Re:The story behind the story
I recommend you to study this even more closely, but here are some of the completely unbelievable things in this smear attempt against Assange:
"Their yellowpages site says they have been in business 5 years. http://www.yellowpages.com/hou...
Ok so how many times has this link been shared on reddit? I googled the URL specific to this site, and it's only come up three times. All within the last 24 hours.""This shady dating site claims to be the "ONLY Dating Site to ever partner with the UN Initiative" (Now that's fucking odd...) AND THEY JUST GOT KICKED OUT OF THE UN FIVE DAYS AGO?!?!"
"Todd Hammonds LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/to... (It's fucking nothing) But it does say he lives in SF. I'm in the Bay Area also, I could pay a visit to offices if we can actually find any legitimate offices...
Their Dating Site Eventbrite page. Only one event for the fastest growing dating website that has married 3,000 people since 2011???
Here is the LinkedIn of "Kate Hogan," this is the person who wrote the "Press Release" about ToddAndClare accusing Assange of sexual misconduct. https://www.linkedin.com/in/ka...
Of course she's got only 1 connection, and no other real information anywhere. Also, the phone number listed in the press release rings twice and then immediately disconnects. But it doesn't give a recording, it just says "call failed" I've never really experienced that. Anyway you'd think that someone who just put out a press release regarding the UN and Assange would have a working phone!
http://www.prweb.com/releases/...
Here's their bullshit subreddit: https://www.reddit.com/r/todda... (No posts in three months)
Here's their weird "book" that they wrote about starting their company 5 years ago. Notice how every review is exactly 189 days old and all are very short and positive. This is shilling no doubt about it. http://www.barnesandnoble.com/...""How can their site, registered 20 sep 2015, claim 3000 marriages by November 2 2015? http://m.imgur.com/6BqmZPY https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=..."
"Thanks to
/u/ChrissFinn for linking the email from Wikileaks that ToddAndClare originally sent to Assange to get all this started. They offer him $1 million dollars to do some sort of commercial. This is obviously a scam because they don't have a million dollars, they don't even have a legitimate mailing address or working fucking phone numbers! This was a set up from the very beginning!"" all users images are cropped and mirrored and can be reverse google image searched to other locations. Plus none of the employees seem to exist. Email between Jullian and T&C.com https://wikileaks.org/IMG/pdf/... -Honeypot to get him to accept russian funds and discredit his leaks, failed, so they accused him of pedophilia instead. When searched for. The ToddandClare business location is actually identical to this company "Premise Data Corporation" https://local.yahoo.com/info-1... Here you can view its team page http://www.premise.com/ourteam... Who's board of directors has guess who "Larry Summers" Who goes by "Lawrence Summers" in "The Center for American Progress" Superpac

