If that's your idea of a "freefall", sign me up. Take a look at Nokia or RIM if you want to see what a real stock freefall looks like.

Re:320GB hard drive
A subset of the full features are supported offline. I don't know if the 320GB is actually anywhere near filled in common usage scenarios, or whether that's just the sweet spot for spinny disks these days; but going offline doesn't brick the thing.

Re:It's a sad sign of the times
Or it could be we don't like breathing and drinking that crap. I suppose we could come around if the oil companies paid the medical bills, and for the clean up, instead of just passing the costs onto the consumers.
Then make them clean up their crap. No one is implying otherwise. But before you assume that all oil producers leave behind a mess, I suggest you drive from Detroit MI to Traverse City MI and look at all the oil wells pumping oil directly in the middle of a farmed field. The plants there seem to be doing just fine, btw.
Oh, and ALL costs are passed along to consumers. Overhead, taxes, EVERYTHING is eventually passed down to consumers.

Re:What's a poppy?
How about burning a yellow ribbon? anyone ever get arrested for that in the USA? (answer, yes (first result))
They didn't get arrested for burning a yellow ribbon. They got arrested for lighting something on fire and throwing it on stage. They were charged with arson and assault.
Its pretty stupid to light something on fire, then THROW IT at other people. -
they need the PR quickly, check the news
because they just got ripped by the UK gov, their name is mud right now (its bad in *every* UK paper) and there are serious questions to be asked about their tax avoidance.
Next up the SEC are going to be looking hard at them in the next few months (the UK gov tore them apart about their SEC filings) so they need as many friends as they can get.https://www.google.com/search?hl=en&gl=uk&tbm=nws&q=amazon+tax+avoidance

Re:This is known as
So when you say "digital copy" you don't mean an actual digital copy, you mean a brand name thing that Blu-ray does. I suppose I should have guessed that since "digital copy" would apply to basically every thing a computer ever does and is a stupid term (as the movie on the Blu-ray disc is digital in the first place), but, in any case: pocket BLU
That took all of one second of Google to find. And then a bit more to determine that, yes, that's the official way to play supported "digital copy" Blu-ray discs on your Android device.

Uh?
Besides their own branded tablets, have you checked which is the manufacturer of the Nexus 10 monster (2560x1600 screen, 16Gb at 400$) that comes out tomorrow? -
Re:What's a poppy?
They seem to have been arrested...and sentenced for arson.
Neither the arrest or the sentence are about or limit free speech. It does limit your ability to throw flaming objects at people though.

Re:What's a poppy?
Burning the poppy is probably equivalent of the Westboro baptists "Thank God for dead soldiers" posters in terms of disrespect, upset to service family members, etc
How about burning a yellow ribbon? anyone ever get arrested for that in the USA? (answer, yes (first result))
I don't believe they were arrested for burning the yellow ribbon, I believe they were arrested for chucking a burning object at a stage. If they had burned it safely, I don't think there would have been any issue. And by burn it safely, I don't mean burn it in a crowd of people either.

How was this ever granted?
The patent was actually filed in 1992. It describes a very poor stream cipher. SSL seems to "infringe" the generic stream cipher parts of the patent. However, since stream ciphers pre-date the patent (e.g. A5/1 from 1987 also used pseudo-random numbers) it's really not clear that the patent should ever have been granted.

Re:And for all of us who prefer RPN?
The HP-48 emulator for Android is Droid48. It just got updated with some new skins which I guess are supposed to look better on high-res devices, but look pretty bad on mine. The older skins looked just like my old HP-48S (RIP), so I hope the developer at least gives us the option to use the old skins.

Re:Google Groups?
+1 for Google Groups, it removes A LOT of the hassle of managing forum for a site, especially for spam management (spam prevention logic is global across all the forums they host, if someone is detected spamming in one forum it can be nuked from everywhere at once).
I use it quite successfully for a few sites.Google even allows EMBEDDING the page via an iframe, with an url that will not load the usual Google Groups page header:
use this in iframe src:
hxxps://groups.google.com/forum/embed/?place=___INSERT_FORUM_PATH_HERE___?showsearch=true&showpopout=true&hl=___INSERT_THE_UI_LANGUAGE_CODE_HERE__&parenturl=___INSERT_HERE_THE_URL_OF_THE_PARENT_LOADING_PAGE
(replace hxxps with https)

Re:Are you an engineer?
I don't think I could really call myself a computer scientist with a straight face, yet that is my degree.
What's funny is that "Computer Scientist" is my official job title. I'm a GS-1550 in the US Government.

Re:Ubuntu and classic mode
Oddly, a simple google search returned this on the first page which says (in part): "Go to System Settings -> Keyboard -> Shortcuts, click on "Launch Terminal". Assign a shortcut (e.g. Ctrl+Alt+T). And that's it.".
Sir, I think you should turn in your geek card.

I'm okay with PETA. Yes, they are mildly annoying, but they more than make up for it in sheer amusement and very compelling PSA pictures.

Re:Required for the RMAH.
You do not need the keyfob. You need an AUTHENTICATOR. And that can be had for free (on your phone) or even as a free application on your PC : http://code.google.com/p/winbma/
So the extra cost to get the needed authenticator is exactly $0.

