    P.S.=> For a SINGLE 'standalone' non-networked PC (no home network/LAN but TCP/IP connected online) turn off Server & Workstation services.

    That shuts off any "handles" (port 445) this thing propogates thru + turn off NetBIOS over TCP/IP in your internet connection & uncheck/disable Client for Microsoft Networks + File and Print Sharing. Port 139 & 445 always pop up issues over time. It also makes your packet trains smaller (no encapsulation of LanMan)

    Does someone at Slashdot want to be the Next Huffington Post?

    There might be some truth to this.

    Both Alexa and Google Trends show very discouraging downward trends.

    Those just quantitatively reinforce the widely held belief that Slashdot of today is much worse off than the Slashdot of a decade ago, which itself was just a small shadow of its former glory. The disastrous Slashdot Beta episode really didn't help the situation.

    So I wouldn't be surprised if we're seeing the Slashdot editors trying to jump onto the leftist bandwagon, trying to imitate the success that other leftist media venues have had.

    Of course, the saddest thing about this is that the pendulum has already started swinging back to the right! People are utterly fed up with leftism. That's why the Republicans are seeing so much support in the US, not just at the federal level, but at all levels of government. That's why Brexit is going ahead.

    The majority of people don't want to be subjected to more leftist nonsense about affirmative action, about transsexuals, about -isms and -phobias, and about so-called "social justice" in general. They don't want to be subjected to virtue signalling. They don't want to read comment after comment full of pathetic insults like "Drumpf" and "orange skin" and "small hands" and "bad hair".

    So if there is some concerted effort to push leftism here, it will likely backfire, and just reinforce the downward trends this site is already apparently experiencing. It looks like Slashdot may be jumping onto the same leftist bandwagon that all sane people are currently jumping off of, if they were dumb enough to have ended up on it in the first place!

    If Slashdot is heading to the left, then it is just looking for more of the same decline it has been experiencing for so long. If Slashdot wants success, it will need to reorient itself to head to the right. That is where the future is.

    Both the Florida blooms and I do have information from the department of natural resources stating that nitrogen and phosphorus are to blame for that particular lake (omitted for anonymity) but the DNR is actively managing both to stop algae growth in streams and lakes statewide. But facts probably don't interest you and you seem the type to think man made CO2 emissions don't matter along with the rest of the pollution spilling into the environment.

    Voiceprinting technologies have been around for quite a while, with efforts visible in the news in the 1960s (spectrograms, etc.) and possibly earlier (I'm too lazy to continue searching, sorry); however. in the late 70s, people started coming out against it as being not particularly useful (visual analysis of spectrograms seems quite fallible). Technology to support it has improved greatly since then. It does have its potential for abuses, just like everything else, but I have not heard of anything particularly terrible in recent history. This doesn't mean it doesn't/can't happen, and your concerns are not unfounded.

    GP isn't American so I assume his exposure to US news and internal events are limited. That doesn't change the fact. Just a quick google search shows as much.

    Some sources: USAToday, CNN, Slate, NYTimes, Democracy Now, the Atlantic, NPR, Seattle Times, and Vanity Fair all on the first page and all the time of the inauguration.

    Honestly, the claim GP makes is specious at best because every anti-Trump protest has been widely reported on. I hear about each one everytime on NPR at the very least the same day or next day (sometimes before or all the listed). Just today, protests about the trans ban in the military is being reported on widely and extensively. It's hard not to hear about those protests any time they occur because #resisttrump. Maybe now they are not being as extensive because they are so common it's nearly routine.

    How do you quantify that those events aren't being reported on?

    The really advanced designs were on DEC Alpha chips, whose patents are now held, I believe, by HP.

    Apple, IBM, and Motorola did some pretty significant branch prediction work on PowerPC, too, e.g. US5659752. I'm not saying that any of their patents are necessarily prior art, but some of them probably are. IBM, in particular, filed a *lot* of patents.

    It's not that difficult. You pay more for the cable intended to be used as the power line cable, and you buy said cable from a respected vendor. Every USB C to USB C cable is at least USB 3.1.

    Google even sells one, it's a little expensive at $20, but they also sell an universal USB-C charger for $60 that can be used for everything from a Mac, PC, or Chromebook all the way down to a phone.

    That is a feature (or is it a bug?) that is easily disabled. One could argue that it ought to be turned off by default, rather than turned on. I've had it off for years. Considering that turning WiFi on an off is one swipe and tap away in most circumstances, it is trivial for me (or anyone else) to fall back on cellular data when the WiFi is crappy.

    I'll ask the audience: is there anyone who feels that WiFi Assist is a useful feature?
