Re:Not for the Justice Minister to decideThe chairman of the swedish justice commitee does not agree with you. If you can read swedish, this might be interesting: Bodström anklagas för att utöva ministerstyre.
What he says in the article is (my translation): "It is not part of Bodstöm's duties to decide how the police should uphold the laws he is responsible for."
(Maybe someone who is better in political/legal english can explain this better than me. I'm really at the limit of my english skills here.)

Staged fake raid in Sweden
Is that the same group that got an insider to plant evidence of piracy on a set of servers so that a fake raid could be staged?
So then what's the buzz on background on the fake raid staged by the "piratbyrån" ? -
Re:Yes, fine...
TeliaSonera, old state monopoly operator in Sweden and Finland, plans for a large IP-based network (article in swedish) with an "IP jack" installed in every home within 2 years, replacing the phone jack.

Re:Beyond "piracy"
Sorry about the speeling, but when I get excited I can't write worth a damned.
Anyhow, I should explain the "million SEK" thing. It appears, from recent reports, that APB escrowed a sum in conjunction with applying for the search warrant:
"Antipiratbyrån, Stim, Universal Music, EMI Music och Sony Music har deponerat 1 miljon kronor hos tingsrätten för eventuella skadeståndskrav från Bahnhof."
It says that they escrowed one million Swedish Kronor in preparation for an eventual suit for damages from Bahnhof, for being shut down.
What this boils down to is that this might have been an outright "Public Relations" buy-in from APBs side. They're prepared to go get flimsy warrant (basically just making some stuff up if they need too), hype their "bust" to the media (this is their payoff) and shut down a company for a day, simply because they can afford the downside!
And don't kid yourself, the money for damages is coming from people who still buy products from Sony, Universal and the rest.
Which I'm not.

Re:Question for anyone...
Grandparent Can anyone cite a real life example where Solaris was used in place of linux on a new project for a valid reason?
parent The reasons? Linux couldn't handle emergencies, and wasn't always available.
After reading http://sartryck.idg.se/Art/Skistar_cs62003eng.html
Personally, I believe that installing Linux and Oracle in May of 2001 for mission critical business operations is, well, pretty stupid. Oracle only certified installation on Linux with Suse 7.1 in June of 2001. Oracle is not cheap. I doubt they saved any significant amount of cash by running Oracle on Linux vs Solaris. Back then, anyone reputable would run Oracle on Solaris, period. If it were up to me, I would probably still run Oracle on Solaris.
Also, from the link, there is a significant difference in the whole design of the new Solaris/Oracle setup with clustering and whatnot. I would attribute this change as a learning experience with the sysadmins.
Oh, and the grandparent asked for a _new_ project that chose Solaris over Linux, the linked article is for a switch from Linux to Solaris and a switch in Oracle versions/configurations as well.
Although I don't know of any projects off the top of my head, I would say that there are a number of Solaris/Oracle new installs where Linux was either not considered at all, or not considered for very long. If I were to use Linux and a database I'd use MySQL or postgress. If my reputation was on the line and the people had money and cared about integrity, I would still to this day go with Solaris/Oracle over Linux/Oracle. -

Some official info from Ericsson
From Ericsson's website:
Ericsson reorganizes its Bluetooth operations
Ericsson will discontinue its design and development of new Bluetooth
solutions for the semiconductor industry. A dedicated Bluetooth unit will
be created to support existing customers. In addition, Bluetooth
technology will be offered within Ericsson's offer for mobile platforms.
Ericsson invented the Bluetooth standard, which now is successfully
established worldwide. The standard has now reached a mature state and
Bluetooth products are being produced in large volumes. However, even
though large volumes are manufactured the business case for Ericsson's
design of new Bluetooth solutions is not strong enough.
Ericsson has decided to reorganize its Bluetooth operation and the current
operation for design and development of Bluetooth solutions, Ericsson
Technology Licensing, is going to be discontinued.
Instead, Ericsson will form a dedicated Bluetooth unit to maintain its current
customers. The customer list includes several leading semiconductor
manufacturers. Ericsson's Bluetooth knowledge will be integrated into
Ericsson Mobile Platforms, who will offer Bluetooth software as a part of
their offering.
Ericsson strongly believes in the power and opportunities of Bluetooth as a
technology and will continue to support the technology as a Bluetooth SIG
promoter.
-----
Also, Swedish IT newspaper Computer Swedenquotes Johan Åkesson as saying that '...[Bluetooth] licensing doesn't pay off anymore.' and that future Ericsson efforts will be in Bluetooth software development, in the company Ericsson Mobile Platforms. -
Swedes, read this!
For Swedes, here is a quite short article with tips for who do vote and who to not vote for in the coming election, June 13:th:
http://www.idg.se/ArticlePages/200406/02/200406021 32647_IDG.se255/20040602132647_IDG.se255.dbp.asp
I'm not too interested in this stuff normally, but for once I have an opinion and I will use this opportunity to show it.
Also, here is a link to one of the guys (in Miljöpartiet) who seems to be on our side:

