Re:Production Costs
How many artists would be able to afford to produce quality music without the recording industries willing to take the plunge and invest in them based on a tape of an amateur recording?
This is no longer true. Technology has gotten to the point where it is getting easier and cheaper to self-record with 'proffesional' sound quality.
Besides which, record labels don't just give bands the money to record. It's a loan. The label sets them up with a quality studio and a hot show producer, and the band pays for it out of their royalties.
For a lot less money, anyone can buy an imac and an Mbox (or if you're loaded, a digi002). ProTools (screenshot) is a pretty intuitive program, and it's powerful (all we need now is a free, open source equivilent)!
There is still a good deal of skill involved in recording, but it gives the artisits more control over their music. -

US debut
The new Muramasa has been out in Japan since January. It has had some nice reviews and keeps up well with Pentium-M modells of similar clock speed (see this Japanese review). And it is much cheaper. ws

Fighting Robots in Japanese Anime
Fighting robots makes perfect sense, especially in Japan.
Have a search in google for Shin Gettar, Mazinger Z and Gundam (NOT Gundam Wing, the bastard child of Gundam not shown in Japan) or just have a go at some of the "Super Robot Wars" series of video games. The Japanese had transforming, fighting robots before we had Transformers. The first Gundam Series, made in the late 70's, dealt with robots in wars and even had a protagonist that didn't want to use a robot for war.
Most of the robots I saw at the impress.co.jp website were copied from Anime, especially the yellow Gundam robot and Mazinger Z .
If only Anime of higher quality, that is, not Zoids or Gundam Wing, could reach the Western world without being savaged by poor translation and horrible voice acting.
One can only dream. Or watch Fansubs.

Re:A good start...did you see this video?
I was pretty unimpressed till I saw how cool they are in action
-
Say my name, RoboBitch!I like this video of the authoritative robotic bitchslap, laying the little guy low. Seriously, this is some amazing robotics, even on a small scale. But then again, small robots fighting is always cool
...in Japan! -
Are they autonomous or RC?
I can't read japanese, does anyone know if they are remote controlled or autonomous?
I can't possibly think they're autonomous.
Nice trophy girls!
-
That is freaking awesome
Reminds you of Voltron, no? Gotta love the Japanese.
Robotic combat has always been about rulesets. Even battle bots had a no-projectiles no-flames no-EMP type ruleset. Otherwise, robotic combat in a small enclosed space would be a contest as to whom could fire their 30-mm recoilless rifle first when the contest started:
Announcer: GO (boom)
Announcer: And it looks like team Alphabot managed to fire first, team Betabot is a gigantic smoking hole in the ground! Exciting!
So, I have to say that limiting robots to a humanoid form and blunt impact weapons is a damned fine ruleset idea. Probably the most important part of this ruleset (besides being enourmously entertaining) is that instead of generating research into the best four wheeled dense flip-arm frisbee robot, it will generate research into highly articulated humaniform robots. Which would be, like, way more cool.
And stuff.

Another Intel roadmapThere is another interesting unofficial Intel roadmap. Since Tejas and Jayhawk have been canceled there is just not much new Intel x86 in the server, workstation, and desktop in the next 11 months. The other interesting thing is that Intel's first duel CPUs will first be in Itanium and notebooks. Since heat is something of a problem in current single core server, workstation, and desktop chips, it makes sense that these will not be the first duel-core chips. AMD plans to have high end duel core chips next year.
Also, people are right that in the SPEC results the 3.4 Ghz chip has a 2 MB level-3 cache and the 3.6 Ghz does not.

Here are photos and a translation.
FYI, here is a rough translation about photographs on this page from top to bottom. I think you could find some more interesting stuff from them.
- 1. Flowers that made loudest sound. They explained the one which has large area and dried surface like a cone paper can make good sound.
- 2. A diaphragm with magnet and coil. Unlike normal driver unit, this generates wave only to vibrate plants.
- 3. Inserting flowers into a plastic pipe on the diaphragm to pass vibration throughout plants.
- 4. Putting more flowers, impacting them into the tube and spleading leaves make sound louder.
- 5. You're able to feel plants' fine vibration by touching them.
- 6. Standard model using a diaphragm and an acrylic plastic tube.
- 7,8. This model has an amp, FM tuner, and power source.
- 9. This one is with illuminations.
- 10. Flower vase based model.
- 11. This planter model was using gum tree as speakers.
- 12. Attaching stems to a poll to drive vibration.
- 13,14,15. Monkey dish model. It looks like normal thing, but actually has speaker jacks at the back. It uses a bamboo pipe instead of an acrylic tube to save its appearance.
They also mentioning. "So far, there isn't accurate data about biological effects on plants. But in our experience, it seems vabration revitalizes plants and expands their lives."

.......hmmmm, it seems that even wrapping it in the "URL tag" doesn't remove that space from the filename in the topmost URL. A bug in the new Slashcode maybe? Or is that supposed to happen(???) -
Re:here's the article with listening tests
This player uses Atrac3Plus as its primary format, with support for other Atrac formats. It's default format isn't the one used in this comparison
So the comparison isn't really valid, or up to date.
In fact, Watch Impress a respectable Japanese news site reviewed the Atrac3Plus recently, a more technical review and less subjective than blind listening test. The review was largely positive, with the 256kbps Atrac3plus competiting favorably against WAV (CD-Quality).

Check out this
If you like humanoid robots, you should check out HRP-2.
This robot can apparently, as far as I can tell from these pictures, climb stairs, bend over without falling, get on its hands and knees to crawl under something, and climb into and crawl through a tunnel or shaft.
There is even a video showing it installing a plywood panel to a wall.
Neat stuff. -

AFAIK, the USB toothbrush doesn't require any drivers because it only uses the port for running/recharging.
Honestly, I thought you had to be kidding with that one... -
Re:"...very cool look"
It may actually do well, judging by that brief 2nd shot (picturing the obviously 6-inch-tall woman) as the GUI looks beautiful from that one shot.
I was just about ready to throw down and write my own GUI controller to manage all my media, given the likes of the unspeakably overpriced yet gorgeous interface of Kaleidascape .

The speed is 20Mbps down, 1Mb up, probably
According to this Japanese article reporting on a Mitsubishi R&D event back that I translated back in February, Mitsubishi's dish can download at 20Mbps and 1Mbps.
There's a couple assumptions that go along with my statement though - first of all, this assumes Lufthansa is actually using the Mitsubishi dish for the Connexion service. It also assumes that the actual connection speed is going to be the same as the experimental connection speed, because that's the only figures Mitsubishi provided. Either way, 20Mbps for a plane full of people probably won't be too fast. And I'm sure the pilot won't hesitate to turn it off if there are conditions in which the plane may need power redirected to other systems. -

This is actually much bigger than you think. . . in fact it's much
bigger than Sony or portables
This Sony Connect actually fits into a larger distro called AnyMusic available in Japan that was
created by a cooperation of Japanese consumer electronic firms including Sony. AnyMusic
Sony, Kenwood, Pioneer, Sharp, Onkyo, Marantz, Denon, JVC, and Yamaha
plan on creating consumer electronic devices beyond portables that will
be comptable with the online distro (using Atrac3 and OpenMG X/Label
Gate); also likely the Sony PSP/PS3 will also be compatible as well as
other non-sony devices.
Here are some devices that support the format:
