This was on Kuro5hin
Some of the comments on K5 were very good, especially the ones by people who RTFA and watched the friendly video. Despite my own right-sided tendencies, I don't side with this guy. He'd been drinking, he'd been arguing, he was rude to the cop (which shouldn't be illegal, but is certainly stupid), and generally isn't a good guy. There are insinuations that the subtitles in the video don't actually agree with what people are actually saying, which makes his position appear weaker.
I hope not carrying ID, or not giving it out w/out good reason, stays legal, but I also hope that drunk, obnoxious jerks get regulated on. -
Re:per requirement to muddy the waters, spread FUD
there are no legal protections for "trade secrets"
Uh, no.
There are very definitely protections for trade secrets, even when they have been disclosed. We learned all about this when the DVD-CCA sued over DeCSS, claiming it was a trade secret.
As I have been led to understand, there are two primary tests to determine if one is illicitly trafficking in trade secrets:
- Was the person disclosing/sharing the material under obligation not to do so?
- Did the person sharing the material know, or should they have known, that the material was a trade secret?
DVD-CCA argued that both #1 and #2 were true. They (erroneously) argued #1 was established by the so-called "license" attached to the DVD playback software that was reverse-engineered. They (also erroneously) argued #2 was established by the fact that the "license" clearly stated the playback software was a trade secret, and that constituted sufficient disclosure to the public. (DVD-CCA is no longer claiming trade secret, now that they finally got their patent.)
In the immediately present case, Microsoft can probably legitimately argue #2, since the code leak has been all over the press. Since I haven't looked at the sources, I don't know if they can argue #1, but I'd be very surprised if the source files didn't have "Confidential and Proprietary" scrawled all over them.
BTW, there's a great article commenting on the leaked code itself over at Kuro5hin.

Re:Childhood's End
I already commented in this thread, but I just reread your commment and realized that you mentioned the "long future". I think that's what always pulled me in to Clarke, and especially the City and the Stars... that strange sensation of perpetuity, of what might happen in a world so far extrapolated from where most sci-fi writers can even reach.
That's what I like about The Light of Other Days, as I said in my other comment, but I also think Asimov touched on a similiar feeling in his short story, The Last Question. It's always on the list of his best shorts, and it's always worth a reread (though the first read is best).
A story that you may or may not enjoy is The Metamorphosis of Prime Intellect, a book based upon Vernor Vinge's idea of the Singularity. It's more violent than I'm usually amenable to, but it's the best online novella I've ever read (actually the only one I've really gotten into, because I hate reading stories off the screen). The whole idea of the Singularity blew my mind (and still does), and this story takes it to a far point... worth a shot if you haven't given it one, IMHO. -
Re:Goddam you're a dullard
Perhaps his question made it to the front page because others here are interested in the same?
Ha ha ha! Are you lost, buddy? This is slashdot, not Kuro5hin. This question wasn't "voted" on. It got put on slashdot because a single slashdot editor saw the submission and thought "Hey, this should generate a good couple-thousand ad viewings, up it goes!". -
Re:I would love to goTom, is that you?
John could hear the ghost of video game music from the kid's headphones. He wasn't actually playing games -- John had checked on that personally -- he was just listening to the soundtracks. That was only the most superficial evidence of Tom's deeply flawed psychology, but John was the only one who seemed concerned.
Not that I should criticize... To my horror, I recognized the music some music from FF playing in a software store the other day... The horror was from remembering that it was from the Auction House in FF 3/6j. I haven't played that since high school, yet I remembered listening to that melody for hours on end just to get Magicite shards...