Intel's nordic PR representative is denying thisFrom an article at IDG.se. A quick translation:
- Intel has never used to comment unreleased products, or so called "road maps". And there is no press conferences or presentations planned for today where this kind of announcement can be made.
But can't the news about the Tejas and Jayhawk cancellations still be true?
- I doubt that. In that case, it is the first time for seven years that I have not had the information available in advance.
So either it's a miscommunication on Intel's side, or the news are false... -
Media attentionIt got quite a lot of attention in Swedish media, both before and after the event. Here are some links (all in Swedish):

Terminal emulation, not emulation
In the original swedish article it's written that Microsoft believes that IBM probably is working on a Terminal Emulation solution, not a emulation solution.

Re:Suckage.
I think you're wrong. This is news in IDG papers and magazines over here. These are very widely distributed and read, even by people who only "use" a computer and isn't in 'the biz' per se.

But Sun says they'll put more money into linux!
Today I saw this article which says that, accoring to a statement by VP Scott McNealy, Sun is going to focus more and R&D, expecially Linux and Java. He does identify their main competitors as IBM and Microsoft.
They'll combat IBM by selling complete solutions of Software and Hardware, while they're to target Microsoft with Linux and Java.
They might not love linux, but...

Re:"Tried to Suppress"
This is in Swedish, but yet it explains some of the background, and indeed some of the initial American resistance against it as an international standard.

Re:Hyperbole?
True. After all, they're only mentioned three times on idg.se, and only one of those is for ComputerSweden. On the other hand, think about it. Are they releasing new products and technologies almost every day? Is their primary customer base the "IT companies", or big corporation that might invest heavily in a brand new Project Entropia IT-Infrastructure?
No, their primary focus is on gamers, hence the relatively low coverage in magazines that are about technology and consulting, and the relatively high coverage in publications that are about... (suspense) g@Mi/|/G!!!!1
As for the $15M, doesn't sound too unrealistic. Considering that they employ 70 people today, assume 50 people average. Salary, say $30k average, which would cost the company about $45k per employee due to our nifty Swedish tax laws (Not only does employees have to pay taxes, companies have to pay employer-fees as well). Now, multiply that with the 3 years that I know for sure that the company has existed (earliest mention of them was June 1999). That's about $6.75M in just salaries alone. Now, add office rental, equipment, internet access, electricity etc. Suddenly, the $15M doesn't sound too unrealistic anymore, now does it? =)
I admit though, I too doubt that they'll ever make a profit, but who knows. The market has surprised me before. -
Another project
Here is a pointer to an article about a swedish high school using Linux and old PCs as thin clients.
The article is in swedish, but I expect you to be able to read it and get the general meaning by using googles translation services. The headline says "Old computer gets new life in school project". -
Re:Only running on the XDK
I don't think they'd be allowed to release it.
Intresting...
What do you think will stop "them" from releasing it? Personally I don't see any problem at all with releasing it. Even the amazingly stupid DMCA that stops all fun things can't stop this one. I don't understand how it is any different to release a MAME port for the XBox than it is to release it for the PC or the DreamCast.

Re:Really Dr.?
True, it's the mathematics and science department. If anyone's interested there exist a CS department in Stockholm, but it's at KTH. (the Royal Institute of Technology)
I wrote in about this to /. before, unfortunately I couldn't find any english links. (This was on Friday, when it actually happened, *ahem*.) The links I found then can be found on www.idg.se that link should take you directly to the article. It's in Swedish though.
Furthermore, he (Linus) was refered to as "Dr." in a Swedish paper, so it might be correct. Assuming that the writer had done his research. ;-)
And nice to see you again Hobbex! :-) -

Case DISMISSED by the court
The court dismissed the suit completely. This was, as many said, a PR stunt by the IFPI, because the dismissal won't get the media converage the suit got.
