Re:And still no Windows sandboxing
Look up New Tab, New Window extension that forces Chrome to open any new tab in new window instead. You'll still have the ugly tabbar above and the window title is therefore not shown fully (limited by tab with), but this can't be helped without changing source, I guess.

Google Uses Ganeti
If you're looking for inexpensive and simple, you should consider Google's Ganeti.
Google uses it pretty heavily in their offices. It's simple to manage (command-line) and has some unique features, like being based on DRBD so it uses local storage and doesn't need anything like a SAN, and reads (but not writes) going as fast as local storage, rather than bottlenecked by the interconnect you're using.
See the interesting hour-long speech about how they're using it, available in MP4 and WebM:
https://www.usenix.org/conference/lisa12/ganeti-your-private-virtualization-cloud-way-google-does-it
Or just the PDF of the slideshow: http://whatexit.org/tal/PICC12/Ganeti-90.pdf

The case against coal...
I've got quite a few friends who are anti-nuclear power and they constantly site Chernobyl, 3-mile Island and Fukushima...
The problem is that they refuse to travel to enjoy the fresh air" in Beijing. I spent 3 weeks there in February, and let me tell you, after about 3 days there my nose was constantly congested. Within about 4 days of returning to the US, it cleared up. That air is not too fresh.
Also on the few days when it is clear there, the Japanese complain because all the smog has blown it's way into Japan.
-
Re:So?
Don't forget that every year the coal industry in the US pumps out more radioactive material than has ever been released from US nuclear power plants, even if you include the 3 mile island minor incident.
Authoritative numbers for radiation release of a coal plant are hard to find, but here's what I found:
Coal plants release 330mCi per billion KWh Around 13MCi of radiation was released from TMI (mostly in the form of "harmless" noble gases.
So to figure out how many KwH of coal production that release was equivalent to:
13 x 10e6 Ci / 330 x 10e-3 Ci * 1 x 10e9 KWh = 3.9 x 10e16 Kwh
Coal plants generate 1
.5 million GWh or 1.5 x 10e6 * 10e9 = 1.5 x 10e15 Wh or 1.5 x 10e12 KWhSo the Three Mile Island release was equivalent to 3.9 x 10e16 Kwh / 1.5 x 10e12 KWh = 26,000 years worth of annual coat plant radiation release.
Most of TMI's radiation release was in the form of nobel gases that were said to be relatively harmless, only 13Ci of cancer causing Iodine-131 was released, so if you look only at the Iodine release, then the numbers are much smaller -- TMI's release was about
.026 years (9.5 days) worth of coal fired power production. -
Re:The Answer To This Nonsense...
What are you, a worthless DEA shill?
"Judging by every metric, decriminalization in Portugal has been a resounding success," says Glenn Greenwald, an attorney, author and fluent Portuguese speaker, who conducted the research. "It has enabled the Portuguese government to manage and control the drug problem far better than virtually every other Western country does."
The Cato paper reports that between 2001 and 2006 in Portugal, rates of lifetime use of any illegal drug among seventh through ninth graders fell from 14.1% to 10.6%; drug use in older teens also declined. Lifetime heroin use among 16-to-18-year-olds fell from 2.5% to 1.8% (although there was a slight increase in marijuana use in that age group). New HIV infections in drug users fell by 17% between 1999 and 2003, and deaths related to heroin and similar drugs were cut by more than half. In addition, the number of people on methadone and buprenorphine treatment for drug addiction rose to 14,877 from 6,040, after decriminalization, and money saved on enforcement allowed for increased funding of drug-free treatment as well.
"There is no doubt that the phenomenon of addiction is in decline in Portugal," said Joao Goulao, President of the Institute of Drugs and Drugs Addiction, a press conference to mark the 10th anniversary of the law.
The number of addicts considered "problematic" -- those who repeatedly use "hard" drugs and intravenous users -- had fallen by half since the early 1990s, when the figure was estimated at around 100,000 people, Goulao said.
Portugal's holistic approach had also led to a "spectacular" reduction in the number of infections among intravenous users and a significant drop in drug-related crimes, he added.

