Re:John McCain loses more of my respect every day
Hillary would be more palatable without changing a single position, if she would just lose the ACK-ACK Mars Attacks! mode of speech. It would certainly encourage reasoned debate on her positions if you could stand to listen to them.

GNAA OFFICIAL PRESS RELEASEJewish pedophiles delete GNAA article from Wikipedia
Jewish pedophiles delete GNAA article from Wikipedia
Drake - Nigeria, Weekly GayzetteThe nuts of wikipedos worldwide were ruptured with pleasure today, as the GNAA article was deleted. Due to the rampant amount of homophobic nigger-hate circulating through Wikipedo, the GNAA article was put up for yet another vote for deletion [read as very fat dick] today, its 18th nomination. However, unlike the other 17 consecutive failures, the article was deleted this time.
The articles lengthy and vastly homosexual existence was cut short today when, after being nominated for less than 24 hours, it was deleted by zionist government officials [see: wikipedia editors]. The irony in this comes in the form of the fact that it is written in a certain section of the Talmud [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Deletion_p olicy], that an article must remain up for deletion for a minimum of 5 days for discussion and debate purposes before any deletion.
The jew who commenced final delete operation was Andrew J. "Tawker" W[name deleted to protect privacy], a teenage Wikipedo residing in Shithole, Canada and attending a public college together with 16000 other unwashed Canucks.
When asked his opinion on the situation, GNAA president timecop remarked, "lol drama." Truer words have never been spoken, as much lol-inducing drama, and most likely multiple jew lynchings and anallingus seminars will come in the following days.
Want to do your part? Well then, you can either follow the Undeletion request process (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Undeletion _policy.), or you can do your best to continue ruining Wikipedo, preferably the second.

That had to be the second worst movie ever made, right behind this one. Then again, I haven't seen Gigli, which was the previous record holder for worst movie ever, from what I understand.

Re:Cringely says...Robert X. Cringely says they are almost singlehandedly responsible for the death of the major newspapers. His point is that the highest margin activity at news papers is the classified ads. Even the circulation department is a net loss. And you can't compete with Free. There is one giant, glaringly obvious flaw in this whole line of reasoning. It assumes nothing has arisen to replace that leftover from the 18th century, the printed newpaper. You need to ask why craigslist has been able to undercut newspapers so effectively. Has some new, less expensive form of communication arisen? Something that perhaps doesn't rely on physically moving a massive amount of rolled wood pulp around every day? I quote Dr Egon Spengler: "Print is dead."

Re:Uhh... No....
IMDB to the rescue. It screens 1.85 in the US and 1.66 in Europe (that's standard for Europe). Though a non-anamorphic negative exposure is 4:3, the action is always framed to work for the wider ratios (the top and bottom gets cut off).
Amazon only lists a 1.33 version. It's possible they haven't gotten around to re-mastering it.

Re:Wtf
I like the premise, but I think the metaphor is wrong: there is no actual debt, and in now way does being in prison function as repayment. Aside from other philosophical issues around the meaning of justice, individuals that demonstrate that they are a danger to society must be segregated from society at least until (arguably, only until) they are no longer a danger to society. The idea that someone presents such a danger that they need to be tracked suggests they are too dangerous to be "out." The theoretical streaker is unlikely to present any danger to society, whereas an unrepentant serial rapist with multiple prior convictions probably shouldn't be let out again, or at least until there's some plausible developments in psychiatry. But the same holds true for violent criminals, so clearly sex crimes are singled out solely for their prurient interest, by providing an opportunity to gratuitously describe sex in an offensive way that winds up voters but is without any political or legislative merit, which sounds a lot like a sex crime itself to me...
On balance though, we should be grateful for Lawrence & garner v. State of Texas. It would be a great help to pass a constitutional amendment barring laws that dictate the private behavior of consenting adults. Ask your legislators.
As the "Won't somebody please think of the children" subject alludes, the Simpsons have effectively commented on bogeyman politics, in particular with the bear patrol episode. It's just transparent pandering, creating a false fear and exploiting it; and all the better that the subject be indefensible, though simply defenseless will also work when all the good ones are taken. Sex criminals will always be an easy target, but once that bandwagon has left the station (again), it's time to attack immigrants (poor Groundskeeper Willie), or Albania, or homosexuals, or whatever.
The best thing about this sort of moralist pandering and posturing is that politicians are just as morally complex as everyone else and their utter humiliation is a nice reward for the harm they do, so we should all thank Limbaugh, Haggard, Barnes, Bakker, etc for the joy they've given us. -

Re:Same thing happening with movie directors
From one Moore hater to another, there is ONE Michael Moore movie that you HAVE to see. Michael Moore wrote and directed Canadian Bacon . Plot summary: "The U.S. President, low in the opinion polls, gets talked into raising his popularity by trying to start a cold war against Canada." Absolutely hilarious and highly recommended. This was before he became a spoof of himself.