Re: Elect Trump for Honest Government
Unless it brings the system down, it doesn't matter...
The system itself is broken...
That's how we got into Iraq, the fatuous logic that good motivations can't make a bad situation worse, often far, far worse.
But this kind of logic will always be with us, because it's a smug, tweetable, free pass on the hard work of coming up with and implementing a workable solution (and what idiot wants to attempt that anyway amid the boo-bird chorus of polarized politics?)
30 Shocking Domestic Violence Statistics That Remind Us It's An Epidemic
The Huffpo doesn't spin it this way, but these numbers are likely at the lowest levels since the invention of suburbia. I can't say much more than that, because before the invention of suburbia we probably weren't even keeping score.
The "system" is what brought a pretty terrible thing out of the closet. Sucks to be assaulted by a violent intruder? How about sharing your bed with a violent chest-thumper every damn day?
Software: Maintain or Replace?
But there is a tendency - fuelled by taxpayer money - to leap to replacement quickly, rather than doing maintenance. I have rarely seen a system improved by creating a new one...because the new one is loaded with the same flaws (indeed, new ones) as the legacy system that it replaced.
But of course, the hazards involved with ripping and replacing the current political system are much smaller than ripping and replacing some aging government cost-control system. I mean, gosh, look at how well rip and replace worked in Russia.
The Not-So-Great Professor: Jeffrey Sachs' Incredible Failure to Eradicate Poverty in Africa
The early sections of Nina Munk's book about the economist Jeffrey Sachs read like a celebration of a boy genius. No, strike that: Sachs piles up so many achievements so quickly that the word genius sounds somehow inadequate.
By the age of 13, he was taking college math. Later, he got near-perfect scores on his SATs and graduated summa cum laude from Harvard, where by 28 he was a tenured professor. Two years later, he was advising the Bolivian government on how to administer economic "shock therapy," designed to break the spell of hyperinflation. This led to an even bigger triumph: masterminding Poland's transition to a market economy in 1989, as communism collapsed in Eastern Europe.
Like most geeks, never seen a system he couldn't fix better. Until something blew up so spectacularly, he either got the grey beard gene forever, or curled up and hid in a closet somewhere.
Of course, if you watch enough superhero movies, you just need to put the word out ("the system is broken!") and somehow Jeffery will get the bat signal, and he'll patiently hand-stitch some brightly coloured, stretchy fabric (you'd be amazing what else he found in that stiff bottom drawer with all his grandmother's old Jane Fonda work-out videos) into the peacock man-cape he always dreamed about while he was acing his SATs (painstakingly ripping and replacing the crotch seam six times to achieve the optimally brash yet task-focused fit—they don't call him "Dr Sacks" for nothing) and then he'll spring out the window, and who knows, maybe he can actually fly. I guess we'll find out.
Either way, news at 11.
That all that matters these days.
Entertainment.

While ignoring age discrimination. The chances of someone over 40 being hired by Facebook is zero.

All About the H-1B
The tech executives just want to keep the gravy train of cheap, captive H-1B visa holders. I have been a Democrat all my life, donated many times to President Obama--and would vote for him again in a heartbeat. Hillary Clinton is the first Democratic presidential candidate in my life that I cannot support. I am senior enough in my field to have never had my personal job touched by an H-1B visa holder. (They are dishonest morons.) The way it's run, the entire H-1B visa program is a scam. So, I will be voting for Dr. Jill Stein. I will be damned if I will vote for Clinton. I've done that enough. She supports rich tech billionaires--not me--and I will return the favor. I would rather suffer through 4 years of Donald Trump instead of allowing Hillary Clinton to screw us.

The LinkedIn page for Cheryl Ann Fillekes, which only includes her education. Here is her professional experience from a different site. She is also suing Google for not hiring her as a programmer.
Her entire educational trajectory is in fields related to geophysics, but apparently she learned programming on the side. Her professional experience does sound interesting. Google contacted her four times for interviews, but decided each time not to hire her.

Agism? Or just out-of-date?
Even if it's true, how do you prove something like this? Younger programmers will, on average, have different qualifications. Younger programmers are less interested, on average, in quality of life issues.
"Heath applied for a job in 2011, when he was 60, and was denied employment even though he said he was perfectly qualified for the software engineering position and was deemed 'a great candidate' by a recruiter."
I'm sure agism exists - heck, it may even have been a factor in this case. But: what a recruiter tells you, or what you think of your own qualifications means exactly zip. Sounds to me more like someone is looking for a get-rich-quick retirement package, not least because this suit is based on a job application from 5 years ago (in 2011).
It seems likely that this is Robert Heath's LinkedIn page. I can't be sure, but I doubt there are too many people with that name, living in Florida, who are older Software Engineers. If his information is up-to-date (or at least was up-to-date in 2011), he is working with Java 5 (Java 6 was released in 2006, and we are now looking at Java 9). He apparently maintained the backend of web sites that import information in XML, and then present this information using standard web technologies. Nothing wrong with any of that, but nothing special about it either.

He's not. It's developed by a farm of Indian's working, ultimately, for Goldman Sachs.Ethereum is an IPO alt-coin (meaning it's a scam). The initial volume was fake (pre-arranged) in order to pump up value, as per usual.
I get that you see someone making a claim on the internet and your instinct is to assume it's bullshit. But what I don't get is why you spent time to Google "Ethereum" so you can throw out a challenge using "Vitalik Buterin" and not also spend the time to actually read about it.

