Re:Bring back Myth!
You can still play the Myth games and Marathon on Mariusnet.com.
Unfortunately, Bungie sold their Myth rights to Take2 which isn't doing anything with them so there won't be any more Myth games.
Bungie still has the rights to Marathon and is supposedly working on Marathon IV.

Myth: The Fallen Lords by Bungie
I am unsure whether this title is "unscary" enough for her, but it is less bloody than the LOTR movies.
It is simply one of the best and most unusual adventure quest titles ever made. It has a solo campaign and multiplayer mode. You can also play the solo levels co-operatively online or on a LAN. Make sure you have the latest patch.
Most multiplay nowdays is on Myth II though, but Myth TFL has a much better solo storyline.

Re:Consumer rights...
An excellent point. Valve doesn't have to provide us with a multiplayer network, and many devs drop support a few years after the game has been released.
Look at the Myth series, bungie.net was taken down a short while after Microsoft bought bungie. Sure, a couple third party networks have sprung up in the community (Marius Net and Play Myth) but the game is not longer officially supported and thus the communities no longer grow.
Valve could have left HL 1 for dead after 6 years of support, and I don't think gamers could argue they had no right to do so. Ultimately, the HLDS system costs valve money, no way to force them to keep paying it well after the game has passed its prime.. -
Silly Blizzard
Bungie didn't sue these people for making a clone of Bungie.net.

Previous Bungie games, still alive

I don't understand this cheating problem

and if you want to play Myth One online:
go to Http://www.mariusnet.com. This is the new server for Myth The Fallen Lords (Bungie's went down in 2001). If you've lost your CD serial number, don't worry, it isn't required anymore.

Run software in compatibility mode
WindowsXP has the ability to run software in Win95/Win98 compatibility mode - this should correct crashes and errors when running older games and pieces of software. Instructions are here.

Speaking of long-lived games
Myth: The Fallen Lords from the now defunct Bungie Software is still being played online five years after it came out. They took the server down, and another one was made by the fans. There are probably thousands of fan-made mods out there, with new ones still being made.
Old games don't die, they just get old. -
Alternate Myth/Myth II server...
An alternative to bungie.net for both Myth and Myth II has existed for a few months now via mariusnet. Marius did a great job reverse engineering the b.net protocol during the days of closed source while b.net began to falter. The site has quick and easy instructions on how to redirect your Myth app to the marius.net server.
