Re:Modern-Day Galileo
"We've known about evolution for about 150 years and have had all that time to collect data but the same cannot be said for climatology as an actual science."
Fourier predicted the properties of CO2 in the 1820's, Faraday confirmed his prediction in the 1850's, Arrhenius first proposed the idea of AGW in 1896, the National Academies of Science warned the US government it had detected a strong AGW signal in the 1950's. The IPCC is widely regarded by scientists as the most robust review of any scientific question ever undertaken by manking. But yes, evolution and AGW still have their "skeptics". -
Data sources
They've also refused to disclose their raw data, or even a list of what data they used.
Let's pick on GISTEMP since they've open-sourced their analysis code. From their site:
The current analysis uses surface air temperatures measurements from the following data sets: the unadjusted data of the Global Historical Climatology Network (Peterson and Vose, 1997 and 1998), United States Historical Climatology Network (USHCN) data, and SCAR (Scientific Committee on Antarctic Research) data from Antarctic stations.
Links to these data sources are provided in the documentation of their freely available analysis software:

complete record for this rural station
(thanks to Hans Erren who reported it to GISS on July 16, 2003)They've gone as far as ignoring FOIA requests to the point where NASA will soon be facing litigation.
The FOIA requests do not request data or data sources. CEI is asking for documentation, such as memos or e-mail, of discussions related to several topics including RealClimate.org and the error McIntyre discovered. Read it in their own words.
They can open-source all the algorithms they want, but without showing their data, it's completely useless.
Now that you have the data as well, we look forward to your analysis.

Primitive technology. What you really wanted was to build a ballista (the field artillery version of a crossbow). 40' yew trees for the two arms should give you a respectable range.

Re:Sounds like a logical fallacy to me
How about selectively OMITTING THE INCONVENIENT DATA THAT DOESN'T FIT? Here:
"I do not question the extreme nature of the summer of 2003, however, using the Pfister index, this summer would rank 3 only in June and August, the 2003 summer index so equals 1536, 1540 1616 and 1947. The first three hot summers are are notably absent in your reconstruction."
http://members.lycos.nl/errenwijlens/co2/errenvslu terbacher.htm
Come on! This is a fraud!
Note: this does NOT mean that global warming isn't happening: it may be happening, it may be not happening. What we do know, though, that such frauds as typically get published do not support the theory! -
Re:Wild extrapolation here we come...
You left out a few things in your attempt tp recruit Fox News viewers: Tree ring samples from around the planet indicate longer growing seasons and warmer growing seasons in the last 150 years, the fact that the AVERAGE temperature across the Artic is increasing at twice the rate of the rest of the planet, that glaciers on mountains across the planet are in retreat, and that sea temperatures from Antartica to the Arctic are rising
I just love it how dumb (and anonymous) morons throw Fox News charges aroudn (FYI, I'm not American and haven't ever seen Fox News on TV, just a few clips on the internet) - that kind of shows how dumb they really are, if that is ALL that they are able to project on their critics. Kind of shows who's the dumb and sentimental party around. Ad rem:
Tree rings:
"Hot and Cold Summers (23 Aug 04)
A paper titled "European seasonal and annual temperature variability, trends, and extremes since 1500" was published in the issue dated March 5, 2004, of the AAAS magazine named Science. It seems that the authors concluded that the summer of 2003 was the hottest summer in Europe since 1500.
It also seems than Hans Erren does not share that conclusion, and in an article at A debatable European summer temperature since 1500 he suggests that the summer of 1540 rivals the summer of 2003 in the category of hot European summers.
Among the points of contention are the accuracy of tree ring, and other, proxies for temperatures, as well as the validity of extrapolation of small geographic area information to large geographic areas. You may find the discussion interesting.
Let me mention an aspect that particularly caught my attention. In the comparison of the Luterbacher et al. graph with a graph based on the Pfister index, the Pfister index indicates that the notorious summer of 1816 was particularly cold, which seems quite plausible to me; the Luterbacher et al. graph does not, which seems not quite so plausible to me.
Was there a tree ring problem, an extrapolation problem, or what?"

