Should go
in a retro setting, with these. -
right
Because Klipsch is merely a loudspeaker company, but Logitech is all about bringing value to the consumer!
Klipsch actually has 2 5.1 systems (with decoders) Their new system is only $299. see it here.
The kicker? you can add up to 16 sub modules. pow!
I don't work for them, yadda yadda. -

Re:What else filters are good forWhatever you do, do NOT buy this guy any Medal of Honor games.
And do NOT buy him a Klipsch surround sound system to go with them.
No. Really. I think this game is giving me PTSD.

Re:Buy a receiver!
Feh. You just need the right Klipsch speaker.

Klipsch Promedia 4.1!
If you don't mind refurbished products, Klipsch has this system for $149 at their store. Supposed to be excellent, and a steal at this price.

Calling all trolls -- troll assault on Klipsch!!!
Klipsch has ripped me off bad, as my new set of 4.1 speakers basically quit working with no fair reason -- and they have said they wouldn't refund me at all.
The moderators seem totally absent from their forums, so troll the fuck away:
http://forums.klipsch.com/
I started subtle, but the temptation to post the entire goatse series was too strong! They have almost no limitations, registration doesn't require a valid email, and there are no moderators whatsoever.
I'm going asleep, but if you like trolling, fill the entire forum up with the sickest pictures you can find and make those bastards pay for making their shitty products in fucking Chinese sweatshops!
I would offer myself out to any troll who asks if every post on every forum was a goatse pic. -

Re:What a Sound Card needs...
If you've got some more cash to spend I'd recommend the Klipsch ProMedia 5.1. Watching a DVD with these speakers easily rivals the sound quality of dedicated home theater equipment. And playing an FPS with these speakers lets you truely feel the explosions and allows you to accurately hear from which direction bullets are being shot at you. A must for a computer audiophile to go with your real high end sound card. Did i mention it's THX certified as well...

Re:What a Sound Card needs...
I completely agree. I bought some Klipsch ProMedia 2.1 speakers and they are amazing. I highly recommend them.

Klipsch Promedia 5.1's
-THX®-Certified
-500-watt BASH® amplifier
-113dB maximum at listening position
-25Hz-20kHz Freq range
-Subwoofer with dual 8" side-firing drivers
Price: $399.99
Full specs available HERE -
If you have the money...
...go with Klipsh Promedia 5.1 speakers. If you're an audiophile, these things will satisfy any need you could want: music, games, DVDs, or anything else.
With a 113dB max volume, these things can crank up to the volume of a jet taking off next to your house. It has an incredible 25Hz-20kHz frequency response and sounds absolutely beautiful. Once again, if you have the money, these are the absolute best you can buy. Nothing else comes close, and at $399.00, it has a fairly low price tag for what you get. -
hope this helps.
First of all good call on the Santa Cruz, it's a really decent part; It costs much, sounds fantastic and it takes up far less resources on Windows boxes (lay off you bastards, I like ALL the games).
I just built another game box using the SC and pulled myCambridge Soundworks DTT3500s (5.1 digital) off the other box that was using the SoundBlaster Live! Platinum. Even without the optical out the versa jack/din digital worked great and really sounds magnificent. I would hazard to say that the DTT3500s sound better for music and games on the Turtle beach part then did on Creative Labs part.
Now the other part of the story... so since Klipsch is releasing 500watt ProMedia 5.1s, the 400 watt 4.1 version is much cheaper, so I lit out to BestBuy (of all freaking places) and picked up a set. The Klipsch ProMedia 4.1s are the best speakers I have ever heard for the money. Yeah, you can get some Polk Audios or B&Ws or whatever and spend $600 per speaker and have sound engineers come over and dance a little audio geek dance or whatever...
But I am telling you this; find a store that has a good return policy on Klipsch ProMedia 4.1, after listening to them you will not be taking them back. Or you could wait and check into the ProMedia 5.1s that, from what I understand, take the product to an entirely higher stratum.

