Re:Following today's showing of LotR
followed by Aeon Flux, Equilibrium, Brazil, Brave New World, Pleasantville and Hookers in Revolt
Ok, one of those might get cancelled (I'm guessing it'll be Brazil).

Re:In Space
(Which is why we're not building shields against gamma ray bursts.)
That is not the reason... The real reason we are not building shields against gamma ray bursts, is because we all secretly want to turn into the Incredible Hulk. http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0077031/ -
Way too much like that Bond movie.
This is way too much like that dumb Bond movie. First, they get their own NASA airfield for their own private jet. Then they base a Zeppelin there, cruising over the Golden Gate Bridge, no less. Now, a geothermal drilling project? They're definitely on script.
Who plays Grace Jones?

Forget that! It's even better.

B Movie
This sounds like one of those really bad disaster movies of the 70's starring Charlton Heston. Oh wait... http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0071455/

Re:Police state
Just wondering. Will the populous at large continue to allow these small steps in the erosion of personal liberties and privacy, or when too many people have become uncomfortable, will they finally stand up and revolt.
Try watching The Pianist. Hint: No - the frog won't jump out of the gradually-warming water.

Re:agreed, with a fatal flaw
...this exhibits lack of faith in the common person...
The common person?! Read some history boy! The "common person" gave us Napoleon, Hitler, Lenin, Stalin, etc, etc, etc... The "common person" cannot rule himself because the "common person" is obese, lazy, and psychologically whacked, ridden with religious guilt. The "common person" is an idiot and will believe anything. This has been, and is being proven over and over. The "common person" needs some intense therapy before he can do anything on his own. The "common person" should be taken behind the shed and have some of that arrogance whipped out of him. It was the elites that gave us Jefferson, Franklin, etc, etc, etc. and modern day democracy and economics. If the "common person" ruled the earth, it would end up like this

Re:Of course older politicans don't get it.
Are you kidding? There are probably half a dozen movies put out every year that are as bad or worse than that one, and that only exist because of huge subsidies to Canadian movie producers. There are occasional gems, but probably 80%+ of it is crap. It's so bad that half of what they presented in the show "Made In Canada", a parody of the Canadian film/tv industry, is probably based on reality.
It's a great show, by the way. Kind of like what would happen if you did a version of "The Office", but set it in the movie industry (and "Made in Canada" pre-dates "The Office", so it isn't just a rip-off). I think my favorite part is that the fake production company ("Pyramid Productions") is an obvious parody of Alliance-Atlantis, which was the parent company of the actual company that made "Made In Canada". Alliance Atlantis was responsible for *a*lot* of B-grade movies. It's like "Made in Canada" was an inside documentary of why so many of those awful things got made

Re:Of course older politicans don't get it.
Our TV/Radio has some rules about a certain amount of Canadian content.
Does that mean that you get to watch this gem often?

You mean like the movie?
Team America, World Police.

The title was one of the best jokes in the whole movie... Well that and the puppet sex scene. -

Re:Movies are not always on film anymore
Movie theaters nowadays use a 1080p or bigger format
Not just movies today - movies on film are analog
Film is old; DLP has begun to replace it.
Depends on the environment. The 'special features' for Star Gate Continuum has comments about them using a 16mm film camera to film up in the Artic b/c (i) anyone there could service the camera on the spot, and (ii) the camera was better adapted for the environment with a proven track record of performance.

Re:False
There are definitely landlords out there who do not do credit checks. They are my favorite landlords.
I have purchased many buildings for well below market value when these landlords get themselves into trouble with problem tenants. They'll do anything for me to take their problem off their hands.
Through experience, I know exactly the type of resident I'm targeting, and my rental criteria reflect this.
FYI- landlord/tenant laws are generally enforced pretty zealously. I can't think of a single landlord/tenant law that is just ignored. Tenants' rights groups, legal aid, etc., make sure that landlords who don't follow the law get put out of business.

Walt Disney died in 1966, not 1959...
As of 2009-06-19, he's been deed for 42+ years and not 50 per hairyfeet's post.
Walter Elias Disney (December 5, 1901 - December 15, 1966)
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Walt_Disney
Walt Disney
Date of Birth:
5 December 1901, Chicago, Illinois, USADate of Death:
15 December 1966, Los Angeles, California, USAhttp://www.imdb.com/name/nm0000370/
However, I agree that copyright is broken in the USA which is likely why infringement is so rampant of creative works created by big American media companies -- it's tit for tat and a form of 'civil disobedience' done by the masses who are tired and fed up with 'forever minus a day'( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jack_Valenti ) copyright terms and respond the only way they know how to try to cripple such companies by simply watching/using their works without paying for them.

Re:Bunk
On the other hand, not every creative work needs to aspire to fulfill some kind of self-absorbed High Culture milieu.
You're making a false dichotomy.
Last night, my daughter and I watched the 1948 The Three Musketeers. Definitely not High Culture. But exciting, and fun.
But the story would not have been enhanced by showing Lady de Winter stabbing Jason-like at Constance, or the Executioner Of Lisle actually dropping the ax on Lady de Winter's head and seeing blood spurt out her aorta.
Sometimes it's nice to play with boobies and bullets.
Sure. In private, amongst adults, at the gun range!