Ice mass: lost the link somewhere, but there have been credible papers published that the total ice mass of Antarctide is actually GAINING in recent years. Similar with e.g. Pacific temperatures, they've been falling.
Oh, and last but not least: the pre-industrial levels of CO2 (claimed 280-290 CO2 ppmv before Industrial Revolution) have been FALSIFIED. Heard me? It's a FRAUD.
How does THAT reflect on the credibility of people making such claims? -
Re:cheaper than walmart in the brick & mortar
Hell, people open a package of cookies, eat 2 or 3, and then throw it on the ground and the managers do nothing.
Here in Amsterdam the staff might kill you, or at least beat you up, for behaviour like that. We have had quite a number of cases of excessively violent citizen arrests by staff in the last few years. -
Re:Science is hard
Ubelievable, I spent two hours answering this crap, and then firefox closed the wrong tab and it all went poof.
That's a very valid criticism of the climate models of around 1985. Slab oceans are not used in state-of-the-art climate models.
Climateprediction.net uses a slab model of the ocean and will until at least revision three (they are on revision one now). NEC's Earth Simulator got it's first "non-shallow" ocean model in the 2003-2004 timeframe, but it is still at over twice the spatial resolution as the atmosphere is calculated. These are only the two most cited and "modern" models. NASA has a model that does the ocean, or the atmosphere, but not both at once. Your statement is *wholly* false. I had citations for both of these, but 10 seconds on Google will find the NEC Earth Simulator Annual Report for 2003, and Climate Prediction makes no secret of their model's shortcomings on their science page.
Well, nature set things up that way too. It's been known since the 1890s.
But Arrhenius was wrong. This paper is cited prominently by IPCC, and is off by a factor of some 1800%.
um, ever hear of an equation of state?
That would be fine if they included all states, but they don't. Why? It's too complicated to solve. The main items are Pressure, Density, Volume, and Temperature. NEC's Earth Simulator solves for Pressure and Temperature, and ignores the density and volume. Their own paper says the problem is just "too hard" so they treat air as an "incompressible medium". Yikes. The paper I have on this is by the authors of the algorithm. It is, however, located on a laptop at work, and thus inaccessable. It came from the Internet and "Google" is your friend.
Unfortunately, you show no signs of knowing what computer models are in use, why, or how they relate to the science.
Hmm, 20 years in the Computer Science industry, check. Several years working on massively parallel environment simulation models, check. Access to Physicists, Meterologists, Aerodynamic Engineers (the fluid dynamics gurus), and Oceanologists, check. Just because I typed the original message as I was trying to run out the door, doesn't make me what you think I am. Tell me, what is your knowledge of thermal transfer between discrete interhaline countercurrents? How about "meddies"? Do you know their cause, and the effect they have on deep ocean salinity transit? Heck, I'll throw you an easy one, why is ClimatePrediction's "Gravitic Wave" model of precipitation and cloud formation 180 degrees out of sync with actual oragraphic precipitation and formation?
And as for your precious computer models, here's a score card so far. My favorite is the model that says the Medieval Optimum never happened. Damn the History Books, full speed ahead.
Where? The Mars matter is addressed here.
Ahhh, I knew "RealClimate" would make it in here sooner or later. This is one of their better rants: Glacial Melting on Mars = Regional Variation -- Glacial Melting on Earth = Global Warming.
It's right up there with their near hysterical explanation of the historical lag between CO2 levels and warming trends where they claim that it's because the first warming isn't CO2, but then the CO2 causes the rest of the warming. The fact that histrically CO2 increase is a symptom of rising temperatures and not a cause. My favorite line in the comments is "Wow! Are you really saying that we have no idea what starts to warm up our world from an ice age but know with near certainty what has caused the warming of the last three decades? But go ahead, I get a good laugh out of it. If you want, post a note asking what the "Hockey Stick" looks like without the near-treeline Bristlecone Pines included. See if your comment get's censored... something they're notoriou -
Re:100+ MPG Honda InsightWell, let's do a comparison, shall we?
1994 Geo Metro XFi
1 liter, 3 cylinder, 49 HP
1621 pounds
53/58 MPG (55 MPG combined)
Head Room: 37.8 in. front, 36.5 in. rear
Shoulder Room: 51.6 in. front, 50.5 in. rear
Hip Room: 51.1 in. front, 42.5 in. rear
Leg Room: 42.5 in. front, 29.8 in. rear
Passenger Capacity: 4
Average price: $2,072
2000 Honda Insight
1 liter, 3 cylinder, 67 HP (plus electric motor)
1850 pounds
61/70 MPG (65 MPG combined)
Head Room: 38.8 in. front
Shoulder Room: 50.5 in. front
Hip Room: 48.7 in. front
Leg Room: 42.9 in. front
Passenger Capacity: 2
Average price: $10,658
1988 Honda CRX HF
1.5 liter, 4 cylinder, 62 HP
1819 pounds
45/53 MPG (48 MPG combined)
Head Room: 37.0 in. front
Shoulder Room: 53.5 in. front
Hip Room: 54.9 in. front
Leg Room: 40.8 in. front
Passenger Capacity: 2
Average price: $3,282
As you can see, the Geo Metro weighs only 200 pounds less than the Honda Insight or Honda CRX, has comparable front passenger room, and can carry two extra passengers! It also gets better milage than the CRX, and costs $1,000 less than the (6 years older) CRX and more than $8,000 less than the Insight. So, if the goal is low-cost commuting, the Metro is the best value.

