Re:eight authoritarian countriesThe issue is NOT: Harm innocent civilians or do not harm innocent civilians?
The issue is: Choose a small war now (when the democracies' odds are good, and we can wage it on our OWN terms) or join a HUGE war later (when the democracies' odds are poorer, and tyrants and terrorists dictate the terms).
The option of peace is an illusion. We live in a world of war. The best we can do is manage the war. It's a strategy game. You take out the madmen with WMD in small wars to prevent them from waging big wars.
We've already made the mistake once in 1991. We backed off of completing the job because we thought the costs were too high, even though we knew Saddam was amassing WMD. Now, 12 years later, the threat is much greater, and the costs also may be much greater. We dare not procrastinate any longer! Iraq is working the black market to get nukes from China, North Korea, or Russia. You think casualties are going to be high if we act now? If we continue to postpone, delay, "give {peace, inspections, diplomacy} a chance" (i.e., give Saddam a chance - to develop nuclear weapons), you ain't seen nothin' yet!
If it was wrong for the US to sit idle while the Nazi threat was growing, it is wrong to sit idle while Saddam's regime is growing. Saddam supports Al Qaeda and other terrorist groups. Heck, he is a terrorist! When you see a threat growing, you have to nip it in the bud. It is irresponsible for us to continue to procrastinate. The sooner we act, the better it will be for the whole world -- except for Saddam. He has been given many, many chances to ameliorate the situation, but he has chosen his fate.
The Iraqi civilians have more to benefit as a result of US/UK action than ANY OTHER party. We come not to conquer, but to liberate. Unfortunately, Saddam has put an evil face on his country. This war will be waged against his government, not the Iraqi civilians. Many innocent people will be killed, but the struggle to wrestle freedom from tyranny always results in bloodshed of the innocent. Freedom isn't free. Blood is the price of liberty.

One reason is activists
As this article points out, one reason big drug companies are stepping away from AIDS drug innovation, at least, is because of AIDS activists and other anticorporate do-gooders. By forcing companies to practically give away their drugs to the third world, these misguided crusaders have removed all incentive from Big Medicine to research new AIDS drugs. Any new drug development requires an immense amount of R&D capital before a cent of profit can be made; and no intelligent CEO is going to throw billions at a product that'll wind up being either given away or copied illegally by third-world manufacturers.

And still they dance....One year later, a barbaric, evil culture still wants to celebrate.
Dancing in the streets a year ago wasn't enough for the only culture in the entire history of mankind that publicly celebrates mass murder. They want to do it again a year later.

Re:Cowardly
Kindly name a country that can field a force capable of taking on either the Air Force or the Navy. heck, we can limit it to just one Navy carrier group.
During a 1999 exercise in the Negev Desert, the Israeli Air Force (flying F-16s) pummelled an American force made up of US Navy F/A-18s and F-14s. You can find a short write-up on the exercise here.

Re:Capitalist
There are innumerable variations of this quote, which is attributed to Lenin.
- When it comes time to hang the capitalists they will compete with each other to sell us the rope at a lower price.
- The capitalists will sell us the rope by which we hang them
- Greedy capitalists will sell us the rope by which we will hang them
- If we were to announce today that we intend to hang all capitalists tomorrow, they would trip over each other trying to sell us the rope.
- When Communism finally hangs Capitalism, a Capitalist will sell us the rope
- A capitalist would sell the rope to his own hangman."
- Western business men will sell us the rope with which to hang them.
Unfortunately, no source for these quotations has ever been found in Lenin's collected works.
It may have been fabricated originally by the John Birch Society 40 years ago as part of their anti-Communist propaganda.
Curiously, Lenin actually said some things the John Birch Society might agree with: "While the State exists there can be no freedom; when there is freedom there will be no State."

