Re:Murder in the interest of public safety...
This is nothing new. Most of the airport security personnel I've met have been courteous, but there are a few who seem to be there for the power trip. They will insist that they are right even when it's obvious they're wrong and/or the law is on your side..
In the late 1990s during a transfer in London, I had to be screened again (this was shortly after some terrorists had tried to slip aboard some bombs by tweaking luggage tags to get them aboard planes they weren't boarding). I used an HP LX200 as my PDA, and I knew its static memory didn't react well to x-rays. It had been corrupted enough to require a reboot with data loss the first time I sent it through an x-ray machine, so I always put it into a separate tray and requested a hand inspection. I requested a hand inspection as usual, and according to the security agent apparently they don't do those in the U.K. I argued with him briefly, explaining that I knew passing it through the x-ray machine could wipe its memory. He insisted that I had to put it through if I wanted to board my flight, at which point I relented. It went through, and the memory got corrupted as expected.
Prior to that, it was usually about film. Anyone who's had a high school science class knows x-rays will expose film. Apparently, many airport security agents never took a high school science course. By law in the U.S., you're allowed to request film be hand-inspected. But sift through the archives of any of the older (film) photography forums, and you'll find countless horror stories about airport security insisting on sending the film through the x-ray machine. The BBC and David Attenborough lost 5 weeks of film shot in Papua New Guinea for the Life of Birds series that way. -

Re:So what's the answer, then? Never?
[...] rights to assume safety in a public place, rights to peaceably assemble without violence of others, the right to leave trains without being harassed, etc
You keep using that word. I do not think it means what you think it means.
I wasn't aware that the "right to assume safety in a public place" was in the Bill of Rights. Damn those activist judges!
You do not have the right to shout "fire" in a crowded theater as the saying goes
Actually, you have every right to shout "fire" in a crowded theater. However, you cannot use "Free Speech" as a defense if you are brought to trial for the deaths of the people being trampled.
In short, I have every right to tell everyone to crowd into a BART station and shut it down. However, if someone is injured because of this, I can be held responsible.
For example, you say that "Overcrowding of a station will very likely cause safety issues." Again, there's that weasel word again, "very likely" (which I missed above). Nothing assured. Perhaps there will be no safety issue whatsoever. But it could happen.
Welcome to the exciting world of pre-crime! If something could happen, we must stop it!

Re:They still don't get it.
You're taking up space in the park and using their resources. You're not just getting something for free, your actions are literally costing Disney money
That's the best you've got--"you're taking up space." You're going to tell me about how I'm breathing oxygen, too, huh?
How am I costing Disney money? Disney is going to operate the park whether I'm there or not, so it's not like they're paying extra for electricity to haul my fat white ass up the side of Space Mountain.
How does me geting a free copy of a CD hurt you?
To drag your "using resources" argument back into the fray, resources were used to write and record that music. Resources were used to create that movie. My purchase of a movie ticket or CD or online download helped defray those costs. Your illegal downloading did not.
So, basically, I'm the one who's paying for the content that you're enjoying. That hurts me.
Or, to put it another way, I have neither the time nor the inclination to explain myself to a man who enjoys the resources that I provide, and then questions the manner in which I provide it. I would rather you just said thank you, and went on your way, Otherwise, I suggest you pick up a guitar and write a song. Either way, I don't give a damn what you think you are entitled to.
-
Re:They still don't get it.
I do agree with you that it's a bit of an "entitled" opinion to have (though a lot of that was given to us by society)
I put it to you, Bucky - isn't this an indictment of our entire American society?
Well, I'm not going to sit here and listen to you badmouth the United States of America! Gentlemen!
-
the gun is good!
You didn't feel abused by this?
I'd much rather watch Sean Connery in a red hooker outfit and slut boots than in a kilt any day! -
Re:Pirates?
No, not POTC - The Pirates by Aardman Animations.
Good stuff, no doubt, but it can hardly compete with The Avengers!

No, it wasn't Gingrich. And certainly high schools have faculty.

Re:There is a point
Good point (even with the Patton reference). However, I think there are other, current, weapons systems that can do the job of the F22 for much cheaper. Also, in this era of deficit and debt, it makes sense to trim back the Defense budget which is still largely based on fighting an enemy which ceased to exist 20 years ago.

Re:How can you see something going into a black ho
Better watch him careful or he might build a spaceship.
:P -
Re:1Gbps
That's the default, aint it?
Truth to be told: that's about half a shark and half an octopus. And, so it seems, one bad movie. -
Re:Excellent!
Not the movie reference I was expecting, I was expecting something more like this one.
-
Re:Article summary author IP
According to my source, that IP traces back to a railroad track. Better call Steven Seagal to investigate.

