to how we are fucking up the planet? Oh wait, that's right, you would rather ignore the message and shoot the messenger with insecure humor:
* Plastic found at the bottom of the Mariana Trench
* Only 40% of recycles are recycled
* 73% of fish in Atlantic have microplastic in their guts
* Artic full of mercury
* Mercury levels in fish
* 1/3 of coral in Great Barrier Reef is dead
* 50% of coral in Great Barrier Reed dead
* Monsanto 'Terminator' Seeds are contaminating farms by routine pollination by animals and acts of natureI think you get the point. Instead of being proper stewards towards the the planet our consumption is unsustainable.
But keep whining about non-issues and ignoring the real issue of how we are polluting this planet.

Good news for my little Android app about antennas
I thought I would get less and less users in my Android app. I thought anyone is moving away from watching OTA TV. Good news then for my little hobby app that allows you to find which channels are around you... =)

Re:Censored Search Engine for America
That's basically saying you'd avoid SEO abuse by doing something about it which is not even slightly a proposal as to how.
Are you saying that it is impossible to program algorithms against SEO abuse without engaging in political viewpoint discrimination?
You keep conflating things - I'm not sure if you're engaging here in an attempt to understand a point of view contrary to your own, or just get a quick endorphin rush from arguing with someone on the internet
:)If I want to find about about homosexuality in various branches of tetrapoda, I don't want to be deluged with weird ranty and utterly wrong "opinion pieces" from idiots playing politics.
So, therein lies the rub I suppose - how do you propose to create a search engine that reads people's minds? Someone with the same search terms might be looking for something completely different than you are.
Now, maybe it's as simple as designing pre-calculated "safe-search"-esque modes where someone can "filter-out-right" or "filter-out-left" or "filter-out-sarcasm" or "filter-out-humor" modes. But assuming you can build a single mode that will in fact, satisfy the various intents of people who are resistant to mind reading...I'm not sure if that's helpful.
Well I geneally want my searches to provide useful information, so why would I want it to persistently return utterly uselsss junk?
Why should you trust anyone to decide what is useful, and what is useless to you? Why should anyone trust you to make that decision for others?
We haven't. I just searched for "abortion". I got, in order:
The NHS
Funny, google puts a planned parenthood link on the top of my results:
https://www.google.com/search?...
In fact, on that first page, not a single anti-abortion link comes up.
Now, before you freak out, please, understand this - I'm firmly pro-choice. I buy the rapist Bill Clinton's formulation of "safe, legal, and rare", and I'm not by any stretch of the imagination a pro-life protester. But this kind of censorship that Google does, in the United States, against political points of view, is brutally obvious.
I mean, brutally obvious.
Now, it may very well be that your search, done in the UK, is less censored that US results...but whatever your opinion on the matter, we should be incredibly reluctant to give powerful gatekeepers the ability to drive the conversation through editorial bias eliminating points of view from the material being presented. Any bit of joy you have over someone like Alex Jones being downranked is going to come back and bite you in the ass when a different political bias gains power, and works against your interests.

Re:How does gmail's new "confidential mode"
It's not supposed to be secure. The help page even tells you that: https://support.google.com/mai...
The idea is to signal to the recipient that they should not forward or print the message. They can circumvent that with some effort but so can you easily copy documents marked "top secret" and "confidential". This feature prevents casual, thoughtless copying.

Yes, we all know that the NYT ran a hit piece on Friday containing false information (including a claim that Tesla was looking for COO which Bloomberg has since debunked), and whose author made a snarky brag on Twitter about lowering Tesla's stock price.

