Parkitect Theme Park Simulation Game!
- Intro:
"Parkitect is a simulation game where you get to build a successful theme park! Design roller coasters, install shops and thrill rides, and top it all off with incredible scenery and dynamic landscapes. Management is key: you'll have to look after employees, resources, and park infrastructure. Fail at that and face the consequences! Unhappy cashiers might annoy guests, unhappy custodians will leave your park a mess, and unhappy ride maintenance teams will leave your guests a mess."

Re:Most of the failures never would've made it.
Indeed.
Kickstarter recently(ish) stopped screening projects, so now there are even more completely ridiculous projects with no hope of producing anything viable.
Here's a really sad one from a guy who clearly has a mental disability: https://www.kickstarter.com/pr...

There is no "FarmBot"
There is no "FarmBot". There is only a Kickstarter project to start a wiki to create a social network for talking about farming-related subjects, parhaps including talking about a FarmBot.

This might be better...
This one looks like it's more complete (includes headset)... plus, it seems to be cheaper.
Not sure about how "open" it is, though. -
Two-factor authentication solves it.
The problem is already solved, it just needs to be more widely implemented. Secondary authentication by phone (i.e. receiving an SMS) ensures that no one can get into my Gmail account if they happen to have my password. If my phone gets stolen, I'm going to know to take action quite soon, and they still have to get past the lock screen (though this does raise a good argument for making sure calls/SMS are not be answerable/readable without unlocking the device). Regardless, it would solve 99.99% of the problem.
Another idea I could see catching on is some kind of token ring, like a mix of an NFC ring and those RSA SecureIDs that spit out a random 6-digit code every minute to authenticate, but instead of the user having to type in the code, they just tap their phone/palmrest/screen with the ring. Assuming the rings are available in a few varieties for less than $10, I think most people would opt to use one if it meant avoiding annoying secondary security questions and having to keep a list of impossible to remember passwords (which they still have to change because sites get compromised). It avoids biometric requirements and has the possibility for anonymity (buy a ring at the supermarket, link it to any email account). -
Re:Yeah right...
It is on the very verge of release now. It's been shown in several US cities and is now invading Canada. I'm a backer of the Kickstarter campaign to get it released: https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/elizabethkarr/radio-free-albemuth-theatrical-release/posts/ . Hopefully the DVDs and Blu-rays will not be too long away and I'm waiting for a UK release so that I can get my hands on a legit copy.

Re:This isn't going to do much
That was part of the stretch goals. The initial 1 million was to bring an updated version of the show to the web. At 5 million, they wanted to bring it to all platforms, including mobile devices, video game consoles and set top boxes too.

Re:pnysically impossible
Even ignoring where they get their power from, they claim in 1 second rope mode it uses an average of 36 microamps of current, and can store enough energy to run 18 days without any charging source. That works out to 55 coulombs of charge... that seems like a lot of charge to store in something that is not a battery (and even if using a different voltage to store it, you don't gain much in terms of volume... either it is a 55 F super-capacitor at 1 V, or a 140 mF cap at 400 V, neither of which is as small and flat as their tag thing. That works out to about 15 mAh, which is getting kind of high even for a battery in that size (unless the tag thing is a lot thicker than it looks to me).
-
Re:Thanks for the tip!
You're saying its a scam, what's your argument?
They claim in their technical brief that the energy harvestable from a typical home wi-fi is 10dBm.
This is off by at least 3 orders of magnitude (i.e. they claim at least 1000 times more than is actually available).
-
Re:Thanks for the tip!
What? Where? You're saying its a scam, what's your argument?..
I said it has glaring red flags. You don't even have to be technically savvy to see them. If you can't see them in the "bio" post from "Dr. McArthur", then you might want to work on your critical analysis skills.

Re:Thanks for the tip!
Why are you so against Levar Burton?

If there's one worthy kickstarter out there, it's this one. -
Deja vu
I recall a scam project around this time last year for Kobe beef jerky that just got suspended shortly before the campaign ends. I wonder if Kickstarter will do the same at the last minute.

If you want a chuckle, read the Dr. Paul McArthur "bio" post.

Krita: alternative for Mac
Sorry for being a little off topic, but isn't it time that we start supporting alternatives to Photoshop?
Krita impresses me with the frequent feature updates they provide and they are running a kickstarter at the moment: https://www.kickstarter.com/pr...
What would be really great is if they could reach their super goal which will mean they are going to port Krita to Mac as well.
-
Maybe UMich can help?
While they didn't hit their Kickstarter Goal, this is exactly the sort of thing they were trying to make last year.

Various options
Take a look at the sigrok project. We have rather a lot of experience with low cost lab gear.
For a long time the best option for a standalone scope has been the Das Oszi scopes, sold under the brand names Hantek, Protek and Voltcraft. As a bonus, a guy name tinhead has reverse engineered the schematics. Hopefully we'll have it supported in sigrok very soon.
There's also the SmartScope for ~$180.

Emotiv Insight
This Kickstarter project looks promising.

$199 Labnation Smartscope
Smartscope, US$ 199, open source USB oscilloscope / logic analyzer / arbitrary waveform generator (and optionally Xilinx Spartan 6 FPGA dev kit) was recently kickstarted, it is expected to ship by August 1st. Supports Linux, Windows XP/7/8 (PC version), Mac OS, Android & (jailbroken) iOS.
Anyway, also buy a cheap 2nd hand analog oscilloscope (under $50), you will learn a lot from that.