Wasn't there an 80's movie about this?
Yes there was!

Already Sank
There is already a movie (using the term loosely) about the Titanic II from 2010. Spoiler Alert: Both the ship and the movie sank.

Bad Idea

A version of this was used in a James Bond film
So, I guess Tomorrow Dies after all...

Re:Hybrid system
It'd be like finding a compromise for those who resisted colour film and colour TV by simply switching on or off colour depending on whether the scene in question really made optimal use of it. It'd be totally jarring and terrible.
You've never seen The Notorious Bettie Page or O Brother, Where Art Thou?, have you?

Re:Well that's okay
If you had your way, I assume there would be a swat team outside his home, his assets seized and his ass thrown in jail.
Whatcha wanna bet that the team is being organized right now? As someone else just pointed out, this guy has cost the US movie industry trillions of dollars (by the MPAA's math). Cutting into the profit of big corporations is one of the most serious crimes in the US, you know. The movie industry was founded on the principle that a customer pays for every viewing, and this is just one more story about modern criminals finding ways to deprive the movie industry of the income that it depends on to continue producing the wonderful movies that it has always produced.
(Hmmm
... You might want to wait a while before clicking on that link. The front-page examples as I post this might give you the wrong impression of the US movie industry's quality standards. ;-) -
Re:I thought that was not the hard part....

PR Opportunity
This would be a great chance for the MPAA to stand up and say "We cannot condone pirating videos, but to show our appreciation for our troops, we're going to send 500,000 free DVD movies to the troops". Then in the fine print, it will say "And all 500,000 are copies of Pluto Nash that were gathering dust in a warehouse".
-
Re:That
What the troops REALLY want is to end the killing of innocents & come back home to defend THIS country. And there's only one candidate who is willing to do that. If we really cared about the troops, we would honor their wish.
Look, if you want fantasy presidents, at least pick somebody like Milla Jovovich. She hasn't a chance in hell of getting elected but I'd rather watch her campaign than Mr. Crazy. You really have to admit that her dialog makes more sense than Ron Paul's. Besides, if you polled the troops and asked who they would vote for Paul or Jovovich - who do you think would win?

the assumption that it's the Germans who were the problem is no different than blaming the Jews to begin with.
it's just a different tribalism. -

In the TV Series, Jessica was played by Heather Menzies. Nice to look at also, in a 1970s kind of way.

Pi was good, but more trippy than mathy. I preferred Primer.
In the "What if P=NP" genre, try the short story "Antibodies" by Charles Stross.

Robert Downey, Sr.
I heard Robert Downey (Sr.) from Boogie Bights.
Is that like YP !=MP?
You, Your Problem isn't My Problem?
What, no Boogie Nights fans here?

Re:What could possibly go wrong?
Sean Connery was born in Scotland and is a huge fan thereof.
Ironically, in Highlander, Connery played an Egyptian. The title role went to Christopher Lambert, a French man born in the US.

No, we just need to dupe some hypochondriac into thinking he has a terminal illness. Jumping into a volcano is a fine way to go out in style. Just keep Meg Ryan out of the picture, ok?

Re:Agreed
Nothing but undeveloped, unevolved, barely conscious pond scum, totally convinced of their own superiority, as they scurry about their short pointless lives.
Did anybody else hear this in Edgar's voice as they read it?
-
Not looking forward to this
I'm going to watch it, but as an amateur filmmaker, I'm bracing myself after looking at its imdb listing here: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt2066040/
... The actors are all not real actors. I expect it's going to be silly in a painful way. The idea behind it is great, but, for the major roles at least, you can easily find actors willing to work for free who are worlds more believable than some lab rats trying to make fun of themselves. -
Re:you can save a ton of $There are too many odd remarks in this post to ignore.
.
(1) Posting in chat forums is just soap opera for men. Sports is more like reality TV, or documentary movies -- both of which I like as well.(2) Pretty pointless except for how it makes us feel. When we watch something inspiring, we get inspired. Inspired is good. You should try it some time.
(3)
...and worth the $20*12 differential between straight Internet and triple play packaging for those of us that watch more first run sports than rerun movies/TV series.(4) There are some sports on the broadcast channels but plenty more on non-broadcast channels. Next you will be saying that all we really need to watch is Fox & Disney.
(5) You can also download many of the games off bittorent if you live under a rock. Otherwise you will already know the result of the game, reducing the enjoyment in watching it. How many movies are almost completely unwatchable once you know the outcome? Keyser Soze, I'm looking at you.
