I made this same search a few months back; wound up buying some Panasonic `Panaflo' 80mm fans, model L1A. They're at least an order of magnitude quieter than the ones that came with my case but move about 1/3 less air. I fixed that by removing two and installing three. :-)

A little seen nugget at The Enterprise Mission begins "Occasionally, something comes across our desks that is so obvious, so undeniable, so conspiratorial, that we just can't help but rub our critics noses in it."

This article links the current NEAR mssion to a View-Master reel from the 1950's. In a nutshell (it goes way deeper) there is a building on Eros, known about for decades, and they are going to check it out!

NEAR has taken a pic of the building already (spot it here) and if you compare it to the reel, you'll be spouting "Yikes" all day.

Well I don't write C++ code daily. Or ever if I can help it. But the last rating I saw said that code that used the STL was almost twice as large and almost twice as slow as code that did the same thing more directly. This can easily be an unacceptable penalty.

Old benchmarks, perhaps? Some tests show that using standard library template classes (not the same thing as the STL, which is a specific implementation) instead of C idioms is a win in some places and a loss in others.

5. Old maps show almost the exact shape of antarctica. But antarctica is covered with ice and we only know the shape of antarctica because of radar and other hi-tech stuff. So how did they do that? Here's a link to information on the famous "Piri Reese Map" which showed Anarctica's true land-mass. The map was supposedly compiled from other maps he collected during his worldy travels -- some of which supposedly dated back to the LIbrary of Alexandria.

You might want to try some of these:

Seriously though, have a thorough read through the Banner Ad Software Sellers sites to see how these companies' software works. From there, reverse eng a business model that you think is fair AND makes money for the banner-ad company, and then chose a firm who matches that business model.

Having taken a quick look at your site, you might also want to think of other ideas based on your rather specialised audience, like getting a CD shop interested maybe, with weekly specials?

Yeah.. Apparently that post was overrated.. That seems like balanced moderation to me.

I'll say it again -I find the Bungie Liberation Page funny and a great way for people within to let their gripes be known.. I work with a guy who left softimage just after MS bought them up.. Sounds like not good folks to work for. Good to hear people from within speaking out.

I wouldn't call the S2000 a trade-off between performance and technology. Nor the Accord Type-R. (though I'd prefer them to slide a bit more ;-). Ever been in one of those?

The latter was once compared to a Porsche 911 (Carrera I think, but some 911 for sure) in terms of performance. Try driving the LUPO (or any VW to that respect) at 9000 rpm (which those Hondas can) and NASA will be on the phone to you to take your pistons out of orbit. B-]

I agree: they've got some of the finest engineers in there. But, furthermore, they also build some of the most efficient engines (certainly so for the mass consumption market) around. BTW, isn't it about time the American car manufacturers considered making their engines efficient too? They are really the other end when it comes to efficiency, say all you like. If you're not convinced, take any of the latest US-made cars (w/o a turbo) and make an average of their BHP/litre efficiency and compare that to the European and the Japanese ones (again w/o a turbo).

Ahhh, the sound of a VTEC engine at 8000 rpm!!! 8-)

Then again, I wouldn't complain about one of those babes 8-)

A brilliant mind knows no boundaries. Yes, food and water and shelter are important - vital. But if the basic needs are taken care of, having a PC - especially with Linux and gcc - can open doors that few other tools could open. A carpenter could build a home with a hammer, but a bright kid with ambition and curiousity could write the next ICQ or Napster.

Go read Age of Spiritual Machines by Ray Kurzweil and hang out at asktog.com. Both are good resources for trying to figure out where things are going. Kurzweil extrapolates to 2099 when the biggest argument of the day is "what is a human being" since we may be machines by then.

From the way this article reads, it almost sounds like Mac OS X isn't using file permissions at all, making the concept of multiple users rather pointless, if they all have the equivalent of root.

It's not exactly a pretty thought. Think about it. Imagine the software that runs on UNIX now - like zombies - and put them on the speed of a G4 with the knowledge of a Mac User.
