Re:Oh yeah, that ...
I must have missed the announcement also, but just this weekend at my local LUG (KaLUG) this was the topic of a two hour presentation.

Re:Compiling Anyway
If you have dependency problems in Debian, you need to learn how to use you distro. Seriously. Let me recycle this comment. Or look into the docs. (4th link on google for 'debian "security fix" version' btw.).

There should have
"Ask Bruce Perens" section, or icon for Bruce.
:)
Nice move Bruce. Do you think they'd publish opensource book for other languages, like this one? Can I submit those opensource document even I'm not the author, provided that we credit where its due? -
RedHat is mollycoddling Chinese dictators
While it's great that the world's most populous nation is adopting open source, there is one problem with it: the leadership of China are some of the most brutal and flagrant abusers of human rights, and companies such are Red Hat are catering to their notion that Taiwan is a "Renegade Province" and somehow belongs to China, when the opposite is true.
Formosa (Taiwan) was never controlled by China, and China only wants to siphon off its strong capitalist economy and end the most basic freedoms in the country to exercise hegemony.
Most notably, RedHat has removed the Taiwanese Flag from RedHat 8.0 to appease China's ruling Communist Party -- this is an insult to the Taiwanese, who value their freedom and independence, and are constantly under the threat of a Chinese communist attack by China, and RedHat is disavowing their very right to exist by removing the flag.
Put [The Taiwanese] National Flag Back! -
Re:UI changes
For those who browse without sigs
Redhat kowtows to China
And to the moderators--saying something bad about a Linux distributor doesn't automatically make a comment flamebait. Sometimes it's true. -
Re:Taiwan Ceases to exist, according to RedHat.Apparantly, in order to improve sales in China, RedHat removed the Taiwanese flag
The amazing thing about this is that it seems to be on all versions of RH8 that this has happened (not just the ones sold to China) - so the versions sold in Taiwan won't even have their flag ...
The Taiwan Linux UG have an online petition to reinstate the flag. -
Put Back Taiwan Flag!
In the newly release redhat 8.0 distribution, we Taiwanese users found that our national flag (the national flag of the Republic of China) was removed from the KDE 3.0 Control Center. No doubt, the Republic of China is a country, and the modification made by you guys is nothing but an evil political attack against our nationality. Please show your respect that all KDE developers/users from Taiwan deserve. http://www.linux.org.tw/rh8-kde/

CLE is a good choice
CLE (Chinese Linux Extension) may be a good choice for you. Initially it was based on RH, then slackware, mandrake and SuSE are also supported. The newest version of CLE is called GAGA20020625, which is based on RH 7.3. You can find more information at CLE and download GAGA at ftp. For more information of Chinese support on Linux, check out the Linuxfab, which contains a forum on office suite for Linux.

Oh... some other players in this arena....
I have come up a few other players in this arena, competition is good. of course
;-)- Thizlinux
- Chinese 2000, based on Chinese Language Extension, packaged with Hancom Office Suite
- Chinee Language Extension they patches Red Hat and Slackware! for a Chinese desktop, may be regarded as the "mother" of Chinese localization
- Turbo linux, don't know what they're doing in Chinese Linux desktop recently
btw, the one reviewed in the newsforge.com is 2.4 desktop. version 3.0 is coming (sorry, no more English and Traditional Chinese installation screens, only Simplified Chinese is available) and I've tried the beta CD, quite OK for normal use but some installation gliches.
Also... a Chinese-enabled desktop is possible (just click "Chinese" during install..) by the normal Debian/Mandrake/RedHat CDs.

Re: Close, but not quite...? = di (ordinal prefix)
? = yi (one)
? = gang (post, as in "position" or "job")What you want is (I think) di-yi kan (publish) or perhaps di-yi yan (word)... Anyone else know for sure?
Sorry, I can't supply the GB codes, as I don't have xcin on this machine. And, after multiple tries, I can't get Slashcode to accept your originals (cut-n-pasted) without converting them to question marks. (How'd you do that?)

Re:My chinese labmates use Windows becauseWell, I'm in mainland US. Not too many CLE distros available that I've seen.
:-)You might start by checking out this listof foreign language distros. You'll find links to two Chinese language distros there: BluePoint Linux, which the site describes as the most-used distro in mainland China, and Linpus Linux, which is the biggest distro in Taiwan and (I understand) also has a fair market share on the mainland.
Chinese Language Extensions (CLE) can also be downloaded separately.
I can't speak to the programming aspects of the CLE distros, but as far as general use Chinese support goes, they're quite good.

Linux @ TaiwanAs you guys mention about Taiwan, I've to say something.
First of all, Taiwan is a different CONTURY from China. We stand on the biggest hardware vender of the world. We do have some BSD/Linux user here in Taiwan.
I've wrote a page about Linux @ Taiwan one years ago, you can check the Linux @ Taiwan for the old document. This is an pretty old document, and there are more progess going on here in Taiwan.
We have CLE(Chinese Linux Extension) here in http://cle.linux.org.tw/. Sorry for no English version avaliable now. From CLE, there are RedHat, Mandrake, Suse, Slackware, Debian Chinese packages. You can see Mandrake Taiwan, KDE Taiwan, and there is also an i18n project for translate Linux project. A Chinese input project in XCIN Project, and a CLDP Project.
Recently, we also have a Software liberty Association for improve the opensource in Taiwan.
Above are only a few information I know about Linux @ Taiwan. As for BSD @ Taiwan, I also know few BSD committer who spent lots of time on Chinese support for BSD.
Anyway, for those who help the Chinese on Linux/BSD, I've to say THANKS to you all.

Easy to follow (Re:GPL in Chinese?)
Like the Chinese follow REGULAR software license agreements ??? 90% of the stuff they use in the government ministries is pirated.
China breaks EULAs because it's too poor to afford purchasing licenses.
What makes you think they care about the Linux GPL ??
IANAL, but all it needs to do to comply with GNU GPL is include the source code on the CDs it burns for Chinese GNU/Linux users. Now how tough is that?
Oh, by the way, here's your GPL in Chinese. It's an unofficial translation, but I think the government will understand it.

Re:Gasp! You mean there's another distro than RHAT
hmm... AFAIK there is a project called Chinese Language Extension (CLE). They have incorporated many useful Chinese programs, fonts, input methods and such into RH disto. For some time they posted their wanted to port the CLE to other distos like s.u.s.e and slackware.. but i donno how far has been done. If you are interested, go to give a hand
:)
