Re:Such a dumb move
One point that the original article seems to be missing is that KDP Select titles can only be borrowed by people who a) are Amazon Prime subscribers and b) own Amazon Kindle devices. While this doesn't completely inoculate the service from the sort of "gaming" that he refers to on MP3.com, that's a much higher barrier to entry than signing up for an account and downloading a file for free.
So, the idea is that one fan can no longer download your book 50 times, so that will stop the fraud. Well, it doesn't stop the fraud, it just makes the fraud more creative.
Kings of Chaos is a game built around this very principle! Each player gets a unique link that they share with their friends, and every time it is clicked on, you get more troops for your army. Each of your friends can only click on your link once every 24 hours.
So, people form giant guilds (thousands in a guild), and they all store their links in a "recruiter" (search the page for it). Then you spend an hour each night using the recruiter. For every link that you click on in the recruiter, it increases how often your link is shown to others.
It's rather amazing how much effort people put into a game that really has no point (ie. KOC). KDP Select appears to me to be KOC again, but it's no longer a game, and real money is given out. I fully expect it to be a complete disaster.

Re:In case anyone is wondering..
..he mentioned Java because there's a Bridge mechanism in OS X that allows Java code to call ObjC code, and ObjC code to call Java code. I've used it myself and found it to be an effective way to write Java programs that are native to the OS X platform. Be warned, however. Differences in the way ObjC and Java handle objects causes quite a bugs.
Yeah "quite a bugs" like erasing your whole User folder when you try to use the Java.net.* classes. -

Awesome Adult game
I have an adult game I've been working on. It's being hosted on my clans website. Click here to get it. You will have to click the number, it's because too many people were linking to it.
It's pretty awesome, you can play as a man or a women. You have to pick up people in a nightclub, then if you manage to have sex with them you can get "style" points for the way you do it. Check it out! -

Re:Not at all -- let's look at the numbersperhaps you meant 1 visitor per second? Because 1 per minute would only be 24*60...
That, and 1 per minute would be a fairly slow site.
Having said both, there's ways around this, as far as for hotmail/yahoo/etc. Instead of asking you to enter text, do it like Kings of Chaos used to. Now, they put the answers in a sequential row - they used to mix the answers around. If 1-15 aren't in that order, its a bit harder. Esp if you combine the two - make the answer grid a captcha all of its own. I better not say this too loud though, or amazon will patent it
:P
And yes - that's my recruit link - don't click it if you don't want to
:P I'm giving it so you can actually SEE what I'm talking about, instead of sending people to the main page (which would have been useless). They stopped randomizing the order I guess because people were getting confused??? Too bad for them, I say. -
Re:a girl gamer's response...One thing I've seen at the women's college I attend is that Snood has appeared on almost all the computers. Most of the women there - and, yes, it is small enough that I know most of them somewhat - aren't particularly into games. When they do play on computers, it's Snood and other puzzle/strategy type games. The remainder are either long-time video gamers or, like me, play adventure, RPG, and online multi-player games.
Personally, I think one key thing for most women is to have their minds engaged. If it has a good plot, or if you have the freedom to do anything (or at least try and get witty replies from the game), those earn it extra word-of-mouth advertising. Also, one key thing about most of the games women play is that there is a choice, if you are playing an avatar, in how you want him or her to deal with others. There is a measure of respect available in dealings with female
/and/ male NPCs, even if it's only a multiple-choice dialogue. This isn't to say they're exalted, but merely treated as beings with minds and desires of their own instead of brainless eye-candy.When the industry fails to provide games, the independant developers fill the void. Snood, for example. The last ten or so years of interactive fiction games from the IF Archive. Multi-player games like Dragon's Dusk and Kings of Chaos. The options are out there for anyone with the capability of using a search engine to investigate.

Re:I hate to say it, but VB is the way to go.
About the web based alternative you have suggested, it is not hard to set up an Apache web server with PHP, and possibly MySQL, even on a Win98 box. While the learning curve may be slightly higher, with some encouragement it is another learning opportunity for the child, and s/he can learn how http on the Internet works, or even how SQL and database works. Also, with a DSL/Cable connection (that allows hosting, yes there are those out there) and a cheap box, the developed work can be showed off to the child's peers. The software costs zero dollars, and the hosting costs is paid for already, assuming the house already has that.
I suggest installing the Apache and PHP first, have the child get the hang of it. Have him read the documentation, as PHP functions are very well documented. Once that is done MySQL can be added, and it is up to the child's imagination to what he or she can do with it. A highly popular Internet game, Kings of Chaos, got started by a bunch of high school students, just on PHP and MySQL.
If the child just want to go back to playing the PS2, even with good parental encouragement/assistance, I highly doubt that child is actually enthuastic or motivated enough to find interest in programming, at least at that stage. -