Sadly, this paper will get batted around the internet and become more and more exaggerated by anyone with an anti-electric agenda like that idiot hit piece comparing a Prius to a Hummer. Yes, that thing is still quoted everywhere and always.

A free piston engine? Great! gimme a few. or do they get you on shipping and handling?

Re:Unknown Unknowns
Beyond that, there's the liability issues. Self driving cars will kill people [...] Until the legal framework for handling this is worked out [...]
Agreed, accidents will happen, but why is liability something that needs to be solved first? And who says it hasn't been already? Last year, Google, Mercedes, and Volvo announced their intentions to accept responsibility and liability for their cars in autonomous mode. More companies are likely to jump on board, but for those who don't, they're just following Tesla's lead and placing both the decision and liability on the driver.
Market forces will dictate which path wins, and the market is already capable of handling both approaches, so there's no reason why liability should be a sticking point.

Slashdot Flashback to 2006
Back in 2006, I was asked on Slashdot what my advice would be to students interested in a career in AI. I told them to get their PhD under Hutter. Hutter's first students were founders of Google DeepMind thence AlphaGo.
I'm now, as then, advising investment in compression prizes for the same reason*. (And thanks to Matt Mahoney for pointing me to Hutter's AIXI theory way back then.)
*An additional reason today is founding "friendly AI" on understanding natural language. Before "friendliness", however one defines it, can be achieved, misunderstandings must be avoided.

What "IT Worker" means
According to his LinkedIn account, Leo Perrero was an "Application Developer Specialist" at Walt Disney Parks and Resorts, with his previous job being "Intel Systems Administrator" at IBM Global Services.
Based on his positions and skill recommendations, it looks like he was a SysAdmin mainly, and perhaps did some scripts that got him the "Application Developer Specialist" title.
I appreciate good SysAdmins, but most don't really need a college degree, and actually one of the best SysAdmins I ever met was a high school dropout.
In the upcoming virtualized, cloud world, SysAdmins could be based anywhere, and DevOps is going to reduce the number of admins per server.

Re:video transmission
In fairness, the LED may be directly connected to the transmitter, and when the transmitter is on, the LED is on.
If that had been the case they'd have said so, but they didn't. They left us to wonder, which means the truth is uncharitable. People brag on their bragworthy bullet points. We are talking about a PR flack here, they are quoted as a spokesperson.
... correction, she is quoted as "a spokesperson", and in fact is currently a "Senior PR Manager" there. So she's an expert at telling bullshit lies, like "when Nest Cam is turned off, it completely stops transmitting video to the cloud, meaning it no longer observes its surroundings". Well no, that's not that that means, and only an idiot PR flack with no knowledge of the product or even computing in general could believe such idiocy. The whole argument is that the LED should tell you when the camera has been activated, because an attacker who has compromised your device isn't going to turn the LED on for you when they fire up a program to stream from your camera to their computer. Either she is too stupid to understand that, and should be prevented from making more public statements that demonstrate her stupidity, or she is a lying piece of shit who is deliberately defrauding customers (and others) about the security of the device and the relevance of the LED. Either way, she should be an embarrassment to Nest.

It appears that both the server and client are multi-platform, possibly as Java packages.
https://www.linkedin.com/pulse...
As that page says, "The Client was coded in Java to support as many OS as possible. It requires the Java Version 7 and is extremely persistent.", although it "supports less features" on OS X, Linux, and other "Unix machines".
Presumably it runs as root if it "You can view, create, delete, rename, download, copy and move all files & folders on your clients machine.", unless the ability to do that to all files and folders is one of those features not supported on UN*Xes. (Can you turn off rootless mode on OS X 10.11 with this tool?)

Even better: it appears that both the client and server are multi-platform. They claim you can control your victims from an Android device as well. Recall Women's Participation Used to Be Higher
As a top-level response to all the young men saying "women just don't want to code -- the end", you should be aware that the proportion of women in software engineering used to be much higher. In 1984, 23% of U.S. computer science degree holders were women; as of 2013 it had slid down to 15%. See graph here:

There is something really regressive and ugly that's happened in the culture of software engineering in the meantime. Some of it's even intentionally manufactured by right-wing/libertarian technologists like Peter Thiel:
