Hmmm. I didn't see that movie, but I read the short story on which it's apparently based.

Re:Kill Bugs! Kill Bugs! Kill More Bugs!
Actually the first picture in the article looks ripped from Half Life 2, looking at The Citadel. The second picture looks like they took a monster from Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within.

Re:Another movie license game?
I'd buy it if THEY based it on THEY LIVE! and I get to play as Robertson Piper, esq.

Another movie license game?
Is the game They based at all on the 2002 horror film titled They ?

No Cruel, Unusual PunishmentsI don't understand this insistance on being fair with convicted criminals. They weren't being fair in most cases when they broke the law so why do we need to do this for them. You'd be quite at home in the alternate Earth where graffiti carries the death penalty and where Proposition 199, the "Instant Justice Initiative" was passed, providing for the instantaneous denial of appeals.
Or perhaps you'd prefer the world of Judge Dredd: 1 year for Littering, 2 years for Speeding, 1 year for Flatulism.
Or the law of the Edo, that for every crime there is only one penalty: death. (Apologies to CleverNickName.)"There can be no justice as long as laws are absolute! Even life itself is an exercise in exceptions."
So while we're burning the Constitution, let's not forget the part about no cruel, unusual punishments.

Excruciatingly bad Mars movie: Mission to Mars (2000). Anyone who was inspired by that dreck should be deported, not granted a patent.

The US' original concepts going down the drain
It appears that every day the US are inching slowly but surely towards a police state, all this to help a bunch of mafioso keep a stranglehold on the entertainment market
This last example of a "Law" appears like the first forays into the world of Minority Report for good. At the same time, it's sort of also going in the direction of Gattaca
This is far, far away from the concepts of the "Land of the free" heralded by the forefathers... -

Re:Yeah?
Native Japanese speakers have no problems with "L" sounds, particularly a leading li sound as in Linux since it's nearly the same sound as one of letters of the Japanese alphabet. Even when an "L" is within a word such as "flight," it becomes fu-la-i-to. R becomes an L for most Japanese speakers, not the other way around (so "right" would sound a little like "light). English speakers and actors with fake Japanese accents change the L to R, which is why my name is spelled as Akira in English, not Akila (which would still be mispronounced, but it's bit closer). Japanese speakers tend to mangle English words, but not in the way that you typically hear in the movies.

Great 3 D movies? Nyet...
Nyet SOME movies are art Citizen Kane leaps to mind:
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0033467/
as well say Ingmar Bergman movies:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ingmar_Bergman
however 99.9999% of movies are entertainment as is true of music, video games. There is nothing wrong with entertainment I have my guilty pleasures in music like the Go Gos from the 80s, very fun but I'd never try to claim it was art just fun music with good memories for geezer aged people like myself. I hope you aren't trying to claim all movies are art, would that include Porkies III, and Ernest Scared Stupid?
Some movies are art, as are perhaps some video games though as I have said I have yet to see the video game that I think will be remembered in 50 years time when computers will offer us fully imersive reality, and Half Life Quake 4 etc will seem tired, quaint and utterly lacking interest. That to me says that 99.9999% of video games are graphic sizzle eye candy without substance much like the 3 d post cards that were produced at the turn of the century:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stereoscopy
In a similar fashion 3 d movies from the 60s to early 80s did not leave us any masterpieces, Jaws 3d ring a bell? Just because a technology is new and exciting to us does not guarantee it will lead to the production of great art.
And BTW I do hope I am wrong and something comes of video games but I am not convinced, YET. I am looking forward to Spoor BTW and I am not the cynic about this that Ebert is, I just have high personal standards (which may differ from yours, shrug). -
Re:Negative image
Watch The Battle of Algiers to see why racial profiling does not work. Arab women passed themselves off as French women, walked straight through the security points, and blew up cafes.
(I realise that this is a film, not a documentary, but this incident at least really happened).

Brando would be ashamed of her
"I get an e-mail from the broker saying, 'Sorry, my client is not interested in the space, too bad we couldn't make the big bucks' -- then there's a frown face!"
Maybe she should've made them an offer they couldn't refuse. Then she wouldn't have anything to worry about (except blowback). -
Re:does this mean ...
I'm sure owners of the Apollo 13 movie http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0112384/ will have to surrender their copies as well. Can't have footage of people using the machine, even if they are actors in a replica.

Oh man! Rick Berman is working for AMD now? He wasn't content fucking up the Star Trek franchise? What is the semiconductor equivalent of killing off Commander Data? AMD, I guess, will be as screwed as Scott Bacula.

Re:The need for money outweighs the need for digniStar Trek has been headed by Rick Berman since the latter years of Star Trek: The Next Generation. In that time, Berman did everything possible to destroy the show. Berman... Berman... oh! You mean the guy that isn't involved in this movie?! Yeah, take another look.

Susan Dey was pretty hot back in the day in that movie too!

