Alter or remove the laws regarding copyright until it's legal to "share" other people's work without their consent.

That's called "compulsory licensing," and many Slashdot readers have suggested forms of it in comments. Under a compulsory license scheme, a copyright owner would not be able to stop a particular use of a work (e.g. AOL Time Warner refusing to show Speedy Gonzales and also refusing to license it to other networks; see this K5 story and this comment in particular) but would be able to 1. collect a royalty (copyright law), and 2. declare unauthorized works "not canon" (trademark law).

Well, some guy on Kuro5hin wrote a rebuttal of that WSJ claim... maybe the guy's just making stuff up, but he says he worked at MS for 10 years, and knows the history of MS's TCP stack.

For one thing, he says that Spider Systems' stack was replaced by one written from scratch in NT 3.5 (which I assume means that Spider's stack was only in NT 3.1).

Now, he does say, "I won't even swear on a stack of bibles that the "new" TCP/IP now shipping in NT/2000/XP and Windows 95/98/Me is completely free of the old code from Spider," but even so, I really doubt if any actual BSD source code made it into Windows' TCP stack. I do think MS used BSD source as a reference to get the details on how things should work, which may explain the similarities and corner-case bugs. However, I don't think it'd be practical to actually lift the source code--the BSD and Windows kernel APIs just differ too much (heck, it's often not worth sharing source code between Linux and BSD drivers, and they're both Unixy... I know both sides look at the others' drivers for reference though). And it's my feeling that even Spider's stack was just based on Net/3; I don't think it contained much, if any, actual Net/3 source. After all, they did make the thing as a STREAMS module (according to the Kuro5hin guy), something pretty foreign to BSD.

But in the end, no, I don't have absolute proof that Windows' TCP stack doesn't have any BSD code in it. However, there's no proof that it does either, and it's annoying when people keep making the claim as if there were. Especially from what I know and what I've heard, I think it's more likely that there isn't any BSD code in there.

I can't believe this was modded up to +3.

"Apache and Perl was the way to go in 1996, but times have changed." What?! This is the same type of fallacious argument that Microsoft uses against UNIX; "it's 30 years old, it can't be any good!"

Of course, generally, the entire reason one uses a high-level language (like Perl, or Python, or PHP, or whatever...) is because quickly putting something together is more important than lightning-fast speed. It's safe to say that web development is one of those tasks which generally benefits more from the former than the latter. With this in mind, your (unsupported claims) of Perl CGI's "efficiency" problems are irrelevant. Could we see something like benchmarks, or any kind of evidence?

Your comment about "serious" webmasters "doing it" in "Java or C" for "serious speed" strikes me as being particularly odd. Your use of the word "serious" seems quite silly; there are plenty of serious 'webmasters' using Perl. As for the languages you mention, almost no one uses C; that defeats the entire purpose of general web development methodology. Again, your claims are completely unsupported by any further evidence.

Personally, if I need to do any web scripting, I have my own language of choice.

In C, for the same function, you are allowed to send it the same array twice (it's called aliasing)

As velco pointed out, ISO fixed the aliasing problem in C99. C99's 'restrict' keyword lets a developer specify in a function's prototype that no two input pointers point to the same area of memory, letting the C compiler do Fortran-esque optimizations. GCC is working toward C99 support.

When a web based application is displaying content aquired from other sources a great deal of effort is required to render the content harmless. In this article on kuro5hin it details the efforts by Yahoo to ensure that malicious javascript is not rendered in web mail.

I think the markup language should allow the page designer to disable potentially dangerous features such as javascript within particular frames (or other elements), but still allow it to work within the page as a whole.

Well, duuuh. What do people actually think that Hotmail, Mail, Excite, Go or other accounts are for? If you get on the Internet, you go through an ISP, which provides an email account, sometimes up to 5. That's where you get your real mail. For public exposure (signing on to news sites, etc.) email, get a Hotmail account, and just let it fill up with junk. I see it as getting a benefit from the Microsoft tax.

Here's my strategy. My ISP: 1 email account; personal use (friends and associates). Mail(.com): identifying myself in public commentary ... forums like Slashdot, Kuro5hin, and Fsckedcompany; sending rebuttals to online news journalists; and mailing webmasters/programmers about their sites/programs. Hotmail: more spam-prone exposures, like logins to pr0n sites, yowza. Go and Excite: miscellaneous uses that I haven't thought of yet.

Thus, my ISP email is utterly clean of spam. My Mail(.com) account gets a couple pieces of spam a week, with some replies from journalists, webmasters and programmers; I logon to Mail(.com) once a week to delete some spam and find some replies. My Hotmail account is a windswept and dusty wasteland of spam, getting 2-6 pieces of spam a day, and has some notices from the sites I subscribe to; I logon to Hotmail every 1 to 4 weeks to delete essentially everything, which is dozens of spam mails. The Go and Excite accounts are still being evaluated for their usefulness; I just login once a month to keep 'em active.