Avoiding tracking has been patented (yes, really)
US Patent 7751826 - Motorola submitted the patent in 2002, it was issued in 2010:
The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) has mandated that, by December 2002, all cellular telephone carriers must market handsets capable of providing an emergency locator service. This emergency locator service, known as E911, will enable personnel at the public safety answering point (PSAP) to pinpoint the location of a cellular telephone user dialing 911. This FCC mandate further requires that the user not be able to override the emergency locator service in the case of a 911 emergency call.
This technology has raised public concern that, in addition to being used for emergency location, the locator service may be used by cellular carriers or by others to track the movements of cell phone users without their consent. There is therefore a need for a system that complies with the FCC mandate for location service while providing maximum privacy protection for cell phone users.
The invention overcoming these and other problems in the art relates in one regard to a system and method for selectively activating or deactivating E911 tracking service, in an embodiment by disabling power to GPS locator circuitry in a cellular telephone until the key sequence "9-1-1-Send" is detected. In one embodiment, the power to the GPS circuitry in a cellular handset may be activated by detection of a keypad sequence and the rotation of a physical switch to permit power delivery. When the handset detects the key sequence "9-1-1" it may output a signal that loads the switch into a "ready" position. When the user presses the "Send" button, the switch closes, enabling power to be delivered to the GPS circuitry. In other embodiments, the selective delivery of power may be controlled by software.
Motorola has been building phones for more than a decade in which the GPS circuitry is physically separated from electrical power until the user does something that causes it to be connected. This obviously doesn't help you if your phone has been hacked or modified and it doesn't help you avoid network triangulation, but it makes you wonder how all these supposed experts know all about the "dangers" of cell phones without having done much research or talking to the people who actually made the phones (you know, the inventors of patents are listed on the patents).

Re:To put this in context
My original point was that supercomputers do things that MapReduce architectures are not designed to do. I'm not sure how half of what you just wrote relates to that point. You seem to be saying that computers are so fast now that we only need one machine. In that case, MapReduce vs supercomputers is irrelevant anyway. Instead of putting what I'm saying in some "context" that is completely irrelevant, why don't you try to understand the original point: MapReduce is not designed for tight coupling. You use MPI or related technologies for that.
You say that finite element has MapReduce implementations. I googled finite element hadoop and the first result was "What is Hadoop not good for". Why don't you link to the map reduce implementation of finite element instead of being so insufferably smug.
You might also try googling linpack hadoop. The first result explains why there is no Hadoop implementation of linpack.

Re:In all fairness with this economy.
I had been looking around too, but found nothing locally. Yes, I did get some "offers" which involved my moving, but the offers looked too tentative to accept unless they would give me a "golden parachute" for my relocation costs in case the job did not work out.
I have about accepted the fact that if I am going to ever work again, I have to create my own job.
The New York Times [NYT site I do not know if accessing direct will invoke a paywall] is running this which is also the only way I see I will ever be productive in society again, as the politicians and powers that be seem determined to tax and fee everyone onto welfare. How the government can even think of taxing the little guy so much while at the same time allowing international tax havens to operate is beyond me. Every dollar the government extracts from the little guy is a dollar taken from the till of a local business. I am seeing way too many failed businesses in my town, as people no longer have the money to buy their offerings. I really miss my pizza parlor. Its now occupied by a firm who prepares income tax, assisting people to comply with all the tax forms, laws and regulations passed by the people they voted into power. -

OK, let us say that you are one of the thousands of "little plastic sticker for you forehead" makers who hawks the "Padmini Bindis, the Best Bindi for your forehead". And you are looking for some kind of free publicity and a brand distinction from all other bindi makers. Wouldn't you be tempted to sue Apple, just for the sake of publicity? Not saying Padmini sandals or Padmini ice cream cones or Padmini costermongers and blood orange purveyors would have a case. But wouldn't they be tempted?

Re:Padmini is a very common Indian name for girls
There must tons and tons of products and registered trademarks around the name Padmini in India. An actress Padmini (no lastname) is the top hit for Padmini in google. I know at least one car model was named Padmini. Every town will have a cafe or a grocery store or a hotel (lodge in local parlance) named Padmini. So I would not be surprised if some one there challenges iPad mini as "too similar to my registered brand name" there. Even if the case has no merit someone might sue just for the publicity or with some hope of reaching a settlement with a multinational company with deep pockets.
Doesn't matter unless a Padmini is making electronics & computers, then it might be a lawsuit.

Circumference is 2*pi*r, or pi*d, and the platters on a 5.25" drive were around 5.1" in diameter, so it should be:
3600rpm * 60 * 24 * 365.25 * 16 * 5.1* pi / 12 / 5280 = 7.66 million miles
But only on the outside of the disk, if the heads were on the inside, maybe around 1" diameter, then it's:
3600rpm * 60 * 24 * 365.25 * 16 * 1* pi / 12 / 5280 = 1.5 million miles
So the heads have ridden over somewhere between 1.5 to 7.66 million miles of platter travel

Installation Information
it was Nintendo that didn't allow open source software to be used with the Wii SDK. Sony could just use PCSX2 without any permission so long as they provided a link to the source code upon request.
PCSX2 is GPLv3. (source). This means Sony would have to ship each copy with Installation Information, or instructions to install one's own modifications on the hardware that shipped with PCSX2. Anybody could use this Installation Information to install homebrew on the platform.