GNAA announces responsibility for kernel backdoorGNAA Announces responsibility for kernel backdoor
By Tim Copperfield
Raleigh, NC - GNAA (Gay Nigger Association of America) this afternoon announced one of their loyal members was responsible for planting the "backdoor" inside the popular opensores operating system, Lunix (Stocks, Websites).
In a shocking announcement this afternoon, GNAA representative goat-see revealed that the mistery hacker who penetrated high-security defenses of the Lunix "source code" repository and injected viral gay nigger seed deep inside the kernel was indeed a full-time GNAA member.
"This is serious," goat-see began. This is a first event of such magnitude since GNAA opened its doors to new members in 1996. Until now, we were gathering new members by announcing our group information on a popular troll website, slashdot.org, but this is a whole new era. By injecting our holy gay nigger seed right into the Lunix kernel, we will be able to immediately collect thousands of members. "Make the most of the next six weeks," he added. "We will grow in numbers more than you can possibly imagine".
Insertion of the GNAA backdoor came right between the consideration of Novell to buy out the entire Lunix Kernel programming team, and will most likely positively affect the decision. By adding all the gay niggers working for Novell with the gay niggers developing Lunix kernel source, GNAA will be all-powerful and will begin plotting our next plans to add "backdoors" into the next favorite operating system, BeOS.

What's this stupid lameness filter? All I want to do is post
this link and I have to type all this crap out.
Jeesh. -
A quick look at the source codeKuroshin has an article about the source code:
"In short, there is nothing really surprising in this leak. Microsoft does not steal open-source code. Their older code is flaky, their modern code excellent. Their programmers are skilled and enthusiastic. Problems are generally due to a trade-off of current quality against vast hardware, software and backward compatibility."
But this IE exploit shows that the author was wrong on at least one account:
"The security risks from this code appear to be low. Microsoft do appear to be checking for buffer overruns in the obvious places. The amount of networking code here is small enough for Microsoft to easily check for any vulnerabilities that might be revealed: it's the big applications that pose more of a risk. This code is also nearly four years old: any obvious problems should be patched by now".

Well, maybe they will listen to him
Because noone is listenning to my rants anyway.
I I posted it a few times maybe ESR read it? :)
Well, I am posting it last time now.
I would like to see GNU/Linux to become a more powerful platform and by a more powerful platform I mean a platform that provides the user with a pleasant experience. Now, to provide a pleasant experience a platform must give the user a choice - a choice of applications that exist for the platform is a step in the right direction. However, GNU/Linux is not such a platform yet. If it were, it would have been embraced by the masses already and it is not. There are a few things that GNU/Linux system is lacking and one of the more important lacking components is a convenient tool that allows a novice create his/her own software for the platform, software that easily manipulates data imported from multiple sources and allows to create graphical interfaces to that data. In the Microsoft this functionality is provided by such a ubiquitous tool as Visual Basic. In the Free Software world there are many tools that are extremely powerful but none of them have the same kind of momentum that Visual Basic delivers on Microsoft platform. VB is taught at schools, it is the language of macros under MS platform.
To answer the question- "What can be the VB for Free Software?" we need to look at the kind of problems that will have to be solved by this tool. The problems solved by VB are of many kinds, but for the general public VB provides the bridge that closes the gap between a user and a multitude of small problems that the user wants to solve. Of-course it is possible to just create a VB IDE for FS platforms but I believe there is a more interesting solution to this problem and it is Java. Just like VB, Java runs in a virtual machine, so the user will never really have direct access to any hardware resources, but an abstract layer of JVM can provide a nice buffer between the user and the hardware and at the same time Java will always behave in the same way on multiple other platforms, including Windows. Java is an OO language but at the same time it is very easy to write functions in Java (static everything). Java has thousands of convenience libraries, there is enough Free Software written for Java that can be integrated into an IDE. However there is a big problem with the language itself - it is not Free.
Sun allows anyone to use Java for free but nobody can modify the language itself except for Sun. In order for Java to become for Free Software and Gnu/Linux what VB became for Microsoft, Java has to be Freed and put out under the GPL. There is also probably a good business sense in it for the Sun Microsystems as well - their language suddenly becomes the language of choice for millions and thousands will work on improving the language, the virtual machine, the compiler etc. In this case Sun will stay in a position that Linus finds himself in - they become the gate-keepers for the vanilla Java tree, but Java will branch and will become much more spread than it is right now. Sun can capitalize on that by providing more Java based solutions and services.
Now it is likely that Sun management will not agree to the change of their Java's status, however, if there was an immediately profitable reason for them to do this, they just may turn around and start thinking about it. A reason that is profitable could be a large sum of cash available to them upon releasing Java under the GPL. Where could this money come from? These money could be collected by the FS and OS supporters, the developers and the users who would like to see more momentum in the GNU/Linux movement towards a successful (wide spread) desktop solution. I suppose no one will seriously object to have one more powerful tool in their Free Software tool-bag. Java can be this tool and it can be just the thing needed to tip the scales over towards quick appearance of a useful and a popular GNU/Linux desktop.
* I use Free to mean Free Software (Libre) and I use free to mean free of charge.

