Re:What is this?
The spec page lists the ARM940T as a "video coprocessor", so in a way it is a GPU. It might not have very high performance compared to a real GPU, but it uses very little power. And it can probably be used for other things as well. Sound perhaps.
And the MMU-less uClinux looks to be doing well, with the uCsimm and uCdimm devices. I agree there's not much point in having an MMU and modern multi-user OS in a gaming platform that's only going to be running one thing at a time. But the hardware is becoming ever more capable and the OS features are certainly very nice, saving development time. So why not use an OS like Linux?

Re:Wait for it.
i feel the same way, but maybe its my atari 2600/oric-1 heritage
.. i'm only going to get consoles that let me make my own games on them, as well, and not just act as a push-/publishing platform for fat rich media execs.
like this one, for example...
i hope there will be others. xbox/ps3 boxen might be 'sexy hardware', but its crap to only be able to run games that other people 'allow' you to run .. or write. or not. -
Far from it
The preferred device for handheld emulation will be GPX2. GPX2 is the sequel to the former gamepark device.

Thank you all. Anna Hong" -
Things aren't that simple...
Gamepark actually encourages people to make homebrew apps, unlike other manufacturers.
You might want to be a little careful of this statement... You see, the company that you knew as Gamepark that made the original GP32 has since split up into two companies: "Gamepark Holdings" is the company that is working on the GP2X (Or GPX2, as some references call it... there was a contest to decide on a name, so there is some ambiguity). However the other company, known simply as "Gamepark" is working on a completely different handheld system called the XGP. From what I've heard, the XGP is likely going to be quite a bit powerful, with hardware 3D accelleration (basically a Korean PSP)... however, everything I've heard about it indicates that the XGP will NOT be an open platform in the way the GPX2 is striving to be.
So in other words, "Gamepark Holdings" is encouraging the homebrew community... "Gamepark" is not. At least, not yet. -
official website???
:-O
That's not the official GP2X website. That's the GBAX website, an online GP2X distributor. Hardcore-gamer is the distributor on spain.
Here is a list of official distributors.
The official website is still www.gpx2.com
The console will be released in october/november -
Re:Lame video
http://www.gpx2.com/product/product.asp is the offical site for gamepark holdings. GPX2 was the development name till they changed it.
http://www.gpx2.com/pds/pds.asp more videos here although they are HUGE in terms of filesize even though they only last a few minutes.
At the moment a lot of the GP32 developers have hands on devkits and sdks already -

New GP32 with Linux
Quite frankly, I think I'd prefer the new GPX2 over either of them. It's the successor to the superb GP32, and plays Xvid, Divx Ogg (and others), out of the box, has 128Mb and an SD slot, USB2, 8 hours of battery time for video playback (2xAA batteries), runs Linux, and actually has emulators (MAME etc.) on the feature list!
They highly encourage homebrew software.

I usually like white gadgets but...
I always tought he GPX2 looked A LOT uglier than it's predecessor (The GP32), but I changed my mind after I saw a picture of the black version.

Here's it's replacement
This is very sad.
If you're looking for a replacement, the closest you're probably going to find is the GPX2, which is being made by the makers of the GP32. It runs linux and has an incomplete but pretty decent sized fraction of the Zodiac's feature list. They claim they want to sell it for $100, but it seems almost ridiculously improbable they could pull that off.. -
Re:It really is quite fun
Incorrect. The PSP is $100 more than the DS, as of July 28th, 2005.
According to ebgames.com....
Nintendo DS is $149, including a demo of Metroid Prime: Hunters
PSP is $249, including a 32mb Memory Stick Duo, and a set of headphones
Also, if you would have bought a DS last month, you would have gotten a copy of Super Mario 64 DS for free, further lowering the effective cost into a range where it would, in fact, cost less than half of a PSP.
Personally, I plan on picking up a DS and one of the new GPX2s for my portable emulation fix. I have yet to see any games even be announced which would compell me to purchase a PSP.
