Re:HUGO
See the "Sad Puppies" story. SF Fandom has diverged into factions: a "Literary" faction (which sometimes refers to itself as 'Trufandom'), which currently pretty much controls the Worldcon, the Hugo Awards, and the Nebula Awards, and a "Spaceships and Rayguns" faction (notionally, the Puppies. There are two major factions in the Puppies as well). It's getting to the point that the two factions have different cons, different preferred publishers, and distinct communities. The split is also fairly ideological, with the Trufen faction trending left, and the Puppy faction trending right
Quick guide:
Cons:
Trufen: WorldCon, Wiscon, ReaderCon
Puppies: DragonCon, LibertyCon, RavenCon, LTUEPublishers:
Trufen: TOR, Orbit
Puppies: Baen, CastaliaAwards:
Trufen: Nebulas, Hugos
Puppies: DragonsThis is not an all-encompassing list. There are also favored blogs and associated communities. . .

Don't use Wikipedia either
Wikipedia administrator GorillaWarfare is part of the BotAlly group that manufactured threats in the name of #Gamergate. They were run by Huawei project manager Victor Soliz aka Vex0rian. GorillaWarfare then voted on the ArbCom case while knowing that the threats were manufactured.
There is a whole gang of corrupt Wikipedia admins run out of the Berkman Klein Center for Internet and Society which is funded by Chinese national Isaac Mao. They are confirmed undisclosed PR operatives who are paid to abuse their admin tools. Any time someone calls out the abuse by this group they get banned and called a right-wing troll.
I recommend using Infogalactic as an alternative. It might be run by a racist but it's still not as fucked up as Wikipedia.

Re:The problem is systemd breaking unexpectedly
PID1 systemd does not handle DNS, the very optional systemd-resolved does that.
Why is there any component of systemd, optional or not, that has anything to do with DNS? It was pitched as a replacement for init, but it has since metastasized and taken over a bunch of other tasks far beyond its original purpose.
"Do one thing and do it well." systemd fails it.

Re:so many statements...
even though AFAIC USD is inherently flawed and failing as money, it is still more stable in intraday trading so far, it doesn't jump up and down by 20% in a day
Then again, there was that one day when the dollar lost nearly 70% of its value.
But that was an intentional act of government. Shifts in the value of bitcoin happen by market forces.
The "price" of bitcoin is the result of people trying to buy and sell it. Naturally, the bigger the market, the less effect any one transaction has on the price. Dollar markets are gigantic, so the value doesn't move a whole lot from day to day. Bitcoin markets are small, just barely big enough to be considered small by the standards of financial professionals. A few million dollars can push the price around a fair bit. And because the markets are small, people don't have the capital to allocate to price points much beyond the expected range, so a breakout can overrun quite a bit before settling back down.
In short, the swings in the price of bitcoin are the result of you being born when you were, and not because bitcoin has any sort of inherent instability. If you had been born a few decades later, either you'd see a much larger and more stable bitcoin market, or you'd only ever see the name in the history books.
Ethereum seems to be different, by the way. I haven't been following it closely, but it isn't just another Dogecoin or other clone-of-bitcoin-with-different-magic like used to pop up so often. It is trying to do something completely different, and in my opinion, it is far too early to tell if it will succeed in doing so, or for that matter, if that different thing is a good idea or not. There have been problems encountered along the way, to be sure.
How much of the interest in Ethereum is because it is special, and how much is because it is new(er) - I have no idea.

Re:Technology moves forward
You probably meant radial, not rotary, as a rotary engine would be damn near impossible to fit into a car since the whole thing's spinning around. As for radial engines in road-going vehicles, that's already been done. There have even been radial-engined motorcycles built.

Re:A homemade 6809
I'm sure you can still find instructions somewhere, and I know that several DIY / wire wrapped computers are extensively photographed online.
You should read Hackers , particularly part 2, for the state of "the scene" in the late 70s. People were forming clubs and starting magazines to pass around schematics and software. By the mid-70s, you could buy proper computers, either in kit form or fully assembled. Making PCBs at home was getting practical too, but wire wrap was still preferred for prototyping.

.running against an established Congressman (Stephen Lynch) who has been in Congress for 16 years, who has routinely been winning elections by 70%+ for years.Wu's only real "in" here, is that Lynch is considered moderate. No idea on how that particular congressional district trends. .
.Given that she's trying to knock off a popular incumbent in the primary who's done nothing to hurt his chances for re-election over the years, this was a long shot under the best of circumstances. Her only possible means of attack is to argue that Lynch is not liberal enough, which seems like a low percentage move to me. Lynch once said that being "least liberal" member of the House from Massachusetts is a bit like being the slowest Kenyan in the marathon. You're still a lot more liberal/fast than most of the others. Are there really all that many voters who rank transgender issues as their number 1 above all else concern? Probably not.
Geez. Newt Gingrich got savagely and unfairly criticized in 2012 for suggesting that putting a permanent base on the moon was a good idea and that was a pretty rational idea that I'm sure a decent number of Slashdotters would support. I really have question Wu's fitness for office for simply lacking the self-awareness to know that what she said makes her sound like a crackpot. "Vote for me. I'm crazy and I only care about edge issues that don't effect the vast majority of the district." Yes, that sounds like a good plan - not. -