Re:They got $600K for free.
Sounds like pretty good deal to me.
Somebody doesn't know how kickstarter works:
https://www.kickstarter.com/he...
Every project creator sets their project's funding goal and deadline. If people like the project, they can pledge money to make it happen. If the project succeeds in reaching its funding goal, all backers' credit cards are charged when time expires. If the project falls short, no one is charged. Funding on Kickstarter is all-or-nothing.

Re:no thank you apple
um what open solutions?
I've just plonked down the cash for a Ninja Blocks kit. http://ninjablocks.com/collect...
It's very simple to use, based around the open Beaglebone SBC and has both free apps and open source development tools.
I'll probably upgrade to the Sphere when it's available too. https://www.kickstarter.com/pr...

Re:Nerds
You haven't watched many of these videos have you?
Slashdot TV videos in the past have had audio panned to one side per mic and not corrected in post, horrible volume jumps between mics, etc. In general I'm conditioned to expect a painful experience from
/.tv productions. This was one of the better produced ones. There are a bunch of things that I think could use some major work. The inane/simplistic interview questions still continue and drive me up the wall. I don't want to complain too much on this point because I know that there are a lot of people who read
/. that aren't in on the "maker" community side, but this (stereolithography) tech has had at least one successful kickstarter project in Oct/2012 (formlabs, which I'm just realizing was mentioned in the video ). It's nice to see it coming to a more DIY community, but I would hope the /. community could do enough outside research to understand the basics without them being drawn down to a 3rd grade level.Timothy isn't too bad as a host (beyond the simplification), but Robin annoys me from time to time because he gets off topic too easily and opinionizes during an interview (and all his interviews are recorded on an old(?) webcam, blech!). I understand that these guys are doing their best as nerds-become-editor, but my heart of hearts tells me that things would advance by gobs if they put in some (relatively) minor funding in hiring a journalism/media major who can help them get this s#!+ right . Especially given the broader site ads I've been seeing.
(standard disclaimers: nobody reads the TFA; I don't wanna hafta google/bing; Use adblock/ghostery/voodo magic; you're an AC troll GTFO; #ImGoingToBeModdedDownForThis; allman rules 1tbs drools)

Alternative and more on those mentioned...
It seems pretty common to complain about the resolution. There are other projects that appear to have resolved the issue: http://www.avegant.com/ And their kickstarter: https://www.kickstarter.com/pr... And for Abrash's book: http://amzn.com/1576101746 And a good story on Carmack's background: http://amzn.com/0812972155 Abrash's book is dated, but still pretty common.

May I interest you in Shards Online: A Customizable Sandbox RPG?
:)We felt the same way, and as former UO devs we wanted to create a fully playable MMO with all its systems that can be modded by anyone at anytime.

Remove the firing pin
A smart gun that could not be fired outside of a firing range or as a second option at a human would be a much smarter choice. The right to bear arms

They raised a million dollars for this?
So you need a computer, or at least a power supply with a USB port, to power a heater and motor? I have some doubts about the thing being cool enough to hold, too. Your fingers are about 3mm from a 180C heat source.
3D Doodler already has one of these things. Theirs seems to work, although they speed up the video too. For both, the results look like Silly String.

Re:Why?
When being asked, why re-invent the wheel, the best reply is because maybe the wheel isn't good enough.
Then again, we also got this

Arkyd are already doing this.
The Arkyd project by Planetary Resources has already raised $ 1,505,366 on Kickstarter to put telescopes in orbit to detect asteroids.

Re:Not True
"This story is BS. "Crowdfunding", early access and F2P are killing gaming."
Not quite, AAA dev costs were killing gaming. Remember THQ went out of business, supreme commander 1 'bombed' (only sold a million vs the cost it took to develop it). The reality is AAA high graphic games require hundreds of devs and 10 million minimum investment to even start on anything worthwhile to meet gamer expectations.
I agree that F2P is killing gaming, but crowdfunding is in fact the wildcard here. Shadow Run Returns was not a bad start considering the meager funding they got. The 2nd campaign is actually pretty decent. FTL (Faster than light) was pretty damn great and it was crowdfunded. The Megaman crowdfunded game looks interesting. Next car game looks like it could be great (check out the physics demo v2).

Re:No.
A 3D printer for under 500$USD is nothing new.
The Printrbot Simple Kit has available for months, for 349$USD.
Still too expensive? For 200$USD, you can get a Makibox A6 LT.
Want to go even lower? You can get a Peachy Printer for only 100$CAD.

Pennies from Heaven
This is perhaps a great time to address the charitable status of religion. A new Kickstarter project has just begun to produce a full length documentary on the tax benefits that religions receive. It is called 'Pennies from Heaven'. This is a professional production that we hope will receive airtime on public television as well as on the net. A trailer for the documentary can be found below:

Re:Dumb move...
this is the best possible move for the platform. customers win when they can play great games that they feel are a reasonable price. OUYA is giving devs freedom to experiment with different ways to pay. the best games and ways to pay will float to the top. As somebody who invested a couple hundred $$ into onlive, I'm a big fan of online gaming.
Maybe, but OUYA still received $8 million in funding with the promise that "ALL GAMES FREE TO PLAY". The fact that they're going back on their promise now makes every kickstarter campaign look bad.
Whether the games are free or not is the not the reason OUYA is failing, the reasons are obvious: it doesn't play regular android games (game must be OUYA compatiable), poor controller, it's slower than modern smartphones and tablets, and when you can just plug your tablet or smartphone into your TV why buy a OUYA at all?
