Re:Non-habitable-planet colonies need not apply
Ehm... Growing food is not a problem, but getting enough oxygen from plants is.
- For oxygen you either need plants OR water + electricity. Water exists on mars ( https://www.nasa.gov/press-rel... ) and solar power would be perfect on mars ( https://www.universetoday.com/... ) or possibly bring one or more small nuclear-reactors there (or parts to build together with resources available on site)
- For food, grow plants and/or algae. Would be able to support quite a few people with minimal resources.
- To expand the habitat, dig tunnels beneath the ground. The above would be the most important things needed.. Things breaking down can be repaired if not too complex. Even easier if they were designed to be repairable from the start.
What would be missing is the production of modern tech, but give it enough time, and enough kick-starting equipment, and those things too can made there. Heck some quite advanced things can be made at home today like integrated circuits ( https://code.google.com/archiv... )
Some of the problems with living there would be:
- Getting there over and over, for a sensible amount of money, in a reliable manner to allow us to kickstart a colony..
- If you go there would you ever expect to come back to earth?
- If you are seriously injured there you may die, or become a too big drain on the available resources. (during the kickstart phase)
- Don't think you will ever be able to retire if you live there except when you are too weak/accident-prone to work.
- How to handle people when they get old and need care.. Not too many resources to go around.. Probably need a population above 1000 and 60-70% of the population working to be able to take care of kids and elderly. -

FLASHBACK 1993: Hercules and The quick brown fox
My boss slaps a folded-over InfoWorld magazine onto my desk, thick enough to kill a rat with in those days. He says with obvious glee, "How bout dem apples?" It is Steve Gibson's INFOWORLD column of March 8 and Gibson (with obvious glee) has caught a manufacturer of Hercules graphics cards red-handed. The standard WinBench program had conducted a series of tests --- and in one particular test of text display, in which the phrase "The quick brown fox jumped over the lazy dog's back then sat on a tack" is continuously painted on the screen --- the card performed oddly spectacularly. It was that one score that when combined with the others, ranked the card above the competition. Suspicious, Gibson changed a single letter in the test phrase and the card's score dropped to a reasonable range. The card was apparently recognizing that a test was in progress and 'cheating' by failing to actually over-write this static text repeatedly.
I love the comment by the manufacturer when Gibson contacted them (read it!) but what intrigued the industry the most was that the cheat was not to be found in the Windows driver code, it had been embedded into the firmware of the accelerator chip. In the next Winbench version the test phrase jumped around the lazy screen's back during the test, rendering the cheat obsolete.
Has anyone done an energy study to estimate how much energy is consumed by EU "market surveillance authorities" and even the EU apparatus itself? Perhaps if we recognize the EU as a special case and stub the whole thing out with a rubber stamp, people will be able to watch HD television and toast four slices of bread at once and with former EU personnel in the workplace everyone will be able to work one less day a week with same pay.

Adding antivirus gives malware writers an even larger surface to attack. All the major antivirus vendors have had vulnerabilities, some of them extremely serious. Furthermore, they don't protect against new threats.

Re:HEVC and HEIF
Why single out Apple?
Because Microsoft, Google, and Mozilla have joined. Apple is the last major browser maker who hasn't.
VP6-VP8 adoption stand at an effective Level of Zero
VP6 and VP7 were used by Flash and by Skype, VP8 is mandatory to implement on Android and is used in video calls, and VP8 is used in WebRTC.
-
Re:HEVC and HEIF
HEVC is out now
VP9 is out now and has broader use than HEVC.
as well as software players like Microsoft and Apple
Microsoft supports VP9 in Edge.
VP9 has virtually zero mindshare outside the Googleplex
Netflix uses VP9. Wikipedia uses VP9. And, of course, even though it's inside the Googleplex it's difficult to ignore that YouTube uses VP9. YouTube no longer offers 4K video to Safari by default due to Safari's lack of VP9 support.
set top boxes, etc. that support VP9
Roku has VP9 support, Chromecast Ultra has VP9 support, Android phones have VP9 support, etc, etc.
AV1, on the other hand, looks very compelling... it actually has broad industry support, from big players like Microsoft, Cisco, Netflix, Google, all the way down to silicon makers like Broadcom, Xilinx, RealTek, ARM, AMD, and NVIDIA.
Right. Just like VP9. When will Apple add VP9 support?
It's disingenuous to complain that Apple isn't going to include AV1 when it isn't - and won't be - ready before High Sierra.
Show me where I complained that AV1 won't be in High Sierra. Quote me. Maybe re-read what I wrote.
In the meantime, let's acknowledge that Apple hasn't joined the Alliance for Open Media. When will Apple join?

