    I've been following this closely since word of the successful port got out a few days ago.

    NetBSD was able to get their code bootstrapped due to a programming backdoor left in by Sega which lets the console be started from the second session of a standard CDROM, as opposed to sega's proprietary GDROM format. This was the same method used by the Gameshark CDX disc. Unfortunately, due to recent innovations using this boot method, Sega is rumored to be phasing out the backdoor in the newest releases of the Dreamcast to keep third-party developers happy.

    Anyway, I hope Sega gets themselves in gear and releases the Dreamcast NIC sometime soon. Then all we need is a NetBSD-based distributed.net client disc.. ;>

    Now all we have to do is wait ten years for someone to remix Sega's excellent Jet Set Radio soundtrack. Although, there's at least one song in the game that I'm sure won't make it to the US.. (:

    Emerald Coast from Sonic Adventure wouldn't make a bad remix either.

    Sega might be able to hit it big pushing Dreamcast as a set top box. The DC already has two web browsers out for it (PlanetWeb and DreamKey, I'm posting this from the PlanetWeb browser) and is an extremely attractive offer for someone looking to do things on the net for cheap.

    The PlanetWeb browser also has internet-standard mail and IRC clients built in. I have a few screenshots of the PlanetWeb browser up (those are from version 1.0, they're up to 2.0 now.)

    As an aside, I'm posting this from my Dreamcast because my Windows 2000 box decided to lock me out with a BSOD-on-boot. Thanks Bill. Really.

    Anyway, one thing that's a must if you're using your Dreamcast on the Internet is the sega keyboard. It's a standard keyboard with the three M$ keys replaced with S1 through 3, but it has a cable capable of hooking to one of the Dreamcast's maple bus connectors.

    Check out the Nights into Dreams table in Sonic Adventure, it's fun for the entire family.. or something.

    My favorite game of pinball had to be the game, well, Pinball for the Atari 2600. I could spend hours playing it and roll-over the score several times.

    Unless you're really into having a physical table to bump a little silver ball around, computer pinball pretty much looks like the way of the future. You don't have to keep feeding it quarters, and you can beat the crap out of your game controller without it tilting.

    Note that the a good number of the DVD case defendant sites are outside the US. Still, the DVD lawyers saw fit to file suit against people running mirror sites all over the world. Unfortunately, they got their way with a number of the non-US sites.

    "install media player as root" then the program totally messes up the system, for "optimalisation" purposes.. next thing you know your system is as buggy as a smartupdated version of win98.

    I think the most fun old games are the ones that didn't try and 'push' the system to far. By that I mean, games that didn't try to produce 'amazing' graphics, because by default those graphic will appear to suck to future generations.

    As far as modern games go, Sonic Adventure on the Dreamcast does some amazing things with graphics and they're not even pushing the hardware. Most of the graphics are "slight of hand", and you don't really notice how they did it unless you look very closely. A good game keeps you busy enough watching the foreground to not even have to worry about looking at the background.

    Those are the kind of games I like to play, the ones where some real thought went into the question of "How do I present this image to the player with the least possible resource usage?"

    I'd say a game like Soul Calibur pushes the Dreamcast to about 50% of its potential, and it's phenominal. Probably the best-looking and best-playing fighter out there now. It's a system seller.

    Just makes me want to see what they'll come up with next.

    We're still in the game, the judge confirmed that linking is crucial to how the internet operates, and we're still allowed to link to mirrors of the files elsewhere.

    Page 6 Says that linking to web sites is still legal. I do find comfort in the fact that the judge realises that linking is essential to the WWW, and that a web master cannot be held responsible for the contents of a site to which it links.

    I do have to admit that the judge's reasoning is the most sound I've seen so far in favor of the DVD CCA, but only when considering the issues of trade secrets, not copy protection. The judge merely granted them the right to protect their licensed algorithms, but this is shaky ground which will be heavily debated in the future. I am confident that this whole thing will work itself out to some open DVD standard in time to come.

    Is it my imagination, or is the judge saying that if the mirrors would just all charge for the software, it would be much harder to get an injunction, since they would have an economic interest in its being available?

    Take a look at the list of defendants in the case (available here). A good number of the "Doe" defendants are not even within the United States and therefore not under the jurisdiction of any U.S. court or copyright law. So even if the judge finds that trade secrets were violated, what good will an injunction do?

    BTW, notice that Slashdot is listed as "Doe" defendant number 57...