Re:Judge should learn the law
Not even close dude.
Although all U.S. citizens are also U.S. nationals, the reverse is not true. As specified in 8 U.S.C. 1408, a person whose only connection to the U.S. is through birth in an outlying possession (which is defined in 8 U.S.C. 1101 as American Samoa and Swains Island (which is administered as part of American Samoa)), or through descent from a person so born, acquires U.S. nationality but not U.S. citizenship. This was formerly the case in only four other current or former U.S. overseas possessions.[31]

Re: eeeeeee
Ok kids, if you want to see how a peabrain concedes that he has no argument, scroll up and read serviscope's post a couple of times until you become familiar with the signs. The very short version is a lot of huffing and puffing, and absolutely no substance.
First, he starts with "Nuh uh", then he twists my words into a pretzel, then he continues to insist on something that everyone can plainly see is false. Then it gets really good: he links to a blogger force-fitting "facts", some real and some false, through a set of vague checkboxes, none of which have anything to do with actual fascism, and most of which could be fit to just about anyone famous.
And then, Trump is literally Hitler why? Because he is directing the publication of crimes weekly. WEEKLY, the bastard! I mean that is straight out of Mein Kampf. Everyone knows that free countries publish their crime stats quarterly.
And to top it off, he repeats his denial of the obvious and apparent fascism that we all watched on TV and youtube, because that was "other things that other people did". (See notes on fascism below)
His conclusion is that no rational being can disagree with him. Now, that just seems like a typical dehumanizing tactic - it is a lot easier to punch a guy on the street if he isn't human, or if you have defined him as evil.
Scott Adams has something to say about this topic too. I think it is well worth the read.
-----
Apparently to a peabrain, fascism is something that one man does, and not a political movement. After all, the big problem in Italy was Benito himself, and not the hordes of violent thugs, or "Fascist Party" that chose him as their leader.
If any reader has any doubt about what we are seeing in this country these days, please go look up fascism in your favorite encyclopedia and compare notes. Here is one at random: "Fascists view World War I as having made liberal democracy obsolete". Skipping the chronology, who considers democracy obsolete? In other words, who has been rioting and calling to throw out an election they didn't win?

Re:We could never trust government
At McCarthyism.
Replace this one with "At government education." McCarthy was completely and totally vindicated by the Venona files, and also by KGB files after the breakup of the Soviet Union. This was more than 20 years ago, and for some reason government schools are still teaching that he was a bad guy chasing after imaginary witches.
Your other examples are mixed, but this one is beyond doubt.

Re:I think civility is going to go out the window
From https://infogalactic.com/info/Riot:
A riot is a form of civil disorder commonly characterized by a group lashing out in a violent public disturbance against authority, property or people. Riots typically involve vandalism and the destruction of property, public or private. The property targeted varies depending on the riot and the inclinations of those involved. Targets can include shops, cars, restaurants, state-owned institutions, and religious buildings.
To answer your question: no, tweeting and speaking are not riots.
So... if Trump's comments, which lead to death threats, don't classify as race rioting... How exactly do Obama's count?

Re:What I love
You should check out the gamergate page. Not only have dozens of editors been banned for edit warring, but the entire thing is a complete mess where even factual information is removed because it's contrary to the people who are pushing a narrative.[...] It's pretty sad when "know your meme" and "encyclopedia dramatica" have more factual articles.
Direct links for the lazy:
That's the same article where a dozen hardcore feminists were banned for edit warring,
Oops, you believed the Guardian. It's a common mistake. What actually happened was that one feminist editor Ryulong was banned after he was caught begging for money from the activist group GamerGhazi which was formed by Reddit's SRS clique to suppress the spread of information about Gamergate. That's like asking for money from the Trump campaign after changing the name of Hillary Clinton to "Lying Hillary." They were still going to let him off the hook but Ryulong acted like a total ass on the last few days of the arbitration case so one or two of the votes flipped.
Every other hardcore feminist editor got away with it. Then the admins took vengeance for their friend Ryulong by instantly banning anybody who reported the misbehavior of any of the hardcore feminist editors in any other area of the wiki. They also took out a bunch of the Japanese editors who tried to correct Ryulong's misspellings where this white fanboy had made himself Wikipedia's final judge of Japanese spelling and grammar and had previously banned anyone who disagreed with him. When Gamaliel got elected to the Arbitration Committee a year later, ArbCom quickly banned two prominent editors who had presented evidence against Gamaliel during the Gamergate case, Cla68 and The Devil's Advocate, without presenting any justification for either ban. It was straight out of Kafka.
Some people still mistakenly think that the adults will take charge if you stay calm and reasonable and don't break the rules. That has been tried and results in a quick and permanent ban. Explaining your own position is "soapboxing" and "beating a dead horse" and is grounds for a ban. Having strong sources to support your position makes you a "POV-pusher" who is "not here to build the encyclopedia", which justifies a permanent ban. Presenting evidence of rulebreaking by the admins is "trolling" and "sockpuppetry" and merits an instant ban, and they are likely to remove your comments and insult you on the way out. If you try to appeal your ban on the grounds that you never broke any policy, your appeal will be rejected and you are likely to have your talk page access revoked. You are required to confess to sins you have not committed and proclaim that the admins are correct in policy when they are not. The place is run by completely irrational people who belong in an insane asylum.