A problem with RDF metadataSome online communities do not allow you to embed metadata in your posts. I licensed Links to Tens of Thousands of Legal Music Downloads under the Creative Commons Attribution-NoDerivs license, and originally included the RDF in the markup.
But when I submitted it to Kuro5hin, the preview showed the RDF meta data literally (visibly) in the text, I think to indicate that Scoop was rejecting it. That is, Kuro5hin didn't accept HTML comments in the markup.
Also, Creative Commons advises posting the Some Rights Reserved image as the license notice, but I couldn't do that because kuro5hin (very sensibly) doesn't allow images. That's why I posted the license notice at the end of the article the way CC says to do for a text file.
Now, I'm sure Scoop could be updated to allow RDF, but how many online communities are there, and how many will need their software updated?

Please googlebomb my copyright articleI'd like to ask your help with getting all the peer-to-peer network users to read my article "Links to Tens of Thousands of Legal Music Downloads".
You can help by Googlebombing my article this way - post links anywhere on the web that say my article is about free music downloads
It's about much more than that, such as what the US Constitution says about copyright, and what you can do to get us out of the mess we're in, but if you can help boost my article's rank for the query "free music downloads", you can encourage the p2p users who I intended to address with my writing, to come read my article, get informed and get working to change the copyright laws.
I discuss this at more length in my kuro5hin diary.
My article ranks about #17 at google for the query "free music downloads", yet it got 4400 referrals from it during January. How many people would read my article if it got to #1?
Thanks for your help.

Apollo Diamond
If it were that easy to mine for diamonds...hen it'd be really easy to get diamonds.
Almost Apollo Diamond has patented a vapor-deposition process to make diamonds at about $5 per carat, and the resulting gemstones have even greater purity than anything De Beers ever dug out of the ground. Within 20 years, the bottom will fall out of the diamond market, unless Apollo manages to join the pharmaceutical industry in lobbying for the Cher Patent Term Act.
Anyway, puzzle games are supposed to be abstract, but they're still consistent within their own little worlds.

Re:How it actually works
I wonder though, whether the reason you couldn't find a publisher didn't actually have something to do with the fact that it was available on-line already and had been for some time.
Certainly, you had 10,000 readers, but you had 10,000 readers who had already read the book.
I can't help but think that, were you to write a second novel, the existence of MOPI would certainly help your publishing chances.
After k5 published Enn-Eye, I shopped a lengthened and edited version around to a few magazines. I was very up front about it's having already been published on k5 in an earlier version. They all turned it down, but unanimously said that they were impressed with the response to it on k5 and would like to see future work from me.
Just a thought. -
How it actually worksI released my novel for free mainly because it was too edgy to attract the attention of a normal publisher and I was tired of letting it rot on my hard drive. I used a tip jar and published my experience with that.
Upshot? A review on slashdot was my biggest promotional score, and total readership appears to be about 10,000 worldwide. Tip jar revenue ended up a bit over $1,000. And despite many mails and posts telling me it was a very good novel, I still can't attract a publisher.
It just isn't as easy as it looks.
Unfortunately there was no POD publisher available at the time that had low setup fees. I lost much time trying for conventional publication again and now that it's available on dead trees from lulu.com the wave of interest has passed and I haven't sold many copies.
However, because of all the interest I am working on a sequel (which I'd have never considered before) and when it's ready I will introduce it online and via Lulu at the same time. Hopefully that will let the impulse shoppers grab a copy while it's fresh in their minds. It will be interesting to see how that works out.