    We would like to point out to all of the mirror sites with things like "fuck the lawyers" on them that it is because of a generous group of lawyers that we are still here. These lawyers are working for free (or much less than they could get by going over to the Dark Side) and don't deserve this kind of abuse.

    We have just been informed that the DVD Copy Control Association is seeking a restraining order against us (named as "Doe 28") for distributing DeCSS and linking to pages that distribute it and linking to pages that link to pages that distribute it.

    Section 48 of this request states that we supposedly "have received notice through the MPA and refused to remove the information at issue". This is absolutely false! We have never received any such request (from the MPA or anybody else for that matter) and we obviously were not given the opportunity to refuse! Either Jared Bobrow needs to go back to law school or the DVD CCA needs to get a new firm. This is the kind of sloppy work that could get an important document thrown out.

    Explanation on legality of this information

    The software (source as well as binaries) offered on this site can be freely redistributed because it was published under the GNU General Public License. The purpose of this software is not illegal copying of DVD disks. It is meant to provide information necessary to be able to program a DVD player for Linux. To do this, the CSS system needs to be incorporated in the player. Recently the (very weak) DVD content scrambling system was deciphered, freeing the way for a Linux DVD player. The CSS system is not a copy protection system, since it does not prevent copying of the disk. Writing information about the way an encryption scheme functions is completely legal. The source code and binaries on this site are completely legal too, since they contain no code from the DVD consortium or its members. The sources and programs on this site were written by third parties using clean-room reverse engineering methods which are (ready?) completly legal.

    Attention www.rhythm.cx was hosting a list of mirrors for these files. That list of mirrors has been replaced with a page reading "This site has been taken down for legal reasons." Here's what the maintainer put on the site the day it was shut down:

    NOTE (Thu, Nov 11, 12:17pm EST): I've recently been informed that a law firm which is likely to be one that would try get these mirrors taken down has been visiting this mirror site as well as others. With that said, there is a possibility that I may have to remove this site in the near future because like everyone else, I can't afford to go to court to fight it. Luckly, it seems fairly unlikely that any law firm will ever be able to get rid of all these mirrors at this point (there are currently 41 in 8 different countries and this list is growing every day). However, I have only seen very few mirror _lists_ like this one anyplace. If anyone has the resources, it might be wise to mirror this list of mirrors as well so that the right people will still know that these mirrors exist.

These lawyers are working for free (or much less than they could get by going over to the Dark Side) and don't deserve this kind of abuse.

    We have just been informed that the DVD Copy Control Association is seeking a restraining order against us (named as "Doe 28") for distributing DeCSS and linking to pages that distribute it and linking to pages that link to pages that distribute it.

    Section 48 of this request states that we supposedly "have received notice through the MPA and refused to remove the information at issue". This is absolutely false! We have never received any such request (from the MPA or anybody else for that matter) and we obviously were not given the opportunity to refuse! Either Jared Bobrow needs to go back to law school or the DVD CCA needs to get a new firm. This is the kind of sloppy work that could get an important document thrown out.

    Explanation on legality of this information

    The software (source as well as binaries) offered on this site can be freely redistributed because it was published under the GNU General Public License. The purpose of this software is not illegal copying of DVD disks. It is meant to provide information necessary to be able to program a DVD player for Linux. To do this, the CSS system needs to be incorporated in the player. Recently the (very weak) DVD content scrambling system was deciphered, freeing the way for a Linux DVD player. The CSS system is not a copy protection system, since it does not prevent copying of the disk. Writing information about the way an encryption scheme functions is completely legal. The source code and binaries on this site are completely legal too, since they contain no code from the DVD consortium or its members. The sources and programs on this site were written by third parties using clean-room reverse engineering methods which are (ready?) completly legal.

    Attention www.rhythm.cx was hosting a list of mirrors for these files. That list of mirrors has been replaced with a page reading "This site has been taken down for legal reasons." Here's what the maintainer put on the site the day it was shut down:

    NOTE (Thu, Nov 11, 12:17pm EST): I've recently been informed that a law firm which is likely to be one that would try get these mirrors taken down has been visiting this mirror site as well as others. With that said, there is a possibility that I may have to remove this site in the near future because like everyone else, I can't afford to go to court to fight it. Luckly, it seems fairly unlikely that any law firm will ever be able to get rid of all these mirrors at this point (there are currently 41 in 8 different countries and this list is growing every day). However, I have only seen very few mirror _lists_ like this one anyplace. If anyone has the resources, it might be wise to mirror this list of mirrors as well so that the right people will still know that these mirrors exist.