Here's some HATE SPEECH, this would be banned.
Slavery is being and has been practiced in Israel by jews for several decades. The American Jewry, who dominate the mass media in the United States, have been actively suppressing this unpleasant truth with economic, political and social controls. Take the hypocrite Steven Spielberg and his propoganda piece "Amistad" for example, when do you think he's going to speak out about the slave trade in Israel? Answer: Never

Re:Why I am not against this
See the Jerusalem Post. The Mohammed Atta who committed a bus bombing in '86 is a different person from the one who was involved in the WTC attack. People sometimes have the same names, and Mohammed is not exactly a rare name among Muslims. Furthermore, he didn't get released because of US arm twisting; he got released due to the Israeli legal system.
Had we abused Mr. Atta's rights, it would hurt us; discriminating against Arabs because they were Arabic does not the cause of righteousness make. -
Re:To Those Who Are Screaming For VengeanceSecond, I'd bet you that some people -- some idiots -- did smirk and clap when the plane was shot down. Of course, the vast majority would never do anything that awful--just like in Palestine, where the vast majority did not celebrate. Don't believe everything you see on CNN.
Okay, if we can't believe everything seen on CNN, what about
Also, don't forget the fact that some Palestinians kidnapped one of the cameramen that recorded the cheering, and the Palestinian Authority couldn't guarantee his safety if the footage was broadcast. Heard this on both The Jerusalem Post and also corroborated on NPR. Can't find a link to the stories, though.

Re:It's not asbestos either
A few days after the attacks, I read an interview on either the jeruslaem post or haaretz daily's websites with an architect who had been one of the lead designers for the WTC towers. He compared the construction of skyscrapers in the US (steel frame) and Israel (reinforced concrete).
Architects know steel is more vulnerable to damage by fire than concrete. So the WTC structure was encased in concrete to provide additional time to evacuate the building. IIRC, he stated that they did not expect the building to survive a fire such as the one following the crashes, but to survive long enough to evacuate following impact of a smaller aircraft (B-707, I believe). Designing a building to be "safe" against all threats is impractical - you have to make a tradeoff at some point.
As to why Israelis use concrete and not steel, it's a matter of cost. Reinforced concrete is far cheaper in Israel than structural steel. In the US, lower costs for steel and resulting faster construction times overall make steel a better choice.

Re:Interesting
Yeah but look at what else the Mossad has said... Terrorists working in America? Yeah, right. Move right along, Israel.
-
Re:Regarding civil liberties
This is why. Seriously, Israel provides the US with SO much intelligence it is unreal. That is why we pay Israel (also for the Mossad ops: Bombing Iraqi Nuclear plant, liberating the Suez canal).
-
Re:I'm ashamed to say it, but I agree with RMS
I'll second that emotion.
It would be particularly unsettling if the same government that is now demanding sweeping domestic spying capabilities also ignored good evidence that a major terrorist attack was coming via the airlines to American soil, wouldn't it? It might be enough to make you wonder just what they want the increased surveillance powers for if they intentionally ignore the critical intelligence they're already getting from sigint and allied spy networks.
Did administration officials receive advance knowledge of attacks with frightening indifference ?
Did administration officials smother a friendly, timely warning with shocking obtuse ness
Did adminstration officials shitcan a timely bipartisan report on America's vulnerabilty to airborne terror because it did not suit their political agenda of pressing for utterly irrelevant Buck Rogers style intercontinental missile defense?
These people simply do not deserve to be trusted with broader powers. Take your pick of reasons to distrust them, they're all equally valid, probably. We should be considering instead how to limit the further damage they can do of granting them a permanent, legislated hold on what should be only "National State of Emergency" wartime powers to be granted in the last resort in a fight against a dangerous foe like Nazi Germany/ Kaisarean Germany before that or the Confederacy even earlier. -
Israeli army recruiting stations in U.S. Illegal? The Jerusalem Post reported in July that Israel was opening recruiting stations in the United States.
That's of questionable legality. See 18 USC 959, which prohibits recruiting by foreign armies in the United States.

Palestinians celebrating
Reporters in Palestinian areas have been threatened that their lives may be in danger if they publicize pictures of palestinians celebrating the WTC and Pentagon disasters. This is similar to threats which Italian reporters received when they documented the lyniching of Israelis in ramalla by a palestinian mob a few months ago.
Here's a report about it from AP (you can find more on this at The Jerusalem Post.
You can see a picture of this at my page
Arafat horrified; Palestinians celebrating
By Mohammed Daraghmeh, The Associated PressNABLUS, West Bank (AP) - Thousands of Palestinians celebrated toiday's terror attacks in the United States, chanting "God is Great" and distributing candy to passers-by, even as their leader, Yasser Arafat, said he was horrified.
The US government has become increasingly unpopular in the West Bank and Gaza Strip in the past year of Israeli-Palestinian fighting, with many Palestinians accusing Washington of siding with Israel.
In the West Bank town of Nablus, about 3,000 people poured into the street shortly after the attacks on the World Trade Center in New York and government targets in Washington.
Demonstrators distributed candy in a traditional gesture of celebration. Several Palestinian gunmen shot in the air, while other marchers carried Palestinian flags.
Nawal Abdel Fatah, 48, wearing a long black dress, threw sweets in the air, saying she was happy because "America is the head of the snake, America always stands by Israel in its war against us."
Her daughter Maysoon, 22, said she hoped the next attack would be launched against Tel Aviv.
In traditionally Arab eastern Jerusalem, there was a smaller gathering of about two dozen people, many of them young children led in chants by adults. Some drivers passing the scene honked their horns and flashed victory signs from their windows.

