Re:Audiophiles = suckers
The worst scam is whatever cables Monster Cable is currently selling.
Not really. At least the cables that Monster is selling are just over priced cables that actually function as such. This company should probably be pictured right next to the definition of modern snake oil.

Re:forethought
I know there are a lot of audiophiles who have good things to say about the Apple products.
Do they use a green marker on the edge of their iPhone too? Or tape Brilliant Pebbles to the headphone jack? What about the Blackbody? Just curious.

Re:Oh for goodness sake
Yeah, there's some really crazy stuff out there. Wilson Audio is always a good for a laugh. The prices you mentioned are change compared to The WAMM Master Chronosonic speaker. I think they go for $700K/ pair.
Remember those $1K Denon Ethernet cables? AudioQuest now has one that's $10K.
But my all time favorite is still Machina Dynamica. Because taping a bag of $160 dollar rocks to your RCA cables is going to improve the sound. Or their $30 dollar outlet plate. The best one from them is a bargain at just $60. It's called the Teleportation Tweak. For $60 they improve your TV and audio system by playing 20 seconds of noise, over your phone.

Re:Market idea
Have you considered using Machina Dynamica's Brilliant Pebbles instead?
What the heck is it? Brilliant Pebbles is a unique and comprehensive system for tuning the room and audio system based on special physical properties of highly symmetrical crystal structures. Brilliant Pebbles has been evolving since its introduction 6 years ago at the London HI Fi Show, especially the number of applications, many of which were discovered by our customers. Brilliant Pebbles addresses specific resonance control and RFI/EMI absorption problems associated with audio electronics, speakers and cables, as well as acoustic wave problems associated with the listening room boundaries and the 3-dimensional space within the boundaries. Brilliant Pebbles comprises a number of precious and semi-precious stones (crystals) selected for their effectiveness. The original glass bottles for Brilliant Pebbles have been replaced by clear zip lock bags, which have a more linear response than glass. We employ a number of highly-specialized, proprietary techniques in the preparation/assembly of Brilliant Pebbles to enhance the crystals' inherent characteristics. The fundamental operating principle of Brilliant Pebbles involves a number of atomic mechanisms in the crystals. Brilliant Pebbles will enhance the performance of your audio system so your favorite music and even your experience playing online fantasy games will become a mind blowing auditory experience.

Re:Denon Gold Plated Ethernet Cables
Nothing will ever beat the Machina Dynamica's Brilliant Pebbles. They even boast about how they replaced the original glass jar with a plastic zip-lock bag for better frequency response.
At least the signal passes through Denon's cable. Machina Dynamica recommend taping the pebbles to the audio cable, and then putting a few more bags on the corners of the room. Why am I wasting my time working five days a week when I could be selling bags of pebbles for $160 each?!

I really wonder if the guy running this site even believes in his own products, or if he is gleefully exploiting the gullible. Products include "The Clever Little Clock" which seems to be an ordinary travel alarm clock with magical powers, "The Super Intelligent Chip" which not only improves the sound of your CDs, but does so permanently (by altering the structure of the CD in some hand-waving "quantum" fashion), his new product, "The Quantum Temple Bell", a decorated bell you walk around your house ringing and your audio sounds better, and my favorite "The Teleportation Tweak" where he calls you and plays magical tones through your phone, and your audio sounds better afterward.

Re:How sillilly obvious
Consider for example that many DJs now are moving, or have moved away from vinyl, to various forms of computer based system, even for 'scratching'.
Dude, you could not have picked a worse example. The popularity of the vinyl LP is one the rise. Perhaps a hipster fad, perhaps not -- if Monster Cables and Brilliant Pebbles can find places in home audio, I think the LP can find a niche.