Re:First rule of baseball
*You don't argue balls and strikes.*
It's part of the game. Let it be. Half the charm of baseball is the old-timey aspect.
And that's because, until PitchF/X came along a few years ago, umpires sucked at calling balls and strikes - that rule was put in place because they sucked at it. And MLB didn't really care - no one could really see but the players, so MLB just banned arguing about it.
There's no charm as shitty officiating that the sports league doesn't care enough about to fix.
But then TV came along - with more and more cameras capturing the games as the years passed. The crappy umpiring began to be exposed. I'm looking at YOU, Don Denkinger!.
I strongly remember TV cameras being placed high above home plate showing balls WAAAAY outside being called as strikes during the 1992 or 1993 World Series involving Toronto. Of course, that was only for the first game or so - MLB got pissed that the entire world could see how shitty the umpires actually were at calling balls and strikes.
Hell, PitchF/X is the reason why HRs in baseball have gone down over the last decade or so. Nope - all the homeruns weren't the result of steroid use - if they were, the homerun rate wouldn't have spiked in one year - 1994 (all too coincidentally back to 1987's "rabbit ball" levels...) Gee, HRs spike in one year, right around a major strike. And right afterwards, MLB runs TV ads glorifying HRs ("chicks dig the long ball...").
After 1994, HRs remained constant for a decade or so, until PitchF/X shows MLB just how shitty umpires really are about calling balls and strikes. The strike zone starts growing, causing strikeouts to go up. More strikeouts means less balls hit means less HRs. But the rate of HRs per batted ball remains just about constant.
"Steroids are linked to homeruns" is BULLSHIT. If steroid use were linked to more HRs, HRs would have gone up slowly as more and more players used them. But they didn't - HR rate spiked high in 1987, went back to normal, then spiked back up in 1994 and stayed there. So increased steroid use isn't linked to increasing HR rates. Do you really think steroid use in MLB jumped in 1987, went back down, then jumped back in 1994?
And the opposite is true, too. When MLB banned steroid use, HR rates didn't suddenly drop - they remained pretty constant, and only began dropping as the larger strike zone (from PitchF/X feedback on shitty umpiring...) led to less batted balls and less HRs - but the ratio of HRs to batted balls remained constant. Again - no link to steroid use.

Not good enough.
You're trying to install a security product inside a vulnerable system to detect compromise. Not good enough. Integrity must be non-repudiated.
Voting infrastructure is harder than voting machines. Paper voting is notoriously vulnerable to corrupt officials; paper audit trails are manipulable and have been used to identify voters and their votes; electronic voting machines can be proven non-tampered, and the votes proven non-tampered. The voting infrastructure, though? That's centralized, and prone to all sorts of attacks--not just computer hacking, but insider threat and social engineering.
Your best protection against infrastructure attacks is same-day registration and same-day party affiliation re-registration.

Re:Must be multiple reasons ...
Of course it's not just smartphones. But mentioning smartphones, something that almost every single person uses in these times, in the headline makes a way better clickbait than "Budget cuts have led to swimming pools shortening their opening times".
Read the entire article to get an idea what it is about.
Our mainstream media also tells me that budget cuts had negative effects on swimming classes in schools. There's a lack of teachers and parents who are interested in their children learning to swim. Public and private pools have been closed down.
For example here's a non-paywalled google-translated article from one of Germany's mainstream news papers. -
Re:Little white robot van.
I'm more worried about kids getting hooked on old person medication.
-
That comes off like a cop-out
there's plenty of actual fake news going around. Google "QAnon". There's also a ton of misinformation around Climate Change. And then there's John Oliver's video on Astroturfing last week.
There's literally billions being spent to spread what can only be called lies. I'm less worried about folks confusing opinions with facts and more worried about them confusing outright lies for something true. That's what's going to destroy us. -

It's all about how to distribute purchasing power
Historically, those who created the most value for society typically obtained the most purchasing power. Today though, it seems like too many are getting too much purchasing power, much more than the value they provide, and others not getting enough. The Economist had a story on this, "The question of extractive elites". Other key words to google are "rent-seeking."
Millenials have runaway education, medical and housing costs. Follow the money to figure out why. Naturally they think capitalism is broken.
Also, with the financial sector, something has to be done to rein it in. There's an interesting debate at the Federal Reserve, the US central bank, about "Cleaning vs Leaning" - letting the financial sector involve itself in (very lucrative to it) excesses, then sticking the society with the externalities (i.e. the bill). The Federal Reserve is wondering whether its role should be to clean up ("Clean") or try to prevent in the first place ("Lean"). You can think of factories polluting - they keep the profit, they dump the effluent so those around the factory incur the costs. Ditto with the financial sector.
The problem with relying on "Distributors" to distribute purchasing power is that they accrue too much power and they are merely human - easily corruptible. The society then grows around that source of profit, like a plant grows to sun. Instead of growing around people seeking purchasing power by providing value to society. See how much power politicians have to today, and how hard they try to get tax money, to spend as they believe with help their re-election chances the most. Distributors will distribute purchasing power to those with the best lobbyists, not those who create the most value for society.