The censorship treadmill is moving
They barely covered a couple of items of evidence in that.
Now, with as many connections as have been found, I'm sure there are more than a few bogus ones. The problem is that there's a ton of them. Now, it's very possible that it's all smoke and no fire, the problem is that you can't fairly decide that without the painful task of going through every little thing, so declaring "no, that's wrong" without actually touching most of the evidence is far less convincing to anyone who has looked into it than one might hope.
It doesn't help that Reddit, Twitter & Wikipedia all seem to want to make it simply disappear, an ironic stance as they were once the place for suppressed ideas to go. A trend that makes me wonder if we'll see a "censorship treadmill" like the euphamism treadmill, wherein new sites are constantly born to take over those that succumb to censorship at the hands of their owners.
Anyhow, for anyone keeping tabs:

The Streisand Effect has been triggered
Well, I still haven't seen any smoking guns just yet, only a lot of strange things that point in a bad direction or to bad taste in art & friends. I don't know too many Democrats these days eager to retain friendships with Republicans, let alone those who are also convicted child molesters, but it's not exactly illegal either. There's nothing illegal about saying that "traffic is really warm and really weird in light of Hastert" but people who have seen enough strange uses of language regarding what they suspect are codewords could read that in a weird way.
But by banning pizzagate, they've only made it better known. They didn't even manage to shut it down, it
/r/pizzagate lives on Voat now as /v/pizzagate. Twitter users outraged that they did nothing about pedo pics someone allegedly pointed out on twitter gab.ai. Wikipedia censors all but a pitiful mention of it, so it's documented on Infogalactic. There are still the usual problems with idiots who fake something to troll the community, though, but they're working on moderating that out. For example, I know at least one of the claims of steganography in the images appeared to be fake. There certainly wasn't any ZIP file marker in the image I found on Wikileaks, though it wasn't clear if you were supposed to use some steganography program first.

Good timing
Just as hordes of Democrats are rioting in the streets in a mass temper tantrum over losing the election; as new anti-Trump violence is getting documented just about every day; as new pro-Trump hoax-violence is exposed nearly every day - slashdot steps up to "ask" about the end of anonymity.
I wonder if Brendan Eich has an opinion on anonymity.

Re:have to prove damage
Jerry Pournelle has been saying this for years.
Can you imagine how the world would be different if in 2003, instead of invading Iraq, we had spent that money on nuclear power?
First a few hundred billion to design and develop a standard power plant, one that was pre-approved and could be deployed nearly anywhere for about a billion dollars each. Then about 100 of them. Then, Fischer-Tropsch plants to turn the cheap electricity into cheap fuel.
I'd throw a billion at Bussard's group for inertial electrostatic containment fusion research too.

Re:WE FAILED!!
They can't, for two reasons. The first is that their message is utter garbage to the core, and has been ever since Marx wrote it. This was recognized instantly by, among others, Bastiat, who wrote an excellent rebuttal which shouldn't take anyone more than an hour or so to read. The translation from economic terms to cultural terms by the Frankfurt School didn't make it any better.
The second is that they don't possess the equipment necessary for thinking.
And no, I don't mean brains. I mean introspection, self awareness, curiosity, etc. Well, maybe I do mean brains too, a little bit. The people "protesting" the election results, to pick one example, probably aren't ditching their local Mensa meetings to be there.

Re:not in N.C.
I applaud you sir! You have, in your mind, defined the problem so narrowly that you are only willing to see evidence that cannot possibly exist. You must've been paying attention in Gaslighting 101.
I assure you that only diehard fanatics like yourself obsess over whatever activity you specifically define as "voter fraud". Most of us humans, however, are gravely concerned about honest and fair elections, and the threats are many, including voter fraud, election fraud, and whatever other forms of fraud could possibly interfere.
Florida (Note that the response to this was to send out 173,000 more blank ballots.
Anyone that cares to spend a little time searching can probably find similar stories from nearly any state. Oh, and of course the Project Veritas Action videos show people discussing the mechanics of successful fraud, clearly from a position of personal knowledge.
Keep in mind that a lot of this fraud is very hard to prove. In nearly every story, the people involved protest their innocence. Bank robbers caught in the act tend to do that too, of course, as do innocent people. A year from now, we'll know the extent of the fraud that was caught and prosecuted, and maybe have an idea of the fraud that was caught, but not prosecuted, and absolutely no idea how much fraud was not caught.

It is, in fact, the very worst kind of bigotry, and it has a name; institutional racism.
People who remember when Democrats were lynching blacks in the south might disagree about which form of racism or bigotry is the worst.
Also, I note that nimbius didn't describe any racism, he just says it was there. There are reasons other than "brown people" why someone might not get promoted.