So, thank you Microsoft for providing me a spam filter. Go ahead and even sell the list of your Hotmail clients ... you will just be using your own bandwidth to fill up your own hard disks. Suckers.

Has anybody noticed that MANY of SLashdot's articles are getting progressively worse? I remember, that a few months ago, that many, if not all articles, had about 400 minimum (-1 t o 5). Now, an article is lucky to break the 100 post mark.

WHat I see, unlike the lies of "bad is dying", is that Slashdot is dying. The evidence to prove that Slashdot is, in fact, dying, is the following:

1: The Censoring (and deletion) of posts. MS claimed that /. had propeirty material that posters posted. Slashdot, instead, backed down from the 'policy'

"All trademarks and copyrights on this page are owned by their respective companies. Comments are owned by the Poster."

Deleting posts set a precident on /. that said "Comments are owned by Editor". The article still exists in Slashdot archives, but as SLashdot's search does not work (half-assed), I am not able to find it.

2: The INFAMOUS bitchslapping (applying -1 modpoints to a whole thread) of the The first Slashdot troll post investigation. And as said on Kuro5hin, "The editors of slashdot seem to be hell-bent on censoring the comment."


However, posts still flourished in slashdot, even though all other "article sites" watched while Slashdot editors made blunder after blunder. However, point 3 is what is burying Slashdot...

3: Bans of known "Trolls", ip bans on "abusive users", and only 10 Anonymous Coward posts from each class C subnet. Slashdot is CENSORING the same group that they compalin to when the big media censors all of us. The sad part is that this act is running off more legitimate users than trolls. Wait 10 minutes after an article has been posted and read at -1... All the trolls use http proxies and post anonomously to avoid Slashdot's censoring attacks.



Now ask yourself..... Why has the amount of posts dropped from 300 per artcile to 100 per article? And no, there wasn't 200 troll posts per article.

Much ado about Zimbabwe - Redux

...the more likely reason the grain was refused is that the Zimbabwe government is currently on a militaristic campaign to take land away from white farmers and give it to black ones as part of a Land Acquisition Act. President Mugabe can use the starvation of his own people to further cast blame on the white farmers and rally more support for the governments policies. Pretty good K5 article on the whole situation here.

Please note, also, that I'm not trying to make commentary on whether land distribution in Zimbabwe is right or not, only on the methods used by the government to achieve that end.

A word of caution, if you decide to learn go, expect to lose most of your first 50-100 games. It's a long road, but once you start making progress, you'll grow quickly. I know I sure have. Anyone who's up for a game look for 'jjarmoc' on KGS.

There was a really good article about Go on kuro5hin maybe three weeks ago. In fact, it caused me to start playing again and it still is much fun. :-)

Just try it. There are lots of free Go servers online. I prefer the KGS server. All you need is to download the client or just play it online in your browser with others (Java required). There are usually ~100 people online in the English room (yes, chat included).

it is very easy to buy ads on google. But 20$ on google brought less traffic to my site than a 10$ ad at K5.

As for journals... does anybody read them? I have to admit that I've never really participated in them, although I do get the occasional message when one of my "friends" (in the SlashCode sense) posts a journal entry.

I think journals tend to be rather hit or miss. In general, it seems that the more controvesial the topic, the more participation you get (assuming reasonable "advertising" measures, like linking it in your sig and getting others to do the same). I think RMS is a controversial enough topic that if you can present a well-written journal (and all signs point to "Yes" here), and can get the word out, then a good discussion may follow. Of course, you'll probably get trolled, but with luck you'll get a good discussion going.

If you're a little leary about Slashdot's journal system (with good reason, since journals here aren't very well publicized, might I suggest you consider developing a diary (or even submitting an editorial) over at Kuro5hin instead? The community aspect there seems a bit stronger, and for whatever reason K5 seems to have much fewer trolls than Slashdot. Slashdot would be a more appropriate forum for a discussion of RMS (and correlating topics, such as the GPL), but K5 may be a friendly home for such a discussion.

Well, I'm not too worried about that. I used to be capped, but with the recent changes, who can tell? I just want to keep my +2 bonus so I can spread my message to a wider audience. ;-)

• Broken moderation system, The whole point is to sort the gems from the crap, yet a lot of posts designed to make a LIVELY DISCUSSION are MODERATED as flamebait! Come on, not everyone likes X, but just because some one bashes it dosent mean its Flamebait. Flame bait is more useful for DIRECT INSULTS and not legitmate discussions.

Even over at my site, the number of intelligent people using moderation to reward people is far exceeded by the number of assbites who sit around and turn moderation into a pissing match. Fortunately, we don't get a lot of angsty whistleblowers pissing up a rope and posting shit metamod comments like yours. Thank God.