I don't think Google is a "We can too" operation, they've done pushed past the envelope many times.

Those with security concerns like myself log in only when needed then log out when done.

I still haven't got round to reading GPLv3, but in any case you can only dismiss claims to patents you have. The patent clauses in the GPLv3 may stop Google and other companies releasing GPLv3 software, but I'm sure this Google pledge still covers GPLv3 software by anyone that implements anything covered by their pledged patents. If you're unclear as to what licenses this pledge applies then go and read the pledge yourself.

"Of course there are nonsensical elements mixed in with religion and spirituality: that's true for all areas of human life. So a reasonable skeptic has to accept a lot of things are possible and that our knowledge of all the levels of reality is apparently limited as human beings. Still, then there is the issue of what is useful to believe in this current reality as far as dealing with the pains and pleasures and relationships and values and challenges and so on that it presents.

Re:They'll monetize the world's problems...
From 2009-2013, these charts show unemployment rates (as measured by US standards) dropped in the US, Australia, Canada, Germany, and Japan.
Unemployment statistics are particularly misleading, especially in the US, where all of the various measures are flawed in major ways. For example, the numbers you cited are calculated using the US standards. Under this standard, unemployment is measured from the total number of claims for unemployment benefits. This fails to take a large number of scenarios into account, and is not a good measure of true unemployment. It also completely fails to account for underemployment (i.e. someone who gets a part time job, but is not making their full expected wages). In all, a much better indicator (but one which is not tracked), is the total employed hours vs the available man hours available in the market. By this measure, the best guess approximation has the United States running Close to 20% This is a massive labor oversupply. In that same time frame, we barely see an interruption in GDP growth. This means that all of that reduction in employment did not affect GDP significantly, and therefore is unlikely to ever recover. The point of the matter is that the growth in GDP is due to increases in efficiency from the very causes I cited, and as the theory predicts, this is causing an oversupply of labor that cannot be corrected for in the long term.
The number of poor people (living on under $1.25 per day 2005 price level) declined pretty much everywhere [economist.com] from 2005 to 2008. China has taken 660 million people out of poverty since 1981. Even in Africa, from 2005 to 2008, poverty fell by 12 million to 47% - the first time less than half of Africans have been below the poverty line.
Large parts of the world are still either pre-industrial, or very early in the industrialization process. That means that they will not see the effects of this process for another couple of generations. They will see it earlier when/if the cost point of complete automation decreases significantly below the cost of the cheapest manual labor in the world. When that happens, then all of the delaying factors that have been sustaining our market economy will collapse in a depression to end all depressions. 5% of the worlds population will be employed, and the rest will starve to death. The necessary result will be revolution and civil war. This can still be fixed now, if we recognize the problem for what it is and work towards a solution. Marx caught a glimpse of the problem, but failed to see the whole problem, and tried a solution that was premature, and hopelessly naive. Since that time, I have heard of nothing better.

Bowie bonds?
The first thing that came to mind when I read the title was when David Bowie sold bonds, based on future royalties. He took that one time payment to buy some of his discography back. Not bad for him.
But... James Brown tried the same thing, and it ended not as well. There were lawsuits about what the value should have been. This is now literally a textbook case of how hard an oddball bond valuation is. It went all the way to the NY Supreme Court (posthumously, for Brown).
Back to this case... valuation will be very difficult. Did he get value for the amount of control he gave up? His health suffered (the sleep experiment) he lost control of his life (control, or the perception of control is very important to the psyche). Was it worth it, outside of being a neat experiment?

Re:Copper prices
Fiber has a kevlar sheating which should worth something.
Why? It's not like you can use it for anything. Kevlar needs to be purpose made for specific uses. You can't melt it down and reuse it like metal. You can buy sheets of Kevlar fabric for very little. It's mostly the labor and skill that it takes to make stuff that adds the value. Not the material itself.

Re:Why wouldn't animals be communicating?
I don't know that science has difficulty with it. It's pretty accepted that other animals and plants can communicate is some fashion. It's just depends on how language is defined. Dogs can communicate by peeing on trees, is that a language? If a plant emits a foul odor when threatened and that chemical triggers the release of more in nearby plants to drive the herbivore away is that a language? Does communication==language or is language a specific subset of communication?