On the left.. whew, she's smoking.. damn, oh ya, and another.., and another :), nice... who's that chick beside her ? I'd do em both., come to daddy.. oh ya.. ...
Here's the directory listing I linked those pictures from.. be gentle.
anyways, for the good of the community, someone paste an authentic nude shot of this chick. Thanks. -

Re:Interesting Article
Umm... no. The problem of DLL hell is because programs (including Windows) all throw their DLLs into the winnt\system folder. New versions of DLLs overwrite old versions, files get left behind during uninstalls, etc. All this contributes to the long-standing problem of "DLL hell". Simply allowing multiple/separate copies in memory is something that all OSes (including Windows) have been able to do for many, many, many years.
Umm... no. If you had done your own research, you would have found out that Windows XP does not allow random programs to overwrite DLL files in the system folder using System File Protection (SFP). Instead it will write the file to another location and keep track of the separate DLL through was is known as a manifest. When the application requests for that specific version of the DLL, the manifest will provide it for the application. For more info, see:

Mad Max
Personally I like:
It's a bit like the scene in Mad Max 2--The Road Warrior, where Mel Gibson and his clan of post-apocalyptic misfits finally get tired of being attacked and decide to turn the tables on The Humongous and his marauding leather-clad baddies.
odd .. Darl McBride does look a bit like the gimp - they had tied to the front of one of their cars .. just dye his hair blonde and put in him one of those skin tight leather S+M outfits -
What I Want
This is my dream remote setup:
All of my CDs are ripped and stored on my computer. (Like many other people out there.) I run Linux and have the xmms LIRC plugin and patch that allows you to type in a three digit number and load a CD. (eg. If I want to listen to Tom Petty's Greatest Hits, I punch in "630" on a remote and hit load on my IR remote. It's an awesome jukebox setup for common CDs that I have memorized, but there is no way I want to memorize 700+ of them.
I want more! I would love to have a Palm Pilot with hacked IR hardware (... because of that pesky distance issue) that can store a complete list of my music and send the corresponding IR commands to my computer.
The thing that drives me crazy is that it's totally possible with the technology available now! Palms have database programs that far exceed what I would need, and Omni remote is far in advance of what would be required also. If I had any Palm programming experience whatsoever, I would try and hack something together.
Is there any sort of open source anything for the Palm platform that would allow this type of interfacing easily? I'm thinking Python/Perl.
Any hints? -
Re:Balls != Smart, so what?A phat car like the Mercedes 300SL, even though you may have altered it beyond recognition, is still after fifty years time a more than respectable vehicle.
Your average clear case modded PC, OTOH, will be worthless in ten years time.
So what you have is this huge contingent of young male hobbyists discovering computers (games, really), then deciding to soup up their gear, "just like" cars. They just lack the historical perspective to see that their creations, unlike those of car enthusiasts, have virtually no lasting value whatsoever.