Mmmmm, protozoan.
From imdb:
Tank: Here you go, buddy. Breakfast of Champions.
Mouse: If you close your eyes, it almost feels like you're eating runny eggs.
Apoc: Yeah, or a bowl of snot.
Mouse: Do you know what it really reminds me of? Tasty Wheat. Did you ever eat Tasty Wheat?
Switch: No, but technically, neither did you. -
Re:why this is so hard
Yeah, I saw the movie - rather liked the kinematics on the robot dog, or whatever it was - science sucked somewhat less than usual (somewhat). Gamma will travel at c, but I thought that the point of this particular article was the resoloution of some particle calcs to predict aurorae and such. Probably need an auxilliary study to worry about the c-speed component stuff... baby steps.

Jumpin' Jack FlashThere are many, many things wrong with Jumpin' Jack Flash and I only watched it because I thought that if Whoopi Goldberg's HBO special was funny, her movies would be funny. The wrongest computer-specific thing is the graphics on the login prompt. After you type "B-FLAT" (a password that has no username associated with it and that is echoed as it's typed), it goes through a full minute of swirling 1986 graphics that say things like "Jumpin' Jack Flash" and "B-FLAT" and "Access Granted" and eighth-notes all over the place. Did I mention these 16-color swirling things are happening on a monochrome monitor?
As a user, if I had to put up with that every time I logged in I'd be screaming Get to the fucking prompt! every morning from 9:05 to 9:06, and by the sixth or seventh day I'd be storming the IT department with a cricket bat so I could re-educate some Bastard Systems Programmer on the finer points of having one's brains splattered across a distant wall.
Now that I'm older and wiser the entire movie makes me feel that way. Bad movie. If the old self-loathing is acting up I'd encourage you to watch Burglar right after. No computer problems in it, really, it just sucks quite a bit.

Re:Endnote?
Endnote integration is done through VBA?
Endnote, and any other Office integration, is done through Component Object Model (COM), which is ActiveX, which is Object Linking and Embedding (OLE).
COM is an 800lb gorilla approach to making software that is language, but not platform, agnostic. COM is like the Truman Show for computers; it seems like the way to go, until you realize that there is a heck of a lot more world outside Redmond's bubble.
Are they dropping all support from Office, just the IDE, what? Lots of ways for to skin the cat... -
One way...
Step 1: Obtain one of these. (Or at least the lead character so time-warped.)
Step 2: Update property insurance.
Step 3: Obtain lots of sweets and caffeine and sprinkle liberally.
Step 4: (Optional) Record via web-cams, cut up into holiday movie, and profit!

I suggest you watch this 1990 documentary. It shows the many methods in which your house can be protected around Christmas time.

"Accidentally" Leave a Kid At Home
Queue up Home Alone on Netflix, dude. Assuming you've got a kid (and yes, I realize that this is Slashdot, so that's quite an assumption), your best bet is to "accidentally" leave your kid at your house when you leave town. The benefits are substantial:
- Your kid will have the time of his life
- You'll get some "alone time" with your spouse
- If Joe Pesci and Daniel Stern come a-knockin', your kid will kick their butts
- Profit! (from not having to pay anyone to watch the place)

Re:Hollywood? Not accurate? I'm shocked, SHOCKED!
"Panic in the Skies is the name of the movie." After looking it up, I see that I was wrong about one detail, it wasn't a midair collision or explosion, they were actually struck by lightning. It was an ordinary lightning strike that, for some reason, in this case, killed the pilot and co-pilot and damaged the equipment in the cockpit. Presumably the autopilot must have managed to survived and stayed on.
A user review on IMDb mentions the part about "a computer guy plugging his Laptop in to run the autopilot".

Re:Hollywood? Not accurate? I'm shocked, SHOCKED!
I don't think it was either of those two movies. There were no laptops when "Airport 75" was made
and the description found in your link to the other movie doesn't sound right either.
I probably saw the movie on TV somewhere back in the 1990s.Probably Panic in the Skies!

Harry Tuttle
Yes, "heating engineer." Actually I screwed up with those suggestions, especially with Seymour, because of course they weren't computer hackers, but just geeks (for some reason I thought that page was about 20 Movie Geeks; D'oh!).
But there were "computer hackers" in Brazil; the real hacker was Sam Lowry, who used quite a number of techniques including social engineering: "ERE I AM JH." The funnier candidate would be Harvey Lime, who had the memorable lines, "Computers... are my forte" and "I'm a bit of a whiz on that thing," but was, in the end, revealed to be computer-incompetent.