Waggle dance
It occurred to me initially, that if the effect is only really noticeable after flight then the only information that they could usefully communicate by this method would be how recently they had completed a flight. It then occurred to me that bees perform a waggle dance which is believed to instruct other bees in the hive where to find food sources. The electrostatic effect on the antenna would be most effective at this time, and also seems to solve one of my issues with the waggle dance theory, which is that it seems most effective as a visual form of communication when viewed from above, which of course the bees do not do.The electrostatic explanation would work, as the dance could manipulate the antennea in the manner of an operator inputting directions using a joystick.

Re:what about transuranics?
The isolated genes do not exist in nature, and never have. "Products of nature" is not read so broadly as to include any combination of hydrogen, carbon, or other elements, regardless of what isolation or manipulation you perform on them, or no machine would ever be patentable either, by definition.
Using this logic, wouldn't trans-uranic elements also be patentable, since they are all unstable and thus not found in nature? To my knowledge, nobody has ever suggested these elements could possibly be patented, but I don't see why not, given the similarity of the circumstances.
Uh, about that... Element 95.

Some ideas by me useful towards space security
From 2011: http://it.slashdot.org/comments.pl?sid=2368162&threshold=0&commentsort=0&mode=thread&cid=37016386
"Twirlip: Towards a 21st Century Worldwide Public Intelligence Desktop Platform for Collaborative Sensemaking, Analysis, Risk Assessment, and Horizon Scanning"Around them, I also put together another proposal to collect and organize stories about security issues as a modernized "Risks Digest" using software like my wife desiged my wife wrote called "Rakontu":
http://www.rakontu.org/Another spin on that from this month:
https://www.newschallenge.org/open/open-government/submission/civic-sensemaking-by-working-with-stories-using-rakontu/With some more code links and a video here:
http://twirlip.com/From 1999 to NASA, some ideas about rethinking our manufacturing infrastructure systematically and in an open source way:
http://www.kurtz-fernhout.com/oscomak/And also to DARPA in 1999:
"DARPA Progam Manager Position on Self-Replicating technology"
https://groups.google.com/forum/?hl=en&fromgroups=#!msg/virgle/feS-LaqnFyM/z0sqkvvCx2QJ
"We of course need to minimize military tensions around the world through arms control, international aid, and setting a good example. This delays the culmination of these other trend to war, but in my opinion will not prevent them because of ever-present potential for a small group of unstable people to use weapons of mass destruction. ... I also don't think we have a significant choice. Such self-replicating and self-repairing systems will be developed eventually anyway, if only from commercial competitive pressures. The only thing we can do is slow down their development. Yet that has its own risks of our current infrastructure being overwhelmed by current weapons of mass destruction or sophisticated terrorism. Also, should such self-replicating technology be developed first clandestinely by an oppressive regime, the consequences for the United States could be disastrous."From 1987 for grad studies on improving security via self-replicating space habitats:
http://www.pdfernhout.net/princeton-graduate-school-plans.htmlA long string of failed proposals.
:-)Well, at least I can still try to promote great ideas by others that have met with more success:
:-)
"A Conceptual Framework for System Fault Tolerance"
http://hissa.nist.gov/chissa/SEI_Framework/framework_1.htmlAnd I can keep on working towards those other ideas as very limited spare time permits.
I guess I am mostly just a creation of 1960s-1970s TV about our future in space -- to keep banging my head against the wall of space and security for decades?
:-) Star Trek, The Starlost, Space 1999, Silent Running, Battlestar Galactica, Buck Rogers, Lost In Space, Thunderbirds, and so on... And way too many sci-fi novels. :-) -

Spam = Cyber Terrorism?
I thought I read recently that Cyber-terrorism is considered a form of terrorism, and if Spam is treated in the same manner as cyber terrorism, especially if DDoS attacks are performed from that location then would a government's military be able to get involved?
I'm not saying I want to see this happen, but if a full military force could go against it, would it really stand a chance of being defended? It makes you wonder.
Or someone could dig a very large hole beneath it creating a natural sink hole.... http://www.google.com/imgres?imgurl=http://www.dvhardware.net/news/guatemala_sink_hole_2.jpg&imgrefurl=http://webecoist.momtastic.com/2008/08/26/incredible-strange-amazing-sinkholes/&h=467&w=700&sz=105&tbnid=PCoM9HT226yehM:&tbnh=90&tbnw=135&zoom=1&usg=__Nb9ueAfpTFc2czI2dZcOo3m81jk=&docid=7T6qkihRxLSqSM&hl=en&sa=X&ei=_CZTUczlBIiotAaq5YHYDw&sqi=2&ved=0CDIQ9QEwAA&dur=774