Jerusalem post article
(16:45) BBC: Palestinian group says responsible for WTC attack
This Jerusalem post article says.
basically questions whether the DFLP is responsible. -
WTC holds 500,000
I'm not sure why this has been overlooked in the media, but the combined occupancy of both towers is 1/2 million. This is according to the architect of the buildings in a Jerusalem Post interview . I hope the estimates of 50,000 casualties hold up.
-
Palestinians celebrate
Take a look at the pictures on the Jerusalem Post site:
"Reports are indicating residents of eastern Jerusalem, the West Bank, and southern Lebanon are celebrating the mass terror attacks in the United States at this time".
"Dozens of Palestinian youths have taken to the streets and are distributing candies on a main thoroughfare passing through eastern Jerusalem". -
Supporting EvidenceSince my original post was immediately modded to -1 by biased moderators, I thought I'd post again to provide some links to further information.
Israel/Occupied Territories: Israel shows reckless disregard for human life
ISRAEL AND THE OCCUPIED TERRITORIES: UNITED NATIONS CALLS FOR HALT TO TORTURE

ISRAEL: Human Rights Abuses Affecting Trafficked Women in Isreal's Sex Industry
An article on slave trafficking in Israel, from the Jerusalem Post

If zionist moderators once again try to silence me, well, I tried.
I could speculate endlessly about why the US is so intent on supporting Israel, and why the US ignores Israeli human rights abuses that would shame even North Korea. But, I really don't know. I am truly puzzled. -
The definitive discussion
For the definitive discussion of the right to privacy, see Hanna Arendt's The Human Condition and her distinction between public and private life.
Greatly simplifying her argument, she says that the essence of totalitarianism is the intrusion of the state into the private life of the citizen, in effect abolishing the distinction between public and private. Without a private sphere, there can be no freedom.
Until recently, privacy was protected by mechanical considerations. Aside from outright intrusions by the state, the effort to collect and distribute private information was so expensive that it was impractical.
The digital nature of data now reduces those mechanical barriers that protected privacy so that things in the past that were de facto private now are de facto public. The main threat to privacy is not the state but the irresponsible use of technology. To take just one example, tapping a telephone line was once a complicated process. Now, using readily available scanners, tapping a cell phone or a cordless phone is cheap and easy.
One solution is a new, more precise legal definition of what is private with specified legal sanctions. The effect of this law would permit someone whose private information was revealed or used without his permission to sue for damages. It would also open those who used private information without explicit permission open to criminal charges.
In effect, personal information becomes private property and people can post "No Trespassing" signs on their lives, enforceable by law.

You, too, can bend spoonsIn an article in the Jerusalem Post , Geller recommends The Idiot's Guide to Being Psychic:
Page 294 of the Guide to Being Psychic reveals the secret of spoon-bending, which is a great relief to me since it means other people can take over the onerous duties of mangling the planet's cutlery. One accurate observation suggests novice spoonbenders will have better success when the audience is on their side. Positive, open minds are great for psychokinesis - negative, skeptical minds are not.
Yes, so you, too, can be Uri Geller. In fact, it'll actually be a relief to him. Ah, lucky guy. These books are crammed with easy-to-use features, packed into short spurts of text and peppered with quotes, asides and definitions.
I dunno. Perhaps the wierdest part of all this is that Uri Geller is writing book reviews. (In the article, he also reviews The man who invented the 20th century (Nikola Telsa), and tries to discredit Prof. Richard Dawkin's book Unweaving the rainbow, because that book explains why Geller is a fraud.)