To those who would reply in harshness...
Hello. I am a Bible believing slashdotter. My college degree is in theoretical physics at a state university. My beliefs have never caused a serious permanent conflict with my education. Many people here would tell me that it should. They bash and mock young-earthers or any number of beliefs which *they* see as irreconcilable with science. Just a couple of things I want to point out:
1) Many *many* scientific advances have been made by deeply religious men and funded by a church. This is true historically and into our modern era. If you want a citation, use google.
2) Yes, there are religious people who do not understand science and say things that make us science folk cringe. That is not an excuse to bash religion or faith. That will not endear you to anyone or further scientific education. Remember there are also loony unscientific atheists, agnostics, as well as people of any other philosophical or religious persuasion. Pseudo-science is *not* the exclusive domain of the religious.
Do you want the general public to treat scientist and nerds the way some of you treat religious people? "Hey, a scientist sold me these brilliant pebbles. It turns out it's a crock - all scientist must be idiots! After all, this guy claiming to be a scientist is." We could all list countless failures by honest and dishonest men of science. Would you like the general public to lump you all together with ridicule and discard any science that has ever been touched or used by one of these men? They would throw out all of science! I am asking for you to be kind and understanding. It is possible to point out weaknesses in someone's theory without scorn and ridicule and without trying to trash their beliefs because of it. That will only alienate most people.
Defending an idea with bad science does not make the idea wrong - only the defense. -

Re:You're accidentally correct
Let me guess, you're using some of those "danceable" speaker cables?
What I don't get is why audiophiles are so into claiming vinyl sounds better than CD because it has greater frequency range, but at the same time ignore other digital recording formats support up to 96kHz (such as SACD/DVD-Audio)?
I'm 100% behind you. If the music industry honestly adopted SACD or DVD-Audio, I would absolutely use that. Honestly, those formats have died a stillborn death. There is much more new vinyl released today than SACDs.
I'm not a believer in fancy speaker cables-- I can't hear the difference. The audio rocks and clocks guys are complete BS. However, if you can't hear the difference between a 200 dollar integrated stereo and an intentionally designed high-fi system, you haven't tried. -

Re:Server?
Don't forget the Brilliant Pebbles; they reduce comb filter effects caused by very high sound pressure levels that develop in the corners when music is playing - as much as 3 or 4 times higher than the average sound pressure level in the room!! The Large size Brilliant Pebbles is also effective on tube amp Output Transformers; on top of speaker cabinets; and on armboards of turntables. Other effective locations include on top of Tube Traps; on side walls at the first reflection points; on the wall behind the listener position at points of high pressure; or anywhere in the 3 dimensional space of the room where a sharp rise in sound pressure relative to the average sound pressure in the room is measured using a test tone and sound pressure meter.

How will this breakthough affect the price of this
Machina Dynamica's The New Intelligent Chip (MD-20)
This is a question that audiophiles worldwide are asking themselves.
Will they be able to treat more CDs and get better sound reproduction at a reasonable price using this new Quantum Dot technology?

Audiophiles are amazing. They're the only group I can think of that make Scientology, ID true believers AND flat earthers look like rationalists.
Check out the the ultimate in audioweenie gear. Magic rocks you tape to your cables, magic clocks, and "audio tuneups" transmitted through your phone!
I'll bet if I tape those magic rocks to the super ethernet cable and put that clock on top of my server, I can probably get a 20 jillion teraquad internet connection over the POTS line.

Audiophile-grade wall outlet covers
Machina Dynamica's Tru-Tone Duplex Cover. Yes, an audiophile-grade wall outlet cover plate. $30.
Machina Dynamica's Tru-Tone Duplex Cover is a special audiophile-grade cover for all duplex wall outlets; they are intended to replace all types of duplex covers - steel, plastic, wood, etc. - in the listening room -- including non-audio outlets and unused outlets. One or two Tru-Tone Covers can make a significant improvement, however we suggest a baseline of 3-4 Duplex Covers in the room for best results. Tru-Tone Duplex Outlet Covers produce a remarkable degree of focus, detail and presence.
The thing appears to be an absolutely standard plastic cover plate. This isn't about replacing the receptacle, which might be of some value if it was badly worn and causing voltage drops under load. It's just the plastic cover plate.

Re:anything from machina dynamica
Your post needs to be modded up. That URL was great. I particularly enjoyed the power outlet covers at http://www.machinadynamica.com/machina44.htm.
"IMPORTANT NOTE: When installing the Tru-Tone Duplex Cover, the screw should be loosened about One Full Turn from the point when it is nearly tight. To avoid cracking the Tru-Tone Duplex Cover material, the screw should not be overtightened at any time."
Which sounds like the old mechanic's joke, "Tighten it until it strips, then back off half a turn."
Only $99 for a set of four, in a special package deal which covers their suggested baseline install. -

Re:All the things true Audiophile needs....
The best is the Itelligent Chip that improves Cd playback by just placing it on the CD player. It apparently uses quantum entanglement to force the laser into a more controlled beam and prevent extra data lossy light from escaping through holes in the chassis. INSANE!!! http://www.machinadynamica.com/machina64.htm

Intelligent chip!
Obviously Blu-Ray DVD owners should have bought an Intelligent Chip and this wouldn't have happened. The "quantum material" would have upgraded and fixed all of their problems!

