This is a capitalistic society--Linux variants need to adapt or die. Not the customers.

Either they have to provide the functionality needed to communicate with the software in question, or they have to provide a suitable replacement with a good migration capability. Good, consistent user interfaces is a plus.

Demanding that the *customer* adapt is just silly and a good way to make sure that linux remains marginal.

Thats a good example, but I know a better one: The Arrival, where aliens have infiltrated society and government and are churning out greenhouse gasses and heat to make the planet more comfortable for them.

The entire reason why Barnes and Noble can let their customers read the books and put them back up on the shelf is because the average human being would rather do the reading at home. Most books are reasonably priced and allows the customer to take it home and read in the comfort of their own home.

On the other hand, if Hollywood gives consumers 'free' downloads and previews of movies, there will be no incentive to buy it because the consumer is already at home and comfortable. As the article said, Hollywood needs to make it so that consumers WANT to buy the movie. Bring the screenwriters out from behind the veil and give them more reward because they are the original concept artists in the movie industry. Since the quality coming out of Hollywood these days is pretty low (in my opinion), there is less satisfaction from forking out the $20 for a DVD. Why support crap? I am personally all for supporting the industry (buying DVDs and going to the theater) when there is awesome content on the screen (Pixar movies anyone?). But I refuse to buy garbage (Stranded - worst movie I've ever seen).

However, unlike the other 17 consecutive failures, the article was deleted this time.

The articles lengthy and vastly homosexual existence was cut short today when, after being nominated for less than 24 hours, it was deleted by zionist government officials [see: wikipedia editors]. The irony in this comes in the form of the fact that it is written in a certain section of the Talmud [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Deletion_p olicy], that an article must remain up for deletion for a minimum of 5 days for discussion and debate purposes before any deletion.

The jew who commenced final delete operation was Andrew J. "Tawker" W[name deleted to protect privacy], a teenage Wikipedo residing in Shithole, Canada and attending a public college together with 16000 other unwashed Canucks.

When asked his opinion on the situation, GNAA president timecop remarked, "lol drama." Truer words have never been spoken, as much lol-inducing drama, and most likely multiple jew lynchings and anallingus seminars will come in the following days.

Well remember we, as license payers, pay for the content to be made. Giving it away to the world for free would probably be in violation of their charter, and would certainly make me ask "Why am I paying this again"?

I've seen such arguments trotted out from time to time, and believe me -- I feel for my friends out in the UK who have to pay for a television license. Here in Canada we have no such fee, which is the way things should be.

HOWEVER, don't for a minute assume that your TV license fee dollars are the only funds that go into producing quality BBC programming, and thus that said programming should never escape across boarders through the Internet.

You see, where you pay a license fee to the BBC to own a television in your part of the world, here in my part of the world the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation (CBC) is funded (in part) through tax dollars -- including my tax dollars. And yet CBC Programming (especially documentaries) is shown all around the world, including portions of which are available online.

Aside from that, let's look at one of the shows the BBC is proposing to make available online: Doctor Who. Click the link and scroll down to "Production Companies". Yes, that's right, the venerable BBC Sci-Fi series is produced in part by the CBC.

Thus, I at least have already paid for part of Doctor Who. How many other modern BBC shows are co-produced in conjunction with the national broadcasters in other (esp. Commonwealth) countries?

(Let's not also mention that the BBC already broadcasts world-wide via various cable outlets, like BBC Canada and BBC America, amongst others).

I don't argue with the complaint that the UK's TV licensing fee seems like a cash-grab to my eyes, but that's up to you and your countrymen to fix, and not something I can affect change for. However, the view that your licensing fees are the sole source of funding for popular BBC shows doesn't exactly reflect modern reality, and the desire to prevent such shows from being made available to the world for free online isn't going to put the cat back into the bag: it escaped long, long ago, and probably never should have been in there in the first place.

It's been obvious to people who "work" with linux, that Ubuntu is trying to be the friendly, cool, slick linux, and portray other distros as the geeks. Just like high school. Of course just like real life, there are more geeks than you realize and they are a lot more productive than the "slick" people. To counter this, the slick people employ marketing science -- which actually has nothing to do with marketing or science -- it's just lying about the other guy to make yourself look good.

I don't have a problem with Ubuntu, and I quite appreciate what they are trying to do in usability, but to pretend that they are the most popular linux distro is (quite literally) belittling of the others.

I fully agree that for those who remember history to avoid repeating its mistakes, there is no shortage of discouraging precedents. I also agree that interactive filmmaking attracts a steady stream of fools and charlatans.

However, I would suggest that there are some glimmers of hope:
* broadband is a stable, worldwide medium with pretty good data speeds, going to pretty powerful computers in millions of homes and offices worldwide
* sorry, you know that of course, just trying to make a point which is that the techonlogical infrascturcutre is in place in a way that was not the case before -- I don't know the tech details of CDi, but it would have been running at about 1x or 2x CD speed, I assume, so proably around 150kbps? And only going to homes with the right player installed. That's a big disadvantage.
* when you're talking about cinema, digital cinema is still not mature, but it's been rolling out fast since 2006.

If a idea is bad, it should go away.

That's perhaps a nice wish. However, assuming it will go away is another thing.