Re:What the fuck
I have no need for VM, but I think the opinion of those using it, in many different settings, is much more valuable that any wiki entry or manual.
His post is spot on. The question isn't profound and has been asked and answered many times over the years. There is more to the internet than wiki entries and manuals. Most of these software packages have forums and guides specifically about setting up, configuring, and using these packages. Failing that there are oodles of video tutorials on sites like Youtube and Vimeo. To top it off basic questions about "Recommented free VM software" have been asked (and answered). If you have technical questions those are best found where users of the software congregate, if you can't fathom where that would be, first try the vendors website.
Perhaps your time would have better spent giving us some information instead of a rant?
So your solution is to rant about a rant? Maybe you can make an ask slashdot question about this very topic!

Re:Translation:
He's got a point though. The dealers act like a union. By aggregating the purchasing power of multiple car buyers, they can negotiate for better pricing from the big corporate manufacturer than if everyone bought from them as individuals.
What's getting you upset is that the dealer-union, instead of passing on the same better price to everyone, plays a negotiating game and rewards those who are better at it with a better price. It's like haggling in moira. A lot of players hated having to haggle in the store to get the best price on loot they got from the dungeon. They requested over and over for a flag to turn it off. One of the developers answered, "There is no need for a flag. If you don't like haggling, then simply don't haggle. Accept the first price the store offers you."
That succinctly revealed that the problem wasn't the haggling itself. The problem was knowing that you weren't getting the best price if you didn't haggle. Likewise, if a manufacturer has no-haggle pricing, then everyone pays the same price. By preventing others from getting a lower price via haggling with a dealer, you create for yourself the artificial peace of mind of knowing that you got the "best" price. Even if that "best" price is significantly higher than what you could have gotten if there were dealers you could haggle with. -

This is extra text because Slashdot is lame and says my comment has too few characters per line:
A computer program (also software, or just a program) is a sequence of instructions written to perform a specified task with a computer.[1] A computer requires programs to function, typically executing the program's instructions in a central processor.[2] The program has an executable form that the computer can use directly to execute the instructions. The same program in its human-readable source code form, from which executable programs are derived (e.g., compiled), enables a programmer to study and develop its algorithms.
Computer source code is often written by computer programmers. Source code is written in a programming language that usually follows one of two main paradigms: imperative or declarative programming. Source code may be converted into an executable file (sometimes called an executable program or a binary) by a compiler and later executed by a central processing unit. Alternatively, computer programs may be executed with the aid of an interpreter, or may be embedded directly into hardware.
Computer programs may be categorized along functional lines: system software and application software. Two or more computer programs may run simultaneously on one computer, a process known as multitasking. -

I dont know about the reporting, I know that for example 16% of worlds biomass co-burning plants are in Poland. Its no brainer if you practically get refunded FULL cost of making energy from EU grands.

Virtualbox is my favorite for beginners and above
My favorite is VirtualBox, especially for a beginner. Runs pretty quick overall, has decent options, and seems to support a lot of hardware with a fair amount of configuration options available, but not required. Another great feature is that it runs on Windows and Linux hosts with the same UI, so you won't have to make any transitions there. I've also seen a web UI if you need to run it in a headless environment. I haven't tried it yet, but you can check out at http://code.google.com/p/phpvirtualbox/ There's also some headless and cli features available, so you can script more things that way as well. We currently use a dedicated host machine with 4-6 VMs running at any time without any issues so far.

Re:Statistics
It's a little obvious, don't you think? If you described the problem to someone involved in the field, they couldn't come up with this?
That's like saying "he's a little guilty, don't you think? I mean, look at him, isn't he guilty looking?"
Obviousness is a legal conclusion that must be supported by evidence - currently, you have no evidence that it's the right conclusion, just a gut feeling that's based on hindsight. To show something is obvious, you need to show that one or more pieces of prior art that existed at the time of filing, alone or in combination, teach or suggest each and every element in the claims. So, for example, the claim quoted above includes "receiving at a first server system" - that's easy... here's a patent from 1995 that shows a server system receiving information. It then says "information related to users of a social network site hosted on a second server system". That's easy, too - we can go back to the original Myspace or Facebook pages. So now, in combination, we've got the entire first line.
Then keep going. If you can do that for everything in the claim, you can prove it's obvious, rather than just alleging it.

Re:Exploitation, unions, and you.Way to totally ignore any negative experience regarding unions...at all. They're the reason our jobs left. I know a fellow here in China from Carolina doing furniture manufacturing. His company told the unions that the price had to come down, they were getting killed by competition from overseas. Union wouldn't budge one inch. Guess what happened? Closed down the factory and moved it lock, stock, and barrel to China. Surprise! Reality.
Let's also totally ignore the union thugs who came out to bust Cesar Chavez and his workers. Let's ignore the unions that refused help after the hurricane because keeping their own power was more important. Let's ignore the fact that in some states, you can't even work without being forced to join a union. Let's ignore all the union bosses in prison (I didn't even bother to cite specific links as Google is continually populated with new stories on the topic). Let's ignore the racism and sexism of the white male union rank-and-file.
I can't help but notice all the union achievements you list are 50 years old. Once upon a time, there were genuine problems that unions solved. That time has passed.

Re:Good for him
While the possibility of that is certainly true, it is false for this recent presidential election. Not all districts have reported in, but the most recent numbers show that Obama is ahead in the popular vote by a hair under 2.9 million votes.

Re:Why is the comparision made against the iPhone
Actually, we have some pretty interesting apps. Have you tried Torque Pro?
How about swype and swiftkey ? The best soft keyboards ever.
And none of them are available on iphones or ipads because of Apple's stupid policy.
Writing a message with Apple's keyboard is a pain in the ass, let alone for writing much longer documents while on the go. Swype and swiftkey make it a breeze. Especially swype. Once you swype you're never going back to a traditional soft keyboard tapping key after key. -
