Re:Good.
I can't videoconference, edit videos, make mp3s, play video games or make a slideshow in Linux. How about a couple of kernel devs drop off and help Linux go the last mile.
Other than video conferencing (haven't tried), my wife and 13 year old son can do everything on your list (using SuSE, Fedora or Ubuntu).
Shouldn't you be posting questions to http://www.linuxquestions.org/ or http://www.justlinux.com/ ?
You wont get a RTFM response.
Slashdot isn't a Linux help forum.

Look no furthur than Solaris tar ...
Solaris tar sucks. It can't handle long filenames and renames them to some weird looking thing that reminds me of Progra~1 fugly-ness. Just what the doctor ordered a piece of backup software to do. A few random samples of people on the net complaining about Solaris tar:

Awesome!!!
I've cursed and cursed that the friggin right click doesn't lower the window.
I've literally been complaining about this crap for over 5 years.

BTW. I could have sworn that that a month after last time when we had this flame war one of the gnome guys created a patch to make it configurable. At the time, I wasn't using Gnome regularly so I didn't save it and now I can't find it anymore.
Here's what I want.
1) The top of the window should be next to an edge so I can click on it easily.
2) Right click should lower it. Currently middle click works but I really think the right click is less awkward.
I've got maybe 50-70 windows open at a time and I need to be able to cycle through them as fast as possible. I need to have Fitz law working for me.
3) The gnome terminal needs to stop sucking. I've got a frigging 3Ghz computer with 1G of RAM and a top of the line graphics card. Why does gnome terminal slow my whole box down when it's just scrolling ascii? Also why does it take a second for me to highlight text in gnome terminal? When I don't disable the feature where you can double click to select a word that takes up to five seconds...
Sorry I guess the terminal thing wasn't really related. I got on a rant and couldn't stop. But seriously, fix the blasted right click to lower stuff at least. Even if it takes a command line utility to customize it that's fine. -

Re:What did he have to write to get help though?
but yeah, it made for truly surreal reading. Linux users. Being. Helpful.
Terve, Unski.
I don't know if you're being sarcastic (probably so). But if you think that's surreal, then check this out:

Re:Step 2: Smack Otto
Linux isn't an entity with one goal, it's not a corporation with a guiding mission. It doesn't want to be superior, although some beleive certain things it does, it does better than any other alternative.
And look at server statistics, you'll see something other than 1% maketshare, all without a unified marketing department!
Since when does Microsoft listen?
And is my "tough talk" really the reason you've stayed away from linux? When you post questions to a linux help board, did people really flame you? Or did you never get to that step? I've never had a hostile response to a simple inquiry, (but then again thats not a reliable statistic), in fact the reponses have been patient, helpful and speedy.
There are a volumes of sites DEDICATED to answering the most basic beginner questions, with thousands of Linux users waiting to help you! Help me, help you!

If you can post a basic question and get a negative response, I'll eat my shirt. -
Re:Buy an nvidia card
Well, some of us aren't Free freaks or anything like that, we just like to use free (as in beer) software that is stable and not laden with spyware/nagware/etc. For someone who is planning on not using Windows (even for gaming), reading the Hardware HOWTO at tldp.org, checking various discussion forums and other resources, and then buying a nVidia card based on the number of questions/problems/complaints from other users would be the smart thing to do.

Re:Move along, nothing to see here
Yes, I've been using Linux for a while, but not really that long. When I started using it (3 years ago) I was overwhelmed by the documentation and had a hard time trying to figure out where to start.
Not much different then when I first loaded up Windows3.1 10 years earlier.
Or when I first turned on my Commodore64 and didn't know how to start a program (load "*",8,1)
Or when I first used an Apple IIe with my first experiance with a 5 1/4" Floppy Disk
Or when I first turned on the CommodorePET wondering how to load the program from the cassette tape
Any first time computer user is going to be confused without documentation, or someone to help them. Today there are so many ways to get help if you are trying to learn something, beyond documentation.
Newgroups, IRC, forums, email, user groups, books...
If you can't find help with using a computer these days, it's not because it is not there but because people are not looking.
As for MSOffice being UI-centric...it's a feature filled UI with endless amounts of options, tools and toys. Why is there a graphic editor built in, i do not know
If you want to go to a Linux newbie friendly site, I suggest JustLinux formally known as LinuxNewbie.org
The only time newbies are smacked down there is when they have the attatude of "Help me and help me NOW DAMMIT!!" otherwise they are treated as equals and helped. -
Re:Which FreeBSD to install??
I really can't help you much because I've never delt with FreeBSD. Try going to JustLinux and asking there. You probably won't find help here.
I'll give my left pinky if you don't find help there. -

Sure, multipse X sessions are easy! Here's a very nice tutorial on how to do that.

NFSI know that this is going to be the most common answer, but just go with NFS. It's not the most secure option around, but obviously the simplest to implement and the best documented.

Howto #1
Howto #2If you find yourself needing help, try asking people at Just Linux forums, or trying the NFS mailing list.

Or for free :)Or you could try some free web resources aimed at the beginner (without a single RTFM or newbie insult in sight):
NewToLinux - with excellent tutorials that guide you through the basics step by step
JustLinux - with forums to ask all those annoying questions, and again not get insultedThough buying a book is usually also a good idea, especially for when you can't access the web

Where Linux Employers PostSince I am an employer seeking Linux staff, I thought I'd provide my input. I agree with much of the advise in the article.
However, at the end they recomend four job portals: Linux.com, Linux Today, User Friendly's GeekFinder and Linux.org.au. I agree with the first two, and (since I'm in North America) have no valid opinion on Linux.org.au.
The problem with Geek Finder is that it is really just a front for Dice.com. Unlike all the other resources mentioned, dice.com charges employers for listings, instead of being community-based and advertiser-supported.
Instead, I would recomend the following additional job portals, where I have actually posted jobs:
- Superexpert.com: not great, but it does host linux jobs.
- JustLinux: a smaller Linux portal, with a nice jobs page.
- Free Software Jobs Page: This is the GNU jobs page. It is strictly for free software jobs, so only hard-core open source jobs get posted there.

Re:Reliability
Being a young person, I've moved (and foresee moving) often (college, work, etc) and it is difficult to maintain an email address. (It's difficult to switch 40 friends and relatives every few months.) So I just toughed it out and suffered through Hotmail. (It was fine before they were bought by you-know-who.)
Use an email forwarding service, like www.mail.com. They have many free addresses available, as well as "premium" addresses (click here to view other services powered by Mail.com). I switch free email providers all the time (I use POP3, not web-based email, and it's a lot harder to find free POP3 accounts). I just log in to Mail.com and update my forwarding address when it changes. When someone sends me mail, it is forwarded to my real address in about 5 seconds.
If you like Linux, www.justlinux.com will also give you email forwarding (@linuxfan.com, @linuxfreak.com, @penguinpowered.com).
Outlook Express integration of Hotmail is one of the major things keeping me with Win95 and IE5 (don't laugh, it's useful!).
What happened to Microsoft supporting open standards? Maybe you should write to them and ask where you can download their protocol. :)
