Re:No surprise
I'd agree with amateurish but I'd not agree that it was ugly. I'd say it's not my preference but I could live with it. (I do like it *more* with a bit of theming.)
This isn't as nice as it *could* be but:
http://i.imgur.com/DgpeDjN.pngNote: Most of that stuff is normally full-screen. I made them smaller so that you can see a few examples.
That's the desktop that I'm logged into, via VNC, right now. I'm actually only using a Live USB environment, locally, so there's no need to share that as it is pretty stock.
The top-most (maybe kind of ugly, I've not yet changed the color to match the newly applied background) bar is a "dock" that I added myself simply by making and styling an extra panel, positioning it, and making it only appear when I mouse-over the top-most part of the screen. It's clean, light, and pretty speedy on modern hardware.
That was not with a lot of work and it could still be a bit more aesthetically pleasing but I'm comfortable with it and don't find it ugly. I'm not a Microsoft hater or anything, by the way, I just liked the look of the penguin and the colors were nice enough to be able to use transparency comfortably. I've shown others similar screen-shots and they were happy enough to tell me that it looked surprisingly good to them.
That's an example of something that I don't find to be ugly. I find it utilitarian, easy to look at, easy to navigate, and familiar. Familiarity has a bit important to me. I can (and do) accept change but I prefer familiar - I picked what is familiar because it matches my workflow best.
Would you find that ugly and, if so, why? Beauty is (usually) in the eye of the beholder. Of course, I've fought a Beholder and they're not so very nice!

Re:John Oliver
The USA's gun death rate is far far far higher than places like Canada, France, UK, etc.
I just want to requote this part here, because it's a perfect example of the duplicitousness of the anti-gun rhetoric I see. If you look this fact up, you'll see it is absolutely true - here is an example showing a correlation between gun ownership rates and gun death rates.
But examine the actual words being used, and you quickly see the deceit: Gun death rate.
Not homicide rate. Not violent crime rate. Not suicide rate. Not rape or anything else. Gun death. What, exactly, is a "gun death"?
It's anyone killed by a gun, for any reason - suicide, homicide, justified homicide, accident. It is the equivalent of saying that greater access to guns leads to more deaths by gun, in much the same way that greater access to anything would result in more deaths by that thing. Whether it is swimming pools, cars, kitchen knives - if you have them, someone will eventually die as a result of them, and so you can show and correlate kitchen knives with the kitchen knife death rate quite clearly. But that doesn't mean kitchen knives are turning people into criminals and murderers.
So what do the statistics look like when you look at something more relevant, like overall homicide, suicide, rape, etc. vs gun ownership?
Like thisThere is no correlation. That's why the anti-gun rhetoric focuses on deceiving you with the "gun death rate"; the actual statistics do not back them up on ANY of it.
The spree shootings make up ~0.003% of the total homicide rate. Gun ownership doesn't correlate with homicide, violent crime, rape, or suicide. Rifles are used in less than 5% of overall firearm homicides, with by far the majority coming from handguns. Almost all the firearm homicide is a result of inner city gangs shooting each other in densely populated urban centers; over 60% (in some places more than 80%) of the victims already have a criminal record!
The more I look into all the data I can find, the more I find that guns have absolutely nothing to do with any of the problems the US faces.

Re:land of the the free ?
What is stunningly stupid are people who don't know the first thing about guns attempting to regulate and ban them.
Why, it'd be like people who don't know the first thing about computers, or networks, attempting to regulate and ban them.Nobody who knows a thing or two about guns has anything but contempt for a congressional district representative who starts describing "shoulder things that go up" or a state senator who talks about "ghost guns with 30 caliber clips".
The few anti-gun laws that DO get passed, are full of nonsense like this. These laws are created by clueless morons who quite frankly hurt the entire anti-gun position far more than they have ever helped it.
And for those who still wonder about the actual effects of firearm ownership on violent crime, homicide, suicide and so forth, I invite you to read through the following: https://imgur.com/a/b7HSM

Re:Democracy
Fine let's see what happens to Sweden over the next five to ten years. They have it even worse than even we do in the UK. Most migrants tend to be men, and it's obvious most are coming for welfare.
Here's a look at the average Muslim (research from Pew Forum who are well respected). To summarize, approximately:
2/3rds of muslims believe Sharia should rule
1/2 of muslims believe in death for adultery
1/3rd of muslims believe in death for leaving Islam
How twisted is that? -