Re:The ultimate vaporware...
The applications of utility fog are boundless, but one I'm sure parents would love is the "security blanket" for their kids - the fog would act as smart 24/7 airbag extending for several feet around the body so little Timmy never gets bruised falling down the stairs...
The Timmy's of the world then learn a new game: "how far can I fall without getting bruised?"
Similar concepts are explored in "The Metamorphosis of Prime Intellect" -- highly recommended (free!) reading. Localroger's short story (novella, really) has characters entering "death pacts" where the computer tasked with Asimov's three laws (which won't let anyone die or be hurt), temporarily turns a blind eye while people "duel" and, when one is almost dead, it resets them.
This will completely change the experience of growing up. It'll be a lot less traumatic, I would imagine (but then traumas will just come in different forms, most of them psychological/social).

__NO__ electronic publishing is not the way to go.
i failed my first year logic course primarily because i ran an outdated version of windows(dos shell/win3.1) without the propper java support to so much as open my logic textbook(it was on a CDROM)
worse still is that it has a key in it so that only one person can own the textbook, with only one email address, and so if you sell anyone else your "textbook" the only way this textbook is useful is if you also give them your email.
as i understand it, once you have a book, textbook or otherwise, once you understand the material, you can use the book to teach others. this is how the entire 'writing' technology has served us for millenia, and i don't like the way knowledge evaporates after awhile through some digital means.
language proof and logic, this means you.
here's a post i made near then on k5
yay lets replace a 500$ textbook set with a 3000$ computer every year! that'l save us lots of money! -

Other authors own your expression
Is this suppose to be a rhetorical argument that a creator doesn't own what he creates?
I intended it as an argument that an author shouldn't own what other authors create.
the innovation is not identical to the source, I have added my own novel element.
True, you can get away with copying ideas. But what about classes of works where the "idea" and the "expression" aren't so easy to distinguish, such as musical works? Under U.S. law, if you add your novel element to a substantial portion of an existing copyrighted expression without permission of the other work's author, which is not obtainable in the vast majority of cases, the other work's author owns your novel element, even if your novel element predominates over the other author's.
The novel element is my property, for a limited time at least, and rightly so.
In terms of an author's own lifetime, how is until your children are long dead a "limited time", other than through the twisted interpretation offered by the Supreme Court in Eldred v. Ashcroft? Inventors, on the other hand, seem happy with 20 years; I don't recall any news report of them trying for some sort of Cher Patent Term Extension Act.
To say that society owns what a creator's brain creates is to say that society owns the creator's brain. It doesn't.
But to say that one author owns what another author creates is to say that one author owns the other author's brain. He does.
I agree with the position on derivative works and copyright term that Spider Robinson puts forth in the short story "Melancholy Elephants". Have you read it?
-
28 years is still a reward; analogy to patents
Society should give some motivation, but not by giving no rewards.
The original U.S. copyright act gave plenty of rewards: twenty-eight whole years. The current U.S. patent act gives plenty of rewards: twenty whole years. If you feel that such a term of monopoly does not adequately reward the investment of time and effort into a work or invention, then please explain why I haven't seen Lilly, GSK, Pfizer, and the like publicly lobbying for some sort of Cher Patent Term Extension Act.