Re:The iPhone does miss such a button
The app drawer in Android is part of the launcher, which can be replaced by the user. Different launchers have different behavior, including how they decide to sort apps in the app drawer.
The Google Now Launcher is the default on stock Android devices, with the Pixel Launcher being installed by default on the Pixel line of phones. Plenty of non-Google alternative launchers exist, including Nova Launcher, ZenUI Launcher (by ASUS), and even Arrow Launcher, made by Microsoft.
No WONDER no one knows how to navigate in Android! It's nothing more than an inconsistent clusterfuck!

Re:Real, but
Here's a pro tip: look up the result in other sources using google, find a more useful source that tells you things like the name of the journal the research was published in.
In this case it was Nature Climate Change, a relatively new offshoot of the prestigious journal Nature. Nature Climate Change was established in 2011, but by last year ut gad achieved an impact factor of over 19, making it the most cited journal in its field. This doesn't mean it's infallible, but it means it doesn't have to scrape the bottom of the research barrel to fill its pages. This paper may be right or it may be wrong, but it's pretty much guaranteed not to be garbage.
Knowing the journal name makes it trivial to find the original paper, or at least the abstract.
Still it is never possible to know the significance of a paper or a study in the short term. You have to wait until it is cited in a review paper, which will summarize all the supporting and conflicting results that followed any particular piece of research. You should never make a life decision (change what you eat) or policy decision based on any single paper until it has been cited and characterized as sound in a review paper published in a high impact factor journal.

Misusing Campaign Funds is a Felony
Then you would have thousands of people filing for every elective office, just to get the free cash. Or will the cash only go to "established parties"?
You aren't very bright, are you?
The laws on campaign spending are very strict. There is no "free cash."
People regularly go to jail for misusing campaign funds. -
The Koch Caucus
The Koch Brothers opposed Donald Trump and opposed Obama. Their track record of buying election isn't so good.
Hello? McFly? You do know that that presidential election isn't the only election in the country, right?
The Koch bros have been fantastically successful at buying elections. They were the driving force behind the state-level turn over of political offices to the republican party. They've also been so succesful at buying elections in congress that there is a 40 member "koch caucus."
PS its weird you capitalized the "B" in brothers. What's that about?

But you don't actually have to, right?
I think that is right. I can bypass the nag, but it's still a nag on every web log-in.
I log in via IMAPS practically all the time, so I don't see the nag often.
Actually, I just tried logging in via HTTP and I got a "please fill in your backup e-mail or phone number" screen which I could not exit since I hadn't JS enabled, but I opened https://mail.google.com/ via the location bar and there I was, logged in.
(I also learnt that my backup e-mail address was on a provider that shut down a decade ago...)
What I don't know is, whether I am allowed to register a new GMail account without providing a phone number. I think it was bypassable the last time I did it (but hidden pretty well). I haven't tried in a while.
Sorry for the rambling.

It's not a business maneuver. It's Microsoft bribery.
Most of their problems were bureaucratic BS not technical issues.
The people of Munich need to tell MS to GTFO. If for nothing else but bribing public officials, and attempting to extort money from the taxpayers.
This latest story in the rounds on

CNN: horray for honesty
Here is an interesting commentary from Forbes about how to find non-fake journalism. The number one item in his list of criteria for how to tell whether a site is legitimate news source: "If a reporter gets facts in a story wrong, will the news outlet investigate a complaint and publish a correction?"
After youtube played the clip you posted, the very next clip loaded was the apology from CNN and the correction. A google search for "Carol Costello Apologizes On Air for CNN Lying About Milwaukee Riot Situation" gives me 95,200 hits.
So, to the contrary. I will cite this next time I am asked for an example of how CNN is NOT fake news.

Soap box, ballot box, ammo box, jury box, McNugget box, beat box, lunch box, black box, P.O. Box, Suggestion Box, Safe deposit box, Letter Box, Sand Box, Sky box, check box... Wait, what were talking about again?
You should have used bento box in place of McNugget box. They are way better.

Re:If I switch, I figure it will be to a Pixel/Nex
If you're not talking about Android or iOS, then I don't know what the fuck you _are_ talking about... Chrome ships with Chromecast streaming built in and has for a dreadfully long time.
Let's say I use Chrome to cast stuff from my Linux laptop. Works great. But then let's say I change the wifi password on my wifi router, or let's say I move and I get a new wifi network from a new ISP. In the past, all I had to do was to use Chrome to reconfigure the device; now i can't. I have to go find an Android or IOS device, and install Google Home.

It wasn't always like that. I'm a bit of a roadwarrior and I've frequently reconfigured ChromeCast from Chrome in the past. Now I can't, and I get absolutely no added value from using Google Home except to do what I used to do in Chrome.