Government is not simply a world marketplace that offers ideas and if no one buys, it restocks the shelves with other ideas. We give government the special power of force that we do not give shopkeepers wherein if people disagree with the ideas it is offering, it can take action. The more vague that action, the more subject to the individual whim of an individual attempting to enforce or, just as likely, to exploit such powers.

To pick an obvious and somewhat overused example, the bad ideas of the Nazi movement were indeed rejected by the people, but it's a stretch to say "therefore one should not worry about governments getting an occasional wrong idea because these things tend to work out". It took time to notice the problem in that case, and very bad things happened in the interim. By the time a problem was noticed, it took was not easy to fix. One cannot simply fast forward to the outcome without seeing the time in between and say "it was a bad idea and eventually no one bought it".

McCarthyism in the US played out with somewhat similar shape, although fortunately far less cost in human lives. But by similar shape, I mean that it was a kind of insidious idea from the start, and it crept like a cancer with people not seeing what a bad idea it was until it was widespread and it started to impact so many people that it simply could not be ignored.

The notion that the government should be able to push things "harmful to minors" into this ghetto is like giving a big gun to anyone who has government authority to act but not telling them who to aim it at. Harmful to minors is not a statement like "boils at 100 degrees" that can be objectively tested. What protections does it offer to people who have no intent to harm minors and are simply operating in an area that raises questions.

Some things that have been classified by at least some people as harmful to minors within our lifetime include sex education, Al Gore's An Inconvenient Truth , and the teaching of evolution. Will we expect to find the teaching of safe sex practices only in the .xxx domain? What about climatechange.xxx or darwin.xxx? And that's only in the US, the supposed model of freedom. How will such a domain be construed in countries around the world that have more conservative points of view. Will we see tjmaxx.xxx? barnesandnoble.xxx? mit.edu.xxx?

The problem with "parental" government is that people often naively assume that it it has a brain at all, and also that the brain will be applied uniformly. In fact, what is more likely is the kind of thing you see on cop shows all the time where cops come to a restaurant owner who won't give them the info they want and they say "I'm sure you wouldn't want the health inspector in here all over you." So the guy caves and gives up the information. The public isn't served by the health code law because in the end, the law is more useful (to those TV cops, at least) or some undisclosed purpose than it is for actually making sure things get cooked right.

And the problem is that the undisclosed purpose is flexible and varying. The whole war on terror is going the same way. If the government can make "being a person" (or at least, all of its aspects) sufficiently illegal, then there's always at least some club handy for threatening to arrest a person if he gets out of hand, whatever the enforcer thinks is out of hand. And at that point, there's no freedom left. That's an analogy that Slashdotters should understand: It's like software patents. Overly broad. Overly vague. Applied inconsistently. Difficult to defend. And offering no really safe avenue of behavior. And that means no one can safely develop anything. They can just hope they aren't singled out for enforcement.

The government story about the events of 9/11 has never been proven. They refused to offer evidence that could prove or disprove their theory to non-government sources. The 'authorities' destroyed evidence. Why?

Several ex-CIA employees have said that the CIA did transport drugs into the United States, and sell sizable quantities to mafiosi and other distributors. I don't think they directly sold crack in LA or anywhere else. Maybe they did, maybe not. You don't know for fact, either way.

There will always be more crappy movies than good ones, but that's not the point really. The point is that Hollywood, with a lack of money (or perceived lack) will just cut stuff.

Less movies == less good movies (at least to start). Good movies are hard to make and run the risk of small audiences. So unless we and our friends and our friends' friends, all start packing up the art house movies, then we're just going to get more John Cena movies. And if Hollywood becomes scared, they're not going to release less John Cena movies, they'll release more. (again for a time, until someone breaks the mold and everyone else sees $$$ again)

Or let's put it another way: the more "advanced" a society gets the less applicable natural selection becomes. Why? Because societies in first world countries will try to safeguard its citizens against stupidity or any other "lack of fitness". Not only does it protect its citizens against natural hazards, such as wild animals, bad weather, famines etc. but it also strives to protect them from any new threats arising due to the new life style.

The example in this case would be: guy hears about scientists sterilizing a sponge, guy rushes to the microwave in order to replicate the experiment, sponge catches fire, guy frantically jumps around in circles while microwave oven and room catches on fire, this sets off the fire alarm which in turn calls the firefighters, they extinguish the fire, guy sues everybody and their grandma, gets rich and procreates like mad..

We have basically neutralized effects of natural selection on us by assuring the survival and procreation of individuals that would be "less fit". Instead we are subjected mainly to genetic drift, the other effect that determines the gene pool of a population.

The movie Idiocracy actually takes it a step further and postulates that stupidity actually increases the "fitness" of an individual (i.e. a stupid individual is more likely to have children), thus a bunch of generations down the line we'll be living in an "idiocracy" such as the one depicted ;) - A funny movie none the less.

The jew who commenced final delete operation was Andrew J. "Tawker" W[name deleted to protect privacy], a teenage Wikipedo residing in Shithole, Canada and attending a public college together with 16000 other unwashed Canucks.

When asked his opinion on the situation, GNAA president timecop remarked, "lol drama." Truer words have never been spoken, as much lol-inducing drama, and most likely multiple jew lynchings and anallingus seminars will come in the following days.