Re:unlocking ...
This is a great post. However, it fails to emphasize the real reason: Consumer Rights.
In Europe, the companies are afraid of their consumers.
In U.S., the consumers are afraid of the companies. -- And somehow it always come true; the US is all about selfishness; A result of a society with only one rule: Profit.
The European companies learned a long time ago that they have to work together and make universal solutions for a long-term profit, whilst in the U.S. the companies seem to get into wars and limit their customers from other competitors. Why? Because, in the U.S., the government have less power than the companies.
I've watched some of Michael Moore's films, and even if he sometimes loose his objectiveness, he's still the person all you U.S. citizen should learn from.
What's Keeping US Phones in the Stone Age?

Re:Buttons!?
Currently with my treo i can type out a phone number by feel while driving, or type out a text with the phone in my pocket. Also the buttons give you a confirmation that you gave input, as you can feel the button go down. Without being able to feel a keyboard it seems like typing could be a pain.
Well, touchscreens have worked out well on Federation vessels and they hardly ever crashed into planets. And even that usually after the touchscreens exploded into somebody's face. -
Re:A possible workaround
Indeed, but web sites using deprecated features do not get updated and do not go away, so web browsers continue supporting those features forever, and almost nothing has ever been "phased out" in practice. (Browsers also have to continue supporting features that were never specified or documented at all – e.g. the front page of IMDB accidentally uses <image>, which still gets treated like <img> because nobody wants to write a browser that doesn't work with such sites). Since all the browsers implement those things, and any other HTML consumer ought to work the same if it's going to work as well as possible on the web, HTML5 does specify how things like plaintext are handled, and so it should continue to be supported correctly in the future.
It's still true that deprecated features are usually bad ideas and it's strongly suggested to not use them, and plaintext seems like a particularly bad idea, but the danger of them being phased out and no longer implemented is quite small.

Re:It must have been Joel who...
Wow, you're really smart. Of course all that book-learnin' doesn't mean you aren't kind of stupid too.
The IMDB Entry shows that the actual title of the film is La Battaglia di Maratona, with a handful of "also known as" entries. Take up your translation complaints with the original US distributors. -
Re:One of my faves
-
Re:BlasphemyI toured the Best Brains studios, and it was right after Joel left. I played basketball with Mike, met TV's Frank, and saw the set.
Mike Nelson is a really, really nice guy, and while he will forever be known as a second-rate Joel, I don't think it's fair. Joel left on his own accord and they brought in Mike to keep the show afloat.
Name one show where the replacement person is actually better than the original person who played the role. I can't think of one. They're nearly always worse, and it's usually because you are already familiar with the original actor.
Mike did well enough, and the show was still fantastic with him there. For example, the movie This Island Earth was easily my favorite MST3K "show" (it was really called the MST3K Movie) and Mike brought a lot to it.

I think the best way to sum it up is just to say that Mystery Science Theater 3000 would have had a field day.
In fact, this movie was so bad they had to bring back MST3K just to make fun of it!

Re:Bush is Freest President In Decades
I am not happy with the Dept of Homeland Security or USA PATRIOT, but, even with those issues aside, I could make the argument that in total, Bush has done more to EXTEND freedom to the American people than Democrats would have.
a) By continually deregulating everything, Bush gives the small business owner and entrepreneur more rights, whereas Democrats would take them away. Bush has made it easier for people to use their land as they best see fit, and made it easier for business's to hire whom they want, when they want. Democrats, on the other hand, would make it harder for a person to use their land the way they want, harder for businesses to hire flexibly, and harder to adjust to market conditions for wages.
b) George Bush has reaffirmed the right to revolution by changing the Justice Dept stance that 2nd Amendment implies an individual right to keep and bear arms, and backed that up by letting the assault weapons ban lapse.
c) George Bush's tax cuts have allowed people to keep more of their money, and, more importantly, his cuts on the death tax allow people to decide what their life's work is for, not the government.
d) Although the execution was botched, while Democrats and liberals bemoan dictatorships around the world, George Bush put 200,000 boots on the ground to try and bring about democracy in a severely troubled part of the world.
By contrast, Democrats argue for MORE laws about how we use our property, for a wide variety of pet causes, call for more TAXES, not less, call for an end to the idea that the USA should intervene against dictatorships, and call for increased regulation in general. Sure, you might like what the Democratic vision offers, but at the end of the day, Republicans will give you more freedom than you can ever want, leaving you to the chaos of the marketplace, whereas the Democrats inevitably argue for less freedom in favor of social stability!
So please, knock off the double think that the left wing has instilled in you. You can't be free if the government takes more of your wealth and makes more laws.
tjstork, what you've just said is one of the most insanely idiotic things I have ever heard. At no point in your rambling, incoherent response were you even close to anything that could be considered a rational thought. Everyone on this forum is now dumber for having read it. I award you no points, and may God have mercy on your soul.