Dude I'm a Bernie Bro
I've got policy coming out my ears. Medicare for All, College for All, Ending the Wars, New New Deal, etc, etc, etc. I don't want or need race to win elections. Polls show my policy is overwhelmingly popular. Like, 70-80% popular.
What I need is to get those folks who voted for Trump because of crap like this and folks who wrongly blame the jews for the raw deal the 1%ers handed them to realize who's really pulling the strings and stop voting against their own interests. It's damn hard to do since the 1%ers own the mass media (mega corps bought everything up, re: Sinclair Media).
Ignoring the impact of racism on American politics isn't naive or foolish, it's deceitful. The Republicans do it so they can dog whistle. There's corportists Dems who do it so they can run on something besides economics since they're basically Republicans when it comes to money. You need to call both groups out because they're doing the same damn thing: Using race to distract from a bad economy. Bernie understands that. So does Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez. That's why they never takes the bait. You shouldn't either. Even when you're trolling on /. If you've got to troll, troll for the good guys. -

Re: Use Crisco in Sodomy.
Funny how this "complete fail" company keeps earning the highest customer satisfaction rating in the industry, huh?
Funny all of the people on the forums and YouTube who can't shut up about how much they love their car.
Funny the results of the ownership survey.
Guess it's a mass delusion.

Re: Use Crisco in Sodomy.
The Tesla forum admins can't keep up deleting posts that say "Tesla took my money, didn't deliver the car".
There are two other Tesla forums (Model 3 Owners Club and Tesla Motors Club) unconnected to Tesla itself, and I've never seen a post like that on either. Furthermore, your single example is a post on the Tesla forums that is most notable for not being deleted in any way, shape or form, despite being written way back in May. FYI: "Fcos154" only ever showed up at the forum to write this one thread (and a couple posts in it), then disappeared.
Do you FUDsters ever stop?
Of course there "have been" people with damage in transit. Because that happens to every manufacturer; they all use the same transport companies. Half a percent or so of vehicles receiving damage (usually minor, such as minor scratches or paint chips) in transit is normal. With a dealership model, customers never see this; the paint is corrected before the car goes on the lot. With Tesla, it either means a frustrating delay from their scheduled delivery date/time, or presenting them with a less-than-perfect car which they have to bring back. That said, the reaction to the vehicle, and overall impressions of Tesla, have been extremely positive.

Stop the Moral Panic
Please folks, let's get back to reality. First, it is completely legal in the United States to build your own firearms ( https://www.quora.com/Is-is-tr... )-- anyone with access to basic machinery tools can do it -- think Zip Guns created by prisoners for the ease of creation. Second, plastic 3D gun are terrible.I would rather have a 1700s musket instead. The 3D printed guns have more in common with ancient firearms than modern firearms. It is cheaper and simpler to buy a fully built AR-15 than it is to "print" your own firearm from files downloaded off the internet. And if you really want to make your own M16 based pistol, Google will provide you detailed plans from their own servers: https://patents.google.com/pat.... You provide the tools and skill, Google will provide the detailed schematics. Will Facebook now block Google?

Re:Admirable but...
really? So, what immoral actions do you have on Google? Have they been selling data to ppl, corporations, or even gov. that is tied to individuals? If so, give us a link.
Here you go. Using other people's data is literally how google makes money.
You think that working for a gov is immoral? Ok. How did you get your education, medical bills, (normally) eat safe food, etc?
Nazis had an education system, excellent medical care, fed the populous and much more, for a time. That must mean WindBourne believes being a Nazi is moral.