Re:artistic maturity ?
I'm going through the movie in my mind, and nothing about it stands out as sexual or graphically violent.
In fact, Hitchcock made the movie B/W because the the Shower Scene in color would be too exploitative.
Maybe you're talking about a remake that I haven't seen,
1998 remake by Gus Van Sant. http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0155975/

Re:Urban Transit
Of course they do. They're called "family and friends".
But the paranoid "think of the children crowd" doesn't let things like that get in their way. It's a lot more fun to pretend that it's random thugs that does it. Safer too.
One thing I really liked about "Titus" was the last episode. It's a comedy show and it brings up molestation in a serious way - and doesn't pretend that the bad guys are random strangers.

Re:This is the way I did it.
Lee Harvey, you are a madman. When you stole that cow, and your friend tried to make it with the cow. I want to party with you, cowboy. If the two of us together, forget it...
Do your users run with "administrator" equivalent accounts? If so, you are crazy to run Windows without AV. You are a madman.

Re:I don't get it...
If you don't 'get it', then see the movie Gattica:
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0119177/We are rapidly sliding down a slippery slope of discrimination based on genetics...choosing the superior race and all that, and choosing sex, hair and eye colour are just the beginning of such nonsense. I really don't care what someone's eyes or hair colour are...everyone is beautiful and priceless and EQUALLY important! What is with idiots wanting to select eye and hair colour? Lunacy of the first order. I don't care what colour my baby's eye and hair colour are, or anyone elses. Such appalling narcissism, prejudice (blue is better than green, let's say...WHY? Is white skin better than black? Is muslim better than jewish? Et cetera, ad infinitum.) You idiots choosing baby by sex, hair and eye colour: get over yourselves...anyone doing this is nothing other than a eugenics fool, leading to prejudice against 'degene erates' (see the movie).
And as we reach the $100 genome level, and companies/universities, etc. start deciding that only those with the proper genes will be hired/admitted, etc. (blue eyes, blond hair, Germanic race...sound familiar?), you may find yourself being discriminated against a lot sooner than you think. (Has already happened, so some attempts at meaningless, unenforceable, feel good laws against genetic discrimination are starting to make an appearance...mainly to improve lawyers' bottom lines, of course...justice has nothing to do with it.
http://www.technologyreview.com/biomedicine/22112/Only the expense and time involved in sequencing has protected people from genetic discrimination...those 'problems' are soon going to disappear, when it will become very cheap (e.g. $100) to find out all the genetic secrets that an HR dept/insurance companies/etc. screening new applicants, etc. would want to know. Gattaca society is rapidly approaching. They also show screening based on genetic characteristics of embryos in the movie.
-
Re:Nonsense
Isn't this how the Time Machine movie started?
-
Re:It's not the eye color screening that bugs me
Tons of people don't want children. Unfortunately, a disproportionate number of these people are on the more intelligent/capable end of the spectrum, genetically-speaking...

ballpoint pen gun?
Ha, okay. More likely to blow up in your hand, and useless past about 10 feet, but I'll give you the benefit of the doubt.
Yes, in a 007 movie, "The Man with the Golden Gun" an assassin has a gun like this. The pen is the gun barrel and I believe a cigarette lighter is the body with ammo.

drivers
Given that a driving licence is supposed to be proof of your ability to drive,
If that were true, at least 1/3 of the people in my area would be removed from the road for their inability to drive in something close to a safe or competent manner.
Unfortunately I agree, many people on the roads seem to be unsafe drivers. Reminds me of Sandra Bullock's driving in "Speed 2: Cruise Control". I think people are better when tested, once they have a license they become demons.

Re:Is it powered by bovine excretions?
y'know.... there was an interview with Alcubierre in the documentary How William Shatner Changed the World where he said that while the math supports the possibility of a warp drive, the energy requirements would be prohibitive. Like... an order of magnitude or two larger than the output of Sol.

Re:You know that
Sorry, but it's been done. Note the viewer summary Re: the two female leads in this movie, "One is obsessed by Houdini, the other designs self-defense bras."

They don't need to, it already exists. It's called a ballot. Know it, use it, love it.
I won't point out the obvious, i.e., the votes can be seen to be rigged.
Rather, I'll just agree with John Thorne when he says "If voting ever really changed anything, they'd make it illegal."

Or maybe they'll end up like the couple in this story.

Re:BluRay?
I plugged in my USB drive and started up BD-Live, only to find out it's literally just trailers for other movies. Why is this a feature?
Does anyone else remember the scene from A Christmas Story where the protagonist goes to great lengths and effort to get a ROT13 decoder wheel from the cereal box company so that he can decode the "secret message" at the end of his favorite radio program only to find out that the "secret message" is actually just another advertisement?
BTW: Why buy your blue ray player from Sony, the same company that spits on your rights and installs root kits on your PC? I wouldn't buy anything from Sony, even if they were the only vendor left, after the crap they pulled with those root kits.

Re:A screen
Psh. Your puny mesh screen isn't going to stop the bird; it just means his death-by-CF6 sentence is commuted, only instead to being put through a fine mesh screen.