Klipsch ProMedia
I'm personally quite fond of the Klipsch ProMedia speakers. They have 2.1, 4.1 and 5.1 sets. Plus the speakers and amplifier are THX-certified. Which, in most peoples' opinions, is complete overkill for PC audio, but who says overkill is a bad thing?
:)

Klipsch ProMedias (Re:It IS nothing special ...)
For THX Multimedia support (not the same THX standard as for [home-]theater), the recognized favorite speaker rig for gamers is the Klipsch Promedias. They've been available for around $250 for, oh, I dunno, forever, making Dell's announcement sorta unremarkable.
Interested readers may want to check the forums and reviews 3D Sound Surge to see how these speakers fare against speakers from Videologic, Cambridge Soundworks, and Aletec Lansing (which in my circle have somewhat of a rep for poor-quality construction).

What THX really is...
THX really stands for "We're milking you for every single penny you got". Really, go ahead and spend a whole buch of cash on something that has 3 well known letters attached to it.
I don't think its something to get so hyped up about. Klipsch has their Pro-Media's. Don't get me wrong, they're very nice, but theres lots of other nice speakers out there too, that don't cost so much. Sadly, they don't come with the status THX symbol. -
The Klipsch's ...
... have been certified THX for a couple years now.... specifically the ProMedia's.

Klipsch Promedia's
I've got just about everything I need in a set of promedias. They are about $200 at Klipsch.
They seem to be some of the most versatile speakers, since they are simple 1/8" in.
Full 4.1, 250 watt, more than enough for any smallish room. And they are all for me...
You'd want to get a reciever if you are going to
run them stand alone, but what good geek wouldn't be using his computer for DVD??? -
Two paths...For consumer level, if you want to find out what all this DVD/Home theater stuff is all about equipment, you might want to stick with Sony receivers. Make sure you look at the STR-DE 8xx or 9xx level of their AV receiver (these do 5.1 Dolby digital surround sound. I have a STR-DE915 (not the ES high audiophile series) from a couple of years ago and it works great for my apartment setup. I'm running Mirage speakers. The nice thing with going with componants from a single vendor is you can reduce the remote clutter. Another option is to pick up one of the super remotes out there (around $100) that can handle most equipment.
For higher end stuff, you might check out Klipsch speakers and McIntosh amplifiers. No, these aren't related to Macintosh computers so you'd be safe from contamination.
The Digital Theater is a good place to read up on A/V equipment.

Some Suggestions
Personally I prefer Klipsch. For the money, they're great. For $600?/pair, I got two awesome front speakers. They have a 15" sub in the back, and a 12" sub in the front, there's no need to get a powered subwoofer. Klipsch speakers have, in my opinion, the best midrange horn in the market.
If you have some cash, get a Nakamichi receiver. If not, get a good(middle to top of the line) Pioneer, Sony or JVC receiver.
I personally like my speaker setup, 4 Klipsch in the livingroom, 2 in the bedroom, and 2 in the bathroom(flushmount in the ceiling). I have a nice switchbox that allows me to control the volume on each set, turn on/off each set, individually. I think it was about $120.
Hope it helps,
Justin
P.S. The bathroom speakers are not optional. I was just turning up the livingroom speakers to hear when I was in the shower, but the neighbors started complaining. I live in a house, they're next door. -
ALSA rules!I have a Sound Blaster Live! Value with Klipsch ProMedia speakers (they rule, www.klipsch.com), and I tried the drivers from opensource.creative.com and they were cool, but then when I tried ALSA drivers, the install scripts (buildrpm scripts for redhat/mandrake/rpm-bitch-distros) were VERY easy to use, and ALSA drivers put out WAY better sound and bass with my music, so I'm pumped. It also has many things on its page, such as new mixers and programs that it works well with.
only problems i'm having are from not being able to compile c++ executables (i've tried everything..) and i can't set up an alsamixer to make my rear speakers louder. Also, the xmms alsa plugin doesn't work for me (xmms segfaults), and without it, there's a bit of static at the beginning of each song. But it still sounds way better..
Go alsa/SuSE!