Another Dave Clark review -- Clever Little Clock
I wonder if this is the same Dave Clark that's raved over Geoff Kait's Machina Dynamica ?
If no one's taken a look you really should -- by placing these little orange-stickered Casio clocks in the same room you reap amazing improvements in sound quality. Kait will also upgrade your stereo over the phone....
Browse around a while, it's priceless! -
Sorry, for "Rediculous" this one has you beat
Sorry, this one has you beat by about 25AU
To Quote:
The Teleportation Tweak is the phenomenal new product from Machina Dynamica. The Teleportation Tweak is an advanced communications technique discovered and developed by Machina Dynamica for upgrading audio systems remotely -- even over very long distances. The Teleportation Tweak has a profound effect on the sound and is performed during a phone call to Machina Dynamica; the phone call can be made via landline or cell phone from any room in the house. The tweak itself takes about 30 seconds. ...
The effects of the Teleportation Tweak are instantaneous and the improvement to sound quality will be audible immediately. The Teleportation Tweak excels in 3-dimensionality, lushness, inner detail and air. Bonus: The picture quality of any video system in the house will also be improved - better color and contrast! Customer should pay via Paypal or check/MO (payable to Geoff Kait) prior to calling Machina Dynamica via landline or cell phone. Machina Dynamica's Teleportation Tweak $60.
Transation: They will call you, for the bargain price of $60, and not only make your entire audio system sound better, but it will improve the picture quality on your televisions!
ALL THROUGH A SINGLE 30-SECOND PHONE CALL
Science just jumped out the window, and took Logic and Reason with her. -
Re:Audiophile tastes aren't exactly a good metric.
I wasn't saying ANYTHING about China or the quality of their products, you asshat.
I was critiquing the ability of the audiophool crowd to distinguish worthwhile products from technobabble, marketing scams, and flat-out bullshit. And how an endorsement by said group says absolutely NOTHING about the technical merits of a product. Here are only a few examples of the utter BULLSHIT that the audiophools buy into:
A wooden volume control KNOB for $500 (need 2 for stereo, BTW) that promises buyers that "The sound becomes much more open and free flowing with a nice improvement in resolution. Dynamics are better and overall naturalness is improved.":
http://www.referenceaudiomods.com/Merchant2/mercha nt.mvc?Screen=PROD&Product_Code=NOB_C37_C
Special "secret mojo" paint to apply to the D/A chip inside your CD player to create the mystical "tube sound":
http://www.altmann.haan.de/tubeolator/
A $1500 POWER CABLE that is described like a glass of fine wine. "The Clairvoyant's signature is engaging, energetic, and bristling with light and microdynamic life"; "lifelike timing and pace" coupled with "clarity, definition, lithe touch, and articulation throughout the lower registers."

Re:It's sticky tape now, huh?
Feh, that's NOTHING. Some people believe that this device can enhance the sound of CD audio via quantum entanglement with the pits on the disc. No, it's not a fucking joke, some people really are this stupid.
-
Re:Cables
While I agree with you generally (the difference betewen crapy stock cables that come with the player and decent 10-40 dollar cables, like Belkan's stuff, is noticable to me at least) the important thing is the perceived difference by the listener. If you can hear a difference and want to spend the scratch, than it's worth it for you. A large number of devices meant to "enhance" or reproduce sound and picture quality have no scientific or rational basis for function. Yet, some people claim to be able to hear extrememly pronounced differences. Take for example this completely unscientific "intelligent chip" that can enhance a cd via. a completely mysterious mechanism: http://machinadynamica.com/machina64.htm. Its important to remember that the actual individual perception of sound is tied to more than just audio reproduction (talk to your friend who just blew 5k on a tube amp that sounds awful to you: its about the money he spent.)