Mirrors part 1Note: This mirror list has been copied from http://www.humpin.org/decss/, on January 2nd 2000 13:13 GMT
Mirrors since 28-Dec-99 added by me.
To my main DVD page (containing list of lists of mirrors) Visit Humpin! (No, it's not what you think!)
Temporary restraining order DENIED!
Thanks to the efforts of the Electronic Frontier Foundation and the organization and support provided by a few of our fellow defendants we are still here! Another hearing is scheduled for January 14th.
We would like to point out to all of the mirror sites with things like "fuck the lawyers" on them that it is because of a generous group of lawyers that we are still here. These lawyers are working for free (or much less than they could get by going over to the Dark Side) and don't deserve this kind of abuse.
Here is the EFF's stance on this case.
If you need a REAL reason to host these files, try reading this. Truth has never been more purely distilled.Save a copy of this web page now!
We have just been informed that the DVD Copy Control Association is seeking a restraining order against us (named as "Doe 28") for distributing DeCSS and linking to pages that distribute it and linking to pages that link to pages that distribute it.
Section 48 of this request states that we supposedly "have received notice through the MPA and refused to remove the information at issue". This is absolutely false! We have never received any such request (from the MPA or anybody else for that matter) and we obviously were not given the opportunity to refuse! Either Jared Bobrow needs to go back to law school or the DVD CCA needs to get a new firm. This is the kind of sloppy work that could get an important document thrown out.
Here is a 2600 story on this.
Explanation on legality of this information
The software (source as well as binaries) offered on this site can be freely redistributed because it was published under the GNU General Public License. The purpose of this software is not illegal copying of DVD disks. It is meant to provide information necessary to be able to program a DVD player for Linux. To do this, the CSS system needs to be incorporated in the player. Recently the (very weak) DVD content scrambling system was deciphered, freeing the way for a Linux DVD player. The CSS system is not a copy protection system, since it does not prevent copying of the disk. Writing information about the way an encryption scheme functions is completely legal. The source code and binaries on this site are completely legal too, since they contain no code from the DVD consortium or its members. The sources and programs on this site were written by third parties using clean-room reverse engineering methods which are (ready?) completly legal.
Attention www.rhythm.cx was hosting a list of mirrors for these files. That list of mirrors has been replaced with a page reading "This site has been taken down for legal reasons." Here's what the maintainer put on the site the day it was shut down:
NOTE (Thu, Nov 11, 12:17pm EST): I've recently been informed that a law firm which is likely to be one that would try get these mirrors taken down has been visiting this mirror site as well as others. With that said, there is a possibility that I may have to remove this site in the near future because like everyone else, I can't afford to go to court to fight it. Luckly, it seems fairly unlikely that any law firm will ever be able to get rid of all these mirrors at this point (there are currently 41 in 8 different countries and this list is growing every day). However, I have only seen very few mirror _lists_ like this one anyplace. If anyone has the resources, it might be wise to mirror this list of mirrors as well so that the right people will still know that these mirrors exist.
Here is a 2600 story with more details on how rhythm.cx was shut down.
Current Mirrors Last updated: Fri, Dec 31, 8:18pm EST
Numbers are only for the maintainer's convenienceMuch thanks to this site for listing mirrors of the mirror lists.

OOPS - Trying Humpin list againYou have one bat and there are 100 million holes Visit Humpin!
Current Mirrors Last updated: Thu, Dec 30, 2:55am EST
Numbers are only for the maintainer's convenienceMuch thanks to this site for listing mirrors of the mirror lists.

MirrorsYou have one bat and there are 100 million holes Visit Humpin! (No, it's not what you think!)
Save a copy of this web page now!
Current Mirrors Last updated: Wed, Dec 29, 3:14pm EST

This page was originally a mirror of http://www.rhythm.cx/dvd/, but then rhythm.cx was forced down.
So I've taken it on myself to keep a list of mirrors. I try to update and check the status of the listed sites at least once per day. If you know of any mirrors not in my list, if you wish to mirror this page, or if you find that any of the listed sites went down, then contact me.

Mirrors - Now more than 70!!!!Oh yeah
Visit Humpin! (No, it's not what you think!)
Explanation on legality of this information:
Attention
www.rhythm.cx was hosting a list of mirrors for these files.
UPDATE: Here is a 2600 story with more details on how rhythm.cx was shut down.
I have taken it upon myself to mirror the mirrors. So until such time as the hounds of hell come a-knocking at my door, I present for you this list:

mirrorsThe software (source as well as binaries) offered on this site can be freely redistributed. It was written by authors who expressly permitted and encourage the redistribution of this software and information. The purpose of this software is not, I repeat not illegal copying of DVD disks. It is meant to provide information neccesary to be able to program a DVD player for Linux. To do this, the CSS system needs to be incorporated in the player. Recently the (very weak) content scrambling system was deciphered, freeing the way for a Linux DVD player. The CSS system is not a copy protection system, since it does not prevent copying of the disk. Writing information about the way a certain protection scheme functions is completely legal. The source code and binaries on this site are completely legal too, since they contain no code from the DVD consortium or one of its members. The sources and programs on this site are purely written by 3rd parties using clean-room reverse engineering methods, which is, again, completely legal. This software and information below make it possible for people who legally obtained their DVD movies to view them on their Linux systems.
Attention
www.rhythm.cx was hosting a list of mirrors for these files.
UPDATE: Here is a 2600 story with more details on how rhythm.cx was shut down.
I have taken it upon myself to mirror the mirrors. So until such time as the hounds of hell come a-knocking at my door, I present for you this list:

Mirrors Updatedcss-auth source and DeCSS mirrors Here is the most recent version of the css-auth CVS code as well as DeCSS. Please mirror & redistribute. This site has limited bandwidth, try to use a mirror first. Please mail additional mirrors and broken links to altair@rhythm.cx.
If anyone has the resources, it might be wise to mirror this list of mirrors as well so that the right people will still know that these mirrors exist.
css-auth.tar.gz - The code form an open source DVD project.