Good groups include Propaghandi, Strung Out, No Use for a Name, and NOFX, whose singer, Fat Mike, owns the label. NOFX is pretty good, Fat Mike has got to be the worst singer but I'd rather listen about him whining that there's something sticking in his eye (True song : "Sticking in my eye") than whatever American Idol spews up this season with a oh-so melodious voice. That "Simon" judge would probably throw him out at the auditions, and he'd hopefully get a nice skateboard slammed across his face.
Other, a fav "local for me" non-RIAA band/label is owned by Montreal band "Grim Skunk"who also run indica records and publish albums for roughly 20 non-corporate bands. They also distribute albums from alternative (as in non-commercial) europeans bands. It won't come as a surprise, but the bassist of Grim Skunk was one of the founder of the marijuana partyand the provincial bloc pot party. Their song are in english, french, greek, spanish, some german and arabic thrown in there if I recall. If you like heavy, non mainstream music start with their album "Exotic Blend". Not a cent of what you buy from them goes to the RIAA, but expect some of it to fund pot legalisation and their compassion club where they hand out medicinal marijuana.
Don't blame me if your government sends the DEA and FBI after you though. -
Going to the dogs!
By Jove, our ability to communicate is going to the dogs (with no offense to our canine friends). Don't know which is worse... Censorship in our phone communications, or this - THE GOAT DUDE IS A GONER. Really now, this may seem a tad offtopic, but isn't this phone censorship deal just another brick in a wall? And for moderate laughs...: Supposing I find quite offensive and rather shocking those sites that defend such censorship... quite offensive actually... Wouldn't I have a case against them, on account of them hurting my susceptibility (sp?), causing my morale to go down? (and i DO mean morale;)) Cheers

Michael is a horrible editor who should be fired:Why? Why fire one of the most active editors on slashdot?
Although they claim this is a news site, michael openly admits his extreme bias and his affinity towards slanting the facts to fit his predetermined notions.
michael was hired in the middle of hijacking the www.censorware.org website in a very immature, unethical, and corrupt manner.
michael will frequently censor entire threads down to -1, simply because he doesn't agree with it.
Even worse, sometimes michael (or some other slashdot editors) will mod a thread down to -1, and revoke mod point priveledges if anything, *anything* in that thread is modded up.
Of course, this is just a partial list. michael's unprofessionalism, hypocrisy, and immaturity are well known to most long term slashdotters. It's amazing that despite this, and despite everyone's complaints to him and CmdrTaco, he has yet to change. This should not continue. michael should be fired now. -
Re:The problem with Zope (and Plone)
In theory, I strongly agree with what you're saying. In practice, however, having set up my own Zope/CMF/Plone side on Debian unstable (yes, unstable) and Apache, I'm gonna have to disagree.
It took me a while to set up Zope/Plone. There's a nasty bug in Debian's distribution of Plone, but thankfully there's a super easy workaround in the BTS. It also took a couple visits to #plone@irc.gnu.org to set up an actual Plone instance, but in retrospect it wasn't that hard. I got the Apache passthrough working too. Now, Plone's setup phase is done. Anything I need to change is done via GUI, and the Structured Text system is perfect for marking up content without obfuscating it. Oh yeah, and the Structured Text was the only thing I actually had to look at the Plone docs for. It's probably even easier when you use them start to finish.
I've used e107, PostNuke, XOOPS, Slash, Scoop and probably a few others. They're all neat, but I've had way more problems with them all, from just plain failure to strange errors to lack of features. e107 does have a TON more themes available, though.
You say Zope is going in the wrong direction, but I fail to see how. With Zope, you can build webapps into your Plone site - just don't ask me how. With most PHP-based CMS's you still have to install an SQL server of some flavor, and I doubt if you can build webapps in. You complain about Zope/CMF/Plone being three-tiered, but really CMF is just an addon to Zope - it doesn't add complication. And I think it's pretty sweet to be able to manage all your Zope stuff through one interface - including all your Plone sites and whatever else you've got going. You also complain that Zope is a "closed world" because of the object database. Yeah, it's about as "closed" as any other website that has an FTP backend - i.e. NOT.
And as far as speed, I haven't noticed a bit of difference between Plone and e107 (the only other CMS I've ended up using for real). I'm not pretending I get any real traffic, though. But to balance that, I've got a horrible setup - at the moment a P4-1.4 with 256/RAM and a cable modem with an upload cap of 256Kb.
In short, Plone rules. Not sure how it does it, but it does. -