Re:Thunderbird is more useful
You *might* find the source somewhere. I've not looked. I probably will before I send this. Opera's been moving to more and more open source (not truly libre but close enough for me - I'm not really picky and don't mind closed source stuff) lately. It takes some digging but you can get and build Opera from source now. Well, in theory. I've not actually tried it.
:/ It shouldn't be too hard but I've not had motivation.Alas, it looks like no...
http://sourcecode.opera.com/I didn't find anything on Github either. Depending on your package manager system (and you *might* be able to install APT and be able to use
.deb files with /some/ success) and whatnot - you might be able to convert it for use. I've had some luck getting alien to work with some RPMs as I am (shh!) an actual fan of Lubuntu and Mint but i far and away prefer Lubuntu. (Something about the primal functionality and speed of LXDE...That and, I have made it beautiful.)And yeah, I swear that it used to have a ton of versions. I think there's Mozilla code in there - doesn't Mozilla require releasing source if they distribute binaries?
:/ I must confess, I do not know Mozilla's licensing. I don't really use many of their products - just Thunderbird. I do leave Firefox installed but I seldom use it - usually it's my "only adblock plus installed, don't care" browser or what I'll fire up if I want to use Tor instead of my VPN for some reason or other.Oh, heh, LXDE... Here:
http://i.imgur.com/CA7kpLi.jpgThe top portion is a "dock" that I made that only shows up when I move the cursor to the top of the screen. I need to set the delay a little longer but I've not managed. I'd show the current implementation (only slightly different) but my desktop is a mess.
Anyhow, back to Opera Mail. It works. It does what it's supposed to do. I never did dig into it to see if it supported GPG or PGP in a reasonable fashion. I used it for a while but wasn't in the habit of signing or encrypting anything. I don't have any complaints about it but, at the same time, I don't have anything to say good about it except that it works. I don't know how they made an email client more boring than, well, an email client but they somehow managed.
I'm a fan of Opera, probably more than is healthy, and I just don't prefer it. I stuck with Opera during the conversion to Chromium's source base. (I didn't use it constantly but I kept it installed.) Today it's fine but it was rough for a while. Even *I* don't like Opera Mail. I can't really say why I don't like it except to say what I've already said. It may not be articulated well. Give it a shot, if you *can* try it out. You might be able to install apt or find a way to convert the
.deb package? I can't say that I've tried. -

No, it didn't re-enter the atmosphere at orbital velocities. 1st stages (and the interstage that stays attached to the 1st stage on F9) generally don't.

What you're saying has merit, and I'm sure that's part of the situation.
However, we still need to bear in mind that we're dealing with a whole lot of Muslims here of which more than two thirds believe Sharia law should rule, or where a third believe people should be killed for leaving Islam, or where almost half believe adulterers should be executed.
These are the kind of people we're not just allowing, but welcoming into our countries.

Very easy if you fly, 3 letter code on ticket
If you get a plane ticket and it's has the 3 letter code SSSS
then you are on list to be pulled aside for special screening. But this watchlist is kinda arbitrary. got a couple cousins that work for TSA, of course it's easy to infiltrate TSA as they hire anyone when there's openings. Even highschool dropouts work for TSA minimum wage.
Anyhow they've fucked with assholes before by tossing them in the list so any future plane tickets they ever purchase will be tagged SSSS
SSSS = the new "SS" hehe
but yea you see this: http://i.imgur.com/Ns42bla.jpg
you are on watchlist.
here's wikipedia article: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/...
But TSA can add you to it to troll you.
I heard one story woman kept snapping at them to hurry, and was being rude. They know everyone hates TSA, they even hate it, but only thing that was hiring at the time.
There's about 7 or 8 in his area and woman just kept tossing insults.
so after she got through, they added her to the SSSS list. So any airport and any airline she will be pulled out of line for special secondary searches.
There are also tales of TSA trolling sports figures, wwe wrestlers and some celebrities, and filmmakers like michael moore/morgan spurlock and adding them to the watch list
:Pmichael moore had a huge bitch session on his blog long ago after finding out he's on the tsa list.
but thats just the TSA watchlist.
there are other lists, NSA/CIA/FBI/ATF/etc... dozens of alphabet pigs

Re:That's silly.
Also cool are the planes that flew a few feet above the water to take advantage of the ground effect. Caspian Sea Monster
I understand they were discontinued because standard jet planes encounter less air resistance at 30,000 feet and actually end up using less fuel.
-
Re:Stupid articleThere is a drawback in using atmospheric oxygen. The vehicle must stay low enough to have something to scoop up. Exactly how low is a messy calculus problem and also requires different structures and heat dissipation techniques.
The two extremes are 1. shoot straight up out of the atmosphere, then straight tangential to the local surface (horizontal) and 2. Stay at sea level until you achieve orbital velocity, then head straight up. The space shuttle accent is closer to (1), popping out of the atmosphere then diving down toward Earth to pick up the horizontal component. And remember, every second you are not in orbit, you have to expend fuel to keep yourself off the ground. SpaceX did this analysis and concluded that while it was interesting and has merit that their current solution was better. Musk also said they might to back to revisit the problem in the future, but that it is a close trade off.
